its true, thelotr trilogy seems so much more grown up compared to the way the hobbit trilogy feels, which sort of works.
good stuff is epic, the now dubious stuff is making me cringe, but im optimistic.
weta seem to do landscapes,places etc brilliantly but when it comes to digital doubles its just too obvious, for evey cgi shot of an elf i cant help thinking a stuntman could have done that.(cgi legolas and tree elves took me out of the trailer, computer game much?)
smaug - im worried, but cant judge yet.
its odd it feels like more of a kids trilogy but the wizards storyline is stillconfusing even me.
everything else brilliant
will smaug die, not so sure, not much story left after that just politics then a big battle.

head is being deliberately shown this way (dark and shadowed) to avoid too much detail. Be assured the full detailed Smaug is going to be spectacular...this was nothing more than a teaser...

Astounding visuals, even for this franchise; I think they're going to outdo themselves this time.
The ruins of Dale from a distance looked very Tibet-esque.
Thranduil continues to be captivating. Balin? Still love him.
Surprisingly much of Smaug. I can't say I expected to see that much of him. On the flipside, surprisingly little of Beorn. Expected more of him.
Echoing what Kullervo said: A great mixture of gloom and cheer, a fairytale about to turn dark.
The mystery surrounding Thráin thickens. It appears that, when Gandalf now runs into Thráin, he is carrying Glamdring, so when did Gandalf get the key?
My only two pet-peeves: The barrel-ride being turned into a fight-sequence, and the dwarves seemingly being chased to Beorn's house (taking away the lovely introduction to Beorn).

I think it appears to be an animated kids film.
Why does all the action scenes have to be larger than life? barrels bouncing around drawves figgthing, bilbo falling thrrough alooot of trees.
so much for the darker middle chapter, this looks more goofy than ever.
Not saying it looks bad. but sure its such a big gap between this and lotr.
Tranduil glorious as ever!
If PJ wanted to blow me away with that smaug he failed. They should have kept him hidden till we can see him for real. He looks like a puppet in this trailer. hope he's better in real movie.

- To me Thranduil is what stood out of the trailer to me. He looks ridiculously amazing  I LOVE the voice over and Mirkwood.
- Legolas however all over looks really CGI. A lot of CGI in the trailer, but Legolas in particular almost looked all CGI like Azog.
- I think Azog might grow on me. I didnt like him first as he looks kinda unfinished, but at the same time. HUGE! I love that.
- Erebor, Mirkwood, Lake Town, Barrels out of Bond. Looks great.
I do agree with the broken record that is too muc CGI though. I wont like this movie in 3D either. I hated seeing AUJ in 3D, but I think I'll like it better in 2D.
I just wished the could focus more on the story than the CGI because how many reviews from AUJ doesn't talk mainly about the CGI?

I loved Thranduil, and the design of his Halls, Bilbo and the butterflies and the aerial shot of Laketown even though I'm still not enthused over the CGI - that very first shot of the boat on the lake looks so obviously fake....as did one of Legolas's appearances where it was very obvious he turned from CGI character into real actor. I guess it does make the Elves' agility appear even more supernatural, particularly where they are scampering through the tree branches....
First glimpse of Beorn - but looks like some serious changes to the storyline there if they are shutting the door on him!!!
I'm reserving judgement on Smaug, though I can't say I'm blown away yet...
I will say there was far too much Tauriel and Legolas in this trailer!
I'm still confused over the Thrain sequence - I take it that this is a separate visit to DG to the clip we saw of Gandalf with Radagast? He appears to only have his staff when he is having a skirmish with the presumed Thrain. But who is the creature that jumps down on him from above, where he is holding both sword and staff???
And why the heck were the Dwarves climbing up one of the statues? is that really where the secret door is located? Why is there this inherent need of Jackson's to make everything epic to the nth degree???
Questions....questions....

