SAST Quiz #8 Can't Post

*Ro strolls in with bottles of “Dragonz B Gon” dragon repellent to share and wearing a flame-proof suit* Greetings and salivations, and a warm (VERY warm, in this case – burning hot, you might say!) welcome to this week’s edition of the Short Attention Span Theatre! This week we’re covering Chapter 14, “Fire and Water”. As with every SAST quiz, the basics: each question is worth one point, the quiz stays open three days, and the quiz is unquestionably and absolutely CLOSED BOOK. This means NO PEEKING. Peekers, peepers, and other sorts of cheaters will be left in Laketown for Smaug to roast (aye, he’ll melt the flesh right off your bones!), and then will be forced to row the Master’s gilded boat for him while he drinks wine and drunkenly sings “Row row row your boat” on endless repeat. *shudder* Fair enough? Grab a bottle of dragon repellent, think furnace with wings, and off you go!

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?

Spring is less than a week away, and it's SNOWING here. Temps below freezing for most of the week.

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?

I think there was a sound of thunder.

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?

Can't remember the name, but it was the leader of Dale.

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?

The thrush spoke in his ear, and he marveled that he could understand the words.

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?

Into the lake, with a huge splash. And his body was never recovered, nor were the jewels that fell off his rotting carcass.

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?

The elves, which causes all sorts of problems with the dwarves.

must be Smaug.

1. sss I remember something about gold coming down the river but not the kind they were expecting.

2. Diabolical Sausages?

3. Aha! A bird told him, of course.

4. Directly upon Esgaroth -- at least the impact put the fires out. Bitter sweet, I say.

5. Hmm more tricks!? The first to come to their aid was Bard. But if you are asking about help for outside, I'll have to guess Thranduil and company.

Dale of Dale? the son of Dale? or maybe it was his brother Dale?

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?
Into the Long Lake?

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?
The big countdown clock in Esgaroth's central square. (Smaug lands atop the mountain and lets out a roar and flame.)

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?
I'm going to take a shot in the dark (much as Bard did) and say Girion.

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?
A little bird told him. Literally. (The thrush.)

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?
Into the deep, cold, saturating Long Lake - the anti-home of fire beasts.

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?
The "we just happened to be in the area" Elves of Mirkwood.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Yay, quiz-time! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh, I think I've run out of dragon repellent, so I have to be quick about this...

1. Ermhph. Hmph. Uuugh. Eeeek. Yeah. Well. I think my brain just crashed. Error 404 - Hot Dwarf Overload. So let's talk about something entertaining while I wait for it to reboot. Like Thorin's hair. Ooh, I know, Thorin got his hair singed (again) by big, bad old Smaug. They heard Thorin's cursing and swearing all that way to Esgaroth. That's how they knew that an attack was imminent. Ok, my brain is still out on that one.

2. Bard was a descendant of Girion, who was something-something of Dale. King? Did they have a king in Dale? In any case, Girion was Boss of Dale (may not have been his actual title). The real question would be, did he have awsome hair like a certain King under the Mountain I could mention? You have to have awsome hair to be king of anything in those parts.

3. From the raven! No, it's a thrush, actually, isn't it? Little birdie anyway. And it can talk - or Bard can understand Birdish (Thrushish?), and the birdie heard it from... someone else. Potentially Thorin, who does have a bit of a brain under his wonderful mane of hair, so he can be quite clever (that's my opinion, anyway). Or it could have been someone else. Does that still count as an answer?

4. He landed on Esgaroth - hopefully a part that had already been evacuated completely. Crushed by Dragon is not a nice death. Wasn't Thorin almost stepped on by Smaug when the dragon invaded Erebor? His hair at the time was still quite black, but that might have caused him to get a few grey hairs, which no doubt made him hate that dragon even more. Just thought I'd mention that.

