"Kicks In Door!* It's FIESTA FRIDAY!! Can't Post

Greetings One and All on this eve of a rodent-driven weekend! I'll be your bartender for the day whilst our lovely Altaira is away.

For those of us who are in the thick of winter, February 2nd is a day that will foretell when Spring will finally arrive. Steeped in history, Groundhog Day is one that I can't wait for! Here's hoping for a cloudy day so there's no Shadow to chase Punxsutawney Phil back into his hidey-hole.

So what'll you have to toast an early Spring? Tell us about your week looking back and your weekend looking ahead.

*slams jukebox* The Groundhog Day Song

Time for another update! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll try to keep this one a little more brief. Probably not though ;-) Thank you for everyone's good wishes in my original leaving thread. I meant to thank you all last week for such kind words, but forgot in my haste to post an update. So thank you :-)

Since last week we have got some good results. We're releasing a weather balloon everday at 12 GMT. We've had one intensive campaign where we released 5 sondes in one day (09, 12, 15, 18, 21 GMT) when the wind direction was favourable for strong winds and waves in the atmosphere. Unfortunetly, that has been the only appropriate day for what we're looking at. For my PhD, I have gone through 10 years worth of automatic weather station data here at King Edward Point. It has *never* been this calm before. The wind has either been from the north, south or east, which is absolutely no good for us! Because South Georgia runs (roughly) from the NW to SE, ideally, we would like SW winds (since they're perpendicular to the mountain chain, and therefore have a greater interaction with the topography of the island). Even westerly winds would be good for us. I'm looking at the dynamics and occurence of foehn winds on the island. From my previous analysis, I found that foehn winds are more common (and more extreme) during the summer months (DJF). On average, there are 10 a month. We've experienced just one foehn event ... and that was a temperature change of just 2degC. Not particularly exciting for my research! Everyone needs to carry on with their bad weather/rain dances for me ;-)

The lidar is also working well, and we have some nice results to complement the balloon data from the intensive campaign. Since the wind has been so calm, we've had lots of practice flying the UAVs (Un-manned aerial vehicles). One has flown into me and we've landed them twice in a river. Oops! Because of the river incidents, we're now having some electrical difficulties. By the time we leave, hopefully we can get some good results. This is all very new, and the first time UAVs have been used for this kind of research. Even if we don't get much data, at least we have shown that they can be used in the future. In 10 years time, I imagine UAVs will replace weather balloons. They're a lot more cost effective, efficient, and can take better measurements of the atmosphere over space and time.

I think it's time for some pictures now!

We hiked to Maiviken yesterday, which is roughly a 2 hour walk from Grytviken. Beautiful place, and somewhere where very few people get to see. About 4 miles from the cove, you could hear the penguins and seals. The beach was covered in fur seal pups, and a colony of penguins. The cove is also surrounded by several (freshwater) lakes, which were also full of pups. It was quite a struggle getting down onto the beach because of the tussock grass. It felt like Jurassic Park - the tussock came to the top of my head, and all I could hear was the occasional growl and rustling. Great fun though, and some lovely pictures.

And since it's always nice to put a face to a name ... that's me, in front of the penguins. Although ... I wouldn't click, as it might ruin your perception of me ;-)

This is my favourite place on the walk, and of South Georgia so far: link. It has a very Middle-earth feel about it. Perhaps it could be Mirromere? The photo doesn't do it much justice, but the lake was a brilliant blue.

Here are a few more pictures: posing penguins, another view over the cove (towards Cumberland West Bay), seal pup playing in rock pool, and an albatross and seal pup

My time here is nearly over. We leave next Thursday, and head back to the Falklands. I've had an awesome time here, and it's a beautiful place. I'll be sad to leave, but incredibly happy that I got to see it all. My next update may be delayed, and I hope the sea is calm on the journey back to the Falklands.

Hmmm ... so that wasn't brief at all in the end! I hope everyone is well, and you all have a great weekend - whatever you get up to. Forget Groundhog Day, it's my birthday tomorrow! :-)

The winds came here [In reply to] Can't Post

Yesterday there were gusts up to 100 km/h, with sustained winds of 50 to 60 km/h.

Also in the past 36 hours the temperature has swung from -14C to +9C and back to -9C.

Will you be able to do something about this crazy weather after you graduate? You'll be a weather doctor right?

(Good to see you Daniel, thanks for the pictures!)

