Agreed. I think it's a great little scene with heart and whimsy. [In reply to] Can't Post

Also, it's possible that Bilbo and Elrond have more interaction in the EE, thus justifying their sudden conversation.

It's not that the scene is amazing or anything, but it offers character development. And at least it gives Bilbo some more screen time in Rivendell, which is one of my biggest gripes with AUJ in the first place.

Perhaps Elrond finds amusement only in the original "The Office" (or its cast). Tongue

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Love it! [In reply to] Can't Post

I love this little scene it brings a smile to my face seeing little Bilbo interact with this powerful elf lord, casually joking with him then being alarmed when he thanks he's offended him lol. I love his "really?" line they should have just replaced it with "wait, are you serious?" cause that's exactly how he said it. I'm glad they added the "Elves say no and yes" line I always wanted to hear it in the films and I'm glad they included it in The Hobbit no less. See these guys have done their homework.

And I Love this Extended Edition cover art too.

I like the other one with Bilbo wide eyed holding sting but I hope That pic comes off and the cover looks more like the LOTR Extended. It would match up very well with the others in mu collection.

I saw it the same way. [In reply to] Can't Post

Elrond seems to me to have a lurking twinkle behind the serious face in several scenes in AUJ (such as the look he gives Gandalf when he's blindsided by Saruman). But senses of humor vary widely and not everyone likes deadpan, or even picks up on it, so it's not surprising that people respond differently to this scene. They're underplaying it, but I see hints of warmth and the beginnings of what will (later) become affection and friendship under the surface here.

Mileage obviously varies. Smile

That is why Bilbo gives that little "laugh" there at the end..like "Ha! I got you!" Elrond just gives a bemused smile. I thought it was touching.

This sets up the later teasing affection between Bilbo and the elves. [In reply to] Can't Post

From FOTR, "Many Meetings"

Quote
Elrond went forward and stood beside the silent figure. 'Awake, little master!' he said, with a smile. Then turning to Frodo, he beckoned to him. 'Now at last the hour has come that you have wished for, Frodo,' he said. 'Here is a friend that you have long missed.'
.......
'What were you doing?"

'Why, sitting and thinking. I do a lot of that nowadays, and this is the best place to do it in, as a rule. Wake up, indeed!' he said, cocking an eye at Elrond. There was a bright twinkle in it and no sign of sleepiness that Frodo could see. 'Wake up! I was not asleep, Master Elrond. If you want to know, you have all come out from your feasting too soon, and you have disturbed me - in the middle of making up a song......I shall have to get my friend The Dunadan to help me with it. Where is he?'

Elrond laughed. 'He shall be found,' he said. 'Then you two shall go into a corner and finish your task, and we will hear it and judge it before we finish our merrymaking.'

The person the dwarves see as a stuffy gentleman hobbit is finding he is understood and accepted for who he is by these other amazing creatures. They find mutual delight in each other, probably to their mutual surprise. Bilbo's humour does not suit the dwarves, but it seems to mesh with the Rivendell elves. There are some people I meet who "get" me and my humour and others who don't. Lucky Bilbo, to have Lord Elrond as one who "gets" him. Wink

Character moments ... [In reply to] Can't Post

It's little character moments like this that could've made AUJ a film on par with Fellowship. Perhaps PJ could've trimmed a few action scenes and added this?

when there's a genuine lack of response, as opposed to the character in question seeming like he regrets initiating the conversation for most the scene (starring off of balcony with consternation) ETC.

Agreed that Elrond having a "lurking twinkle" in the WC seems like personal interpretation (seemed like he was welcoming Sarumam to me) - though phrase does sound like a most interesting Lovecraft story! Tongue

...from where Bilbo ascends the staircase and sees the shards of Narsil. I would also hazard a guess that Elrond comes across Bilbo looking at the shards/at the murals, etc and initiates a conversation at that point, not just when they go out on the balcony.

The extended version of 'The White Council' track [In reply to] Can't Post

Suggests Bilbo's exploration of Rivendell and look at the shards of Narsil will take place just before this scene. I'm guessing Elrond probably does glimpse Bilbo looking and then follows him up the stairs and out onto the balcony.

