From the DoS sneak peek, is anyone else excited at the prospect of seeing our characters plodding through snow? Not to mention the possibility of a slightly snow-covered Lake-Town?
It somehow adds more to the feel of the film - especially snow and fire combined  ... or is it just me?
The only scene I can recall from The Lord of the Rings trilogy which had any snow present (the Caradhras sequence doesn't really count - it's a mountain after all), was the Midgewater marshes with Aragorn and the hobbits.
Just seeing Bard and the Dwarves amidst a gentle snow fall looked brilliant!

I hope the BoFA ends up being in the snow as well!
We've seen battles in dusty plains (Last Alliance), rain (Helm's deep), brooding clouds/sunshine (Siege of Minas Tirith/Pelennor Fields) - so I guess BoFA would make for a spectacular snowstorm battle ... I honestly can't wait!

A combination of a giant dragon breathing fire in a snowy enviroment sounds great. And I'd love to see the battle of five armies in snow also. It would help separate it visually from other battles we've seen in LoTR, and thematically I think it would be quite beautiful if (SPOILERS!) we'd see the winter turning to spring with Thorin's death, if the snow would retreat and green grass and flowers would start to bloom in an area once desolated by Smaug, and the land would be awaken back to life during the funeral of the king.

how will they handle the visuals of blood, if they're not opting to even bloody the swords (so far)?
a snow battle would mean lots of crimson (and black) snow.
speaking of orc blood, it always grosses me out in the two towers when gimli tastes the leaf to find out of it's orc blood. it seems to me he suspects, so why not just smell it? orc blood must taste pretty foul.

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."
this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

That would be pretty darn cool to see the desolation being healed as spring sets in. Obviously, I hope it's a little more subtle than the ending of The Lion King, for example, lol.

But I guess they could just simply leave the blood out, or have a very minimal amount of it. I really hope they don't, but I guess they might just to get a PG-13 rating. Altough I don't remember the battles in LoTR being that bloody either. But you might be right, the snow might make even the smalles amount of blood too much for the people who decide the MPAA rating. Personally I think 13 year olds can handle blood and it is not necesserily a bad thing for them to also see the horryfying consequenses of violence. There's two ways of turning violence into fun: using no blood (that's what they seemed to do in AUJ) and using excessive amounts of it. I have nothing against having fun with violence in movies, but of course in the battle of the five armies the violence should not be fun. It should be horrifying.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd love to see snow falling when Smaug attacks Laketown. The juxtaposition of dragon-fire with snow would be brilliant. Even Nature has her own subtle ways of counteracting Evil. Ice quells fire. Goosebumps.
I would really love to see snow falling, or at least on the ground, during the Bo5A. Maybe on the ground during the battle, and falling during and after the One Scene We're (Mostly) All Dreading. The serenity of falling snow has always captivated me. It's peaceful, tranquil, calming, and hides all the irregularities -- the imperfections, scars, wounds -- of the ground it covers. It heals, in a sense. It would be a beautiful touch to have snow falling while Thorin and Bilbo have their final moments together; the falling snow would begin to mask and hide the horrors of the battlefield, as Bilbo walks away and has to start his own healing process.
On the other hand, a swirling snowstorm, tending towards blizzard-ness, could add an amazing sense of danger and urgency to the Bo5A. Epic, indeed! Not something we usually see in battles. Whether swirling in a storm or falling gently, snow would add a depth to the battle that we haven't seen in any of the LOTR battle scenes. I sure hope we see snow!

The body covered in snow behind Dwalin grabbed my attention. That must have been someone who died in Smaug's attack. The position of the body reminds me of the body-casts found in the ash of Mt Vesuvius's most famous eruption: a person perhaps who had time only to cower, not run. There's a skull behind that body too. Will we see many skeletons and corpses in Dale? Hadn't thought of this before, but I suppose we ought to. Chilling.
Dwalin looks like he's about to head-butt Bifur. Wonder why, here.

This thread makes me laugh. Snow is not exotic or romantic in Canada.
Sure it would look cool to see the battle at Laketown etc. in the swirling snow, but real snow more than a few inches deep is slippery as well as difficult and dangerous to move in and also stinging cold. I gather from the FotR commentary that the fake snow they used on Caradhras was hell to work in too.
When I look outside my house today, I see a lawn still mostly covered with a good foot of snow. Though I do like our snowy winter, by this time of year I (and every other Canadian I imagine except skiers) am sick of the stuff. I would think that a lot of Brits and Europeans would feel the same this year. But by next November or December I’ll feel differently and welcome the snow.
So if PJ is up for it, let it snow, let it snow…..

Maybe it's exactly because the snow is such a familiar element to me that it reminds me of home. It makes the fantasy world more close to my world, so it makes me feel more like I could actually visit that magical place.
I especially love snowy woods. The opening scene of the first episode of the season one of Game of Thrones for instance is one of my favorite scenes of the whole series. Mostly because the snowy woods. Nothing really needed to even happen there, they could have just walked through those woods for the entire episode and I would have propably loved it.
But I agree, this time of the year it's quite enough with the snow already. And, yet, come november I cannot wait for it to start snowing again...

When he's on the ice playing in the snow in central park with Anne.It's so beautiful to look at and its so peaceful and serene until the missle impacts the surface and it's just chaos.I like the mood for that setting and although the tensions will be rising, at that moment between Thorin and Bilbo i would like the transtion from calm to chaotic war to be the same.In the same vein as saving private ryan.That would be cool.

I imagine Bilbo slipping on the Ring during the BO5A and then he gets hit on the head and falls unconscious to the ground, and slowly and steadily he gets covered with snow until he looks like a little white barrow, there are drops of blood on the white barrow from slain Elves and Dwarves, there could be red poppies growing where the dead lay, maybe a wounded Elf stumbles over Bilbo and he groans and so they find him in the cold quiet killing fields.

It covers up the fouler trappings of modernity and transports us to a Wintery Fairy land, full of enchantment and possibility and Wonder. That is the magic of snow, or much of it anyway. I live in the midwest US and regularly see snow every winter (and I love it), but seeing a huge battle(s) played out...in Middle earth....FIVE ARMIES....in the snow?! Yes please.

Even though snow here in Finland is far from exotic, it's still very much romantic and enchanting. Everything seems soft and quiet, the forests and the hills and the buildings and the streets and even the people with their woolly coats and woolly hats seem veiled, hiding what ever you can dream up. It's as if the whole world exhales softly and pauses for a thought.
And it's also linked to childhood, of course. Making snow men and building snow castles and having snow fights. Every time the first snowfall of the year comes part of me feels that pure joy again.
Still, I'm guessing people who try to shovel their frozen cars free when they are late from the office don't feel that romance...

I believe along with snow during TBO5A we will see some precipitation in and around Mt.Gundabad as it seems to be in an area where snow hits quite often. I can see it now....snow coming down as the massive Orc army mobilizes for their attack on Erebor! Imagine that for a moment!
