We all know those iconic moments of the LOTR movies where Gandalf yells "You shall not pass!" and "Fly you fools!", or the One Ring perfectly slipping onto Frodo's finger in the Prancing Pony. And let's not forget, Gollum's "My precious" line which has become a pretty iconic thing aswell. Do you think The Hobbit will have any iconic moments aswell? Or do you think AUJ already had moments like these? I think Bilbo's conversation with Smaug will be the scene that has the biggest chance to create some iconic moments. Maybe Beorn will have some too, depending on how he's played.

Then they took off their clothes and bathed in the river, which was shallow and clear and stony at the ford. When they had dried in the sun, which was now strong and warm, they were refreshed, if still sore and a little hungry. That's one scene where people will be screaming "My eyes! My eyes!" But I think the most iconic will be Smaug rising from under the treasure hoard. With Thorin's death scene a close second.

- I think the entire Bag End sequence with the dwarves will be an enduring highlight for most fans. - I often hear Ian McKellen's voice speaking these lines as Gandalf, and taken all together they have personal meaning for me in my life: "I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure." "The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there." "Home is now behind you. The world is ahead." "You'll have a tale or two to tell of your own when you come back." - The change in Bilbo when "You've got the wrong hobbit" becomes "I'm going on an adventure!" - These lines always crack me up for some reason: " I didn't say anything." "Wasn't talking to you!" - I've started using these lines: "What does/do he/you say? Does/Do he/you offer us/me insult?! - I imagine this one will be stated defiantly at many a dinner table for at least one or two generations: "I don't like green food!"

Iconic isn't just recognizable. It's defining. It's supposed to be instantly known by people who haven't even seen the movie. For example, everyone know who Darth Vader is, even people who never saw Star Wars. Same goes for particular Star Wars scenes that one knows what they are even if he/she didn't sit through the whole thing. AUJ didn't get there. You forgot the most iconic scene and line in LOTR saga: "One does not simply walk into Mordor". This has become the most quotable line of all 3 movies, by a landslide. variations of it, even people who didn't see LOTR quote it and know where it's from. Funny thing is, they didn't seem to design it as a future quotable while complete failure lines such as never quoted "If you want him, come and claim him" and "I am no man" reeked of Next Ripley ambition that fell flat on its face.
"RadagaStoner deserves no mercy!" Tauriel the Radagast Slayer, the Chief of Inglorious Elfguards Tauriel saved us from Itaril. Never forget.

Gandalf transforming the smoke ring and arriving at Bag End. THE MISTY MOUNTAIN CHORUS BY THE DWARVES! GANDALF'S FORCEFUL ENTRANCE INTO GOBLIN TOWN (sure, things got ridiculous later in the scene, but that initial blast and the call to arms, right through The Great Goblin yelling, "he wields the foe hammer!". . . POWERFULLY iconic moment. Great!) The arrival of Smaug at Erebor (hell, that whole Prologue, Erebor, Thranduil's emassy visit, Thror succumbing to his Ring, The Dragon's arrival etc. etc. etc.) Galadriel and Gandalf holding hands on a Rivendell balcony. Balin recounting the glory of Thorin (even if the details were FUBAR wrong!) "You were born to the quiet hills and little rivers of The Shire. But home is now behind you. The world is ahead" The initial introduction of Radagast. Bilbo and Gollum at a couple points. I expect several from the next films. Smaug one of the chief amongst them.
"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

But, those examples all became "famous" years after FotR was released. Once The Hobbit has aged a little we'll see which quotes, if any, will stand the test of time. Don't be disheartened if there's none. TTT doesn't have any either! But RotK has "I can carry you" and "For Frodo!!" As well as Aragorn's speech and Theoden's "DEATH!".

I wouldn't say "One does not simply walk into Mordor" is more iconic than say, Gollum saying "My precious". This Mordor joke (or meme, as everyone likes to call it these days) is pretty much limited to the internet and therefore only the people who regularly browse the internet will know about it. Whereas "My precious" repeatedly gets used outside of the internet aswell. It's almost as well-known as "Luke, i am your father" (yes i know he doesn't say it like that in the movie) Also, i don't know if you were trying to correct me in your first paragraph, but that is exactly what i meant with iconic too. Scenes that are instantly recognisable as being "from that movie" even for those who haven't seen it yet.
