How would you like to travel across Middle-earth? Can't Post

Personally, I would prefer a horse (of course) or my own two feet. I can trust those. Not so sure I can trust a warg or a fell beast not to decide I'm better off as a snack than as a passenger.

However, that being said... I would totally take the bunny sled on a joyride if given the opportunity... *looks around furtively* ...Shh! Don't tell Radagast I said that!

Two ways to get there: left, right, left, right... [In reply to] Can't Post

Old soldiers joke. But, yeah, walking gives you plenty of time to see the sights and stop and smell the elanors.

OTOH, I miss flying, and the view from an eagle would be awe inspiring.

Of course, there is nothing quite so fun as messing about in boats.

I guess I need to cross Middle Earth at least three times.

Yes, the view from an eagle would be most impressive, and I'm not afraid of heights. I just think it would be awfully cold and windy up there. That, and I fear with my luck I'd get the Cockney eagle that would tump me out on the ground and start a spiel about not being Middle-earth United Airlines. (Someone else other than me has seen Veggietales' parody, Lord of the Beans, right? Right? Guys?)

Aw, why not. I'll just have to go everywhere in Middle-earth and use all forms of transportation! Maybe there shall be a competition to see how many times we cross Middle-earth? Laugh

We'll see how I fare in boats. I don't have much experience with boats... Crazy

List of places to avoid in Middle-earth:

(1) Mirkwood. Too many spiders. Or, as a compromise, we avoid the *depths* of the forest and stick to the Elven part of it.

(2) Barrow-downs, definitely. *shivers*

(3) The Paths of the Dead. I'll leave that to Aragorn and the Grey Company, thank you very much.

(4) Mount Doom. I have no desire to be hit by a lava bomb falling from the sky.

We should probably add Angband, Utumno, Barad-dur, Minas Morgul, and Dol Guldur to the list. (Whew! Never realized exactly how many evil fortresses there are in Middle-earth). Because I'm fairly sure Morgoth and Sauron have had millennia to perfect the art of dealing with unexpected guests. I pity the door-to-door salesmen that try selling them things...

Eagles [In reply to] Can't Post

If Great Eagles are an option then that's the best option for sure. You can cover vast distances, get an incredible view, and bypass difficult or dangerous landscapes like the Misty Mountains or Mirkwood. It would take some convincing to get the Eagles to agree to cart you around though.

I'd probably choose a horse as my main mode of transport, but I would love a flight on one of the eagles! And like you, if Radagast gave me the chance I would definitely borrow his bunny sled for a quick circuit of the forest. I'd be a bit worried about hitting my head on branches though. I'm not as flexible as him and probably wouldn't duck in time...

Do barrels count as a mode of transport? They would make for a very thrilling ride, but only if they were open-topped!

Now walking does have its merits and it would take the longest. Winkmeaning more time in ME Wink It also includes lots of discomfort, ( lugging around cooking equipment, extra clothes, ect.)

So a horse. I'd love to have a friendship with a horse and travel together at whatever pace I'd like, walking or speeding long. A Horsie, please :D

Joking aside, I would love to hike all over Middle Earth. I often read The Hobbit in summer, and would get to the Fellowship of the Ring just as the weather was getting cooler and it was September and Frodo was taking hikes around the country to get fit for travel. I would long to be travelling alongside him! And as I drove to work, and the fog from the river settled in on the hills and around my car, I would picture Fog on the Barrow downs, and smile.
But I love the horses of middle earth too, and wouldn't mind a ride on Brego or Shadowfax, if he would allow me to ride on him that is!

I mean, come on! Dragons are so cool - for those who have seen Eragorn and How To Train Your Dragon will know what I mean - they can do all kinds of tricks, diving from cliff tops and tight manoeuvres through trees and buildings... *sighs*
That would be much cooler than flying on an Eagle! What power!
"Thank you for flying Dragon Air! Please come again soon."

How about river transport? There's thousands of rivers there!
Barrel riding! Now there's an idea...
Actually, I'd probably not stand being in a barrel to travel around Middle-Earth.
A boat from Lady Galadriel through the Argonath and yonder would do nicely...

I should have really sat down and thought of *all* the possible ways one can travel and applied them to Middle-earth. Silly me, I was only thinking of Middle-earth ways to travel that most people would attempt... I'd be too afraid of being eaten or burned to a crisp to ride Smaug, so I didn't add 'dragon' to the list. But if we could find a tame one, I'm sure we could organize rides, charge admittance... get a nice little tourism industry going in Middle-earth... Wink

I'm just teasing, it's the van for me! [In reply to] Can't Post

As I say, I like my creature comforts.Wink. I'd get too cold flying over the mountains on a flying carpet. And I may want to be on the iPad and there's no Wi-Fi on the flying carpet.

I [In reply to] Can't Post

think I would like to travel by horse. Although I don't have much experience riding a horse, maybe I could get a ride with Legolas in the van. Wink Or I could get help from some trusty ramgers. Smile

"Commandeer" Eärendil's ship.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...pick up a crew in Umbar, and then raid, pillage, and pilfer my weasely black guts out!!

Arrr!

Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope.

Arrrr! I be renaming her Mor-Estel!!

Now I've got "Magical Mystery Bus" playing in my head [In reply to] Can't Post

Aragorn & Gandalf introduce Eomer to pipeweed . . .

These staves he spoke, and yet he laughed as he said them. For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people. And he was also high as a kite.

Well, according to Wikipedia [In reply to] Can't Post

... it has actually been suggested that the Norse berserkers did get high (on those red spotty Fly Agaric mushrooms) before going into battle! However it did also say that there was no concrete evidence to back up the theory.
