Did not find any thread discussion about his speech: http://tvnz.co.nz/entertainment-news/hobbit-fails-win-glory-mocked-baftas-5338299/video what do you think about it? Actors mock movies theyre in (and theyre not even in cinemas yet)? Whats next? And wheres this enthusiasm actors had about working on a middlearth project 10years ago? sorry if that is a double thread...

http://newboards.theonering.net/...orum_view_collapsed; As I hinted at there, it's probably just some biting British humour, or the kind you might expect at a roast. I wonder though what it means for an actor who commits a significant amount of time on a project, with the expectation that his performance will be seen (hopefully leading to more work) in given season, only to have it pushed to a later date (in this case a year later)? IIRC when speaking of LOTR, Viggo did not often mince words, depending on the issue of course.

He is hosting the baftas on this occasion so his job is to keep it entertaining and funny , its a running joke about the hobbit being split into 3 films and so its inevitable he is going to touch on it at the biggest film awards show in Britain, he is proud to be working on these films as you can tell from this interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud1M0O9kCsw

I didn't think it was anything insulting. Can see him saying it all right to PJs face and having it get a laugh in return.

Or do you really think so? The speech is from the opening of the ceremony and Fry couldn't possibly have known about 'The Hobbit' not winning awards - which makes the article redundant really.

Some of the best humor comes from when people don't take themselves too seriously. Haha! The cutaways to Martin Freeman and his wife laughing are great. They all know what has been said by the most critical and rather than be offended or get defensive, they are having a laugh about it. Every actor has been nothing but ecstatic about the journey and the end result. Martin Freeman, who was laughing right along with everyone else, also said on the BAFTA red carpet - on the same night - that he only participates in stories that he cares about... he only does movies with stories he loves.

...so he was never going to be in AUJ anyway. He just used it to make some easy gags to keep the audience laughing.

And wheres this enthusiasm actors had about working on a middlearth project 10years ago? The same thought came to my mind. The hobbit has become a cash cow and something people are joking about.

He doesn't mean anything like that. It's British humour - the kind of thing Stephen Fry always says when he hosts the BAFTAs. He was making the same kind of remarks about other films too, and about members of the audience. (And about Lord of the Rings in its day, too). And they weren't insulted. He's joking, just joking. He'd say the same to Peter Jackson and they'd both laugh.

Cracking a few jokes about the movie is harmless, and in my mind doesn't show a lack of respect towards the project. Stephen Fry is just being Stephen Fry, something he does very well

We mock the things we love. I agree with the other posters that it was all in good fun and there was no venom in what he said. And after seeing him hosting the BAFTAs I suddenly realized he would make a good Master of Laketown... :D

There is no reason why the Master of Lake-town shouldn't be in There and Back Again unless he is killed prematurely (as Saruman was in Jackson's LotR films).

It's just a style of humour we're very familiar with here and enjoy. Stephen Fry has hosted these awards for years and it's a prestigious event. The Academy would not bring him in to do this job if he were felt to be insulting the films and the people involved with them. This is a film industry night - it's their celebration. He just punctures the gush and pomposity that can surround these kind of events - did you notice his comments at the beginning about the length of winners' acceptance speeches? Far more significant, I think, is that The Hobbit was so prominent on the night, with Stephen Fry himself hosting and so many of the lead actors coming up to present individual awards, and so many references to The Hobbit. That speaks of something which is held in great affection here - and yes, we do make jokes about the things we care about.

... looking at how many other hosts of similar shows have made quite some jokes that were far more "egdy" over the years, I just cannot see anything "rude" about that. I think the only ones who will react offended by this are those who refuse to see that it is a valid discussion-point of this trilogy, especially if one just wanted an adaption of the Hobbit book. Personally, I do not even want to think about a two part Hobbit anymore - let alone one part - but OF COURSE many people may feel astranged by the three-movie solution, especially when they did not like the added stuff. A much worse scenario would be if the Hobbit was such a fail noone would even talk about it anymore.

That's just Mr Fry's way.may have sounded odd for him to say that about a movie he is in but he is a very clever and witty chap and wouldn't have said anything derogatory in any serious way.just a bit of fun that's all.
