"and Tolkien's other works" [In reply to] Can't Post

Which Boyens, Walsh, and Jackson can't touch.

Quote
This is THEIR chance to create more Tolkien and finish what I'm sure the Good Professor would have done if he'd had more time.

Maybe they'll option some of the better fanfiction? "Chance Meeting in Rivendell"? But of course they can't do that, exactly --it wouldn't be fanfiction if people were paid for it (perhaps the boards' resident expert on the subject could weigh in)-- though there probably are ways around the legalities. Aunt Dora as consultant?

there has been settlement ... this case is still underway with dates set etc ...

Nothing much has been said about the 'seetlement' ... so it is a wonder (wonderful Wink), "How did it come to this?" ....

That will possibly be the next big story surrounding this maybe ...

I cant wait for this to take off!!

What a wicked Christmas present for us all!

Did anyone else notice the comment from PJ that he thanks his 'new friends' at New Line? Talk about a kick in the ankle to Shay! But I'm glad that the people involved decided to be grown-ups about this and get this film under way at last!

I also noticed there was no mention of New Zealand being the film location. That's an interesting omission at a time when they can conclusively say there will be two films, their production timeline and the release dates.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I just hope Peter directs, but even if he doesn't, I can live with executive producer.

He'll have a lot of control that way.

Isn't it unreal!
Tears of joy and relief and anticipation maybe?

New Zealand is Middle-earth ... maybe its just not announced as it seems such an excepted fact ... I cant imagine the bulk of the film being made anywhere else, not with the amount of new studios and production facilities availble now - world class!!

No doubt this will make the TV news tonight!!

Audit rights ... [In reply to] Can't Post

The sticking point of the lawsuit, though, was that he already had audit rights in his original LOTR contract with NL ... and he invoked that right ... but they simiply said no. That's why he sued them in the first place.

What's interesting to note is that this lawsuit was only about FOTR profits. As I understand it, he would still have the ability to sue NL if they don't open the books and let him see the figures on TTT and ROTK.

But I expect PJ wouldn't have signed on for this new adventure unless there's been a committment from NL to at least attempt some financial transparency!

I am so excited about this! The Hobbit being made, and PJ being involved! What about music? I hope Howard Shore composes! And I hope they have the same director of Photography, and Weta Workshop and Digital had better be involved!
I can't wait for all the movie updates, so exciting! I hope they do web video blogs! I wonder when this will hit the news?

Exactly. [In reply to] Can't Post

I had gotten the impression that PJ's lawsuit was at least partly to convince New Line that they couldn't be shady (to anyone, not just PJ) -- that they need to comply with valid audit requests and not try to hide stuff.

If the settlement does require New Line to be more forthcoming with information, that's great. I really hope they didn't just offer higher and higher figures until PJ said yes, because I thought it wasn't just about the money.

Gee, I'd love to be able to read some of these agreements, not even to be nosy but just for my own education about how these things work. I understand why they want to keep things confidential, but it's frustrating to be on the outside wondering what's going on.

Well, well, well [In reply to] Can't Post

What fun to see the boards so busy!

I'm glad to hear that The Hobbit is underway, although oddly enough, since l love the LotR movie(s), my second reaction (after the big grin and the fist in the air) is caution.

1) This is The Hobbit, not LotR. While I like The Hobbit just fine, it's not LotR. They've done the (excuse me) "good one" already.

2) PJ does have a tendency to excess, exacerbated by the success of LotR. I hope he's able to rein in his worse impulses -- or that Walsh and Boyens will.

3) If I understand it correctly, the second movie is a "bridge" between The Hobbit and LotR, and will be created almost out of whole cloth. Call me cynical, but this is a bit too close to a hubristic milking-the-franchise decision for me to be entirely comfortable with it.

Other than that:

Squeeeeee!
