Have you seen TH:AUJ yet? Can't Post

Here it is, The Hobbit has opened in most (if not all) markets around the globe; in some markets it is into the 4th week of wide release.

So, have you seen it yet? If not, do you plan/hope to?

Yes, once [In reply to] Can't Post

I've not yet seen the HFR, partly because it's 2 hours to the nearest theater with it, and partly because I don't have an overwhelming desire to see it again. I'm thinking if I see it again, it'll only be in 2D here in town, and I'll save HFR for film two.

I can answer that question [In reply to] Can't Post

I am often interested in the discussion around a poll, but not the poll itself. I hardly ever vote in these, simply because I can't be bothered. Terrible, I know.

I will answer the question though: I've seen it twice. The first time was with all the bells and whistles, the second time in 2D. I loved it both times, but when I go again it will be for the 2D version. I'm not sure if I can articulate exactly why, but I found the 2D a more satisfying experience.

PS: Who is the scary moon-faced dude with grasping little stick arms?

I would really, really like to see it on the big screen, whatever format, but I'll probably have to wait for the DVD. But then again, considering what I've read about bird poo in Radagast's hair, etc. maybe the small screen isn't such a bad thing? Tongue

I'm a full-time care giver for my dad who is bed-bound. My dad wouldn't mind me being gone for a few hours to see a movie; I go two or three time a week to run errands and am gone for roughly the same amount of time, but I know if I weren't doing something active, I'd be sitting there worrying.

We are going today to see it again. We would have seen it again sooner if it hadn't been for the snow. When we were going to see the LOTR movies, we didn't let snow bother us, but then, we were a decade younger!

To answer your other question: I sometimes vote just to see what the vote totals are because I am actually not that interested in the topic.

In other words: give yourself a "mental health break" and ask someone to stay with your dad for a few hours while you go see the movie - and afterwards, you can tell him all about it! Cool

You really should go [In reply to] Can't Post

I wholeheartedly agree with what Dernwyn wrote on this head! If he's not in immediate danger of dying suddenly at any moment now, and if you have a trustworthy person to substitute for you for the four hours or so that it will require, you really ought to do this for your own sake. It will do you good and perhaps give you a little boost of positive energy, and that will have a positive effect on your caring for your father.

And never mind the bird poo! There are some things I really don't like at all about this movie, but I've seen it four times so far and always left the cinema with a smile on my face and a feeling of glowing inside. Despite its flaws, the film makes me happy! It's just so enchanting to be back in Middle-earth!

okay, you are using Basic Editor and my instructions are for Advanced Editor [In reply to] Can't Post

To do this in basic editor:

look below compose window for "Choose file" and click it.

This opens a pop up window that shows your harddrive. Navigate to the image. I think it's best (and may be necessary, but I'm not testing) that there not be any spaces in the name.

Choose the image (which puts the file name in the field next to 'Choose file') and tick the 'inline' box.

Click "Upload attachment"

When that's done, you'll see that file name under you compose window with the size of the file (KB) and the inline box is ticked. If you forgot to tick it, tick it now.

Then write this code where you want your image to appear:

[inline nameofimage.gif]

replace 'nameofimage.gif' with the name and file extension of the image you want to show. If the file extension on your image is jpg, then you use jpg. You can just copy and paste whatever shows under your compose window.

If you don't see a row of tools along the top of your compose window... [In reply to] Can't Post

then you don't have Advanced Editor.

It's my understanding that AE is not available for Safari or Chrome (which I use).

For help with code in Basic Editor - find a link above your compose window that says, "Get Markup Help"

This will show you how to do all sorts of things: bold, italics, indent, quote, and clickable urls.

For extensive formatting, I go to Firefox where I can access Advanced Editor.

Starling's right... that's Basic Editor [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm curious where you see the label/words: 'Advanced Editor'

Basic editor is, in some ways, a pain. But it's actually beneficial in other ways. It doesn't let formatting code wander in when you copy and paste something from another source. That's good.

And I'm not sure it take much more work to type nine characters than make a clickable url than it does to highlight text, click a button, paste a link in the pop up window, make sure you erase the http://, the click okay.

It is easier to do a lot of formatting with Advanced Editor and easier to do certain kinds of formatting (colors or font style, for example). But it's my experience that the more formatting you load into a post, the more problems you're likely to encounter with things going awry. It's best to keep it fairly simple.

But that is what my display is set to. Since I use Safari, I was showing you what it looks like for anyone else who uses Safari. You confused me when you said that advanced will let you do things like urls, bold, italics, etc., when what I use already has those few features.

This is where I see "Advanced Editor"

I imagine now that if I log onto TORn on another computer and use Firefox that advanced editor will automatically turn on, but since I'm using Safari on my Mac it reverts to basic. I have no desire to change it. It works wonderfully for me for what I need to do - quotes, italics, urls (and now pictures!).

Thanks for all your help (and Starling's expert advice to dump Safari!). I hope I haven't caused too much confusion.

Being busy and a little broke has been a factor, yes... but I actually drove by a theatre in time to get in (the short) line for the early (10pm) release on December 12. I had the time and the money just then, but decided against it. I've not felt the urge to see it since.

The first reason is because some of the things that happened during the production were unethical, to me profoundly so. As such, I did not want to support the production lest I feel as an hypocrite. However, since many people whom I admire have seen it with a clear conscience, that's good enough for me.

