What movies (et. al.) did you watch last weekend?
|

which really means what visual, moving media have you watched recently or since the last time you posted? We just watched "Your Highness" with Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Toby Jones, Zooey Deschanel, Charles Dance, and Damian Lewis. I'm not sure what demographic it was aimed at but it wasn't one I belong to. It's described on wikipedia as a 'stoner' movie. I do think it's possible for movies to be crass but with some wit. This one was mostly witless and it almost didn't know what it wanted to be: crass and stupid; bloody; gross; epic; heroic; parody ... ??? There's likely someone (or more than one) who likes or will like this movie. But I can't recommend it.

I needed a non-taxing movie and Over The Hedge was perfect. "Vern! Ate! Steve!" (said an opposum voiced by William Shatner). Another older film was S.W.A.T. from 2003, with a very young Colin Farrell as well as LL Cool J, Samuel L Jackson and Michelle Rodriguez - and a pre-fame Jeremy Renner! One of the delights of watching older films is seeing actors who have developed a high profile in movies before they were A Name. (Also, this was a $5 DVD that the cashier charged me only 68c for. It's the small wins in life.)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. I've had this on dvd for ages, but felt a bit too disaster fatigued to watch it. I finally got around to it in the weekend and I've watched about 4 episodes so far. I am definitely engrossed and addicted already. There is a lot in it that looks and feels strangely familiar. And I am loving the music, which I didn't really expect. It sounds like I've got a few seasons to work my way through! I've also been working my way through Judge John Deed, and now I have George Gently in the queue. Still going through my Martin Shaw phase.

After a non-descript role in The Hobbit, he was saddled with another in a disposable Mortal Instruments. I never thought he had what it takes to become a big star, but someone obivously thought differently when he put him in these big movies (well, Mortal Instruments was supposed to be big until it bombed last weekend) and Turner believed him when he dumped Being Human for minisule face time on the big screen. Anyway, the movie isn't even a good rental. It feels like a really bad fanfic aping Star Wars and Harry Potter in equal measure, and you need to read the book to know what's going on. Pass.

The Big Wedding: One of those movies with an all-star cast. It also had no plot to speak of and inconsistent characters. Ben Barnes is really pretty and so is the house that they're all staying in - that's mostly what I remember about it. Warm Bodies: Romeo & Juliet with zombies; funny and engaging with a nice moral to it. Violence & gore kept to a minimum (for a zombie movie). The Intouchables: Wonderful. Based on a true story. A wealthy quadriplegic man hires a backstreets guy to be his personal caregiver; turns out they both need what the other has to give. Omar Sy, who plays the caregiver, is awesome. I scratched my head at "Your Highness," mostly because I wondered WHY all those big-name stars even agreed to be in such a piece of dren. Blackmail?

told me all I needed to know right there. I always thought the "Twilight" books were just one long piece of fanfic - all emotion and dialogue, almost no plot or characterization or description. Cassie Clare also wrote the "Very Secret Diaries" which had a big vogue on TORn for a while. They were funny at first but the joke wore thin really fast.

"Searching for Sugarman" again
[In reply to]

I first saw this Best Documentary Oscar winner last year, which was followed up by a Q&A. Searching for Sugarman is the story of an obscure Detroit muisician from the 1970s, who recorded a few albums, then disappeared. Somehow, his albums made it to South Africa during the height of apartheid, where they instantly became an underground hit among the young people rebelling against the oppressive government. Rodriguez's anti-establishment lyrics hit home with South Africans who thought apartheid was terrible, and he soon was considered a rock and roll icon, similar to The Beatles and Elvis. At this time, South Africa was closed to the outside world, so they had no way of knowing that Rodriguez was completely unknown in other countries. Legends grew about Rodriguez, capped by the gruesome story that he had shot himself on stage at the end of a concert. A South African record store owner, Stephen Segerman, began to wonder about Rodriguez - where he was from, and what really happened to him. All he had was the lyrics to Rodriguez's songs, so he combed through them for clues. He posted a query in the liner notes for a re-issue of one of the albums, and Craig Strydom, a musician, took him up on the question. The movie is about the search for Rodriguez, who is called "Sugarman" from one of his songs. This is a wonderful movie, and I enjoyed it the second time just as much as the first. For anyone in the US who has Comcast On Demand, and Starz, it's available until November. Otherwise, I'm sure it's on Netflix. Highly recommended.

