Felt more like 5. Wink Probably the most hilarious moment (Dwarvercising) shown in any of the previous production videos. It's a shame that there won't be any footage shown at Comic-Con this year - but like PJ says, I'd rather they concentrated on filming the film, than pleasing the fans.

I didn't catch anything particularly spoiler-y, did anyone else? Will have to watch it again, but more closely. It suggested to me that Tauriel, Legolas and Gandalf meet Bilbo in Dale? Perhaps this is the moment Bilbo hands over the Arkenstone? And where there 3 people (wizards?) walking around Dol Guldur?

The dwarf yoga thing ... omg hahahha I love these guys!
Thranduil in that armour! So we'll see him fight in DOS?

Why are Legolas and Tauriel on a fake horse? I don't feel like complaining about the overuse of CGI (I mean that is done everywhere), but in LotR they placed their actors on actual horses (you know, they do exsist unlike giant extint elks) and have them gallop down fields or sit on those horse barrel thingies. I miss that.

Did you guys notice Fili holding Kili up in the video? Orc wound has to come from there somewhere then!

Didn't really get much out of this one. Some terrible, corny humour (it was!) and the music was awful - where's the Howard Shore stuff gone, either from LOTR or The Hobbit? Why the use of the trailer theme to that extent?

One thing that did intrigue me were the Orcs at 2:03, which look a heavily armoured sort. I guess this must be for the BoFA. Hopefully this means we won't see an overuse of CGI soldiers and lots of 'real' ones.

Yay! [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad to get another Vlog it has been a while!

It does look like the scene with Bilbo, Gandalf and Tauriel may be the handing over of the Arkenstone. Perhaps Thranduil is too vain to collect himself so he saids his most trusted allies? I think I saw Thrain with Gandalf in one of the Dol Guldor (it was shot of the set from above, you can see Gandalf and someone else running through it) so perhaps that was the 3rd person, it might just have been Radagast though.

Looks like part of the Battle of The Five armies will be in Dale, you can see a geared up Thranduil fighting for a second. There also seemed to be armoured prosthetic orcs that reminded me a bit of the Morgul/Morrian Orcs from the Return of the King but again it was a split second shot so don't take my word.

Lego and Tauriel on a fake horse? Wonder if it will become a giant Stag?

Yes, my username is terrible.

Some interesting points [In reply to] Can't Post

Saw finished the VBlog, but I noticed some items:

- Seems like there will be more time spent in Dale. Interesting to see Tauriel there with the Dwarves; thought Bard was the one that takes the Dwarves there, but could it be Tauriel who runs away from home to accompany the Dwarves?

- Not sure if it is the same scene but you also see a battle at what looks like modern day (ruined) Dale at 1:59, where you see Gandalf there and Thrandruil there too in battle armor. This this a glimpse of the Battle of the 5 Armies in Dale?

- Does Gandalf wake up Thrain? There was a quick clip of Gandalf in Dol Guldur following what looks like a dwarf, who seems to be leading Gandalf around (7:56).

- Looks like Bard meets the Dwarves at the end of their river journey, but he does not look too pleased to see them.

- Bard has a son?

Seems like my prediction came true and there are people fighting in Dale against what seems to be orcs?

Also, nice armor designs there, although the mirkwood elves remind me a bit of the Lothlorien ones.

Edit: I thought a while ago that there was going to be a fight between Lake town and the orcs before the BOFA, unless the BOFA takes place in Dale, which seems weird.

Very Excited to see Gandalf with Legolas and hoping to see him with Thranduil [In reply to] Can't Post

There hasn't been enough interaction with him and Elves who are noble but NOT nearly on par with incarnate Wizards. I also love the dynamic.

As to Dol Guldur. . . I believe what we see is Thrain leading Gandalf, which suggests it is not a Zombie of Thrain after all.

Very curious about Bilbo seemingly with Gandalf in Dale, I must say. THat is unexpected.

Thranduil looks magnificent, and Gandalf's beard looked good in a number of the clips.

