On hair hijacking and Thorinitis in general

yeah, I'm with you on this one. I never thought about it, but I think you're right that Thorin probably appeals to an older age bracket (such as myself, for example). And Fili and Kili probably to a younger one. And although we may talk endlessly and happily about his glorious hair, it's more about how he presents himself, as you put it. He has a bearing that sets him apart from the other dwarves. Besides his table manners, the tone of his voice and his overall good looks, he has an air of quiet confidence as of one who is used to being in charge without being overbearing or arrogant; one who leads by example, who others follow not because they have to, but because they want to (reflecting on Balin's words, "Here is one I could follow. Here is one I could call King.") His little talk with Balin about why the others came when he called shows, to me, what he values even more than fighting skills - loyalty, honor, a willing heart. What's not to love about this guy? (At least in this film!) Okay. You can now return to your regularly scheduled programming! Sorry for this diversion....had to have my Thorin Moment for the day!

Well done for that! Excellent observations roheryn I hope you can talk Mr Ro in to one more as i may ask Mrs andwise to allow one last one as for the necromancer issue, whether its A necromancer or THE necromancer I suppose it may have been considered too complicated or time consuming to explain where the name came from and who gave it to him...not sure, don't think it matters too much......I DO know though, that when I was 17 I was going to call my thrash metal band necromancer-sourced from the hobbit-and write it on our debut album cover using the same font as 'hawk the slayer'was written in......it never came to pass

It does not seem to me that we need to consider that Radagast's first appearance occurs, timewise, simultaneously with Gandalf's first mention of him. Gandalf describes him as being a guardian over the Greenwood, and so I took the subsequent scene to be an illustration of Gandalf's words, but not necessarily taking place simultaneously. It could have been earlier, but showing him in real time (say, fording the River Isen with his bunnies, or whatever other thing he might have been doing at that precise time) would not be showing us what Gandalf is telling us about him.

Is there a photo of the hair clip?

I never noticed the hair clip when I watched the movies, but I've been curious how Thorin keeps his hair out of his face and wondered if it was an artifact of having a wig that wouldn't work with real hair. I would love to see a picture of it, as I've been thinking of trying out Thorin's hair style myself. It's possible mine is too thick and curly/wavy for it to work, but it's worth a try. It's about the same length as Thorin's I think, and my beard is roughly the same length as his as well right now.

Those guys are wearing a lot of padding, and I don't think that would translate to seeing much skin. Unfortunately. Whoa. Just imagine Thorin's wet hair... I'm sure Phillipa worked hard for us grrls. both all the hot men in LOTR and AUJ as well as everyone's responses here and all the hair threads. i don't think i ever grew out of my liking long scruffy hair and a rugged man who could really save your life in a crisis. sigh. and i still want that hair clip!

not sure about any photos online but Fili has two small ones in his beard and Thorin has two low on the back area and Kili has one high up in the back. you catch glimpses of them in the films. they'd go so perfectly in my hair.

In this picture, you can clearly see Thorin with two braids in his hair, each tied with a silver thing at the end. Fili has them for his moustache and brains in his hair as well, while Kili doesn't seem to have any http://heirsofdurin.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/heirs-trio.jpg Are the clips we're talking about different from these and not pictured in this photo? Something to hold the hair in the back?

I am sure we'd all be delighted to see a photo of you. I bet you'd make a great addition to a local RenFaire with your long locks and beard! And RA must have found that long hair annoying. In the scene right after killing that warg (during the pre-Rivendell chase), you can see a lock of hair right across his eyes as they starting running away. I know that would drive ME crazy!

Similar style, but they're bigger, and the three royals use them to pull back a large handful of hair, in the back (so you can't see them from the front). I'm actually not sure Thorin always has one, but he does at least sometimes.
