Take any of the constant bird poo criticism to heart. I don't understand it.  . Dale will be back, I thought it might. Im gonna watch again, but it didn't seem like a lot of meat on the bone. Then again, I don't want many spoilers.

He told Swedish newspaper some time ago that he was supposed to go back to New Zeeland this summer for pick-ups.
They have really kept him secret not showing anything almost except for the bear face in the door in the trailer and the bear in the poster.. But nothing of the human shaped beorn??

It's still unclear how big Beorn's role will turn out to be, especially after the 3 film split. Now, there's so much going on that Beorn could easily be cut completely.

Didn't PJ once said in an interview how they've expanded Beorn's role in the movies because they loved Mikael's portrayal of Beorn? And this was also after the decision to turn it into a trilogy.

Could have phrased that better (I did not mean to offend anyone), but was it just me or was the middle of the three Elves (admittedly probably an extra or stuntman in costume) an Asian? Could PJ be going the Laktown route and Making the Elves more ethically diverse? Is this backed up by the books? Were the different clans of Elves actually seperate races?
On a side note nice to See PJ has abadoned greenscreen...
Still Dale looks very promising.
I will repeat my catchphrase 'Dammit still No Billy Connoly!)
This is not a very interesting signature is it?

See this thread and also this thread. I can't remember PJ ever confirming this, but I could be wrong.
Since we rarely hear about Beorn/Persbrandt, I'm guessing his re-shoots and pick-ups could've been and gone.

The town looks quite large to me, compared to artists renderings over the year. Perhaps the contingent of Men in the Bo5A isn't so small as we believe?

I loved it last year. It was the first time in the years I've been going Middle-earth had such a huge presence. Them not going is a bummer because I was looking forward to camping out and seeing the panel. I agree that next year they will be there I'm sure rocking the con. This year is still going to be great with all the product for the movies, TORn panel, hanging with my fellow TORn staffers, and hanging with my many friends that show up. So it's still a win. :-) I'm with ya! These movies are going to be fantastic.

That shot of Thranduil in his silver armour appears to be set in Dol Guldur, the rocks look similar - or I could just be mistaken and it may be Dale? Anyway, I'm still confused about the elves involvement in the Battle Of Dol Guldur.... I remember a few months ago when the idea of Tauriel being given the Witch Kings prophecy surfaced and everyone was in uproar. Is this still on, and if it is, doesn't it make sense that she should be at Dol Guldur and not Dale/Laketown?

Great to see everyone back together down there, even though some have already left now. They all seem very excited about this film, which is great to me. It's awesome how much fun they have during downtime, when sets are being prepared. I know, from experience, that the downtime between takes/shots is very important for morale and performance. So I love the dynamic between everyone in NZ!
I noticed a nice Steadicam shot of Gandalf/Thrain walking in Dol Guldur. Great to see so much diversity in shots with these films. Also a fantastic use of actors on different planes in the frame throughout the vlog, too.
Story-wise, I'm also interested as to why Gandalf, Tauriel, and Legolas are with *at the least* Bilbo in Dale. I would guess there are some minor alterations being made to the period before the BoFA, mainly concerning all of the emissaries of Lake-town and the Woodland Realm. I need to watch the vlog again, though, so I don't draw erroneous conclusions based on quick snippets of video I've watched twice  .
I'm really excited, as always, for the next few months. I'm sure the effects team is working diligently on the multitude of CGI for various shots and creatures. And, personally, I'm sort of happy that Beorn hasn't been revealed to us in any capacity (other than in the trailer, assuming it is him). I like having some things kept in total mystery before I see it. But I do understand those asking for a little bit of a sneak peek into his human form.
All in all, awesome stuff!

its an odd choice but whatever. I dont think its a good idea to have extras that pop out and take you out of the moment because you are going 'hey look at that guy', but whatever.
I must say that I have so much respect and admiration for the crew. They are so talented and creative, it must be great to work with such dedicated and enthusiastic people, no wonder they all enjoy themselves.

