Which Tolkien book character would you have lunch with, and why?
|
Can't Post
|
|
I'm imagining you get lunch with the character as portrayed in the books - not any actors who portrayed them. So, no date with Richard Armitage or Liv Tyler, I'm afraid. I think I'd take lunch with Melian, to ask her about her side of the story. She is, as has been said in the Silmariion read through, so sketchily portrayed that its hard to see her as a character rather than a plot device.
Disclaimers: The words of noWizardme may stand on their heads! I'm often wrong about things, and its fun to be taught more.... "nowimė I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' " Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"

"So, where have you've been keeping yourself lately?"
****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.

T-Bomb and Goldberry would be musts, they tell great stories, and seem to have a nice taste in food (perhaps I could get him tipsy and finally get him to reveal his indentity)-the whole scene in his house always reads like a very odd dinner party to me anyway. Bilbo Baggins is another must- he's about as Hobbity as you can get, and as the SB's noted he has quite a reputation for odd stories, and nice food. Dain Ironfoot, Morwen, Hurin and Galadriel would all be cool to talk to (It would be interesting to see the greatest warrior of the Dwarves, and the greatest of the Men compare notes on battle strategy) and provide a interesting mix of opinions and stories, I'd second Melian as well for the same reasons-she is such an interesting enigma. I'd also like to ask all of them why no one apart from Hobbits and Men has surnames... Tar Aldarion, Cirdan the Shipwright (had to get him in there) and Imin would also be interesting to talk to-enigima's with very interesting stories to tell, And of course the Talking Purse and some of the Solosimpi would get invites for musical entertainment puposes...
The Talking Purse is Awesome, deal with it. But he isn't quite as aweome as Cirdan.

Favorite character - always has been, always will be. I don't think I'd have the cheek to try to "get to know him" or find out who he "really is". I think I'd be very happy to listen to a few stories, told over a table with a couple of beers. A lunch like that comes highly recommended by his friends:
Aragorn, the greatest traveller and huntsman of this age of the world. Was there ever any one like him? For all those who come to know him come to love him after his own fashion. Not but what he can tell a rare tale when he has the mind.
But he, of course, is his own best recommendation:
He wrapped his grey cloak about him, hiding his mail-shirt, and stretched out his long legs. Then he lay back and sent from his lips a thin stream of smoke. I am Strider and Dśnadan too, and I belong both to Gondor and the North.

Gandalf is like the grandparent who always has something unusual and interesting to say-only of course being Gandalf he would be much, much wiser and far more knowledgeable than any mere mortal. His stories would also be greatly varied, from tales of dangerous adventures to detailed descriptions of evenings spent relaxing in The Shire. Radagast is also a fascinating Wizard, and I'm sure that the tales of his meanderings in the wild would be greatly insightful-no doubt one could learn much about how to commune with nature through his teachings. Failing those two Tom Bombadil would be a good laugh, and Bilbo would be a most excellent dinner guest. Treebeard would tell great stories, although one might fall asleep long before the ending!

As my essay points out in rather tedious over the top detail Cirdan witnessed more than a little... And may I point out that technically The Purse has more dialogue (in the story at least) than Cirdan does and is amongst the longer serving characters in the Legendarium-he appears in all drafts of the The Hobbit (even the '60 rewrite) and even predates Gandalf and Thorin's name and entry in the story as the characters in the published book-yet more proof of his awesomeness.
The Talking Purse is Awesome, deal with it. But he isn't quite as aweome as Cirdan.

Any of the major hobbits would make excellent breakfast companions at Bag End. A nice, long meal following by some chatting in the garden, with them blowing smoke rings. Dinners followed by drinks late into the night with Cirdan and Elrond to hear some of their stories. Bombadil is a bit hyper and would make me nervous during a meal. Galadrlel would be a lovely dinner companion, but intimidating. I feel like I'd have to follow her lead and couldn't ask the questions I wanted to. Theoden would make a great dinner-mate, being so congenial and a good listener. As much as I like Treebeard, he's more talker than listener, so the conversation would seem one-sided. As one of the more introspective Noldor, a private lunch or dinner with Finarfin would hopefully draw him out and reveal a lot of the nature of Elves, both from seeing his character and hearing his reflections on his extended family. Orome seems rather intense, but I'd like to hear his hunting stories, maybe over some ice cream in a park in the summer, which should slow him down a bit. Sharing a meal with Ulmo--where else? a picnic at the beach--would be the best meal to have with a Vala to hear his insights on the world, and also where the best crabmeat comes from. If Morgoth were safely behind bars, I'd bring him his prison rations and talk with him to hear his views on the world, like interviewing Hitler. A disgusting person, of course, but there's always the curiosity about why they're so twisted and how they justify it. Great question as always, Wiz!

