It was so much fun. Especially when you're new to Tolkien. 
I wish I had been old enough to watch the movies, but at the time I was three and had a horrible fear of Gollum.

One of my older brothers introduced me to The Hobbit. And I in turn introduced my kids to Tolkien's works. And the older two got into fantasy and roleplaying from there.
My eldest now works for a company which runs one of the massive multiplayer online games, and my son is studying computer game design...you never know how it will influence them!

but she'll join the community in a more 'official' capacity one of these days. As it is, she and her brother (my Hobbit) participate by reading some of the posts from time to time. Most recently, they did Roheryn's logic puzzle on Main, and Beamer participates with me in the Walk to Rivendell thread.
That's the key: corrupt 'em while they're young  I love my kids!

I am preparing to corrupt my cousins already. I taught them the first few lines of "Chip the glasses and crack the plates". They were singing it for days on end and annoying their parents. They even stamped their feet and were rowdy. I'm so glad I'm creating little rude dwarves. .

I am 23 now but I first watched the trilogy and read the books when I was 14. I wouldn't give up my passion for them for anything. Not even money! I too feel like I am alone in my age group and in my area but I know that's not true and that why I decided to join TorN and I am so glad I did. Keep your head up BoromirOfWinterfell!

so I'm not really a teenager anymore.
However, I've got two boys, ages 11 and 6, who love The Hobbit and LOTR movies. I also have a niece and nephew I'm indoctrinating, even though they live 2 hours away from me. (My niece made the Sculpey clay Smaug in my footer shortly after reading TH for the first time.)
This past Christmas was at our house and all the nieces and nephews ate at the "kids' table" so they got up a rousing version of "Chip The Glasses". Instead of "That's what Bilbo Baggins hates", it was "That's what Auntie Cookie hates"!

So happy to see all of the young people here. My son doesn't post yet but he has loved LOTR since he was nine. I feel privelieged to share it with him, and TORn with all of you!

in that vein. Just a story on fandom.
Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to discover Tolkien via Jackson's films. I discovered harry Potter after seeing the first HP film when it came out, then I had to go back and take a crash course with the first 3 books. But my favorite tory of discovering a new life-changing fandom is with my sister, and it illisutates the power of cinema, even on a small screen.
This was back during the late 90's. Picture the typical snarky, know-it-all 12 yr old. (Just as snarky then as now. ) And a sports-oriented person and a tomboy to boot. Couldn't get her to read if I paid her. Whereas I have always been the intellectual. Reading James Michener's "The Source" at age 9., tackling "Shogun" at 11..etc.
But I am doing a Star Wars trilogy marathon, (the origional one, episodes 4-6, for all you folks to whom the Prequels came out when you were toddlers) on a rainy day, I had't watched them for a long time, and Snarky Kid Sis comes in, to find me wandering through the Tatooine desert with Artoo and Threepio, wondering "How did we get into this mess? I really don't know how," (yep, even now I can quote the whole trilogy by heart, and --sssshhh!---most of the Prequels too), and wonders what the heck I' watching. She's hear of Star Wars of course, but couldnt be bothred, it was one of Sis's weird obsessions, like Tolkien and U2. But I talked her into sitting down and watching it with me--she must have been really bored.
Over the next 2 hours, something miraculous happened--something miraculous and a bit scary. Snarky Kid Sis devolved--?--dissolved?--regressed?--to a wondering, wide-eyed child of 4. She sat still as a stone, then her mouth dropped open and continued to hang there, she stared at the screen and could not take her eyes away. She was mesmerized. I then said, "well, I guess you're too bored to see the next one, Empire" and she said "No, I want to see it, I want to see the next one, Please, Sunflower, PLEASE!" Her eyes had that soft look of wonder, even her voice had changed--she really sounded like she was 4 again. If you saw ET, you remember that scene were Teri Garr is reading "Peter Pan" to Little Drew Barrymore, as Gertie, and Gertie goes, "Will you read it to me again?" I SWEAR, she sounded just like that. It was, as I said, almost scary. But in the best possible way! Oh, if there were more moents like that, when we all became as little children again!
Today, when she;s in the mood, she still loves doing Yoda imitations...but I haven't' been able to get her to read Tolkien yet...one day maybe!