PS should we be concerned that there's very little snow there? I understand you are on an island off mainland Antarctica, but this isn't how I've imagined the place at all. It is beautiful though!

To call these "breathtaking" just doesn't do them justice. [In reply to] Can't Post

Daniel, what an incredibly beautiful place you are at! It reminds of northern Scotland, and the Hebrides, and Iceland: rugged, unspoiled beauty. Icebergs in the coves. (That water must be a bit chilly!) Sharp, uneroded hills. An albatross and a seal pup, letting you take their picture together!

Thank you, and I hope these last few days give you "favorable" winds! Smile Safe journeys!

No need for concern (not yet, anyway ...) [In reply to] Can't Post

It's quite normal for there to be no snow at this time of year. I'm on the east side of the island, and while there is little snow here, the interior of the island is frozen solid. During winter, the whole island is covered in snow. Glaciers are melting at a faster rate though. That'll be more concerning in the future, if they carry on.

Funnily enough, after my last update, we had ~10-20 cm of snow over night. Yesterday it had fully melted. When I have a better internet connection, I can show the snow-y pictures then. From my window now, I can see the snow covered mountains.

The weather doesn't seem too good where you are SirD. 100km/h gusts?! Stay safe.

Smile

Hmm, how about some hot tea today, gramma - got any Rooibos behind the bar, or Constant Comment? WIth a nice dollop of local honey, please! I've got a cough lingering over from a cold last weekend. Tongue

We had some stiff winds here yesterday - even had a school opening delay, there were so many branches down on the roads, and this town had half the electricity out.

So how much snow do you have on the ground now at your house? I've heard that the UP (upper peninsula) is a snow-lover's heaven! Laugh

Well, my door project is moving along [In reply to] Can't Post

I've posted about my door project last September, and not much has happened since then. I had a bunch of out-of-town travel, then the holidays, so I'm finally getting back into it.

My doors are stripped and sanded and ready to be hung. Last month I went to this wonderful antique store, Jan's Antiques in Chicago, and found all my door hardware - hinges, door plates, door knobs and latches. It took a couple trips, partly because the store is freezing - it's a huge warehouse, and January in Chicago means frigid temperatures, so the warehouse never really warms up. But I got everything I needed, including a beautiful 1890 door plate. I'll take pictures of my hardware and post them over the weekend.

This past week I had a contractor come in to figure out how much it's going to cost to have the door frames built and hang the doors. Two of the openings are wider than the doors, so we have to narrow the opening before the frame goes in. This means framing, drywall, baseboards and paint. But one opening is fine - just needs framing and a little touch-up painting.

I've decided to go with one door right now, and the two others later. I'm doing the "easier" project - the one where the opening is the right size. I'll do the other two later - but they are much bigger projects so I want to do this in stages. By finishing the one door, my condo becomes a legal three-bedroom unit, and that will give me an easier path toward re-financing my mortgage.

I have to find a transom to go over the top since I have really high ceilings and the door is standard height. I want a vintage stained glass transom, so I've been scouring e-bay and I might need another trip to Jan's. She has dozens and dozens of windows, so I'm sure I can find something there.

Phase I will be done in a couple weeks - I'm so excited! I'll be sure to post pictures once my beautiful door is finished.

In honor of this achievement, I'd love a glass of single-malt scotch. Have a good weekend, everyone!

And I've been in and out of TORn all morning, as usual, perusing the messages.... Ah well. Hopefully gramma won't give me a demerit for running in late.

I'm pleased to report that the Gaffer is much, much better after his bout with the flu last week (he had a flu shot last fall, but it got him anyway) and I didn't catch it from him, so all is well at Bag End Texas, including a lovely sunny (if chilly) day.

We have no particular plans for the weekend, since he's still recuperating, except for watching both the Super Bowl and Downton Abbey on Sunday, a juxtaposition that may make our heads explode. (Cora breaks from the huddle and runs for the goal line, but is tackled by Mrs. Hughes on the twenty...)

Ahem Tongue

Anyway, we're cheering for the Ravens, for no other reason than that I have to support a team named for a poem Smile

I'll grab myself an Irish coffee and get back to, uh, well, not necessarily any good, I'm afraid. Have a good one gramma and 'sibs!

Amazing photos--makes me want to pick up and go somewhere right now! [In reply to] Can't Post

It also makes me wish I could go back and re-visit my college/grad school days, and do it over with something much, much cooler than what I did. Of course, I have a sense that college and grad school today involves way more travel to interesting, exotic places than when I went (my trips tended to be to a bar). So enjoy this while you can--it gets tougher to get out there in the world once you're out.