Also, I would have like to see his reaction when I explain that his character is based upon a nineteenth century industrialist!

But as they cut out the Scouring of the Shire, the one appearance by Ted was, I think, someone flirting with Rose the barmaid of the Green Dragon Sam looking jealous and Frodo saying to Sam something like, 'Don't worry, Rose can see an idiot when she sees him,' I think he also says to Sam, 'Keep out of trouble and it won't come to you.' This is at the start of the Fellowship. I don't agree with many of the movie changes, but this is one which made me chuckle and thought acceptable!

All whilst trying to ignore the rather handsome male Elves in attendance of course However, one would have to be sure to have been formally invited and not to cause offence- even an Elven dungeon would be a bit dire PS NoWiz you are are a rotter not allowing actors- but probably very wise!

honestly, i'd really want to reread lotr and reread the hobbit before the calendar was marked.... but, notwithstanding that, here would be some great luncheon companions... faramir maedhros beleg finrod elros nerdanel gandalf those rascally hobbits ulmo would be really great. great conversation, and he'd be willing to give me good advice, yet not get too involved. and i'm sure the scallops would be tender and the swimming delightful. it would be lunch by the sea. cheers -- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

norottermė. brethil, you could always lunch with thorin, and keep your eyes closed. but... to be +fair+.... it's rather subjective. who says some of these book characters don't +just happen+ to look like their actor counterparts? cheers -- .

among fangirls and fanboys. Or else RA and LT would end up attending so many lunches that they became very obese and unattractive anyway! I like yours and Mac's choices of lunch guests too. I said Thranduil to be different and it would be a different take on things!

.... "LT"? re my luncheon choices.... maybe it would be more fair for me to elaborate... faramir -- he's the guy who just said, "pfffff!" to the ring. not tempted at all ('tho i think this was an unintended problem created by the author). he's also so descent and honorable, very temperate, and is a wizard's pupil. he's quite well-rounded. a very interesting chap. maedhros -- hardly needs detailing. he could speak about valinor, his parents, how the silmaril worked on him. what happened with dior's sons. what it was like raising elrond and elros. such a complex personality, and very far-sighted. beleg -- he is just the greatest elf ever. him and finrod. a shining example of what is best in elvenkind. loyal, temperate, kind, intelligent, nurturing. and we could do the lunch outdoors, and get in some archery practice. finrod -- he fell in love with me at first sight. well, with my race. seriously, he's someone who is wise and loving, and egalitarian. seeing the potential in us, even in our inital, rustic state. and he wanted to help us, and wanted to nurture us. throw in brave, loyal, temperate -- and a +great+ singer. i'd love to hear him sing. elros -- where to begin? what made him choose to share our lot? did he every have any regrets? what about leaving his brother, elrond? he was starting a new kingdom, in a valar-given continent. what were his goals for his reign? what did he hope would come after him? what are his thoughts of mortality and life? we definitely don't hear enough from his perspective. it would be fascinating to hear it. nerdanel -- mega-talented. the one who taught the great feanor secrets of the smith's art. an artist with no rivals in her own right. what were her dreams for her family? what did she want to achieve for herself? gandalf -- clever, articulate, wise, warm, and somewhat mercurial. loves a good audience, and i'd surely be that. wonderful person, and most interesting. if he's looking for another wizard's pupil, i'll apply. those rascally hobbits -- self-explanatory. cheery, sociable, lovers of food and humor. love to hear their perspectives. cheers -- .

... i don't even know who lawrence taylor is. (though, to be fair, i was racking my brain trying to figure out what lotr / hobbit male actor had the initials, "lt." the closest i got was "legolas thranduilion," but that's a character name, not an actor name.) cheers -- .

I think first I would invite Legolas, he's always been my favorite character, and I'd like to know more about his family and life before he travels to Rivendell and joins the fellowship. Then if he couldn't come I think it would be great to have lunch with Faramir and Eowyn, (not sure which order I would invite them in if it's lunch with only one character). ...And of course the hobbits (meaning Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Bilbo) would be great dinner guests! ...Theoden would be great too...

Bilbo, post-adventure Sit for some tea and then pull out the pipes for smoke rings. Ask him about Smaug and get him talking about the company. Although he might be fiddling with the ring as we chat...that'd be weird. Boromir and/or Gimli if drinking was involved. Seems obvious. Sam, but only if he brings the ol' Gaffer. Faramir for deep conversation.

I do wonder: there's a lot to be said for meeting someone a while after their adventure or achievement - give them time to gain perspective.
and in Bilbo's case not to be self-deluding about how he got The Ring!
