the only place I know where it's given in its full-length version is as an appendix to the second edition of The Annotated Hobbit (annotated by Doug Anderson). The version in Unfinished Tales is shortened, as is the version in the LOTR appendices. The Thorin in the full-length version of The Quest is strikingly characterized much closer to movie-Thorin, which makes it a very interesting read after having seen the movie! Back atcha! {{{gramma}}}

and RA said he bashed a shield into his own face making his tooth go through his lip, and that he was mad at himself for doing so. I'm sure he also said it was during the Azanulbizar filming -- though it's possible they filmed the end scene on the Carrock right after that, I suppose! And yes, it was with Andy directing, not PJ.

You also didn't hear...drat, now I've forgotten who...Boromir? Legolas?...holler, when he saw the crows flying towards the Fellowship, "Eggplant from Dublin!"? Or think that Gimli in Moria said, "Ripe meat off the bone!"? Or hear Theoden say "Forth Air Lingus!"? Your ears must work pretty well.

Gah! Now there's an existential crisis for Ro:

Thorin and Legolas are walking together. Suddenly one heads north, the other south. Which one does she follow? (And you can't say Thorin because he's got a better sense of direction: he doesn't. He actually admits to getting lost twice on the way to Bilbo's. Legolas, though clearly unable to tell his southeasts from northwests, to the point where even Aragorn tells him to get a map, never actually admits he's directionally-challenged. So, based just on that, Ro should follow Thorin because at least he can admit to being lost!)

Thanks so much for providing the link. Only wish there was video. This is a nice long interview, and RA was given time to provide lots of detail as he answered questions. I loved his insights into the acting process -- his own and those of the actors around him. His tribute to Ian McKellan and how Ian "absolutely looks after" everyone he's in a scene with. How he would have loved to play Grima Wormtongue in LOTR, if he'd had the chance. And I was expecially intrigued by the question of whether there "was any mark left" by Del Toro that RA recognized during The Hobbit production. Armitage suspects, but doesn't name, "a certain creature left in the film which is all Del Toro, and I'll leave that for you to decide". My personal guess would be the goblin scribe.
...one morning long ago in the quiet of the world, when there was less noise and more green... The Hobbit

I've always thought he said "red', so I get to poke fun at those whom I think misheard it as "ripe". But then you're just as free to poke fun at me for hearing "red"!

Sorry.... But you DID note it! Was impressed as they did their homework apparently. And don't give anyone any more ideas to tax us all on. The blue flowers in front of Bag End almost look like blue baptisia (sp?) and the orange might be tuberoses. Darn it I completely missed the white-face object you mentioned. So I have to go for view 11 now.

I hear "red". Ripe meat? hmm. Ewww. Or ugly jailhouse slang. Either way no.

The horn that the dwarves hear as they huddle in the cavern is the same horn Legolas hears in Helm's Deep and says, "that is no orc horn."

Forgot this until reviewing FOTR. I think the crack in the corner of the tile where Bilbo drops the Ring before leaving for Rivendell isn't there. In AUJ time the floor looks shinier and I don't see any cracks. Nice aging detail.

Thanks SO much for all your hard work I didn't notice the Rohan sword in the troll cave - that is a very cool spot. And I really want to get hold of a copy of the Annotated Hobbit now. I'm also tickled by 'Eggplant from Dublin!'

Now I've got to go see it again. I also missed the Rohan sword in the troll cave. And Bilbo's shadow while escaping the goblin tunnels. One correction: 626: Thorin says "It cannot be." The same exact thing Aragorn says in TTT under the same circumstances --- seeing someone he thinks has died standing right in front of him.