Some of the other action I will haev to take A closer look at as of right now. lol

Spoiler list after first view [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are a few things I've noticed during my first view of it. I think there's much more when I rewatch it later:

DOL GULDUR
- Gandalf is following Thrain through Dol Guldur
- Gandalf reveals his fear about the Necromancer to Radagast before or after their visit (I think it's before)
- Radagast again rolls the R very strong

WOODLAND REALM
- Thranduil wears a lot of different costumes... it seems to be an Elven thing ;-)
- Legolas and Tauriel riding one horse haven't they more?
- Thranduils silver armor looks amazing in action
- The Elven armor from Thranduils army looks even better reminded me a little bit of the Lorien armor at Helms Deep

DALE
- The set is just great, especially with the snow
- Gandalf, Bilbo, Tauriel and Legolas Greenleaf meet in Dale but when? Is it the Arkenstone scene? Or is it from the second movie? But what is Gandalf doing there if it's not the Arkenstone scene?

GUNDABAD ORCS
- Lot's of prothetic Orcs. That's how we like them!
- Armor looks a little like the Mordor Orc armor but it was only a very brief shot

LAKE TOWN
- Looks again amazing. Already one of my favourite places in Middle-earth

In the end: A fantastic but short vlog, can't wait for the next one.

Only thing to say: Again almost no Bilbo but again lot's of Legolas, Tauriel and Thranduil

I really appreciate that they continue... [In reply to] Can't Post

to take the time to engage us, the fans.

To have this kind of access to the process, behind the scenes, and show us as much as they do... all while having fun with it, is very unique.

In an extremely demanding industry, it shows a lot of confidence and risk, to expose your artistry to the masses before the work is finished. They walk a very fine line of teasing us and giving us just enough, without spoiling it all. To me, they've walked that line very well. I always come away from the vlogs with a smile and a lot of anticipation for the next one... and of course an even greater excitement (if possible) of seeing the final movie(s).

As I've maintained in previous posts, I think AUJ was excellent and created the necessary expository setup. The Hobbit is deceivingly deep for a "children's tale".

The decision to make 3 movies is not a mistake in my book.

I believe this next movie is going to be huge. I certainly hope so. I can't wait to see it.

Do you think that Gandalf reveals his fear on the way to Dol Guldur or before/after the High Fells immediately ?! Before the Fells it cant really be,because Raddy apeears so suddenly there...i really believe its right after the Fells or Mirkwood.

Yea I forgot about the High Fells [In reply to] Can't Post

That would be another possibility yes. We know from the live event that the two visit the tombs which where not located in Dol Guldur but Rhudaur.

In this sequence it looks not like Mirkwood or Dol Guldur too me and Gandalf doesn't look that sure either. If he was sure that Sauron is back he would be looking much more scared/worried. This could be directly after the tomb scene. His fear is: The Nazgûl escaped their tombs. Which is a "grrrrrreat danger" to the world but not as dangerous as the return of the Dark Lord himself... we'll see but I think it might be after the High Fells scene.

Btw, did we ever got some location picture from the High Fells, except the picture from the chronicles ?! I cant remember...but,if that is right after the Fells, possibly in some kind of mountains, there is also a tree, which looks really ill and diseased, a hint for Mirkwood ? On the other side, where Gandalfs stands there are rocks, which could be a hint for mountains or the area around the High Fells.

Dwarves encounter Smaug [In reply to] Can't Post

I guess this vlog confirms that the dwarves do encounter Smaug in the film and not just Bilbo. There is a shot of the dwarves backing away on set and there is intense red and orange flickering light pushing them backwards, indicating that Smaug and the party have a confrontation of some sort or maybe they see him as he seethingly bursts out of Erebor towards lake town, either of which I believe is an improvement on the book! the shot is at 1:54 into the vlog if you care to give your take on it!

It is the little things in life that keep the darkness at bay.

Comic Con [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah I am not surprised they aren't going. I figured it would be tight with all the finishing to do on both of the final 2 movies. There are no pickups next year I believe so they need to get it done now. That's a lot to crunch in between now and December and the actors are only available for a certain amount of time. That and i think a lot of the cast had other commitments so it was tough to get people for a panel. It's all good.

What if it is an elk? [In reply to] Can't Post

I was thinking that it was probably something besides a horse since the two of them are able to ride together (not that this can't happen on a regular horse). I think it could be one of the giant elks, which would make it a nice continuity with the AUJ prologue.

Of course, it could just be a horse in the film. Other actors in LOTR actually did something similar for the close-ups. Liv Tyler and David Wenham both rode fake horses at one time or another.

AUJ felt too small for me. Yes, there were some big CGI shots and location vistas but all that was more like window dressing with very little real drama going on.

