The 'I like Azog' thread. Can't Post

I couldn't help but notice a substantial amount of Azog hate on here. It's odd and frankly a lot of people seemed to have made up their minds about him before the film even came out. Personally I really like the character, I think he's a nasty piece of work which is great as an antagonist. I also don't get why some think he looks too CGI. I saw the film in multiple formats including IMAX and HFR and never thought about the CGI once, it's pretty flawless and I just think some of the criticism is nitpicking. In saying that I still prefer real Orc prosthetics but Azog doesn't bother me.

I'm also noticing a lot of people pinning their hopes on Bolg replacing him. I wouldn't get your hopes up, you might be letting yourself in for disappointment. From the images I've seen so far to me he somewhat resembles a Beast-Man action figure from Masters of the Universe which is unfortunate. Of course he could turn out to be brilliant but it could go either way. Hopefully PJ can do something interesting with the character.

Tbh of all the problems with The Hobbit (the cartoony action, the pacing, The Goblin King, messing up Howard Shore's music etc...) Azog is pretty far down the list. The rage needs to be focussed elsewhere on the bigger issues instead of just one character who's only onscreen for about 20 minutes out of 166.

YAY [In reply to] Can't Post

I wanted to make a similar thread but wanted to call it "Favorite things about AUJ". Loved Azog and I thought he looked so awesome CGI, and very menacing. I like to joke and say he makes all his pals do the work for him (in the current time, not the orcs vs. dwarves) cause he just demands them to do all the work, haha

"It's odd " [In reply to] Can't Post

Why?

Were it the other way around, and there was a substancial amount of love for him , would it also be odd?

I made up my mind about him when i saw him. Not before the film came out.

People mention his obvious fakeness because it is pretty perceptible, hes nowhere near the level of Gollum, for instance. No surprise since he was created at the last minute.

Check the Amon Hen scene and notice ho much different do those both characters look like...one is an obvious mask, the other is obviously CGI...

But if that was the only issue people have with him,..

I like the look of Azog [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally I think it's cool for a villain and he is much better-looking than any other orc from the LotR :P

But I don't understand the point of reviving this character and what he contributes to the storyline. I guess I'll make a judgement on him when the whole serie is over.

Stupid Sexy Azog (Or, the fun to be had watching AUJ with non-fans) [In reply to] Can't Post

I've, um, "admitted" elsewhere that I liked Azog in the movie so instead of reiterating that here I thought I'd share a story! Last week I took my mom to see AUJ (yes, it's still playing in theatres here!) and her response went something like this.

MOM: The white Orc was cool. He should have been in the movie more. What was he called?

ME: Azog.

MOM: Yeah, he was cool. Can you print me a picture of him?

[I print out a screenshot.]

MOM: Can I have another one?

[A dozen screenshots later...]

MOM: Thanks! What was his name again? Ozzie?

Okay, I forgot what my point was, but I guess it's that Azog is liked well enough as a villain by your average moviegoer. Those who haven't read the books won't be bothered by the fact that he's supposed to be dead, and although his CGI isn't outstanding like Gollum's I think it's still as good as if not better than most of what's out there. Of course, these aren't necessarily good things, but like I said I forgot what my point was. Laugh

I like the character [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't say I agree with the change to Tolkien's timeline and events, but I do like the character. I think the CGI is great, and will probably be improved upon for the next two films.

If I had it my way, I'd get rid of all these Azog threads. They are boring. Wink Let's talk about Galadriel. Sly

I'm a fan of Azog. I think he's pretty threatening and the CGI work on him is pretty impressive, on par with the Goblin King but not quite up there with Gollum just yet.

The thing I like most about Azog [In reply to] Can't Post

is there's a real sense that he is a true Orc lord. He gives the orders, thank you very much. And he's not interested in the scheming of Sauron and all those other Maiar spirits gone bad. Azog has his own agenda, and he is no slave to the dark powers. It'll be interesting to see how he develops in the next films. How will he interact with Bolg, Legolas and Woodland Elves.... the Necromancer? Oh, and one other thing is that unlike most bad guys he will probably succeed in his primary purpose. That is, destroying the line of Durin (the direct line anyway). I think this guy has a lot of potential as a memorable villain. They're already half way there with the aesthetics of him.

Azog and Radagast are the most controversial characters. No need to get offended; I was just confirming this wasn't a joke thread before I put up a sarcastic response.

But to each his own...I wish I liked him, it would have made the movie that much more enjoyable.

This is not an April Fool's thread, guys >_<

Give those a chance to praise a lot of the disliked elements of the movie. There's enough threads bashing the movie and it'd be nice to finally have one where there isn't someone bashing it.

Anyhow, I think Azog will definitely look even better over the next film(s) even though I think he looks awesome as it is. And I feel that he's a great character to be had if he feels menacing to you, which he does to me, especially when his warg grabs Thorin.

Although I don't particularly like Azog [In reply to] Can't Post

(and it's not the inclusion of him as a character, but his physical appearance that I don't care for), I will totally support your standing up for Azog thread! I'm glad that some people take pleasure in things that others don't in the film, and although I know it's inevitable that things will get nitpicked to death at times, for good or ill, I think it's nice to see positive comments being made. I try not to dwell on negative things myself, but try to find the positive instead. So, as far as Azog goes, I can't say that I hate him, no. Hate is a very strong word. So as much as I may dislike certain aspects of him, I'd say he makes a good major Bad Guy for Thorin to fight against, and I loved the scene where Bilbo stands against him to defend Thorin, exhibiting not only his caring for Thorin, but the level of courage he had attained at that point. But I gotta say that I hope he gets his just desserts in the next film at the hands of Thorin. (And I think his son Bolg is just so awesome looking; quite the opposite from your point of view.)

I really like Azog's design and movement. [In reply to] Can't Post

He has a physical presence and menace that works for me. His dialogue, on the other hand, I'm not a fan of.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I liked him the first time [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw the movie. He was a complete surprise to me & I had no idea he was totally CGI. After reading comments here & then seeing the movie again I thought it would be better if he looked more real like Gollum. Maybe they will change him for the next movie. They did it for Gollum so I think it would work.

This is, of course, your opinion. I'm happy that you like Azog, and I wish I could like him. I've accepted his presence, but grudgingly. I'm not going to let him ruin my experience of these films that I've been patiently waiting for, for what seems like forever.

Anyway, can you at least understand WHY some of us are not fans of Azog's presence?

As for Bolg, I think he looks just like an orc-captain should look.

I think this is where the problem lies [In reply to] Can't Post

It seems to be more of the thought of things being CGI that makes people hate it. If PJ told everyone there was zero CGI but there actually was, I bet more people would say it all looks just fine. But because they were told it is CGI, they don't like it. I think all the CGI looks wonderful and has come a long way, even since LOTR.