Whole-heartedly agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I've watched this scene a dozen times since it was posted. I n fact it was the first thing I logged on to this morning. It's beautiful and charming and whimsical and everything one hopes Bilbo's and Elrond's relationship to be. Loved the POV. BTW we don't know where this scene fall in the scheme of the Rivendell hiatus, so not having the context makes interpreting the scene a little iffy. But it does give added weight to Bilbo's response to Bofur's question in the cave -- "Back to Rivendell."

And I think Thorin and Balin and Gandalf come along together [In reply to] Can't Post

after Elrond and Bilbo have had their own time together. So maybe the map reading scene will follow. And with Balin so aggravated looking in the beginning of that scene maybe there will be a bit of a bridge added in too, Elrond saying something Balin and Thorin don't like much, but Thorin overcomes it and allows him to read the map anyway.

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to here from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

I will admit that I had initially found it a bit odd
that Bilbo mentioned to Elrond his Dwarf companions not
wanting his company. Does this seem strange, given this
to be Bilbo's first personal encounter with the Elven Lord Elrond
in his own spendid abode? Would the dynamics of his inclusion
into the Dwarven company be secondary to the novel occasion of
meeting Elrond? That is, might his nascent if not initially inauspicious
participation within the party be a mere trifle given the spontaneity of
the particular situation and conversation he finds himself engaged?

I do like the line where he mentions the Dwarves not missing his company.
I just wondered about the follow-up to this "quip." But the follow-up may be in
the spirit of the character Bilbo and not an addition to the plethora of
expositions on the desired themes of home and Hobbit resiliency underlining
this particular film and the story whole.

What of Elrond's character interaction in this scene? You mentioned that he is
weirdly empathetic. Hmmm... I wonder if his lines regarding Hobbit resiliency and
the comforts of home might have contributed to an interesting dynamic for this particular scene.
That is, might it be difficult, judging this scene detached from its particular place within the whole,
to understand what home or resiliency has to do with their immediate situation at hand? What
is pertinent and spontaneous about their interaction? Elrond almost deigns to accomodate Bilbo's
putative feelings of insecurity or, rather, self-righteous understanding of his own supposed shortcomings,
given this particular Erebor endeavor in which he is attached. This, however, could all be deliberate storytelling.
Interesting to ponder nonetheless. For instance, Elrond doesn't pursue Bilbo's revelations head-on, but
examines his situation indirectly. I'm kind of glad for this much at least.

I, for one, really enjoyed Elrond's last line. What a nice welcome to Rivendell!

Thoughts?

Great points Brethil [In reply to] Can't Post

I always thought Balin's composure there or lack of it in that scene wasn't quite right. I didn't find it so bad it destroyed the scene I just felt it was odd when he says "Thorin, no!" and tries to reach for the map. You may be right that there is some kind of bridge scene there. That would make total sense.

Resiliency and Home. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's interesting you mention this duality. I find it ironic that Elrond presents these two
characteristics of Hobbits in that one seemingly would push Bilbo onward, as you imply,
while the other would ensnare him to his present situation. Ironic is it that home actually
drives Bilbo onward rather than resiliency. In fact, Bilbo has not yet a concept
of his own resiliency. Elrond, perhaps sensing Bilbo's incredulity toward this insight,
shares in addition his acknowledgement of a hobbit's penchant for home. To this, Bilbo cannot
deny. It is home, rather than resiliency, at this early stage, which resonates with him and drives him forward
in the initial stages of the journey. Bilbo ultimately expresses as much toward the film's finale.

In the latter stages of the story, we'll see if resiliency factors into Bilbo's adversities, more so than mere affinity
with the 'homeland.'

Perhaps, as you mention, this dichotomy of hobbit inclinations, so to speak, relates to Bilbo's quip to the Elves supposed
ambivilence, in 'yes' and 'no.' Elrond commiserates with Bilbo with resiliency, which didn't take. Home, however, strikes a chord.
To this purpose however, is not a leaning toward the past, the present, or the future. It propels into the unknown out of commiseration
with the Dwarves' plight, rather than ensnares into established comfort and security. Either way, Elrond welcomes him to
Rivendell...
THoughts?