Okay, well only the first 10 minutes because it's our first Blu-Ray (we are so behind the times LOL), and I was curious about the picture quality. My 12-year daughter has watched the movie probably 4 times now since the night before last and downloaded it to her iPod. Gee, I wonder if she likes it? I seldom have time for either movies or TV until late evening. Normally I spend the last hour of my day either reading or writing or touring Torn. That can be risky, however ... last night I was working on a poem, fell asleep and woke up to discover I'd somehow managed to erase all 6 verses! I just hate it when that happens

The World's End: pretty funny, and a little odd, so just like their other movies. Will need to watch it again to catch all the fast quips and inside jokes. And was it just me, or did Gary King's sword in the last scene look just like Glamdring? Or have I just watched AUJ too many times? Warm Bodies: cute, sweet zombie movie, really liked the humor ("don't be creepy").

I'm not at all a cycling fan, though I do like toodling around on a bike sometimes. But we watched this because they were on our home turf. It was especially fun to see all the aerial views. As they were going up the Big Thompson canyon, which we do pretty much weekly, Uncle Baggins kept saying things like "I recognize that rock!" He also went downtown to watch them whiz past, and shot some footage. The silly commentator thought it was the Cache La Poudre River, which is a different river entirely. But then the silly commentator also said there are 5800 feet in a mile. Here's a map of where they went. I've also been watching a youtube series on beginning Hebrew I'm about halfway through the intermediate series, which is still at a very beginner level. The guy has a geeky style, which I actually like. He goes very slowly and methodically and is a good teacher if you don't mind his style. He's also a fundie Christian, which I'm not, but that doesn't enter into the classes too often. Does anybody know if there's a class like that online somewhere for learning Sindarin or Quenya?

Man, what an entourage of lead and support vehicles! I love watching these tour riders do their thing riding tight in packs though towns and hairy downhills in the mountains. I never got to do that doing just the time trial type rides in tri's. Thanks terl, for the video and the funny comments
" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange." Chapter VII: In the House of Tom Bombadil; FOTR's Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted." — J.R.R. About a disparate group of magicians who get drawn into a grand scheme. We saw the trailer for this a few weeks ago, and were intrigued enough to want to see the movie. I enjoyed it a lot! Quite a clever plot, some likable performances, nice visuals with some very smart effects, and just generally a fun watch.

aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

the aliens were mostly done by the Henson folks. They didn't just have different noses or ears like most of the Star Trek aliens, they were reallly alien. What was amazing was how much character the Henson folks and the voice actors created. After a while you stopped noticing that they weren't live-action actors.

I often forgot the overthrown emperor, Rygel, was a muppet at all. He was given lots of personality by whoever did his voice along with realistic facial expressions. Ditto Pilot. What I liked about the Farscape aliens is that they were humanoid but looked very alien; there was a unique look to every one of them, including their habitats. I contrast that with other sci fi series, where the aliens usually just have a slightly different forehead.

I'm a casual fan and haven't seen many of them. But holy cow, are they cheesy! And the Starship Enterprise seems like one swingin' singles cruise. Mr. Eruvande and I have been competing with each other to predict which scantily clad alien babe will get her hooks into Captain Kirk. Mr. Eruvande likes the brunette android babe with the criss-cross front suspender things (And no shirt. ), from the episode, "What Are Little Girls Made Of?". I like Captain Pike. We both thought Charlie X was creepy. One thing we both learned from one of the extra features, is that James Doohan ("Scotty") was doing a Scottish accent the whole time. We thought he really talked that way! Both The Little Eruvandes are enjoying the series.