PJ: Hi, welcome to the new blog! But before that, I just want to pass on some news which I'm sure is going to be disappointing to anyone going to ComiCon this year - any fans - that a couple of days ago I told Warners that I just really wasn't ready to present anything of the Desolation of Smaug at ComiCon this year. The reasons for that are...well, there are several, really. We're still shooting and we're going to be shooting through the period of ComiCon and so we looked at what actors we could send, you know, to make a really cool panel. There wasn't really anybody available, I can't go, so faced with that the prospect was then, you know, record some messages, have a really cool sizzle reel. But you know, the problem is I'm so busy shooting, working 6 days a week trying to get these pickups done that every hour that I spend focusing on a really great reel for ComiCon, and it would have to be great, would be hours spent away from the vital job of making the second and third Hobbit films as cool as they can possibly be. I mean, this is the last ditch shooting that we're doing and it's going fantastic and these are going to be great movies. And I just had to take the ComiCon burden, if you like, off my shoulders because I'm very very hands-on on those reels, as I should, I want them to be fantastic and I really didn't want to send anything this year that was going to be less than fantastic so I'm sure you'll understand. We're going to jump back into it and keep shooting, doing everything we can to make sure these next two films are fantastic and they're going to be great. And I'm sure you'll see more of the movie as the year goes on, just nothing at ComiCon this year. But the good news out of this is that we have a new video blog, so let's roll that. Thank you.

PJ: Hello! Welcome to the first blog of 2013. And this is a block of a few weeks of shooting we're doing, it's what we call pick-up shooting.
Crew member: Yo, we're back! Look out!
Jared Connon: We rebuilt the unit base, we rebuilt the trailer park here at Stone Street.
Glenn Shaw: Putting the jigsaw back together for us, literally. Brought in all the makeup, costume, prosthetics vehicles. Crew's arriving, everybody is happy about being back again.
Misc Crew members: Oh, Hello! Hi!
Driver: Boys are amped, pumped, looking forward to it. Fire it up, get amongst it.
Ann Maskrey: Shoot it! We're just going to shoot it.
PJ: When we finished principal photography last year, we stored all the sets in huge big warehouses, all the costumes, the cast are all flying back into New Zealand. It's a reunion of people, props, and sets.
Norm Willerton: We are very much in full swing. We're bringing Laketown back, we're bringing Mirkwood Forest back, we'll be revisiting Dale...
Unknown: It's been covered up for years. We're just pulling off all the coverings right now.
Norm Willerton: We knew it was going to be pretty fast. And true to form, it is.
Construction foreman: Can't actually see the plans because I left my spectacles at home. So I've got Dave the Punk here...
Dave: Hi!
Foreman:...who is going to be my eyes.
Dave: I don't actually know how to use a scale ruler, so this should be interesting.
Chris Hennah: For our props and set deck, it's finding all the props. We have warehouses full of props.
Ra Vincent: This is an off-site prop store that we've put together for film two. Over here we've got the contents of the Dale armory. There are over 2000 items made specific for that one scene. This, of course, is the kitchen. Our kitchen is shared with some corpses. Every space is valuable when you're talking about prop storage.
Glenn Boswell: Ok, here we are again, we're actually waiting for the actors to come en masse, all together for the first time so it's really going to be good to see them all together after about six, seven months. Hugs and kisses and then we can get to some fighting.
Glenn, to actors: Here we go again, yes all right!
Graham McTavish: Good to be back, apart from with these two.
Dean O'Gorman: Thanks.
Stephen Hunter: Marvelous. See? That's marvelous.
Graham: I mean it is good to be back but technically I would rather be back with somebody else other than these two.
Dean: Son of a b***h. It's Groundhog Day.
Stephen: And it's all good, I mean that was fun.
Fight trainer: Slice some arachtite (sic)
Jed Brophy to Graham McTavish: That was really adequate, man. Lovely move.
Fight trainer: Golf clap. I mean, no, big clap! They all hate my guts.
John Callen: Really, really hate him.
PJ: Of course, we've also got the Battle of the Five Armies, which is for the third Hobbit movie. In fact, while we're talking about the Battle of the Five Armies, we obviously can't show you any of that. However, we are putting our dwarves through a very extensive training regime. They have to be fighting fit for that battle and so they're working very hard at the moment.
Adam Brown: Ok, so in preparation for the Battle of Five Armies, all of us dwarves have been doing some rigorous training and you've caught us just as we're about to start one.
Jed Brophy: And...up, down, up, down...pump! Come on, pump them thighs! A little bit of running now...

