All Hail Tolkienia! A proposed anthem collaboration-- Can't Post

inspired by Rembrethil here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=632774#632774

And I'd love for this to be collaborative, since apparently we will mostly all be moving here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...632709#632709http://
or to Rosie's neighborhood in Holland at some point in the future. Wink

The music I set this to in my head--and based on the lyrics--is from a song by Flander and Swann called "The Armadillo." (Donald Swann wrote a song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On" approved by Tolkien: http://oxfordinklings.blogspot.com/...-flanders-swann.html)

Here's the original music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5IUkIu1Zx4

And here's the original words: http://www.nyanko.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/...tiary_armadillo.html

(I switched the order in the "Tolkenia" version below, and since the verses have 2 different tunes, and the chorus is different too, I thought I'd give the rundown, like this.
Original: Verse tune I, Chorus tune, Verse tune I, Verse tune II, Chorus tune, Verse tune III, Verse tune II, Chorus tune [with additions].
Tolkienia: So far I have Chorus tune, Verse I tune, Chorus, Verse II tune, Chorus, and I think any combination would work for the rest.)

Take your pick, and jump in and finish our new National Anthem! Now somebody's got to invent the flag . . .

Hail, Tolkienia!

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune I)

Here in So-uth Woodham Ferrers we are safe from changeling bears,
As we amble past the trees of Arwen's Grove.
We pick up a lunch at Curlew's, sail off from Eyotts club,
To navigate the falls of Dimrill Stairs.

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune II)

Drawn by it's mellow byways,
We meander on our bikes,
To discover nooks and crannies
Or adventure that We likes (Precious).

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse?

Verse?

Chorus?

This project has some heart and soul. [In reply to] Can't Post

The Flanders and Swann piece is really nice. I like it a lot.
And your lyrics are smartly done. It is a good start
This is a good idea Ethel and it is a project we all could find fun doing.
I wonder, (asking everyone reading) what would be the makings of a Middle-earth flag? Ideas? A start may be to include Elendil's star or the seven stars. Perhaps a component could be the two trees. A Gondorian and a Dwarvish symbol could be considered. What could a Periannath-ive symbol be?

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

A flag competition? ;-) [In reply to] Can't Post

I love this thread Ethel. This should be sung every morning, as one logs on to the forum.

Here's my entry for Tolkenia's flag.

Too cool, 'nough said.

On the flag topic, what do we want to represent. Their is too much imagery in Tolkien to all fit. What are the key concepts that we want to convey?

Or perhaps you could design the weather station. (Are balloons, barometers, and Doppler radar allowed in our branch of Middle Earth? Shocked)

is a good'un Daniel!Smile. Cannot believe you did that so fast.
What we need now is for Rux or Darkstone to show up with a verse....

Oh my! [In reply to] Can't Post

This is really cool! I see how you worked the Seven Stars into the design! Is that Smaug relaxing on the left-hand letter box? Could you make him and the Professor's initials a bit more contrasting (for those of us with older eyes Wink)?

And then work it, so that as it flaps in the breeze, the "Speak Friend and Enter" appears in the Moria Tengwar script viewed one way, and Roman letters another...Angelic (Nothing like asking for the impossible! Laugh)

I haven't come up with more to add to the verses, at the moment it's been a long day for me and I'm rather "tanked"...Tongue

Lovely idea E-D!!!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

How is this for a stanza (and an evening routine!) Not sure if I quite have the rhythm right though.

The end of day is a special time, in our little Tolkien town
In Fellowship and greetings, a hum of happy sound.
At dusk we stand together, beneath the darkening sky,
And all eyes gaze to heaven as Earandil glimmers by.

