Just got in, such a joy. My son playing the soundtrack all the way home. Well I'm sure not getting LESS attached to these amazing charactars! Though I have to say Eowyn I also browsed the last chapter yesterday looking for a quote and oh my...a tear ran down my cheek just accidentally seeing the Fili and Kili sentence (I was avoiding it but saw it anyway)!!!!!

I will say I'm able to hold it together for the most part in public. Though into the West is the part that does get me. Now at home it's a different ball game and I don't have to hold back. It's been a while but after watch of FOTR my sister asked me why I liked these movies so much. For some reason explaining it I just started crying. I'm not sure why but I think it was just trying to explain why Middle-earth (both book and movie) means so much to me.

I saw FotR and TTT 12-15 times in the theater. I think i only saw RotK around 5 or 6 times, though i'm not sure why so few as i can't really remember. I certainly liked it as much as the first two (in my mind it's TTT > FotR > RotK, though it's very, very close). I guess i was just doing other things at the time.
Part of the reason i haven't seen AUJ as much is because money's short right now. But even if money weren't an object, i doubt i would see it much more than 4 or 5 times. It's just a little bit lesser than the LotR films, with not as many great, memorable moments. I still like it, and will get both the Theatrical and Extended Editions, and will watch them many many times. It just doesn't have that something extra that sticks in my brain and drives me to leave the house and drop 10-15 bucks once or twice a week to take it all in again, get to know the characters a little better, and try to spot something new. I hope that changes with more viewings, but that's gonna have to wait for the blu-ray...

and it's disappeared from the local theatres, but it's still playing in IMAX at the museums in DC, so I'd like to catch it at least once more.
I've been wondering why I kept going back to see it, since that's not something I've ever done before. I don't think I saw any of LotR movies more than once or twice in the theater, though the DVDs have certainly got a lot of mileage ;).
I've never liked 3-D, so I went to see the 2-D first, just to watch the story. I liked it very much, though I thought some scenes went on too long - Radaghast, White Council, stone giants. I loved the emphasis on Thorin's story and was thoroughly impressed by the performances of RA and MF. The dwarf-pack was simply fun to watch, and I appreciated all the links to LotR.
Then I went back for the 3-D HFR to see what Jackson's true visual intent was. I really was quite impressed. So sharp, so clear, such deep color saturation - which was a problem with other 3-D I've seen. There were so many rich details layered into every scene. And I was so happy they'd got the eagles right, finally! The floppy wings had bothered me every time I saw them, and now they had proper angular movement and you could see every feather fluttering...gorgeous.
I went back again for the 3-D HFR and this time I didn't find any of the scenes too long. Maybe because I knew enough just to sit back and enjoy everything that PJ and the actors and designers had made such an effort to create. I could think about what they were setting up for the next two movies, and really immerse myself in the experience.
Then 3-D HFR went away, and I decided to try IMAX 3-D. It was rather an assault on the senses - so loud, so big, so intense. But by the time it finished, I wanted to do it again - like a roller-coaster ride that knocks you about and takes your breath away :). So I went again when I had the chance.
It is a time commitment, and it's not cheap, especially with the inflated prices for 3-D and IMAX, but PJ really did create this movie for the intense, immersive experience of the theatre. I feel it's important to take advantage of that before the opportunity is gone.
And one more thing. Every time I've seen the movie, even when I felt some portions dragged on a bit, I felt an incredibly sharp sense of loss at the end. I wanted to keep going - to make it all the way to that mountain with these fabulous dwarves and their surprisingly resourceful Hobbit. I don't want to wait a year to finish that journey, but at present, the best I can do is replay the journey from the beginning, over and over again.
So yeah, that's why.

That's why its such a pleasure to have TORn, even though I sort of skipped out for a few years.
Will be so glad to share the second journey. And personally I will be happy to have AUJ to come back to as a happy place for a long time to come; like Gramma rightly says "it feels like a friend" (and long time might read 'forever'!)

Quite simply, I love Tolkien's beautiful stories and I love Peter Jackson's rendition of them.
Because of this, I gladly support them and enjoy each viewing as a special occasion. For me, it's one of the things in my life that makes me tick. I have seen The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 7 times. There are so many details to behold within the design, sets, and VFX that go along with the core of it all... the characters and story. Like many others here, I enjoy being transported to Middle Earth and experiencing it on a massive screen with totally immersive picture and sound. I saw all 3 of the LOTR trilogy many times in theaters as well and hoped that I would be able to do so when The Hobbit finally came to fruition. For me, there wasn't ever any question of whether I would like them or not. I knew that Peter Jackson and his entire crew would put their very heart, soul, and spirit into making the best movies that they could... and for me... those are beautiful, soulful, thoughtful, and enchanting movies. I am overjoyed at the opportunity to not only see the movie many times in theatres, but the choice of formats that have provided me different experiences altogether.
I loved HFR 3D and can't wait to see the final 2 acts in this format... loved it!
On my 7th viewing, after I had taken my beloved wife multiple times, I saw it with my father. He has never read the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit and has only seen glimpses of The Fellowship of the Ring. He does not read fantasy, nor has he ever shown in any interest in Tolkien or the genre. Also, he has never been to a 3D movie in his entire life. He accepted my invitation to go see TH:AUJ in HFR 3D. When it was over, I asked him to be brutally honest. He absolutely loved it. The story, characters, design, visuals... everything. He loved it and has promised to see parts 2 and 3 with me.
So ultimately, why multiple viewings? It's a chance to share something I love, with people who have a mutual love for it as well as introduce new people to this world.

Managed to talk Mr. Ro into kidsitting, and I absconded. This was on the (probable) best screen in our city that I've mentioned before -- the XTreme screen, in 3D HFR, and it was just fantastic. Wish I could have seen it every time this way. Expensive, though! But I was SOO impressed -- it was Sunday afternoon, and there were probably 200+ people (!!!) in the audience -- the huge theatre was about half full. Looks like it'll be around at least another week at that theatre, so maybe I'll be able to sneak #16 in too. I'm so pleased; I had thought it was going to be completely gone a couple of weeks ago, so this is a huge bonus.

There are a few films I will see twice, generally epic hero journey stuff like Avengers, or great animation like Brave. Some stuff I'll see once, anything else, I'll wait for the DVD.
There are rare films I will see over and over, even before they leave the theater; Star Wars, LOTR and The Hobbit are that kind of film.
I've been a Tolkien fan since I read LOTR in 1978, and waited quite a long time to see someone visualize it well.
Not only do I want to immerse myself in my favorite realm again and again... but PJ and crew have put so much detail and effort into visualizing this world and its characters that you NEED to see it multiple times just to catch all the geeky observations.
I'll be the one with the DVD in slo-mo, backing it up, and driving anyone watching with me insane...
think: fan, with remote... run awaaaaaaaaay

I then saw it in 2D, then saw it again at 48fps with a friend - and found that I really liked it! I think I just needed to get used to the idea of The Hobbit not having the same gritty realism in its visuals as the LOTR movies had.
