---> ANNOUNCEMENT Re: DoS sneak peak Can't Post

UPDATE to the information below: we've been informed by Warner Bros. that we can't post any screen caps with any of our commentary. Sorry for any disappointment this may cause. We will strive, as always, to bring you the most detailed coverage we can within the constraints we have to work under.

As we pretty much all know by now, The sneak peak of the Desolation of Smaug, accessible with a code from the Hobbit DVD, will be airing Sunday, March 24 (tomorrow) at 3:00 p.m. EDT. As we also all pretty much know, copied videos will almost immediately start popping up on the internet. Warner Bros. legal department is going to be taking these down immediately and, to protect our site (which is all-volunteer and doesn't have the money for any legal battles) we'll be immediately deleting any videos, or links to videos, that crop up here.

The good news is that we've explained to WB that, as the premier Tolkien/movie fan site, we need to at least be allowed to post in great detail about it here (meaning the boards, the Home Page news and facebook), so they've agreed to let us do a detailed analysis and commentary on our Home Page, complete with screen captures. This should be showing up on the Home Page within a few hours after the sneak peak with a companion post made to this forum. They've agreed to let us do this on the condition that no video show up on our site, so we've agreed not to allow any.

Aside from our wish not to incur the legal wrath of any organization or company, we've always had a great embedded respect for copyrighted material and for those who produce them, whether they be studios, authors or artists. Part of this is due to having great relationships with many of them, and not wanting to ruin that, and part of it is because we feel it's the right thing to do. That's why any bootlegged video, pictures or screencaps of anything not yet officially available, etc., are deleted immediately.

Finally, remember that if you're unable to watch the sneak peek tomorrow, there will be a modified version on official Hobbit site. Other than that, stay tuned for our VERY detailed commentary tomorrow! Smile

ETA: PLEASE look for existing posts about the sneak peek before starting a new one.

Yes there will be [In reply to] Can't Post

But sites like this shouldn't condone nor support that and there is liability in doing so. Many message boards, including this one, have strict copyright enforcement policies on posting and they should. It's not unique to WB. all they are saying is you can't link it or view it here. If someone chooses to illegally download, TORN can't control that. They can though control what is posted on their site which is a violation of copyright law.

Why should we? [In reply to] Can't Post

Everything to do with the movie belongs to the people who hold the rights. The sneak peek is something WB is putting on and will be shown on their site, as it remains their property. It is a DVD extra, though it is accessible from a site rather than the physical disc. It's up to the individual to decide if the offered package is worth spending the money to see.

They are allowing us to post screencaps and detailed analysis giving lots of details about this preview, which is something they would not normally endorse. But they are not giving it away for free, and we will not participate in the giving away of property which is not ours.

Sometimes things just don't work out for individuals, [In reply to] Can't Post

but for the wider fandom it can be pretty cool. It was pointless for me to try for the code because the broadcast is at 8am on Monday, when I start work, and there will be heaps of people for whom the timing doesn't work - but there will be so, so many people around the world who can make the broadcast work for them. Regardless of marketing and profit targets, it's a pretty fantastic thing for Warner Brothers to do, IMO.

Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Hey, long time! I trust you are doing well. Vaya con Dios.Heart

To the thread in general: I remember experiencing a little disappointment with different LOTR products that contained bonuses (contests IIRC) that were only available in certain regions or at certain times. But you get over such things, eventually, you know?

This one is different in that it's basically an advertisement for an upcoming film... how is that a bonus exactly? Furthermore, unless it's complete DrOSs, it's in WB's interests that as many people as possible are able to see it. Marketing has taken a weird turn... or maybe I'm just getting old.

As Magpie said, thanks for the clearly stated guidelines. Smile

It's just something extra you get if you buy the blu-ray/dvd. It seems like effort's being put into it, by both WB and PJ himself, to make it new and interesting. There is nothing wrong with making money! [In reply to] Can't Post

and if you think it's so bad, then stop right now and throw all yours away!

Those of us who bought the blu-ray could very well consider it free. Those of you who didn't for any reason, I could see why you'd think it wasn't free BUT WB does not have to do this, Jackson does not have to do this. Heck, they could just cancel the whole thing with no warning if they chose. We could be waiting months for normal trailers and previews.

I know my comment will likely come across as a bit harsh or cranky and I am amazed and disappointed at the constant complaining. I know, I don't have to read it and I usually scroll over it but I chose to finally make this comment today. I guess I just miss the days of FOTR, TTT, and ROTK when I recall TORN being filled with positive discussions - and by positive I do not mean all glowing praise but actual discussions rather than whining and complaining about the studio making money, Jackson making money, blaming Boyens for every little script detail that someone didn't like, how the commenter could have done it better (really? go get a studio to give you hundreds of millions of dollars and we'll see), how GDT would have done this or that better, how so-and-so actor would have been better in such and such role, and so forth. It's no where near as interesting or as much fun as it once was. I feel like Bilbo, "I am sorry but I had to speak my mind".

