Bifur's strange language [In reply to] Can't Post

It's so funny

Also Dori's "Mister Gandalf"

There are MANY of those little moments I love

i don't know [In reply to] Can't Post

I like Thranduil on his moose and the two elvish soldiers at his side during the prologue.
It's not like Thranduil's portrayal is apathetic to the tumult below. He has an air of
collected equanimity and cool calculation that prevents any ire or misplaced
emotional impetus from defeating his purposes. I like how he expresses
regrettable serenity in leaving the unfortunate to their untenable demise. I also
like those two elvish soldiers. i don't know if they're real or cg, but their allegiance
to Thranduil's 'whims' is ablsolute and beyond reproach. Thranduil turns around, and they just
follow his lead in their expressions or lack thereof lol.

I think Gandalf's reaction as Bilbo declines his offer and exits the scene. He disposed
of his entire arsenal of persuasion to no avail, and it almost sickens him to see Bilbo
simply decline and walk away from this grand proposition after all his reassuring cajoling.

I think Elrond deserves a reward for this film. He handles his role nicely and a presents a different
side of his circumstancial nature. I like his expression getting off the horse when addressing Mithrandir. It's
a nice change of pace to the character. One might expect the perpetually grave and dignified Elrond from lotr,
but he is simply lighter here and is a nice changeup. Plus, the deliverance of his lines is to his credit as some
of the stuff written for him is borderline cornyLaugh He was a real soldier delivering those lines as natural and
unintrusively as possible. I also like his expression when he receives the Erebor map and Gandalf assures him
that the exegesis of its secrets is merely academic....yaaaa riiiiight....

I like Balin's strut and expression in the map scene as well. Thorin's capitulation to Gandalf's exhortations demonstrates
the severity of his commitment to Erebor and the fate of his people. Bilbo's reaction throughout is a nice touch as an outside
observer almost in quiet disbelief at the stubborness and mistrust the Dwarves exhibit toward an otherwise overtly
decent, reassuring, trustworthy, wise elf such as Elrond.

I also like Bilbo's expressions as he hands the signed contract to Bilbo. He glances at Gandalf.
I think in many ways, Gandalf is the reason he embarks on the journey. Mithrandir may have rekindled
that adventurous wonder, but I am not sure the Bilbo really knows it himself. He takes a leap of faith in what
Gandalf tells is within him and the merits of the adventure. He doesn't believe or remember it fully, but Gandalf does
so he'll trust the wizards pretensions for now.

Gandalf growling at a petrified troll after he rescues the dwarfs [In reply to] Can't Post

And then giving it a sound rap with his staff. Gandy the Grey is so much more personable than the White. I really feel like Ian M. Is having a blast playing him.

love him rapping the stone troll with his staff, and the sound it makes.

btw, ian mckellan has indeed said that it's more fun to play gandalf the gray, than gandalf the white.

cheers --

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

How about when Elrond asks the dwarfs in Elfish if they would like to relax [In reply to] Can't Post

and have something to eat. As the dwarfs react as if insulted, the slightest smile comes onto Elrond's face, and if he were purposely pushing their buttons and knew how they would react.

Bifur in Rivendell and other "small" moments [In reply to] Can't Post

When the Dwarves reach Rivendell, Bifur is excited and moves ahead of the others to look at the Valley; he seems to be nodding his head appreciatively. When Elrond and the Elven-riders come in and circle around, Bifur watches but doesn't react until Bombur pulls him into the circle. After Gandalf tells the Dwarves that Elrond is offering them food, Bifur explains it to Bofur with his hands, pantomiming eating and nodding his head in approval. Bifur seems to be the only Dwarf that has no problem being around Elves, as well as no regrets about breaking furniture to fuel their campfire! We'll see if that changes when they are captured by Thranduil and gang.

Another little bit I enjoy is at the end of the Troll scene, when one of the Trolls (Bert?) says "this little ferret is taking us for fools!". Bilbo says "ferret?" and Bill(?) says "fools?". (I get Bert and Bill mixed up:)

And in the fight with the Trolls, perhaps Dori is showing off his skill as the strongest when he gives one of the Trolls a blow from behind (between the Troll's legs, ahem), bringing the Troll to its knees--whereupon Dwalin smacks the Troll in the mouth with his mallet or whatever, breaking a few of the Troll's teeth in the process.