This reshoots/pickups look far more solid and intense. It's Pirates of the Caribbean time with Laketown! :D

As much as I'd like to see them at comic con (and I suspect they will be there next year with bells on as they say) I want them to get the movies done and done right so yeah I'll take it. Now I will admit if they don't show next year I will be disappointed. I think they will be though. For one thing I know some of the cast, like Freeman, had commitments when Comic con was taking place (Ep 3 of Sherlock is scheduled to be filmed then) and also I think some of the dwarf cast did as well so they just couldn't make it. Plenty of time to plan for next year and I'm sure TABA is going to go forth with a bang and they will throw all they have and the kitchen sink into rolling out the publicity for it. So it's all good and we can look forward to some great movies!

Could have phrased that better (I did not mean to offend anyone), but was it just me or was the middle of the three Elves (admittedly probably an extra or stuntman in costume) an Asian? Could PJ be going the Laktown route and Making the Elves more ethically diverse? Is this backed up by the books? Were the different clans of Elves actually seperate races?

On a side note nice to See PJ has abadoned greenscreen...

Still Dale looks very promising.

This year is still going to be great with all the product for the movies, TORn panel, hanging with my fellow TORn staffers, and hanging with my many friends that show up. Thranduil and Elves at Dol Guldur.... [In reply to] Can't Post

That shot of Thranduil in his silver armour appears to be set in Dol Guldur, the rocks look similar - or I could just be mistaken and it may be Dale? Anyway, I'm still confused about the elves involvement in the Battle Of Dol Guldur.... I remember a few months ago when the idea of Tauriel being given the Witch Kings prophecy surfaced and everyone was in uproar. Is this still on, and if it is, doesn't it make sense that she should be at Dol Guldur and not Dale/Laketown?

Really neat stuff! [In reply to] Can't Post

Great to see everyone back together down there, even though some have already left now. They all seem very excited about this film, which is great to me. It's awesome how much fun they have during downtime, when sets are being prepared. I know, from experience, that the downtime between takes/shots is very important for morale and performance. So I love the dynamic between everyone in NZ!

I noticed a nice Steadicam shot of Gandalf/Thrain walking in Dol Guldur. Great to see so much diversity in shots with these films. Also a fantastic use of actors on different planes in the frame throughout the vlog, too.

Story-wise, I'm also interested as to why Gandalf, Tauriel, and Legolas are with *at the least* Bilbo in Dale. I would guess there are some minor alterations being made to the period before the BoFA, mainly concerning all of the emissaries of Lake-town and the Woodland Realm. I need to watch the vlog again, though, so I don't draw erroneous conclusions based on quick snippets of video I've watched twice Wink.

I'm really excited, as always, for the next few months. I'm sure the effects team is working diligently on the multitude of CGI for various shots and creatures. And, personally, I'm sort of happy that Beorn hasn't been revealed to us in any capacity (other than in the trailer, assuming it is him). I like having some things kept in total mystery before I see it. But I do understand those asking for a little bit of a sneak peek into his human form.

All in all, awesome stuff! Smile

TRANSCRIPT! Get your Vlog 11 transcript here! [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ: Hi, welcome to the new blog! But before that, I just want to pass on some news which I'm sure is going to be disappointing to anyone going to ComiCon this year - any fans - that a couple of days ago I told Warners that I just really wasn't ready to present anything of the Desolation of Smaug at ComiCon this year. The reasons for that are...well, there are several, really. We're still shooting and we're going to be shooting through the period of ComiCon and so we looked at what actors we could send, you know, to make a really cool panel. There wasn't really anybody available, I can't go, so faced with that the prospect was then, you know, record some messages, have a really cool sizzle reel. But you know, the problem is I'm so busy shooting, working 6 days a week trying to get these pickups done that every hour that I spend focusing on a really great reel for ComiCon, and it would have to be great, would be hours spent away from the vital job of making the second and third Hobbit films as cool as they can possibly be. I mean, this is the last ditch shooting that we're doing and it's going fantastic and these are going to be great movies. And I just had to take the ComiCon burden, if you like, off my shoulders because I'm very very hands-on on those reels, as I should, I want them to be fantastic and I really didn't want to send anything this year that was going to be less than fantastic so I'm sure you'll understand. We're going to jump back into it and keep shooting, doing everything we can to make sure these next two films are fantastic and they're going to be great. And I'm sure you'll see more of the movie as the year goes on, just nothing at ComiCon this year. But the good news out of this is that we have a new video blog, so let's roll that. Thank you.

