That is very lovely Brethil [In reply to] Can't Post

I do not recall anything (since i have been here) exploring this avenue centering around the white tree.

There is an excitement that lies here. I feel a fulfillment with the release of joy. And there is the feeling of deep peace as well. :)

" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange."

Chapter VII: In the House of Tom Bombadil; FOTR's

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

I love this poem. You're really good at this! I only had to make one change near the end for it to easily fit this old tune. I did tweak the tune melody some too so it worked with the words, but it was easy because your verses are so rhythmic.SmileSmileSmile

Really enjoyed this- the white tree concept is one of my favourites, linking the whole legendarium

Ethel, you've inspired me [In reply to] Can't Post

to filk some favorite shanties for Middle Earth. The Mingulay Boat song was easy; just substitute "Valinor" and "friends" for "Mingulay" and "wives." That one works beautifully! If you don't know the tune: http://www.youtube.com/...t=PLFB3AC36B32ADD3FD

I think I can rewrite Rollin' Down To Old Maui as Sailing Home to Numenor, and I have some ideas for turning The Diamond into a song about Earendil. Thanks for getting my creative juices flowing!

I love a good trombone. They would put on [In reply to] Can't Post

a fabulous performance of a trombone choir from time to time at the college I went to. But they also had an Early Instrument group there, and between sacbuts, crumhorns and therobos, my ears will never be the same!Wink I have the feeling, though, that since Early Music performance was in its infancy then, both the instruments and the players thereof will have improved vastly! And the lute and cittern and other stringed instrument performances were always top-notch.Smile

I know we have enough poems now for Tolkienia's monument [In reply to] Can't Post

This one is just for giggles Smile. And I actually gave it a title!

When Premonition Comes A-Calling

1
Here's a thing no respectable hobbit should endure
A plague of beards hungering at their home-sweet-home door
Oh so blithe they barged in
Laying siege with mayhem
Sudden calamity served for my dinner hour.

2
Withered plum trifle and Bree cheese, gone in a blink
Nineteen kidney pasties they washed down with malt drinks
Olives dunked in a treacle keg
Every spare crock of fish eggs
Dratted dwarves! They'd be game for trollish gobble-lings.

3
Just bitter dregs with nary a crust left for me
A victim am I of my own hospitality
The clover wine's now in peril
No help is an empty barrel
Imagine if they discovered my second pantry!!

4
Earthenware jugs sit in a row, drained and capsized
Here bitten spoons, there roughly handled iron knives
Vexing presumptuous gnomes!
Why don't they all just go home?
Then boots began to stamp and bold voices to rise....

5
Like a half-sized sword, I grabbed my best bread-butterer
As prized plates launched hand to hand like skeet through the parlor
Saucers and tea cups flew forth and back
In wondrous symmetry each one stacked,
At my "service," indeed, juggling both dishes and words.

6
Betwixt disbelief and relief, my calmness restored
As the whole roistering band quelled their brass-throated roar
Surely the worst is now behind me
Just invite my guests to de-party
Wait -- is that thunder I hear pounding my treasured door?
