How did you welcome the arrival of 2013?

My answer is #7 - usually the neighbors set off fireworks, we wake up and mumble Happy New Year and go back to sleep. Those neighbors must have moved...

at the neighbours who let off fireworks from 11am to 1am, each new lot starting just as I was drifting off; then at the meathead who roared his car around the streets doing wheelies; then at the two earthquakes after 3am. 2013 really didn't want me to get much sleep that night.

I went to visit my parents who both took a big ol' nap before midnight while I borrowed my mother's laptop to visit TORn and other sites of interest.

It was a typical New Year's Eve for us. With only one of our three adult kids at home, we headed over to the local Olive Garden for an early dinner out (they have delicious soups and reasonable portions there). Then back home to play a game, this year we did a couple rounds of Monopoly Millionaire Deal card game - new to us, and like a quick version of Monopoly. After which we knew none of us would hold out until midnight! I fell asleep reading a book about Durham Castle. Have you ever noticed that if you start dozing off while reading about something, the subject matter tends to enter your dreams? I have vague remembrances of brief dreams with something about Cuthbert and the Danish invasions of Northumberland...

OhioHobbit and I watched an old James Bond movie and went to bed at 9:30 p.m. I slept all night (neighbors were quiet this year -- I guess they are getting older, too) so I missed the midnight arrival of 2013.

How come you weren't with you or your girlfriends family? Well i am sure it was fun on TORn nevertheless! As for myself it was just a small gathering at gf of her family, then at midnight we set off some lanterns into the sky with messages we had wrote on them for the coming year.

For my family we never really made that big a deal out of it. In fact the best thing was we had a big meal on new years day which was basically Christmas dinner again - mum loves this time of year, haha. But as i wasnt there that didnt happen My uncle went to Sydney and got a boat out into the harbour for the fireworks there - said it was the best new years eve party ever! One day... lol.

took my daughter. My granddaughter was upset that we went without her but as she was moving from airport to airport (texting us every time she got on, off or just got bored waiting for the next flight) returning from a visit with her dad it was unavoidable. I suppose I'll just have to go again to keep her company.

We had Mr. Eruvande's parents over for dinner, including black eyed peas, and played pool and the xbox in our new man cave. At 11 pm, central time, we decided it was midnight in New York and that was good enough for us. We had some nasty dry champagne, and the Little Eruvandes had sparkling apple cider. I'd rather have the apple cider, really. Yes we are party animals. Do not try this at home.

We've made New Year's a family celebration for a long time. The tradition is to play Fictionary at my dad's house. We've been saving the papers for decades, and they make fun reading. The best word I learned this year was "tsimmes: the over-complication of a relatively simple situation (also a stew of vegetables and fruits)" This year we also played Apples to Apples. Our kids are grown and went to parties of their own, and my sister was away at a party of her own, but my out-of-state brother was visiting, so he and my dad and Uncle Baggins and I got together for a low-key party. We came home at 11, wanting to avoid the drunks, and set off a fireworks fountain at our house.