Radagast:
Gandalf, if what you say is true, the world is in grave danger.

PJ:
A new blog is sweeping in from the north!

Thorin:
"Balin!"

PJ: And...cut!

PJ:
Hello! Welcome to the first blog of 2013. And this is a block of a few weeks of shooting we're doing, it's what we call pick-up shooting.

Crew member: Yo, we're back! Look out!

Jared Connon:
We rebuilt the unit base, we rebuilt the trailer park here at Stone Street.

Glenn Shaw:
Putting the jigsaw back together for us, literally. Brought in all the makeup, costume, prosthetics vehicles. Crew's arriving, everybody is happy about being back again.

Misc Crew members:
Oh, Hello! Hi!

Driver: Boys are amped, pumped, looking forward to it. Fire it up, get amongst it.

Ann Maskrey: Shoot it! We're just going to shoot it.

PJ: When we finished principal photography last year, we stored all the sets in huge big warehouses, all the costumes, the cast are all flying back into New Zealand. It's a reunion of people, props, and sets.

Norm Willerton: We are very much in full swing. We're bringing Laketown back, we're bringing Mirkwood Forest back, we'll be revisiting Dale...

Unknown: It's been covered up for years. We're just pulling off all the coverings right now.

Norm Willerton: We knew it was going to be pretty fast. And true to form, it is.

Construction foreman: Can't actually see the plans because I left my spectacles at home. So I've got Dave the Punk here...

Dave: Hi!

Foreman:...who is going to be my eyes.

Dave: I don't actually know how to use a scale ruler, so this should be interesting.

Chris Hennah: For our props and set deck, it's finding all the props. We have warehouses full of props.

Ra Vincent: This is an off-site prop store that we've put together for film two. Over here we've got the contents of the Dale armory. There are over 2000 items made specific for that one scene. This, of course, is the kitchen. Our kitchen is shared with some corpses. Every space is valuable when you're talking about prop storage.

Glenn Boswell: Ok, here we are again, we're actually waiting for the actors to come en masse, all together for the first time so it's really going to be good to see them all together after about six, seven months. Hugs and kisses and then we can get to some fighting.

Glenn, to actors: Here we go again, yes all right!

Graham McTavish: Good to be back, apart from with these two.
Dean O'Gorman: Thanks.
Stephen Hunter: Marvelous. See? That's marvelous.
Graham: I mean it is good to be back but technically I would rather be back with somebody else other than these two.
Dean: Son of a b***h. It's Groundhog Day.
Stephen: And it's all good, I mean that was fun.

Fight trainer: Slice some arachtite (sic)

Jed Brophy to Graham McTavish: That was really adequate, man. Lovely move.

Fight trainer: Golf clap. I mean, no, big clap! They all hate my guts.
John Callen: Really, really hate him.

PJ: Of course, we've also got the Battle of the Five Armies, which is for the third Hobbit movie. In fact, while we're talking about the Battle of the Five Armies, we obviously can't show you any of that. However, we are putting our dwarves through a very extensive training regime. They have to be fighting fit for that battle and so they're working very hard at the moment.

Adam Brown: Ok, so in preparation for the Battle of Five Armies, all of us dwarves have been doing some rigorous training and you've caught us just as we're about to start one.

Jed Brophy: And...up, down, up, down...pump! Come on, pump them thighs! A little bit of running now...
Dwarf exercise video shots
Jed: open it up, open up the pelvis...well done!
Mark Hadlow: We're fit fighting machines.

PJ: And to give you a sense of what pick-ups are, we shot about 18 months ago down at the Pelorus River in the South Island.

Bard: Now, that would get you killed.

PJ: We were filming and then got flooded out by a flash storm. So here we are 18 months later in the relative safety, hopefully, of the back lot. The weather's not looking too bad, hopefully we're not going to get a flood through here and we're just doing a little bit more shooting for the scene on the riverbank.

Balin: You're from Laketown, if I'm not mistaken.

PJ: It will look exactly the same, I promise you, when you see it in the movie. Exactly the same.

Peter King:
Pick-ups, what does it mean? It means getting your poo exactly the same. We are having to do pick-ups with Radagast and we have to make sure that his poo looks like it did a year ago. And that's sometimes difficult because we all know, poo changes. And it dries out and it cracks, and so now we've got to replace the poo and make it look exactly the same.

Sylvester McCoy:
People actually do collect my poo. It's on sale at a shop near you.

