Obviously we can't judge Legolas yet, but there were six major characters from Lord of the Rings who returned for An Unexpected Journey, each of them portrayed again by the same actor.
Which was your favorite?

You guys are supposed to help me figure it out! 
It's a little unfair, too, given how much more screentime Gandalf gets compared to the others. He's in a starring role, while everyone else is supporting.
Galadriel was my favorite of the supporting cast, while I also loved Gandalf. I believe my favorite Galadriel moments of the four films were the gift-giving scene in FOTREE and her scenes in Rivendell in AUJ. Perfect.

I'm afraid Gandalf is just Gandalf, and no other Tolkien character comes close to him for me. Of course, Ian McKellen's Gandalf is the perfect Gandalf (I think almost everyone can agree on that).
Galadriel had a much lighter side to her in this film, which was nice to see. Didn't care much for seeing Frodo again, was a little pointless I felt. Saruman was developed nicely though.
One small quibble though (with the best of intentions I promise): Gollum, arguably the next most crucial member of the returning characters after Gandalf, is not on this list.

Ack!
Gollum should have been included. And Sauron is arguable, but since he's not played by the same actor, I would leave him out. I'm also ok leaving out The Witch King.
And now I can't devide between Gollum, Galadriel, and Gandalf. Tolkien sure liked the letter 'g', didn't he?

Yes I don't know what it is about the letter g, but whether by coincidence or not an awful lot of characters of his end up with 'g' names!

But then again, there are no small number of characters in Tolkien, although a good number of major characters have 'g' names.
Also what is it with Wizard's and there possessions having the same letter? (e.g. Gandalf and Glamdring, Radagast and Rhosgobel)

I would probably say Gandalf, only because we see so much of him and a completely different side. We see him being pretty darn jolly during the unexpected party and even taking and placing bets! Definitely in line with the Gandalf of the book, and I loved it.
But Galadriel will always hold a special place of honor because she's simply fantastic, as is Cate.

What about Lindir/Figwit? I'm kidding. I know that's just a glorified cameo, not a true supporting role. But I do love that Elf.
I have to go with Gandalf. As others stated, the deck is unfairly stacked to his advantage since he has a starring role. Ian McKellen just embodies that character so well. Galadriel's more playful side was a lot of fun to see also. And Andy Serkis as Gollum was masterful as always.

Mine is definitely Gollum! Because he's just so creepily convincing... I wish he had been listed. And Lindir too, although I probably wouldn't have voted for him. ; )
So I voted for Saruman, just to show respect to Christopher Lee for still being alive and healthy enough to play Saruman again! That's got to be the longest acting career ever.

There are a few who i think did well, namely Gandalf and Elrond.
I felt Elrond was the most improved over his LOTR character/performance as he captured more of how i feel he is in the books - not permanently moody/frowning with a silly face, but a bit more happy and Elrond like, lol.
For me Galadriel was a little wooden other than the one second of her moving Gandalf's hair, i dont think it helps she is in scenes i think look kinda fake.
Gandalf was i feel brilliant in the LOTR so its hard to top that but i feel he has matched his performance especially as he had a large role again,
Overall i voted for Gandalf as he had the most to do but did it all well.

They're making her into a sort of goddess/sorceress, with all the deference, mind-reading, disappearing, etc.
Saruman came across just right -- no broad hints of treachery, that would make Gandalf into an idiot for trusting him in FotR. And very nice to see him again!
But favorite? Gotta go with Gandalf!

McKellen is just so skilled because of his stage experience, he really draws you in. When I first saw that he'd been cast in the LOTR films, I knew it would be a great set of films.

I've read The Hobbit and LOTR from the time I was 13, and I pictured Elrond so differently than he was in LOTR. He looked about what I pictured, but he was so sullen and didn't support Aragorn because he thought he was "weak" and didn't support Arwen staying with Aragorn because she would be mortal and die. I know the weight of middle earth was on his shoulders, and he was about to lose his daughter, but I always pictured the elves of Lothlorien to be sorrowful and wanting to leave Middle Earth, while the elves of Rivendell were more welcoming and friendly.
Then came The Hobbit movie and I thought, now THERE is Elrond! He is very warm and friendly to the dwarves, even when they so comically look unconfortable to be there.
I just finished watching The Two Towers today because I always watch the trilogy when I am sick (and I have stomach flu) and have the time to watch it; and there is Elrond telling Arwen she will be alone and walk the earth until she is utterly spent, and Arwen is crying and telling him she loves him too, and I'm thinking "I want the Hobbit Elrond back!"
I wish LOTR movie could have done Arwen's bit differently, where Elrond knows that Aragorn will make a good king and supports Arwen creating his standard to carry into battle and their upcoming nuptuals. But, I guess Peter and co. thought that wouldn't be dramatic enough!
Ah well, back to bed, The Return of the King awaits me.

Elrond is a lot friendlier. I could never quite put my finger on why he was my favourite returning character, other than him being Elrond, of course.
It's off-topic, but here's hoping to a young Estel in the Extended Edition!
I hope you get better.

Finishing off The Return of the King last night, I realized just how beautiful and epic these movies are. My friends think I'm crazy for watching all three movies and say they are "too long". But, I don't think they are any longer than 8 Harry Potters, 6 Star Wars, 5 Twilights, 4 Indiana Jones (and a partridge in a pear tree! I know, wrong holiday coming up ) or any other movies. And it isn't even 3 movies, it is one long story. After I watch it, I feel like I've travelled with the fellowship for a year, not a few days, and, like Frodo, it is hard to get used to the cheerfulness of the Shire and get back to an ordinary life after the weariness of war.
But (back to the subject at hand) that is why I also like Frodo and Older Bilbo at the beginning of The Hobbit. I know many wanted to get right into the story, and it is a little jarring to go back to the peace of the Shire after the prologue of the dwarves and men fleeing Smaug, but I think I needed it. To see Bag End, and the trees and the hills and the flowers and my old friends and to feel like, ahh, I'm home again. And of course when Old Bilbo smoking turned into young Bilbo smoking and frowning at the arrival of an annoying visitor (Gandalf!), I settled down into my seat and said to myself, "Yes! We're back! And thus it begins again!" or something like that and I it felt like it was 2001 again and I was 30 and seeing FOTR for the first time (yes, I'm ancient).
Wow, that was one long sentence!

My Aunt and I have a two day marathon of sheer laziness and LotR. And every single time I still begFrodo not to send Sam away.
When I saw Frodo and Older Bilbo again I meeped. The nostalgia is so overwhelming. It reminded me of the first time I had read The Hobbit and how long I had waited for the movie. Seeing Gandalf the Grey is welcoming, too.

And how great is it that we get Gandalf the Grey for two more films!

Even though, technically, he was only, what, several minutes younger? in Elf years. But he was was a more lighthearted, care-free Elrond, wasn't he? Can't wait for more!
