This is probably the best one yet; like your reference about Azog saying he reeked of fear like his father. Question is if Thrain ran off in the Battle by Moria, how did Thorin end up finding his father, and why does Thorin only refer to his Grandfather and not talk about his own dad?
Still I like the idea of the intro being a shot of Dol Guldur and seeing Azog and Bolg (with a small pack of orcs) torturing Thrain, and then Gandalf scaring the orcs to save Thrain (hence the whole 'I thought Dol Guldur was abandoned; heck they can even show Gandalf taking a short look around before he leaves). He then tends to Thrain, who with his dying breath gives the key and map, and whispers 'Thorin'.
This ties up the plot holes of 1.) Thrain revealed Thorin is alive in his torture, hence Azog's pursuit, and 2.) why Gandalf looked shocked when Radagast revealed of his findings in Dol Guldur since Gandalf thought he cleared that place out.

Since Ian McKellen said that such a scene was filmed, and I'd rather it not be included in the extended edition of AUJ, I'd say throw it at the start of film two. I think it's smartest to stick to keeping an upbeat nature to the openings. I'd personally find it strange to see the opening 'Hobbit' title card against the Concerning Hobbits cue and then go to something grim like Dol Guldur. First and foremost, this is a more traditional fantasy story for children. There's time to scare them senseless later on.

FotR - Sauron tries to destroy Middle Earth, is defeated, but then the ring is lost and goes to Bilbo
TTT - Gandalf fighting Balrog as he's falling
RotK - How Smeagol becomes Gollum
AUJ - How the dwarves are killed and run out of their own kingdom by a dragon
...if anything, I think all of the openings answer important questions about the plot, while setting up the events of the film. I guess the best way to describe them would be as prologues.

Go get season 8 of MI-5. One of the early episodes where his character's torturer (RA's character, Lucas North, was imprisoned for 8 years in a Russian prison) turns up in England. Let's just say you get to see ALL the tattoos that he seemed to have acquired during his incarceration also. *blushes just thinking about it*

Not the book that I read anyway. I know we're getting far more than the book, but that doesn't make those things actually a part of the story.
Like I said, I'd like to see the forging of the rings in the LOTR movies - where I feel it belongs.
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

I tend to go along with the idea that we'll go back to Thrain and Gandalf's meeting. It's important to both the plot of The Hobbit, and the subplot of the Necromancer. It also helps set up Gandalf's departure from the company.
As far as Beorn/goblin/warg torture scenes go, I think someone needs to think of the children here...
Gollum's torture scene was handled almost off-screen.

and I also wasn't referring to the Erebor sequence, but moreso Bilbo in Bag End preparing to write the story, and the overall attitude of the movie you get right from the get-go. I'd even consider RotK's prologue in line with what I'm saying. Sure, it follows through with a murder scene, but the initial sensation is far more cheerful than the 'melancholy' (for lack of a better term) of the first two. It's just my preference, and I'm sure I won't care how it starts when the time comes, but if I can only have it one way it'd be away from Dol Guldur and more focused on Bilbo.

I've not been impressed with the white council material. But whether or not it impressed me doesn't negate the fact that it's not a part of the story of the book. I'm glad many people are enjoying this adaptation, but it's not doing it for me.

Don't worry about what kids will think....if the movies were made for kids they wouldn't make near the money they do....or be entertaining in my opinion.

There it is: dwarves are not heroes, but calculating folk with a great idea of the value of money; some are tricky and treacherous and pretty bad lots; some are not, but are decent enough people like Thorin and Company, if you don't expect too much.

Yep i was entertained (because it wasn't child tailored) BUT I think your backwards here. Children aren't pulling parents to the movie ill bet (obviously there is outliers). Parents aren't "shelling" out money for their kids to see it....Parents are shelling out money so THEY can see it (thanks to the mostly non-childish tone). Watch the trailers again.... they are pretty serious.

You've got a point, unless you've got kids who actually have read the Hobbit without their parents introducing them to it. However most of the parents I know ARE taking their kids to see it (and seeing it themselves :)

The Hobbiton flashback with Gandalf and the Old Took and Belladonna Baggins with her adorable chubby little son (Bilbo), excited about Gandalf's stories about Dragons and clapping at fireworks...then back into "present day" with Bilbo wistfully longing for home and the tea-kettle and wishing he had never met Gandalf.
