I think you're right [In reply to] Can't Post

about the strike and Philippa/Fran/Jackson doing the screenplay. I think they've already gleaned LOTS of stuff when doing LotR just for this... fully intending to make The Hobbit sometime in the future. I also don't think any writer's strike can stop someone from doodling or jotting down notes ;)

This is so thrilling!!!! *reaches for oxygen*

Excited beyond belief [In reply to] Can't Post

Though I believe he will direct it in a unique role as a producer/director. There is no way PJ can do all of this by himself just like in the film trilogy, there were multiple sets and locations with their own directors with PJ videoconferencing. I'm ecstatic that New Line has come back to reality and forever thankful to the valiant efforts of Mr. Sloan from MGM. If it had not been for his efforts along with Saul Zaentz' support, we would not have been brought this wonderful news. It was during the most darkest hours that Mr. Sloan pulled this through and when all hope was lost he kept saying or alluding to that it will be done and PJ will be involved directly. Now everybody needs to support MGM and thank New Line for coming to its senses. Yes Frodo, there is a Santa Claus!!! Smile

Crazy No sillies. PJ is master. We do what master tells us. After following along with the unabridged version and the BBC dramatized version of the LoTR with the books themselves. I have to say PJ has done a job worthy of great praise to this very day given the limitations of film and people's patience for sitting through lengthy films. It is a masterpiece born from the greatest book of fiction ever created. PJ loves Tolkien's work in order to butcher it. I believe that love is shared by Fran and Philipa as well. That passion is rarely shared by directors and producers alike.

Create More Tolkien? [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I have the feeling they (Philippa/Fran/Peter) are going to try and do something very creative and satisfying with that second film. This is THEIR chance to create more Tolkien and finish what I'm sure the Good Professor would have done if he'd had more time.

Actually, Tolkien had plenty of time to write those stories (over 35 years, I believe), and he chose not to. I'm offended by the idea of someone with clout and deep pockets thinking that their resources give them the right to turn their fanfic into a huge studio film, and that it'll somehow "become" Tolkien. It won't. It'll be their adaptation of Tolkien's work, and will never be anything more. Considering the extreme liberties PJ & Co. took with Tolkien's well-written text for LOTR, I shudder to think how many more liberties they would take with the sketchy information in the appendices.

but why not [In reply to] Can't Post

i don't understand this feeling of offense or resentment if people wanna go off on their own Tolkien tangents.
Yeah, they have clout and deep pockets...so? every fanfic writer wishes they had the same.

the tolkien world and stories they come up with may not be the world tolkien would have envisioned or what other readers think is right, but i say let the creativity flow. It's not taking away from anyone else's right or vision.

besides, it gives others something to gripe about then..which is more satisfying than if no one does anything new with tolkien's stories ever.

I don't know that Tolkien "chose not to" write more [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, he did deliberately leave off writing a sequel to LotR, but he started it. And look at all the "unfinished tales" he left behind. When I read Tolkien and the Silmarillion by Clyde Kilby I was struck by the pathetic (and I mean that in the nicest way) unorganized mess that Kilby described Tolkien's notes to be in. Tolkien wanted Kilby to help him, but couldn't even get things together enough to even give Kilby something to work on. Think of "Leaf By Niggle". Tolkien had reams of material floating around but just couldn't nail it down because of other demands on his time and lack of focus. He loved his elves and he loved writing about hobbits too. Given infinite time he surely would have written and finished more stories.

Where's Frodo?

Just don't call it "Tolkien" [In reply to] Can't Post

It may be based on Tolkien's work, but it isn't his work. That's the distinction.

I got so tired of people saying, "I saw the movies, so I don't have to read the books." Given how much the movies deviated from the books in many places, that's just wrong. I know that lots of people were inspired to read the books because of the movies, and that's fantastic, but what about the folks who now have the entirely wrong idea about the characters in the books because of how they were portrayed in the movies? I love the books, and the characters, too much to see them shortchanged like this.

And for a "bridge" movie to be called Tolkien's work would be wrong in so many ways. They should say it's "inspired by" his work, but not claim it to be directly his, or an adaptation of his work. What I suspect is that people would see that movie and be sure they know what Tolkien wrote, or what he intended his characters to do, etc., when that would be about 180 degrees from the truth.

All that stuff PJ threw in about Aragorn not wanting the throne, his fear of inheriting weakness, etc.? That directly conflicts with what we know of him through the appendices -- how he fought valiantly for Rohan and Gondor, how he spent years protecting people everywhere, how he even went into Mordor and into Moria seeking out the dark things living there. Doesn't sound like a coward to me, or like someone who's trying to hide from the throne. Nope. Sounds to me like someone who's learning everything he needs to know, someone who's testing his bravery, putting himself on the line, getting to know the people he'd be ruling, and most of all, protecting them all. He showed valor in his actions, remember? Denethor's dad admired him above Denethor, or crying out loud. So, how would PJ reconcile this version of Aragorn with the sniveling coward he put in his movies? I can't see it. And if PJ & Co. write the "bridge" movie, they would somehow find a way to do that, and betray Tolkien's very characterization of Aragorn even further. That would not be Tolkien's work, but an adaptation. Yet moviegoers who can't be bothered to read the books would think it's what Tolkien wrote. That bothers me. And I'm allowed to be bothered by it.

Clarification... [In reply to] Can't Post

... from the Lidless Eye:

Quote
The 'lending their name' line came from me and is what I had assumed reading between the lines of our conversation. I have been 'asked' to point out that this is not true (and apologies for the error),

Both PJ and Fran Walsh will take far more power as exec producers, and will have "the same influence as Steven Speilberg would have as executive producer" on a movie - in other words "they will be the main creative force behind the project - you'll know that this is a Peter Jackson movie".

She would not rule out PJ directing and or writing / supervising, but then again everything is up for grabs. They only signed last week.

Well.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Are there moments where Jackson & co. improved on the books by not showing something? By which I mean not those things that one may guess to have happened (as some viewers propose that the hobbits visited Tom Bombadil between the Ferry and Bree, though there is not one indication of that onscreen) but something that clearly happened both in the book and on screen, but is presented directly in the book and elided on film?

Well, there's the courtship of Eowyn and Faramir, because there they are standing together at the coronation, on-screen, so obviously something happened off-screen over and beyond the hint we get in the RotK-EE. Leaving this out doesn't improve on the book, though. All it does is make the movie move along faster.

Is this what you mean?

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Bit late on the uptake here, I've only just found out. Extremely pleased would be an understatement.

Bit worried about who's going to direct, though. The Hobbit films have to have the same feel as the LOTR films, there's got to be some sense of connection between them, otherwise for me it would spoil the experience. Getting Shore to compose would be a great help for a start.

Oh happy days!!!