'"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb.'

A couple of moments [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's a few:

Dori saying "Give us a number" to Gandalf about how many dragons he's supposed to have killed - like a stroppy Union rep trying to pin down a slippery management during pay negotiations.

When Thorin scolds Fili and Kili about the Orcs joke, Kili is really upset, but Fili just has this philosophical look, like "Ok, fair enough, we asked for that."

The Dori-Nori-Ori family dynamic over the belching during the party - I get the feeling that this (and table-manners in general) is a long-running issue in the "Ri" household.

Oin stuffing his napkin into his ear-trumpet to block out the sound of the Elf-lady's flute-playing.

The way all the Elf musicians seem to be playing in a slightly affected way - are they deliberately doing it to annoy the Dwarves or are they just being themselves and we're seeing them as they appear to the Dwarves?

Thorin saying "You could have got yourself killed" to Bilbo (before the hug) - that always cracks me up - talk about the pot calling the kettle!

Few more faves from first half of film... [In reply to] Can't Post

Bag End: Fili walking on table, Kili reaches out and swats his leg. (What--he didn't wipe his boots first?)

Right after bebother and confustigate : Gandalf enters hallway and Martin Freeman Bilbo does a look up and around similar to scene in FotR--in Bag End (after party) when Gandalf is standing by fire and says, "I suppose you found that terribly clever" and Ian Holm Bilbo looks up and around. (Think that's an homage? Will send to Gramma and ask.)

In hallway during song: Galdalf blows a great smoke ring but Fili's tossed dishes obliterate it and Galdalf laughs.

When Bilbo faints, Dwalin stands up in alarm.

In the orcs/throat cutters tease, Thorin (screen right) starts awake when he hears the word "Orc," then, as Fili and Kili go on, he visibly makes an eye roll motion, as if to say "for crying out loud" and now he's annoyed,

Battle at Moria flashback: Mohawk Dwalin and young Balin touching (not banging) foreheads after the battle...wonder if we'll see them do this again post bofa? (Though not really background as it's the focus of the shot.)

As Radagast pulls in after troll hoard, Fili (behind Bilbo) has a great wtf??? look on his face.

Rivendell, Dwalin checks his salad and says, "Where's the meat?" He isn't wearing his knuckle-busters (his version of dressed for dinner?)

(Side note: I'll round up the comments on this thread and send any not on Gramma's list over to her.)

Hmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe Doris' reaction when he & Ori land on the eagle. His face, so priceless!Sly

Or when the dwarves start to join Thorin on the Misty Mountains song, how they stand up as if singing an anthem.

I definitely love when Radagast smiles at Sebastion as the giant spiders nearly cave in his roof.Evil

But never Bofurs' expression when Bilbo said that "Never belonging anywhere!" bit. The way his face fell! That's the only time in my life I can remember, that I wanted to drop-kick a hobbit! Kidding, maybe.Crazy

Oh my so many mentioned already! [In reply to] Can't Post

But in case anyone didn't mention these:
- Thorin's body language as he sits on his horse when Bilbo says they have to go back because he forgot his handkerchief clearly states an "Oh for crying out loud" moment for him.
- I love the way Bofur pulls Bilbo into the center of the dwarves' circle in order to shield him when Elrond and his men are arriving.
- Bifur's strange hand motions during the shouting scene when the dwarves are arguing about how many dragons Gandalf has killed.
- Thorin's shout of "Traitor!" when Bilbo tells the trolls they don't know how to cook a dwarf.
- Balin's absolutely spectacular sword play at one point during their escape from the Goblins.
- Thorin's nod at Elrond when Elrond says of Orcrist, "May it serve you well."
- The little hand thing Bilbo does as Dwalin and Balin throw the blue cheese out of the pantry and how he follows it with his eyes.
- The way Nori gives Dori (I think it was Dori) a hand up as they step up on the Carrock to go see what Thorin is looking at.
- The way Dwalin allows his body to be used as a stepping stone twice: once in the troll scene where Thorin uses his back to jump up to whack the troll and again during the last fight with the wargs when..I think it's Nori...uses Dwalin's head to jump up into a tree.
- The way Thorin slaps the contract into Bilbo without even looking at him when he's sitting at the table at Bag End.
- Radagast's little smile after he saves his hedgehog.