Beautiful! [In reply to] Can't Post

I like it very much. Great rhyming! And I like the suggestion as an end-of-day event. In fact, I pretty much do that every clear night, out the back door (away from the darn street lights!Crazy)

It's fine just as it is, or if you want to fit it to one of the verse melodies, I think the Verse I version is very close to what you have (the very first thing sung on the recording). But it's lovely as it is.
Thank you!Smile

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

"As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

Beautiful words and wonderful phrases! I have a proposol, if you and Brethil wouldn't mind-- [In reply to] Can't Post

or feel like throwing tomatoes, cabbage, and soft, squishy crabapples at me!

Anyway, what you do on the spur of the moment is nothing short of brilliant! I'm jealous--it takes me a very long time for something rather staid and ordinaryBlush.

Proposal 1) I think there maybe should be a monument in our Tolkenia town square with poetry contributed by the residents engraved on it's sides, and maybe a town square poetry bulletin board (on Main?) for contributions, poems and thoughts. Maybe a bench by the White Tree for people to sit and read and think.Smile

Proposal 2) How would you two feel about just leaving out a word here and there so it fits the melody? The poems and rhythms and all are perfectly constructed, just some lines are too long for the actual melody, and we'd run out of notes to sing-- It really wouldn't matter at all, except I thought it might be fun to be able to sing all the verses sometime--maybe with Greendragon as choral director!

I'm going to stick in the Verse I melody here, because it's very difficult to tell just by looking at a sample verse (the words) what fits the length of the melody. It's too hard to tell about accents and syllables and all.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Armadillo/dp/B006CIJMXK

and to give an example of how you might be able to fit your lines right into the melody, just as an example. I hate to touch these, they're so beautiful. But just as an attempt to see how they might fit, I tried singing along to the melody, and this seemed to work--

We pledge our troth to John R. R.
Whose legends are lightning in a jar
They inspire, like bright words surging through a wire
Our admiration, our loyalty, our desire to populate
The Middle Earth meadow, which we celebrate.

or for Brethil's

The end of day is a special time, in our little Tolkien town
In our Fellowship, a hum of happy sound.
At dusk we stand together, beneath the darkening sky,
All eyes on heaven as Earandil glimmers by.

It really wouldn't take too much adjusting for either poem, however you night feel is appropriate and fits what you guys want to say. But really, it's not a big a deal. I just enjoy the thought of singing it all through, like at a Dragon Con, or just driving around town (not in the shower for me! Too many listeners in the houseBlush).

Hope you guys don't mind! Feel free to just ignore me!SmileSmileSmile

That would be a wonderful and fitting monument, to the memory of JRRT - to have a place to embrace and celebrate poetry, song and the magic of words. Perfect!

And for my part, I love what you did with the rhythm - I had lassoed Ruxendil into helping with songs before because I have a *bit* of a tin ear (can't carry a tune in a slop bucket, ya know) so I am quite thrilled with how you fit it into the song. Lovely!

Coming together quite well isn't it???!!! CoolSmileCool What a fun idea!

We just have to get some of those brilliant flags made now... ((((*Daniel!!!*))))

Catch, Ethel D.! [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's a beautiful apple I'm tossing to you for your delish ideas!

First of all, speaking for myself, I have no problem with your suggested tweaks to my verse. You know the melody far better than I. What I would like to propose is letting me take another pass it, then turning it over to you to modify as needed so it conforms to the song. It would be our little collaboration if you would be agreeable.

I've only recently discovered the joy of writing poetry so of course I loooove the idea of a bench under the white tree and posting poems for the denizens of our Tolkien utopia! Brethil, I'm sure, will also be keen on this.

You have wonderful ideas, E.D. Thanks for coordinating this and thank you for your generous words regarding my scribblings. Smile

Well Ethel, my parody prowess is pretty peaked, [In reply to] Can't Post

but i did start a tribute to Tolkien with this*:

There is one by name of Tolkien
With his heart, the world he adorned.
A spirit, the likes, never has been.
Profound meaning alone, summoned by call of horn.
In Middle-earth all brought together as one kin
Under a humble ranger known as Aragorn.

I have no idea if you can use this. Modify it if you desire or can.Laugh. You'd be the one to try.

This thread turned out fun.