Observations about trailer....
1) Dwarves and Bard? Traveling up Long Lake towards the Lonely Mountain by boat. So they won't be on foot like in the book.
2) Dwarves climbing the big statue, have they changed the location of the secret door?
3) Dale during winter, chilling!
4) Thranduil's halls, looks great, reminds me very much like an underground Lothlorien!
5) Thranduil/Thorin - I think Lee Pace is going to be one of the outstanding actors in this movie!
6) Dwarves escaping in the barrels - Not being released into the water one by one like in the book.
7) Bilbo climbing to the top of the tree in Mirkwood and seeing the butterflies
8) Barrels in a Bond scene going down the Forest River - elves in pursuit and lids are off, deviation from the book here
9) Company walking through Mirkwood
10) Legolas meeting the dwarves in Mirkwood just after the encounter with the Spiders - Looks like they will get rid of the lights go out scene from the book where the Elves are toying with the Dwarves.
11) Dwarves holding the door back against Beorn - So it appears the company arrive at his residence while he is gone and the whole introduction of meeting him is gone.
12) Tauriel - Looking good, had apprehensions but doesn't feel out of place.
13) Laketown - Looks great!
14) Bilbo in Smaug's lair, sliding down the coins.
15) Gandalf/Radagast in Dol Guldur - "What if it is a trap?" I think during this movie we will only see the White Council confirm Sauron's presence, I think the battle will be left for the final movie.
16) More shots of Legolas/Thranduil in the halls.
17) Gandalf in the High fells discovering the Ringwraiths have escaped their tombs
18) Azog will be in the second movie - looks like he's attacking elves but where its hard to tell
19) Bilbo hiding from a Spider in Mirkwood
20) Thorin opening the secret door
21) Bard/Thorin in Laketown - Bard having a more active role in the movie compared to the book.
22) Gandalf fighting Thrain in Dol Guldur
23) Legolas and Tauriel fighting Orcs
24) Bilbo in the water
25) Legolas/Tauriel attacking orcs again, it appears while the Elves are trying to stop the Dwarves from escaping they get ambushed by Azog/Orcs.
26) Gandalf getting attacked by Thrain
27) Bilbo falling from a tree in Mirkwood
28) Thorin in the barrel
29) Dwarves outside the secret door, Balin stating the presence of the Dragon to Bilbo.

The trailer seems bent on getting in as many different pieces as possible without really making any good connections between them. The music was terrible, even worse than what you usually get in these kind of trailers. In my opinion the trailer wasn´t particularly good at getting the story across to the general audience.
At the same time I keep in mind that the final result of AUJ felt so different from the impressions left by the second trailer, so I expect that the same will apply to DoS.
I also noticed the snow in Dale and Erebor. Visually it was quite striking, even beautiful, but it didn´t seem like a good move if they wanted to stress how Smaug had affected his surroundings. I think it would have been more effective story-wise to go for a more barren, late autumn look.
I liked the look and colours of AUJ very much, but this trailer felt too much CGI and the contrasts overdone.
On the positive side Bilbo looking out from the tree-tops in Mirkwood was wonderful; it really made me look forward to this part of the film!

Of course there are deviations from the book, and frankly, I don't mind if they make sense in the movie which is PJ's adaptation. The movie has the essential elements plus additions that make a movie more compelling for a larger audience. They have to add to the plot and motivations of the various players in the film. I reserve judgement until I have seen the movie and if the changes work great! I tend to fall in the "more Middle Earth" is better camp (if done well and within believability of the world - much was left and unsaid and this is where the gaps are filled).

This was an awesome trailer! I had high expectations, and this surpassed it.
Here are some of my observations:
- Where is that shot of the city in the mountain suppose to be? (0:14)
Noted Thrandruil mentioned at the beginning how Thorin is seeking that which gives him the right to rule (Arkenstone?) Is this a change from the book's idea that Thorin is stubborn due to his greed for gold? I think seeking the right to rule will make audience more sympathetic to Thorin, and maybe Thrandruil is jealous of having to respect the dwarven kingdom again (hence his obstruction)?
Interesting to see the elves chase after the dwarves in the barrel scene. I believe in the book the dwarves just make a clean getaway?
Wow, Mirkwood looks amazing; just like that illustration Peter showed in his preview 2 months ago.
Beorn the Bear at 0:40!
Interesting conversation between Legolas and Tauriel at 0:42. Got the whole theme of fighting evil vs staying out of others business theme we saw in Return of the King with King Theoden and Aragorn. Seems like Legolas first starts off as someone who hates dwarves as well (probably stubborn and loyal to the Elves ways). This will give his character more development, as we know he grows to love dwarves by the end of Return of the King. Theme of growth, openess, and acceptance will be in play here for Legolas.
It does not seem like the Dol Guldur story will advance too far here other than Gandalf learning more about the evil that is growing there. I suspect Gandalf will be captured by the Necromencer, while Radagast will escape and warn the Council. This will be one of the main cliffhangers going into the last movie. I wonder who attacks Gandalf at shot 1:26? Bolg?
The shot of Azog and his orcs fighting the elves seem to be the same time as the barrel chase. Did the orcs interrupt the elves chasing the dwarves? Or are the Elves protecting the Dwarves from the orcs (unlikely)?
Surprised they actually showed that much of Smaug. Wow, what a giant beast!
