Whoa, so now you get to cut on people?!
I am SMAUG! I kill when I wish! I am strong, strong, STRONG! My armor is like tenfold shields! My teeth like swords! My claws, spears! The shock of my tail, a thunderbolt! My wings, a hurricane! And my breath, death!

But that's been six years ago! The Little Goblin was an infant! Wow, where did that time go?

That is fantastic! Gosh, I remember when you announced that you'd started this whole thing! Wonderful-wonderful, Dr. Annael. I'm so happy for you!

I did all the classes (which involved a five-hour round-trip commute, usually twice a week), did my comps and orals, and even had my abstract approved. Then........... Then I didn't finish it. I suspect that the regret that I feel goes about as deep as the pride you feel for having have perservered. Again, many congrats!!! Keep on celebrating!!

Hi Altaira and everyone, I had to come and join in this pre-Hobbit Fiesta! I have my tickets booked for the first showing, there are 8 of us going, then the day after, Neil and I have the day off work to drive somewhere with a 48fps screen. Very excited. Been trying to avoid all reviews and the Hobbit board as I want to be completely neutral when I go see it. Then I can join in all the fun! Life has been busy as ever, agility competitions with the dogs, (we have started bringing home a few rosettes and trophies now!), work, cakes etc. I am busy this evening baking Christmas Tree giant cupcakes, and some gingerbread. Happy weekend all!

how strange that we both become a Dr in the same week - though different kinds obviously. It was a very surreal feeling knowing that something i had worked on for 6 years has finally come to me passing. As you know i was very nervous about the prospect of being homeless and bankrupt if i had failed. Character building stuff in the end! What are your plans for celebration? Mine are to go out tonight (its evening here now) and celebrate my last day as a student and get drunk for first time in over a year!

I've never done that, but if one were to take place in my area, I'd be tempted. Trying to sit that long would be a problem, though. Enjoy, gramma dear!

I'll put the PhD at the end instead. Since my dad's a physician I do associate "Dr." with medicine, and I'm not that kind of doctor. When a friend said jokingly said "hey doc, I have this pain here . . ." I replied "I can only help you if it's mythic pain." My committee did press me rather hard with their first questions, but then they lightened up. I was surprised that they asked me some personal questions ("how did you, as a woman writer, feel about writing about women writers?"). I would have been terrified to do it after my second year but after my third year and a year spent on my topic, I was quite confident.

stopped when she was writing the conclusion to her dissertation. There's something about finishing that is very hard for people. My brother got to the last quarter of a five-year program and dropped out. My wasband also dropped out at the end of his graduate program. All I can think is that it represents a permanent change and change is very, very scary - even if it might be a good change, it's unknown territory. I do admit to some butterflies over no longer being a grad student working towards a PhD. Now I have to make it mean something! And pay off the student loans

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. new acheron residence: (I think this picture is small enough?) That bush outside the front is gone now though. we're redoing the kitchen this month and moving in in january. As for The Hobbit, I'm not sure yet. Probably over the weekend, but I don't have anyone else to see it with at the moment. Some friends are going to a midnight showing, but I can't make it then, and anyway they're seeing the IMAX 3D HFR version and I can't watch 3D as far as I know. My wife is gone for the weekend but my parents will be in town to watch the baby, so I will be able to go see it sometime, but maybe it will be by myself. Or if any tornsibs are in northern Virginia and want to see a 2D showing on the weekend let me know.

that was the whole point. I'm quite excited about finally getting to the book after all these years. Which, as my niece pointed out, means that I'm far from burnout unlike most people at this point.