Liz Mullane: No, the number's not working. Aw, man, that's like the third one this morning. For the pick-ups we need lots of people and I've been ringing, trying to get people. They've changed their numbers, they've moved, What is that?

Victoria Beynon: I'm trying to find Elves. And of the 30 Elves that we've had I have about two that can confirm so far. One of them's in the London Ballet now and the other one has put on 40lbs.

Liz: That's selfish.

Victoria: You know, I'm over it.

Liz: No! Oh my god, I've got a whole lot of people to ring and now there's a fire alarm.

Emergency Coordinator: Yearly drill, look at their happy, smiley faces.

Liz: There are some great faces on the crew. Really good Laketowners. Maybe not any Elves.

Peter King: Still making bird poo!

PJ: Because the pick-up scenes are really spanning the width of the second and third Hobbit movies, we're really traveling to most of the destinations that those films do.

PJ to dwarves:
Thank you for being here again, in the webs. You look like you never left. You've got the same smells, the same fungus is growing inside your bl***y costumes...
Stephen Hunter: It's weird how comforting it all just feels.

Bofur: Oh yeah, uh-huh.

Nori: All I'm saying, that's the last date we have, ok? Go to a movie, he said. Go down on the beach, but no! I wake up, I'm covered in this stuff. Not only that, those are all those exes over there!

PJ: And, action!
Gandalf: Legolas Greenleaf! And you...?
Tauriel: Hi! I'm Tauriel, very nice to meet you.
Gandalf: Hello, welcome to the film!

Evangeline Lilly: We're shooting right now in the Smaug-desolated Dale, therefore the title of the film; the Desolation of Smaug.I was here last year when this set was in its full glory and looked incredible. It looked like a beautiful European plaza. Now it's winter and there's snow everywhere and it's really dramatic.

Orlando: I popped my cherry on the fake horse today, having Evie on the back. And the first time they had us sit up and she was behind me, we were both moving in rhythm and she's behind me and it's like...*cackles*

PJ: We've been shooting for a week or so now, so we've got a little bit of footage from the first week which we'll put into this blog and the plan is to do another blog at the end of the pick-up shooting so we can bring you up to speed with whatever's going to happen over the next few weeks.

Luke Evans: Bard Marty(?)...of Laketown. We're back in Laketown, this is the fifth version of this town that's been built for the movie and we're here to do pick-ups, right?

John Bell (Bain):
Pick-ups for 10 weeks.

Luke: I've played this character for a whole year in this environment, and not once did I fall in the water. And what happened on my first day back? As you can see, this man has grown. Because this is his normal size.
John: Everyone keeps telling me I've grown.
Luke: In the film, he will be this size, which is appropriate, because he's my son. We hope that you come and check in with us in the next few months when we'll be showing you a little bit more of hobbits and amazing sets and locations we're working on.
John Bell: I can't wait to get started.
Luke: Don't grow any more, please. Don't grow any more.
John: I can't promise that.
Luke: This is ridiculous now, it's ridiculous!
John: Thanks for watching!

To be Continued....

Not much Bilbo [In reply to] Can't Post

May not mean much considering this is for pick-ups. The scenes Bilbo is in, I would guess, are to a large degree the ones that were always going to be in a 2-movie Hobbit. Also, while we saw little of him, he must have been present for several of the scenes shown (Bard and the Dwarves in the barrels, and the spider scene, to name two) - they just did not choose to feature him in the vlog, showing us instead more about the new characters from the second movie.

my supposition. [In reply to] Can't Post

Gandalf, Legolas, and Tauriel are fighting the BoFA on the streets of Dale. It is snowing and Gandalf
is fighting orcs. What else could it be? Outfitted Thranduil also appears to be battling amongst ruins.

They mentioned the armory of dale and it being the setting for a particular scene. It also showed human corpses
in the bloodied snow. This can only mean one thing imo... After the dragon Smaug is slain, the people of Laketown
come to resettle Dale. The orc army descends upon the region, and the poor people arm themselves from the old
Dale armories. If there is fighting in Dale's streets though, this has to be one big battle... it must stretch all the way
from Dale to the gates of Erebor? How are the defenders in Dale supposed to rally to Thorin and our company at the gate?
Thoughts?

I do like PJ's opening segment. He seems to be real excited about the upcoming films and wants to ensure the quality of the upcoming
content. I like this. Smile

Thandruil looks wonderful (the little we see of him), and the Lake Town setting is lovely. Great to see the Dwarves again. Costumes and settings look really promising.