5. Interestingly enough, I seem to remember that it's Thranny - pardon me, Thranduil the Elvenking - who was just taking his army out for a spin or something. Or when asking his Magic Mirror the usual question of "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's got the prettiest hair of all?", the Mirror told Thranduil, "Your hair, my King, is pretty, but Thorin Oakenshield's, up in the Lonely Mountain, with the twelve other Dwarves and one Hobbit, is a thousand times prettier than yours." This, of course, made Thranduil very angry, so he gathered his army and began to march towards the Lonely Mountain (since he had not gotten any delivery of apples, which he could have poisoned, since that mysterious incident with the barrels), just to show that Dwarvish upstart whose hair was the prettiest. And the rest, as they say, is history.

And now I better run before that dragon catches up with me!

SAST Quiz #7 ANSWERS & RESULTS [In reply to] Can't Post

*Ro walks in with a big bowl of homemade chocolate chip cookies* Thanks to everyone who participated in Quiz #7! Have a cookie – they’re perfect on grey rainy days, which is exactly what we’re having here. I told you I’d make this quiz easier than #6: average score was a 4.0, so well above mediocrity there! That bench is looking a little lonely…

(By the way, the moon runes on the map that even Elrond didn’t spot, right above the secret door, read: “Smoulder majestically, and enter” – turns out Thorin didn’t need the key after all!)

Answers

1. Bilbo, Balin, Fili, and Kili get sent on a scouting expedition in which they follow the Running River around the southern spur of the mountain until they can see the front gate. What do they see emerging from the front gate that suggests that Smaug is home?

“Out of it [the opening in the cliff-wall] the waters of the Running Rivers sprang; and out of it too there came a steam and a dark smoke. … ‘The dragon is still alive and in the halls under the Mountain then – or I imagine so from the smoke,’ said the hobbit.”

2. Bilbo, Fili, and Kili are scouting together one day in the valley on the western side of the mountain. What does Bilbo find that leads them to the little steep-walled bay high up on the mountain-side?

“About midday, creeping behind a great stone that stood alone like a pillar, Bilbo came on what looked like rough steps going upwards. Following these excitedly he and the dwarves found traces of a narrow track…that wandered on to the top of the southern ridge and brought them at last to a still narrower ledge….Silently…they went in single file along the ledge, till the wall opened and they turned into a little steep-walled bay….”

3. Which dwarf refuses to come up to the camp in the steep-walled bay?

Bombur would not come up either the rope or the path.”

4. What animal is found in abundance in the bay?

“A large grey stone lay in the centre of the grass and he [Bilbo] stared moodily at it or watched the great snails. They seemed to love the little shut-in bay with its walls of cool rock, and there were many of them of huge size crawling slowly and stickily along its sides.”

5. What does Thorin have which allows them to open the hidden door?

“Then Thorin stepped up and drew the key on its chain from round his neck. He put it to the hole. It fitted and it turned!”

1) Those lucky folks with Middle Earth Disaster Radios got to hear the Dragon Siren alert first. Others had to wait until it got really, really warm.

2) Bard is descended from Drab, his great-great-great-great-great Grandfather.

3) Bard's ancestor Drab actually had been friends with Smaug before he took over Erebor. He was the original Johnny Paper and named him Puff. Puff went bad when he grew older, hanging out with an evil Dragon gang, the Tooth and Claw. Drab had always noticed that Puff was really ticklish in a certain spot on his belly. So he mentioned it to his son, to told his son and so on.

4) Smaug (aka Puff) falls onto a huge down pillow in the mountains. Dr. Phil McGraw (an American TV counselor) always said you need a soft place to fall, and he took the advice seriously. Thanks Dr. Phil!

5) The people of Esgaroth despaired until they saw a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer. Santa came to their rescue. They were dismayed when they found out the only food he'd brought was fruit cake.

Does the dragon with the flagon hold the brew that is true? Angelic

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?
A wind that reeks of crisply-fried ponies - it's the dreaded Dragonbreath! Tongue
(A golden light on the horizon when the River flows between two hills at the north end of the lake)

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?
Thorin. Dwarves being as long-lived as they are, and many women of Dale being attracted to this handsome prince, it was only bound to happen...
(The king of Dale at the time of Smaug's attack)

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?
A little birdie told him - literally: it was the Thrush who had been eavesdropping on the conversations of Bilbo and the dwarves.

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?
He falls into a tuck somersault followed by a double twist, finishing with a closed tuck for a rip entry, thus earning him a 9.5 for technical merit.
(But he lost points for falling on top of Laketown and smashing it into the lake.)

