---> ANNOUNCEMENT Re: DoS sneak peak
|
Can't Post
|
|
UPDATE to the information below: we've been informed by Warner Bros. that we can't post any screen caps with any of our commentary. Sorry for any disappointment this may cause. We will strive, as always, to bring you the most detailed coverage we can within the constraints we have to work under. As we pretty much all know by now, The sneak peak of the Desolation of Smaug, accessible with a code from the Hobbit DVD, will be airing Sunday, March 24 (tomorrow) at 3:00 p.m. EDT. As we also all pretty much know, copied videos will almost immediately start popping up on the internet. Warner Bros. legal department is going to be taking these down immediately and, to protect our site (which is all-volunteer and doesn't have the money for any legal battles) we'll be immediately deleting any videos, or links to videos, that crop up here. The good news is that we've explained to WB that, as the premier Tolkien/movie fan site, we need to at least be allowed to post in great detail about it here (meaning the boards, the Home Page news and facebook), so they've agreed to let us do a detailed analysis and commentary on our Home Page, complete with screen captures. This should be showing up on the Home Page within a few hours after the sneak peak with a companion post made to this forum. They've agreed to let us do this on the condition that no video show up on our site, so we've agreed not to allow any. Aside from our wish not to incur the legal wrath of any organization or company, we've always had a great embedded respect for copyrighted material and for those who produce them, whether they be studios, authors or artists. Part of this is due to having great relationships with many of them, and not wanting to ruin that, and part of it is because we feel it's the right thing to do. That's why any bootlegged video, pictures or screencaps of anything not yet officially available, etc., are deleted immediately. Finally, remember that if you're unable to watch the sneak peek tomorrow, there will be a modified version on official Hobbit site. Other than that, stay tuned for our VERY detailed commentary tomorrow! ETA: PLEASE look for existing posts about the sneak peek before starting a new one.

But I can't wait for TORn's extensive report! Those are always good

Do I put it in now? I don't see anywhere on hobbit.com/sneak to put it. Or do I gotta go to a different site?

bunch of bull. warner can do whatever they want. it will be all over the internet on sites like metacafe. they can delete it on youtube but not on the internet. i think it's a disgusting money grab to force people to buy dvd because they know this time around people will be waiting for EE's and not double buy.

But sites like this shouldn't condone nor support that and there is liability in doing so. Many message boards, including this one, have strict copyright enforcement policies on posting and they should. It's not unique to WB. all they are saying is you can't link it or view it here. If someone chooses to illegally download, TORN can't control that. They can though control what is posted on their site which is a violation of copyright law.

I never cease to be impressed by the professionalism and high standards of ethics that go on behind the scenes here. And I love that TORn has such a great working relationship with PJ, Weta, WB, and other interested parties. Can't wait to see the detailed analysis -- good on WB for agreeing to it -- I've got my fingers crossed to see the sneak peek live but knowing my luck, something will go wrong!

I fully support this respect for the laws of various countries and the respect for the ownership of the material/product.

Thank you for the update, Altaira. As someone who used to publish a genre related magazine online and officially endorsed fan sites, I truly appreciate all the hard work TORn does to work with official channels. I look forward to the sneak peak tomorrow. And completely agree with your post Roheryn.

Everything to do with the movie belongs to the people who hold the rights. The sneak peek is something WB is putting on and will be shown on their site, as it remains their property. It is a DVD extra, though it is accessible from a site rather than the physical disc. It's up to the individual to decide if the offered package is worth spending the money to see. They are allowing us to post screencaps and detailed analysis giving lots of details about this preview, which is something they would not normally endorse. But they are not giving it away for free, and we will not participate in the giving away of property which is not ours.

just gives the website, so I imagine a login page will appear there tomorrow before the event. Just to be clear, the TORN staff aren't involved in the event except as fans/journalists, so we won't be able to act as tech support for it. This is WB's show.

At least they'll show some of it on their website at some point. I'm still not sure when. But the thing that bothers me is the fact that the full event is live. I paid for the blu-ray and have my code. But because I'm busy tomorrow during the event, I won't get to see the whole thing that I technically paid for.

There's no way to make a live, one-time happening convenient for everyone. At least they're going to keep the archived version available on the site for those who have codes.

but for the wider fandom it can be pretty cool. It was pointless for me to try for the code because the broadcast is at 8am on Monday, when I start work, and there will be heaps of people for whom the timing doesn't work - but there will be so, so many people around the world who can make the broadcast work for them. Regardless of marketing and profit targets, it's a pretty fantastic thing for Warner Brothers to do, IMO.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