Appreciate what PJ said about Comic Con at the beginning – far better for him to remain focused on the film.

But I don't want any Beorn or Smaug spoilers before the film is released – would really prefer to see those for the first time in the film itself.

Thanks Daniel for putting this up! (And thanks to Ainur-Olorin too, for the thought!) [In reply to] Can't Post

I am thrilled to see how multi-dimensional and animated Thranduil comes across as! Was iffy at first about the character but I do like what I am seeing. Confirmation of the other shots we have seen of Thorin within the Mirkwood webbing.

Too bad about ComicCon but I thank them ALL for the effort going into the production instead.

Manwe, when asked a simple "Yes" or "No" question, contemplated, and responded "the middle one."

Thanks Daniel [In reply to] Can't Post

Surprised its taken them this long for a new blog. The sets and costumes look fantastic-More than can be said for Evanglein Lilly's 'acting' (though if I'm honest I'm pretty dissapointed they completey ignored Tolkien's own, very clear conception of Laketown).

Lee Pace shows every sign of being my Richard Armitage (i.e. Giving much unexpected depth to a underdeveloped character-not a fan of Armitage, but Pace looks very very promising), loving Dale in the snow, I'm a little worried that Legolas is being featured so heavily though-don't even try to pretend that's in the appendices PJ!. Glad we are being kept in the dark about Smaug and Beorn.

Was really hoping for a sneak peak at Dain, oh well....

This is not a very interesting signature is it?

Gandalf's staff [In reply to] Can't Post

One of the comments on torn's main page said that Gandalf is weilding a different staff in the glimpse that we him fighting in Dale. What do you guys think?

Here's a few screen-shots. http://imgur.com/a/CUv3N It looks like Radagast's staff with its spindly ends rather than the enclosed shape at the top of Gandalf's staff. So is it Radagast's? We know McCoy has said that his staff becomes "important" to the story later on. So this might confirm that Gandalf takes Raddie's staff.

There's been a lot of speculation that Radagast will die, and it seems like quite a few people here are comfortable with that idea. Despite the fact that I'm not the biggest fan of how he's been portrayed, I would be wholly uncomfortable with him dying. For me it seems extremely cheap to kill him off just because he doesn't appear in the LOTR trilogy.

Does anyone have any other theories? Perhaps Gandalf's staff is simply broken by the Necromancer Unimpressed (ROTK EE Witch-king scene, blech) and Radagast offers his staff to Gandalf.

I can't lie, I'm pretty worried about all this.

I don't like the idea of Radagast's incarnation being destroyed. And, while I would understand Sauron [In reply to] Can't Post

breaking Gandalf's staff (debatable but conceivable) it would be beyond anathema to have The Witch King do it, especially at this stage where he is far less potent (it was outrage enough in the never to be otherwise mentioned ROTK EE scene).

Howver, while the staff IS different in this battle scene, it is worth noting that there is another scene of Gandalf merely standing around in Dale, presumably at the time he meets up with Legolas et al, and the staff is the same as in An Unexpected. . . it could be that we are seeing two entirely different scenes.

Rhudaur [In reply to] Can't Post

On one hand, I have a huge map of Middle-earth in front of me at all times, and they're quite beholden to the map even as they expound upon threads that aren't from the book.

Gandalf mentioned that the Trolls had come down from the Ettenmoors, and the high fells above Rhudaur likely are right where the Ettenmoor peaks merge with the Misty Mountains ... just south of Gundabad. All in these areas constituted Angmar.

P.J. seems to be linking in a straight line bad things like Trolls and Orcs wandering the borders near the Shire with the Nazgul revival.

the rumours were true.Unimpressed

Thought the vblog was underwhelming, a lot of filler, only until half of the video, do i see anything that pariticularly stands out. Despite the first few shots in the beginning.

Since we didnt see BOFA, gandalf fighting orcs in dale, is DOS stuff. How is this possible? Will Gandalf be there with the dwarves when they enter the mountain?

Thranduil is impressively sharp and regal.

Bilbo's out, again.

A lot of green screen. Unsure

We certainly see gandalf following Thrain....two scenes, two flashbacks? A bit too much, no?

The lack of howard shores music doesnt give it that sweet feeling, instead we get the trailer music. Meh.