DVD [In reply to] Can't Post

My issue isn't at all with the live event which I think is a great idea. I was skeptical at first but have quickly warmed up to it and think it's a good move to pre market both the DVD Blur ray and the upcoming film. That having been said my issue is with the way WB didn't think outside the box and for whatever reason didn't release the DVD/BR disc worldwide at one time. Maybe there are logisitics I don't know about, that's highly possible since I'm not up to date on everything. That having been said I think it was a mistake to release the film to DVD the way they did.

It's still a great opportunity. It's great that they want fans asking questions (I just hope they are more unique. I'm tired of the same questions being asked and answered over and over)

There are indeed logistics [In reply to] Can't Post

For a simultaneous release, every format (3D, blu-ray, DVD) and every language of every disc would have to be manufactured for the entire planet, transported to all the distribution centers and then to the stores (online or brick and mortar), marketing events and advertising prepared all around the world in every language, and so on. There may not be enough manufacturing facilities to accomplish this which would mean manufacturing some versions and then storing them until they were all ready which costs and thus delays income from the sales. Companies are in business to make money not store consumer-ready product in order to satisfy someones idea of what is "fair". Companies have share holders which would soon replace those who made such costly decisions.

If it were me, I would select which regions of the world were likely to produce the most profit and market and sell the discs there. In this case, one has to think "Western World" - ie, historical British Empire (why every single bit wasn't included, I don't know). In fact, that seems to be exactly what WB has done.

A good working relationship does not, as a rule, include giving product away for free.

TORN is doing the right thing here and always when they remove comments which include copyrighted material and/or links to unauthorized sources of same. I wouldn't want my work being given away for free. I work to earn money to make my life better, easier, more interesting. I expect everyone involved in these films does the same.

I would [In reply to] Can't Post

suggest the barrow downs forum- you will read things there you might almost never read here- or The Hall of Fire.

Theres also TORC, but that can be too PJ bowing at times...

Good search.

mean spiritedness you mean different and critical opinions from the ones here or anywhere else, then yes. I find them very enlightening and instructive. Clearly, there are many people over there who know a lot about Tolkien and understand him quite well.

Too each his own, i suppose.

Can't and perhaps, don't want to stop it... [In reply to] Can't Post

It's marketing, a standard one and not a rip off, no one is forced to buy the blu-ray. It's a marketing tool to maximise sales in the intial week or two of release.

This gets the Blu-ray to the top slot of the sales charts and therefore in all possible retail outlets as well as aiding any sales records e.g. fastest selling blu-ray of all time, that AUJ may achieve. Once that is done, once today is over, WB knows that they won't be able to stop the pirates or Youtube clips and a I doubt that they really want to, as the purpose of the exclusive preview will have been served and whatever is out there afterwards will still serve as publicity for DOS.

The Blu-ray code is as far as I am concerned a premier, and as it's a blu-ray and not air, water or food, no one is being forced to buy it, like no one was ever forced to buy every edition of FOTR or ROTK because they had different bonus features.

The event, will be readily available on the internet within hours of it's broadcast and I doubt WB will be getting their army of lawyers out to stop it.

I can't speak for anywhere else [In reply to] Can't Post

But there are no mean-spirited discusssions at The Hall of Fire. There is, perhaps, a broader acceptance of different points of view, but mean-spirtedness is neither tolerated, nor, frankly, as much of a problem as it as at larger sites such as this one (though I am quick to add that the administrators here do a fantastic job at nipping any such problems in the bud).

URGENT Question [In reply to] Can't Post

I have an urgent question - if I pre-order the Hobbit DVD now from Amazon UK or Amazon Germany (amazon.co.uk says it will be released on the 8th of April, amazon.de the week after that) - will I get the code for tonight per email or so so that I can watch the live event?

Thanks!

To each his own for sure [In reply to] Can't Post

Nothing wrong with different or critical. It's really all in how you deliver the message. I feel AO here is fantastic with how he expresses his opinion be it whatever is in the post. He has been critical of several things but he does a fantastic job of remaining respectful, and that is a major thing if you want your opinion to carry any weight with people. That's what I love about this place is there are many just like him. People that can be different, critical, and respectful without beating you over the head with you're wrong because I feel differently. I think it's also clear there are many people who know a lot about Tolkien here. I guess it comes down to how you want your different/critical.

So you're right to each their own.

Totally agree Lusitano [In reply to] Can't Post

You and I disagree on the film somewhat but neither one of us is disagreeable. There's a difference. Difference of opinion is what sharpens debate and increases knowledge. Also, I am open to changing my opinions and am open to what people who don't have my view may have to say. I have changed my view on numerous matters in life on many things based on different opinions giving me a different view. But yes, to each his own. I support that.

I'd rather that fans [In reply to] Can't Post

had the option of buying a DVD and getting access to a live event like this, than Warner Brothers not being bothered with offering it.

If you don't want to be part of this, don't be - but why rain on the parade of those who are excited about it?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
