Hmm [In reply to] Can't Post

1) Looks like the orcs attack and this helps the dwarves escape in the barrels. Interesting...

2) Smaug looks a little strange because of the angle, but if you pause it right when he appears before he turns his head, he looks a lot better and resembles what we saw in AUJ

The sad truth [In reply to] Can't Post

While this is a wonderfully humourous section in the book, the many people who moaned that the Bag End sequence in AUJ went on too long would almost certainly hate the introductions at Beorn's house, and complain that it is overlong and unnecessary. I had a feeling it was always going to be a casualty, though it's not impossible the EE of DOS could change the sequence entirely.

OK... [In reply to] Can't Post

So I just rewatched the video on youtube again. I was clicking pause/play very quickly to give me as many new views of the "beast" attacking the party at the cabin.

I just found an angle that makes it look entirely like a bear. I wish I knew how to capture and post a screenshot. It is right as he busts through the door. The head in angled downward, the mouth is wide open, and it looks exactly like a bear.

That attack on Gandalf appears to be by Thrain. [In reply to] Can't Post

If you recall the first movie trailer the scene was in it but then moved to this film.

Something I noticed... [In reply to] Can't Post

If someone has already said this, I'm sorry. I'm in a rush now, trying to say this quickly. I thought it was neat how Smaug's head entered the frame in the trailer nearly the exact way the dragon kite did in the AUJ prologue. They even look very similar. That side view of the jaw, especially.

Taking a couple of hours off of here to do some errands. I'm sure I'll have a lot of catching up to do!!!Smile

Ugh is there ANY hope of him not being in the Battle of the Five Armies?

I don't mind him in DOS but his presence would take away from the Bo5A IMO and I'm dreading it.

Jim? Your #1 is (nearly) the same as the book [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
1) Dwarves and Bard? Traveling up Long Lake towards the Lonely Mountain by boat. So they won't be on foot like in the book.

Thorin and Company does begin their journey from Lake-town to Lonely Mountain by water via Long Lake. Then they continue with the ponies when they debark. The only difference that I can see is that here they are with Bard.

It looks like Tauriel is fated to be the conscience of the Woodland Realm. Now, is she advocating going to the aid of the Dwarves or helping the White Council?

Smaug the Magnificent (as he appears in the teaser) reminds me of the dragons in the Record of Lodoss Wars anime--which isn't a bad thing.

hmm, thatīs a fairly simplified way of looking at it IMO [In reply to] Can't Post

Itīs just as valid and understandable to be disappointed with the teaser-trailer as it is to be very enthusiastic about it.

Personally I wasnīt very impressed with it for two main reasons.

First thing: Itīs not very good at getting the story across.

Second: the action elements it emphasizes seem rather pointless and overdone. For those who disliked similar elements in AUJ the barrel escape/chase doesnīt look particularly encouraging.

Still I try to keep in mind that this is just a collection of small pieces and shots from the film, not the film itself. There were several parts or elements in the trailer that I enjoyed (Thranduil, Bilbo and the butterflies, the quick shot of Mirkwood) but far from as many as I had hoped.

Hey, I didn't know Pixar made this movie! [In reply to] Can't Post

CGI Elves! CGI Orcs! CGI Dwarves in barrels! CGI Thrain & Tauriel leaping at the camera! Hooray!

This is like the anti-LotR. While PJ's previous trilogy created a living, human Middle-earth, this is like cut scenes from "A Bug's Life".

Worse, it looks like "Avatar": it has such an artificial, digital sheen to it, even when there's a real person in the frame it looks like a cartoon.

Oh, yeah: and Bilbo again gets stiffed with not a single line in his OWN trailer; Thorin doesn't speak either. Is this "Woodland Realm: The Movie"?

Why was I expecting PJ to do something better than AUJ with this? And why has everything (including things we KNOW were shot in production, such as the barrels, elves, orcs, ETC) been replaced with CGI?