Dwarves training was dumb and a waste of time but i guess its nonsense fun. Its just stuff i skip while i re watch this video.

More good stuff! [In reply to] Can't Post

I enjoyed the videolog though it seemed short, maybe because PJ took up almost two minutes with his explanation about Comic-Con. Perhaps there are people who are upset about it?

This episode was about pickups so there would naturally be a lot of green screen. If I recall correctly almost all the pickups for LotR were done on sets or the back lot with green screen.

It seems to me likely that most of Martin Freeman’s major stuff was shot during principal photography and some of the pickups could be fleshing out other parts of the story as needed now that we’re getting three films. Obviously Freeman’s presence was still required. We know that PJ really makes his films in the editing room and always needs pickups.

Bard and Bain look good.

Thranduil looks fabulous. These movies have made me interested in the character for the first time.

I loved the dwarvicising segment, particularly Adam Brown and the colored headbands, the fat suits, the Orc. It was just so entrancingly silly! These guys always seem to be having fun though no doubt we just never see the all too human hissy fits etc. One thing I like about the LotR and Hobbit productions is that while everyone seems to work hard, they don’t take it all too seriously.

I didn’t notice the scene with Tauriel and Kili and had to go back and look. All we know is that they seem to be rehearsing together and I won’t worry about it until I see it on the screen.

Trailer, Empire article and videolog – it all looks good to me.

Yep [In reply to] Can't Post

He's not a big fan of participating in these or in the promo stuff for the film (which he has to do by contract). He said that in several interviews. He said for the Vblogs some times they would come by and coax him out of his trailer but that he really doesn't like doing them. Same with the press interviews when the films premiere. He's just a homebody type guy that isn't all that comfortable with doing interviews and such. He has a tendency to swear for one thing, which is tough in interview situations.

This is one reason I don't think we'll see him at a TORN oscar party. I would hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him doing it to be honest. It's really too bad because MF is a terrific actor and seems like a fun guy. I wish he felt more comfortable doing the stuff but he clearly doesn't and PJ and the crew are respecting that as much as they can I think.

Yup [In reply to] Can't Post

and he loss of their privacy is a huge sacrifice I think many, including myself, just don't fully understand. Especially when they become very sought after internationally it's very difficult for them to get private or 'down time' so I can totally get where they come from. You're right we assume because they are in the public persona so much they must like the spotlight but honestly many just want to be left alone. I know Freeman has mentioned that in more than one intervew: That he likes nothing more than to be a homebody, daddy to his kids and have some private time. That is one think they sacrifice that I completely respect.

Living in CA I see it all the time down in LA where idiotic fans go up to them and bug them in a private setting whether it's in the park with their kids, at a restaurant, on the street. I just leave them alone. I just don't like to violate that. I get it if it's a public event but on personal time, I leave them be and I wish others did as well.

Public eye is critical to their success - but it is unfair to presume that because one is a performer one abdicates all personal privacy rights. With our media saturated culture though it is a difficult line to walk.

Coming soon!- The first TORn Amateur Symposium, starts Sunday 21st July in the Reading Room. Closing date for essay submission Sunday 14th July, but even if you don't submit, join us for some interesting discussion on some different and personal ways of looking at Tolkien's work.

Indeed [In reply to] Can't Post

I think MF once said that he gets it that the public stuff he has to do, but the private stuff should be private and people shouldn't bug him and his family. I agree with that. People need to see the line and not cross it. These are people with lives and families and too much media all the time means that line gets crossed more often than not I'm afraid. So I get it that they need down time. I just wish everyone would take a step back and realize that when they see them and just enjoy from a distance and not go running up for an autograph when they're in the middle of dinner with their family. God I would never do that and I have seen so many people do that over the years it just bugs me.

He did say horse, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'd kind of like it to be an elk simply to tie in with the prologue so that seems less random.

As wicked fools I scorned them, but I pity them at last.

Unsure I WAS HOPING SO BADLY MAN BUT OKAY apart from that there's plenty of footage to ponder over! Laketown and Dale look awesome and the soundtrack played towards the end of the video (similar or same to the one played in the trailer) sounded quite different from what's in the AUJ soundtrack. Really excited for the soundtrack for this movie i bet it'll be off the charts awesome (as usual)!!!! \o/
They had better show Benedict in the next vlog doing performance capture or being interviewed or something anything whatever okay PLS PLS PLS PLS PLSSSS LaughLaughLaugh