Jed: open it up, open up the pelvis...well done!
Mark Hadlow: We're fit fighting machines.
PJ: And to give you a sense of what pick-ups are, we shot about 18 months ago down at the Pelorus River in the South Island.
Bard: Now, that would get you killed.
PJ: We were filming and then got flooded out by a flash storm. So here we are 18 months later in the relative safety, hopefully, of the back lot. The weather's not looking too bad, hopefully we're not going to get a flood through here and we're just doing a little bit more shooting for the scene on the riverbank.
Balin: You're from Laketown, if I'm not mistaken.
PJ: It will look exactly the same, I promise you, when you see it in the movie. Exactly the same.
Peter King: Pick-ups, what does it mean? It means getting your poo exactly the same. We are having to do pick-ups with Radagast and we have to make sure that his poo looks like it did a year ago. And that's sometimes difficult because we all know, poo changes. And it dries out and it cracks, and so now we've got to replace the poo and make it look exactly the same.
Sylvester McCoy: People actually do collect my poo. It's on sale at a shop near you.
Liz Mullane: No, the number's not working. Aw, man, that's like the third one this morning. For the pick-ups we need lots of people and I've been ringing, trying to get people. They've changed their numbers, they've moved, What is that?
Victoria Beynon: I'm trying to find Elves. And of the 30 Elves that we've had I have about two that can confirm so far. One of them's in the London Ballet now and the other one has put on 40lbs.
Liz: That's selfish.
Victoria: You know, I'm over it.
Liz: No! Oh my god, I've got a whole lot of people to ring and now there's a fire alarm.
Emergency Coordinator: Yearly drill, look at their happy, smiley faces.
Liz: There are some great faces on the crew. Really good Laketowners. Maybe not any Elves.
Peter King: Still making bird poo!
PJ: Because the pick-up scenes are really spanning the width of the second and third Hobbit movies, we're really traveling to most of the destinations that those films do.
PJ to dwarves: Thank you for being here again, in the webs. You look like you never left. You've got the same smells, the same fungus is growing inside your bl***y costumes...
Stephen Hunter: It's weird how comforting it all just feels.
Bofur: Oh yeah, uh-huh.
Nori: All I'm saying, that's the last date we have, ok? Go to a movie, he said. Go down on the beach, but no! I wake up, I'm covered in this stuff. Not only that, those are all those exes over there!
PJ: And, action!
Gandalf: Legolas Greenleaf! And you...?
Tauriel: Hi! I'm Tauriel, very nice to meet you.
Gandalf: Hello, welcome to the film!
Evangeline Lilly: We're shooting right now in the Smaug-desolated Dale, therefore the title of the film; the Desolation of Smaug.I was here last year when this set was in its full glory and looked incredible. It looked like a beautiful European plaza. Now it's winter and there's snow everywhere and it's really dramatic.
Orlando: I popped my cherry on the fake horse today, having Evie on the back. And the first time they had us sit up and she was behind me, we were both moving in rhythm and she's behind me and it's like...*cackles*
PJ: We've been shooting for a week or so now, so we've got a little bit of footage from the first week which we'll put into this blog and the plan is to do another blog at the end of the pick-up shooting so we can bring you up to speed with whatever's going to happen over the next few weeks.
Luke Evans: Bard Marty(?)...of Laketown. We're back in Laketown, this is the fifth version of this town that's been built for the movie and we're here to do pick-ups, right?
John Bell (Bain): Pick-ups for 10 weeks.
Luke: I've played this character for a whole year in this environment, and not once did I fall in the water. And what happened on my first day back? As you can see, this man has grown. Because this is his normal size.
John: Everyone keeps telling me I've grown.
Luke: In the film, he will be this size, which is appropriate, because he's my son. We hope that you come and check in with us in the next few months when we'll be showing you a little bit more of hobbits and amazing sets and locations we're working on.
John Bell: I can't wait to get started.
Luke: Don't grow any more, please. Don't grow any more.
John: I can't promise that.
Luke: This is ridiculous now, it's ridiculous!