Ah, well...the wait for the trailer was slightly exciting for a while there, I suppose.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Deviations? Not much Tolkien in the trailer at all.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Let see -

The meeting of the dwarves and Beorn - completely different.
The capture of the dwarves by the elves - completely different.
Thranduil's knowledge of Thorin's identity and destination - completely different
The nature of the escape in barrels - other than the barrels....completely different
Laketown residents reaction to Thorin and Co - appears rather different.
Location of the secret door - appears that it may be different
Gandalf meeting Thrain - seems completely different (at least in terms of timeline)

Then there is the continuation of the whole Azog subplot......the Tauriel aspects.....

Doesn't look to me like a movie that will please the purists.

I doubt Thrain is attacking Gandalf with a key. I think that the way PJ has ordered things clearly deviates from how Tolkien did, regarding Gandalf and Thrain. So far in the movie version Gandalf got the key from Thrain without ever visiting Dol Guldur. So when he finally does get to Dol Guldur and discovers a mad Thrain, it happens after Thorin and company have set off into Mirkwood.

I'm presuming that footage will still be in there in places, but the more dangerous and elaborate stunts will be CGI. At least for the barrel sequence.

We know they shot the barrel escape on location at Pelorus, [In reply to] Can't Post

but the shot of Dwalin in a barrel in the trailer looked remarkably "clean" and didn't feel part of the actual scene to me, as though it had been "touched up"...

Let's face it. the only on location shooting I can think of for DoS was this barrel scene, plus the outside of Beorn's place (the inside is a studio set, I think, like Rhosgobel?) - oh, and the ruined Dale set. Laketown is on a studio lot. The vast majority of scenes for this film will have been produced on a computer!.

My feeling: Radagast will die at Dol Guldur [In reply to] Can't Post

After seeing the trailer and looking at Raddy:

I dont now why but i felt immediatly that he wont survive the attack on the old fortress. He looks so hurtable, innocent and so full of fear. Call me stupid after just seeing such a short scene, but that was my first impression.

Btw, Dol Guldur looks awesome.

Where is the Hobbit? [In reply to] Can't Post

Initial reaction after seeing it for the first time:

Disappointment beyond belief.

Nothing, i feel nothing.

Hardly recognise Tolkiens work amongst all the popcorn crap.

JTarkey wrote : " As an action movie that I expect nothing out of other than sugary CGI spectacle, it looks alright. As an adaptation of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, it is ludicrous beyond reason"

My first impression is that it is some generic, epic, action blockbuster. Wheres Bilbo? Why focus on the elves, the darkness, the trap, the dozens of slashings, and cuttings and action shots? Again, wheres BIlbo?

This doenst feel like J RR Tolkiens The Hobbit at all. That one had magic and a wonderfull fairytale quality...The first trailer, successfully established the character of Bilbo, the stakes, the quest, etc... with some subtlety and elegance...

This is just cgi cgi shots and action and action...

And is this a story focused on the Elves of Mirkwood? Tauriel, tauriel, legolas, Azog, Radagast...where is the hobbit?

Is this music from the movie? Because if it is, its disappointing. There s no magic, no sparkle, in it. Felt more like some generic trailer music. And that also destroys the feeling of being in ME.

This resembles more the second trailer than the first auj teaser.Unsure

Better go watch it again...

Oh and Sxxxxxmaug....is this for real? He looks like a cartoon dragon?Crazy

I suppose they are still working on him, but one shot, just one good shot we got...and , is it just me, or does he remind you people of a cartoon dragon rather than a real worm?

Thranduil's Line... [In reply to] Can't Post

My favourite line in the trailer was definitely Thranduil's - "Such is the nature of evil, in time all foul things come forth". Brilliantly delivered by Lee Pace too.

In regards to Smaug, I think it would have worked better if the final shot only went up to Smaug's snout coming round the corner. Not only would this have added more suspense as to the reveal of the dragon but it would have given more time to firm up the CGI which in my opinion, was not particularly great.
