Agreed ... [In reply to] Can't Post

It would be ideal if he had nothing else in the hopper. But in shooting three of the biggest and most complicated films ever made at the same time ... I think PJ has certainly proven that he can multi-task!

And I think, having been through this once already, the whole crew will be better prepared for the rigors of this kind of production. They know exactly what to expect and will be able to prepare better for it this time. Since they know what's coming, they'll be able to better manage resources and time.

What work by Boyens, Jackson and/or Jackson... [In reply to] Can't Post

might make for the best comparison with the "linear storyline" of The Hobbit? Should we be thinking more of King Kong and Heavenly Creatures than LotR?

And what about this second "sequel" film, which requires creation almost ex nihilo? Will it take longer to adapt a somewhat dialogue-ready, straightforward novel, or to expand tremendously on scraps from Appendix A to LotR?

Fersher! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hobbiton is still there, they just need to redo the facades and replace the plants! I remember hearing something about Alan Lee working on some things hobbity-related shortly after the eedvds for RotK came out.

Yeah... they've been hanging onto all the mugs and costumes and computer work just waiting for this to finally get sorted out!

The only problem is that they'll have to film Bag End in Peter's back yard where he's got the set ;)

In a way I'm disappointed [In reply to] Can't Post

in the fact that Peter settled. Does this mean that New Line didn't have to open their books after all? Because that means they're probably paying him less than what they owe him (even if it's a huge amount), and no doubt underpaying many other people too.

I was really hoping the lawsuit would go all the way to a decision by a judge or jury, just to put New Line in their place and hopefully make them less likely to rip people off in the future. Now they'll think it's OK to keep underpaying people.

So I'm *very* happy as a fan that it looks like these movies will get made, but it sickens me to think that all of the money we put into ticket sales and merchandise and so forth might not go to the people who really earned it.

Certainly *major* news in any case. I just tried to submit it to Slashdot and saw that Corvar beat me too it. Duh, I should've guessed he'd already done that. Tongue

Two movies?? :( [In reply to] Can't Post

AHHHH, FINALLY AN ANNOUNCMENT!!!

"The Hobbit: There" in 2010
"The Hobbit: Back Again" in 2011

Unless they are doing The Hobbit, followed by another story that is a LotR prequel. I guess I would hate it less if they did The Hobbit as one movie, and then did a sequel. Then, I have the option of pretending that the sequel doesn't exist.

But I am really uncomfortable with this whole two-movie thing! One three-hour Hobbit film would be perfectly sufficient!

I'm trying to be optimistic, because Peter Jackson has sure earned that. But I have a bad feeling about this right now.

Poor Tom.

Actually, [In reply to] Can't Post

I see each of the story lines from LotR as being treated as linear. Frodo and Sam's moved forward on course, as did the Hunters. I'd say what we witness with The Lovely Bones will be very reassuring along with what we've seen with KK and HC.

There's so much information in the back stories, appendices, introductions and Tolkien's other works, I think it'll be easy for them to create the bridge. I have the feeling they (Philippa/Fran/Peter) are going to try and do something very creative and satisfying with that second film. This is THEIR chance to create more Tolkien and finish what I'm sure the Good Professor would have done if he'd had more time.

I just feel like Tolkien's stories are in such safe hands with them. More than anyone else I can think of, anyway. They deserve this opportunity to finish the job. I'm so happy for them :D

The Reading Room will probably discuss "The Hobbit" again... [In reply to] Can't Post

in March 2009, after the current discussion of The Lord of the Rings concludes. It only takes about four months to discuss The Hobbit, though, so maybe the participants will opt to discuss something else first, to push the discussion closer to the film's appearance. Or maybe it would be possible to work up a discussion of the various LotR errata on which Jackson and co. will draw to create the second film.

I can live with Peter Jackson as the producer. [In reply to] Can't Post

That means someone else will direct.

But I'm not happy about two films. That gives them too much scope to make up their own stuff and add it to the story. And that's the biggest part of what's wrong with the LOTR movies.

So I will follow this news with the same reserve as I did when LOTR was being made.

Oh Moon, lovely moon, with thy beautiful face,
Careering throughout the boundaries of space,
Whenever I see thee, I think in my mind,
Shall I ever, oh ever, behold thy behind.

Questions that need answering. [In reply to] Can't Post

Who's writing the script? (Please, for the love of jeebus, let it be Boyens, Jackson and Walsh).

Who's directing?

Is Ian McKellen playing Gandalf? (I won't even see it unless he is)

It is very encouraging to me that they are breaking this story into two movies. There are a ton of characters we need to be familiarized with, and a single, two hour movie wouldn't cut it.

Well, we don't know the specifics of the settlement yet. [In reply to] Can't Post

I've long had a hunch that PJ would end up accepting a chunk of cash for LOTR, but in return would get the right to an independent audit in case of any dispute over the Hobbit financials. (Well, we will see whether he gained anything in the end.)