I am, however, planning to head to NZ in early November (before the premiere, paradoxically, to avoid crowds). It just took a little while to get there....

Actually, rabbits aren't rodents, but that line made me think of a weekend being propelled along by a bunny sled. Okay, yes, I need to get more sleep...

Blistering hot here these past few weeks, barely a smidgen of rain in sight, grass going brown everywhere -- this is the hottest by far summer since I've been in NZ -- it actually feels like *summer*, and more like summer in New Mexico than those misty cool summers of Puget Sound. I've been having to water my chickens on hot days like today -- and I don't mean giving them fresh water (which of course they already have), I mean *watering* them like you'd water a lawn, hosing them down to cool them off! The free-ranging ones don't stay put for long when it starts "raining", but my hen with 11 chicks is in a pen that gets pretty hot, and she seems to appreciate being watered.

And if you wonder why Ro isn't getting much sleep these days, here's a typical night for us:

10:00 pm : Eldarion finally gives up ("I'M NOT SLEEPY!!!" he says) and falls asleep, right around complete dark.
12:00 am : We finally head to bed, after finishing evening chores and indulging (in my case, anyways) in some TORn or other Hobbity goodness.
3:30 am : The 17-year-old cat, who sleeps in a corner in our room, and who is well-known for not using a litterbox, starts crinkling crinkly things on our floor. That can only mean one thing...I leap out of bed, try to find her before she scoots under the bed, grab her (if I'm lucky) and either chuck her in the laundry room or outside.
4:30 am : They 14-year-old, senile, mostly-deaf dog starts barking inanely from the laundry room for her breakfast. Mr. Ro gets kicked out of bed to put her out and feed her to shut her up.
4:45 am : The rooster in the laundry room (don't ask) starts crowing.
4:48 am : The other 5 roosters (outside) start crowing. This crowing continues for the next several hours.
5:15 am : One young cat comes tearing into our room, leaps onto the small garbage can, and begins disembowling it. She continues strewing its contents about until someone lets her out.
6:30 am : NZ Toddler wakes up and hollers. She then joins us in bed and consents to lay still with us for about 15 minutes, after which she's up for a rousing game of "face".
6:45 am : The old dog has forgotten she had breakfast already, and (from outside this time) starts barking inanely again. She won't hush until she's had second breakfast, or she forgets why she's barking.
6:55 am : There's no point in trying to pretend any longer. We're up. *yawwn*

However, I sold two roosters today, so down to four -- yay! -- unfortunately still have the one in the laundry room.

Anyways, I hope everyone else's lives are a bit more peaceful!

Oh, and The Hobbit leaves our theaters after Tuesday...sadness!!!...I'm going to try to go one last time. Can't wait for the DVD, but it's never the same as seeing it in all its glory on the big screen.

Happy weekend, all!

And I can't believe you're almost on your way home - it doesn't seem like any time at all. But what a wonderful place, and what an adventure, even if the winds aren't playing fair.

Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your time there.

I seem to not make it here until Saturday these days. I worked yesterday & had a doctor appointment, also. Hopefully I ' ll get my wrist fixed with the surgery I'm having done. No big plans for the weekend other than grocery shopping & house cleaning. We are short-staffed at work right now so I've been picking up some extra hours.

Happy weekend all!

Go Ravens! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've got an Irish Coffee for the Gaffer, too. I'm so glad he's feeling better :) From what I've heard, those flu shots won't save you from getting sick, but minimize the impact. To me, getting a shot should mean "FORCE FIELD" and safety from getting sick.

My son-in-law is a HUGE Baltimore Ravens fan. He's very non-demanding, hard working and a great husband and step-father... so everyone gives him all the space and time he needs to enjoy his Ravens. I mean... it's the yelling at the tv, jumping up and down, frothing fandom going on for this very easy-going, accommodating guy. :D He's a riot to watch! So I'm definitely rooting for the Ravens in honour of my new son.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend, m'dear! Don't YOU get sick!

And do we want to know why you're keeping a rooster in there?

Complete sympathy from me, been there & done that when the kids were little and the pets were aged (or in the kitty/puppy stage). Tongue

The movie leaves Tuesday? That mean's you'll have time for only 3 or 4 more viewings! Angelic

Just big enough. [In reply to] Can't Post

Big enough for my mealworm colony, the old dog at night, and variously the younger dog, a cat or two, and now the rooster at night too. Oh, and Mr. Ro's laundry table. The thing he liked best about this house was that there was room in the laundry room for his laundry table. Me, I like how many critters I can fit in there!