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?
The Red Cross. I don't know how, but they're on the spot five minutes after any disaster!
(The Elven-king and his troops)

I missed last week's, which was sad, because I actually knew 4 out of the 5! And this week's is such a toughie

1. I believe it was a golden glow on the water, and everyone gathered to see because they thought the river had literally turned to gold. Makes me feel a bit for the master, surrounded by idiots like that!

2. Thorin's hair? No? Then my far-fetched guess is Beren the one-handed

3. The wise, old, talking thrush comes and tells Bard. I wonder if that's where the saying, "A little bird told me" comes from?

4. Straight down into the lake, and it was so deep and cold it quenched his inner flame. So I guess he died by arrow, drowning and freezing to death. Puzzle for the coroners!

5. It must be the woodland elves with their army, off to claim their part of the treasure but not too hard hearted to help some refugees

The folks of Esgaroth, sadly, aren't so bright so they think surely it must be the new King forging gold.

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended? Girion of Chip n Dale. (And whether you read this as chipmunks or strippers, the party doesn't start until the wild furry little guys show up. Ask any Dwarf fancier.)

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?
There is a brief glow above the mountain, leading some to think that the dwarves had fired up their forges again. Then a larger, more sustained glow, that made them very excited.

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?
The former first family of Dale, the Girions.

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?
A little birdie told him - those thrushes, they can't keep a secret.

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?
Smack on the town, causing a vacuum that the lake rushes to fill (note that, "rushes" to fill?)

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?

Why no "which dwarf" questions? [In reply to] Can't Post

I actually know them!

It looks as if I'll miss SAST #9. I hope it will be about a chapter I don't know. Angelic

1. What is the first warning that a dragon attack on Esgaroth is imminent?
The red lights from the mountain. Then a golden one. And then its green, and he comes!

Even the guards watching Captain Midnight heard his roar after that.

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?

Fram of the Eotheod, with his history of slaying a dragon and sending the rightful owners of its treasure (dwarves, of course) to... (non-family-friednly expression, but he said in a live interview with Walter Cronkite; no original recordings exist, all the tapes have got the covering "bleep"). Thorin knew just what he was about when he asked Bard about this!

See, I managed to wiggle Thorin in - and it's even a plausible answer!

But however plausible, there is nothing in the text to indicate this (naturally, as Tolkien hasn't thought of the Eotheod yet). So we'll go with near ancestry - with Girion, lord of Dale.

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?

He's heard the same tales that even Bilbo has heard, about which dear father Bungo made his quip about worms and their weak spots (probably by watching the mini-series about Turin on TV).
But in case he forgot - there came the thrush to remind him.

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?

Down down underground below, my lad!

Isn't this enough for an answer? Okay then, smash upon the town hall, getting the TV-antenna which the Master erected in its real soft spot (which nobody remembered, of course, much to the master's chagrin).
It broke the hall, and ruined the town.

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?

The Elvenking on his magic stag.

But this time he wasn't in a hurry, so he could stay around and help some.
When Erebor fell, he was eager to see the next chapter of North and South, so he couldn't stay.

The idiot! Had he only waited, he could have seen Richard Armitage life-size - and with all that magnificent hair, no less!

Cheers Ro! I'll miss #9, but I'll be back for #10!

And well done wiggling Thorin in on #2, and RA (and the hair) in #5. LOL!

By the way, in answer to the question you asked *last* week, about your rope answer on Quiz 6: yes, I was being a cruel quizmistress -- it wasn't a rope made of his things, it was an actual rope. Sometimes I'm hardnosed on a question, sometimes I'm lenient, but either way I do my best to be consistent with everybody!

Horn blowing seems to be the Middle Earth warning-of-choice. Second guess would be someone yelling "dragon!" or "aaahhhh!"

2. From which famous ancestor is Bard descended?
Probably a royal male human that lived around that area. Laugh

3. How does Bard find out about Smaug’s weak spot?

4. Where does Smaug fall after he is struck down by Bard?

5. Who comes first to the aid of the people of Esgaroth, after the town is destroyed by Smaug?