Also at some point I realized that the LOTR movies and people and things related to the movies had become like idols to me. I wanted to prove to myself that was no longer the case -- I am now satisfied that they are not.

Lately, as in just in the last couple days, I've decided that I should see the film, if for no other reason than to be able to keep up with discussions with my friends. I mean even some people who hated LOTR went to see AUJ so they would have informed opinions about it (and some of them even found it to their liking). In any case, if I do end up seeing it this week (I don't think it's going to hang around too much longer) it is more out of curiosity than it is desire. I'm okay with that.

(For the record it is still on at two multiplexes here: at one, which literally was just built for TH opening, it is only available in HFR IMAX and HFR 3D; at the other it is available in 3D and 2D. Haven't decided which version to see. If I only see it once, which is likely to be the case, I kind of want to see it in 2D to eliminate the possibility that HFR 3D won't agree with me. On the other hand, purely so I have a basis of comparison, I might choose HFR 3D.)

Now I have to ask, how do you feel knowing you have missed the theatrical release?

Well Sir Dennis [In reply to] Can't Post

For what it's worth, I initially didn't want to see The Hobbit, but I am glad now that I did.
But, further to some of our other conversations, you might find this interesting. Questioning the "100% Pure NZ" campaign is not a popular thing to do it seems.
Public Address is a great site. They have done some really interesting coverage of the earthquakes and the ongoing issues with insurance, if you feel like trawling through the archives.

I hope you do see The Hobbit and find yourself able to let go of all that other stuff for a few hours. I was delighted to find that this was what happened to me. The moment the titles came up on the screen, something lovely happened.

And I'm working on finishing up my contributions to the geeky observation list asap!

Maybe if I stopped going to the movies ;)

Actually, I'm going as often as I can because my theatre manager told me they can only promise it will still be here until January 10th. *checks calendar* TIME is running out!

The big AMC [In reply to] Can't Post

has changed now to an Empire. I saw it both times there......I chose both times to avoid the 3D and IMAX. I'm don't need all those big deals that the kids love so much! lol.
I haven't seen an IMAX film in years....but....I'm not that drawn to it. 3D is not my style at all. I am going a third time near the end of the month....I should have a better idea of what I really think by then... I hope! But will probably change when all three are out.

I see that you have seen TH since posting this [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm glad that Starling was able to allay your reservations about the ethical issues, and that you were able to finally see TH. But I admire you for being prepared to forgo something you've been looking forward to for so long had that not been the case. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the issues. I've been a bit of a moral coward; whenever I sensed any controversy in a thread, I just moved on. My thinking was that there was probably no way to know what's true or not, so just moved on. But I guess that's just sticking my head in the sand. Unsure

I kind of understand what you mean about wanting to prove that LOTR related things didn't have a hold over you. When the first two LOTR films came out, I really lost myself in them; they were like a refuge from real life. I felt like I was hiding from my life, or lack thereof, in ME. But when ROTK came out, I was living and teaching in Poland, having the time of my life. I still enjoyed ROTK, but it wasn't an escape, just entertainment. However, I credit LOTR, in part, for motivating me to make that giant change in my life.

As for me missing the theatrical release, I'm used to missing out on the big movie events. (I really don't mean to sound self-pityingTongue) It would have been wonderful to see Middle Earth on the big screen again, but the time between theatrical release and DVD release seems to get shorter and shorter, so I won't have long to wait to see it on the little screen. And then, I can join in on the discussions!!! Smile

Thank you for the thoughtful reply [In reply to] Can't Post

Zara, if it's any consolation, I do not think this is a movie that *has to be seen on the big screen* -- unless you are interested in IMAX etc -- so really it's just a matter of waiting a little while longer, as you say.

... it is still a noble thing you are doing, which of course is the main consolation.

oh honey . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

please please please find a "respite care" worker who can come in for a few hours a week and give you a break. If not you will burn out and be of no use to your dad at all. I'm serious: I know someone who was so stressed by being the only caregiver that she ended up in the hospital - and you can imagine what a crisis that was all around. There are folks who do this kind of thing for a living, and if you are in the US and your dad is over 65, Medicare will pay for it.

Great discussion(s)!

In terms of voter participation, this poll has the highest number of votes of any I remember seeing over the past 4 years. The total number of votes is a nice round 111, a good number of responses with which to genralize/extrapolate.

Again, thank you!

It was in 2D, so after seeing the movie in all formats, I can say that my 2nd and 3rd viewings in 48fps are my favourite.

Saw it again, this time in IMAX 3D [In reply to] Can't Post

not sure if it was HFR though. The CGI looked more realistic for most things (the Great Goblin and the wargs were not noticeably better, though Azog looked much better), though I found if I did not hold my head perfectly still and in a certain position that the image broke quickly.

I saw it last night, finally. We've conspired for me to take Elboron on the last day of Hannuka as a surprise, unless he misbehaves - which he did. And last week we were snowed in. Well, well.
My main concern was that watching a 3-D film of three hours will strain my unused eyes, and I will be too tired to drive back. But I've managed.

I think if you log out of your TORn account and then visit the poll you will be allowed to vote as a guest... I was thinking of doing the same thing since my vote has changed twice. (I'm as surprised as anyone.)

Snowed in? You must be in the mountains... This has been a crazy winter. I hope it was as romantic as it sounds.

edit: I just tried it and indeed you can vote again as a guest -- but only once as a guest from the same IP address I think.