Daisy the rooster is living in/by the house right now as he came down a bit sick a couple of weeks ago, got attacked by the younger rooster, and clearly needed some time apart to heal and recover. Coming inside at night helps keep him warm, which should speed recovery; he's also been to the vet and had a round of antibiotics (didn't seem to help much). Most people think I'm crazy for taking a rooster to the vet, and then for bringing him in at night, but he really is a very gentle sweet giant of a rooster, and we all like him alot... (yes, he was supposed to be a hen, hence the name).

Yes, old animals are just as much work as baby ones, only old age seems to last a lot longer! I don't think I've slept through the night in nearly 8 years. I think I've forgotten how.

Wish I could go see AUJ three times in its last three days...we live too far away from the theaters, and with the boys home on summer break (they start back to school tomorrow), and my mom living with us right now, there's too many complications for me to sneak out!

My mom's helpful comment when Mr. Ro and I wanted to go see it -- together (gasp!) and in the evening (double gasp! an evening out!!!) -- was, "Well, why don't you just move into the theater for a week?" Sigh. I love her, and she's a great help, but why does she have to be with us right now, when there's this fantastic movie to geek out over that we've been waiting years for?

The doctor [In reply to] Can't Post

doesn't know what it is but I've had the problem/pain for almost twenty years. I've worked at a computer my whole life so I'm sure it's repetitive motion related. The surgery I'm having done doesn't fix the problem. They just cut a couple of nerves that transfer pain to my brain. It's possible it won't work but I'm going to give it a try.

Where exactly [In reply to] Can't Post

is the pain located - and do you ever get a tingling, or numbness?

I also do a lot of computer work, and had a problem in my right hand, but now control it with regular massage therapy (it was all the knotted back muscles affecting the arm nerves).

No tingling or numbness [In reply to] Can't Post

I've done the symptom thing on line & it didn't match up with anything. The massage is a great idea-I've said for years how much my manicures help with the pain. How often do you go & how expensive is it? Does insurance cover it?

Manicures! [In reply to] Can't Post

It makes sense that that would help, as you're getting the small muscles and nerves in the fingers "worked on"!

I visit my massage therapist every 5-6 weeks, for "maintenance", as we like to call it - her opening line is always, Okay, where it hurting this time! Laugh (Along with tight back muscles, she works on leg tendons which never developed properly, and between sessions she's got me doing exercises for problems associated with those.)

Here, the cost is $40/half hour, $75 full hour. She doesn't accept insurance, so you'd have to apply for reimbursement - usually a doctor's note stating that the therapy is helpful is all you need. But other therapists do take insurance, so check around!

I would be very careful. [In reply to] Can't Post

Cutting those nerves deals only with the symptom end and not the root cause.

An enormous thrush in my mind is making an alarming raucous screaming 2nd opinion here.

Sherlock have you pursued one? Dernwyn is one of the smartest people i know and she, plus me think rehab is something to pursue in earnest.

Massage is good but then there is deep tissue massage also. All my latter years have been devoted to finding a doctor to resolve the chronic painful areas and areas prone to re-injury that i have accumulated over the years from being so extremely physical.

Thankfully by word of mouth i found him. He is a chiropractor AND a deep tissue therapist. One note here i have tried a variety of chiropractors and never had noticeable results. They are truly not all the same.

Since going to him for more than a year, so many areas have been 'released' from 'lesions' or scar tissue (which is inflexible). I feel amazing overall. This is a route i would consider. I can hear my doctor freaking out if he heard about this story of yours.

It is just my way to be dead straight and candid. I fear some things, like what you are considering, something that cannot be undone.

Two things more; [In reply to] Can't Post

If you find a 'combination' doctor such as this, most insurance plans cover chiropractic with a 20 dollar co-pay each visit. And if he/she is worth their salt, only a few will be necessary.

The other thing is my doctor is a highly skilled water skier and mountain biker in his young 50's. His daughter works on him. That's another story:).

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

I've also got a job that requires a lot of repetitive motion and can develop issues in my elbow and wrist. When they are bothering me, I have my chiropractor adjust those as well as my neck and back when I see him, and it really helps.

And massages are always a good idea. Cool

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."
