Like what the hell? who authorizes this people to give formal opinion on a movie based only on their subjective point of view. I don't like Tolkien in general? It's not like Harry Potter?? Battlefield fresh, Hobbit rotten??? What kind of arguments are these? I really don't mind a criticism but it needs to come from neutral point of view. what are these people, 8 years old?
PS I know there is a topic about reviews on page 2 currently but i just wanted to open up a topic name.
Although it might get censured by much respected admins :)

I really think this whole avenue is quite fruitless. The existance of critics and the nature of their work can't come as such a revelation to anyone I'm sure.
They are paid to be subjective - what else could there be?
And are you happy to say that anyone who mentions that they are a fan of Tolkien or Jackson's work should be roundly rebuffed for their lack of "neutrality"?

I'm a fan of bout Tolkien and Jackson. And I'm willing and able to sit down and rationally and objectively analyze LOTR movie trilogy. The things that are good and the things that are bad.
"It doesn't fill my little heart like Harry Potter movies" would be an argument i could never come up with.

...we don't see any headlines across the internet about Tolkien fans bashing critics because of lukewarm/low reviews. It's so unflattering to our community as a whole. We're better than that.

Whether the review has good-quality critical analysis (positive or negative) is another matter entirely.

But I cringe every time someone dismisses the concept of criticism entirely. Yes, bad film "critics" (I doubt most RT reviewers could even be called that) far outnumber good film critics, just as bad movies outnumber good movies, and bad directors outnumber good directors. A little intuition can lead you to the valuable ones. And quite a few of The Hobbit reviews have been well-written and thoughtful, despite their overall stand on the film.

Kinda stupid how people let someone else decide for them. "It's got a 53% on RT? It must suck...." Not really. Again, I love the movie "Your Highness", and it has a 27% on RT. I already know The Hobbit will be a great movie, so no negative opinion or 50% on RT will sway me otherwise. I only look at RT to see what critics say on some movies, but I never let it speak for me. Too many people are letting that happen. And that meter is weird. A positive review will raise it up 1 or 2%, but one negative review drops it 3-4%. I'm not saying don't listen to critics, but let their OPINION help your expectations, not completely change your mind on seeing it or not. Some "negative" reviews are thought-out and worth the read, like how it drags, which is a worthwhile complaint, but I tend to like that stuff. And some reviewers you can't take seriously. Armond White, for example. He always gives negative reviews to popular films a lot of people like, and gives positive reviews to the stinker films audiences tend to not like. Some critics just wanna trash something to get a rise out of people and to get attention.

I read them but I don't get emotional about them. I learned long ago there is oft times a disconnect between critics and common movie goers. Take Forest Gump, which has a 71% with critics but 95% with the audience. I think that movie was the last time I really gave any credence to critics at large. I now just pay attention to ones with similar tastes as my own and find that a much better gauge if I really am looking at a review for more than just information value.

I have friends that have disabilities, and this term is considered offensive to them as well as to others. Can you think of something else? Such as "Rancid Tomatoes"?

but I am doubting that it is related to any disability they may have.
They are maybe closer to the industry than the average joe or average critic maybe? It's just a guess (still shocked by this: top-critic: 20% non-top-critics:~80%).
My theory (just a guess - but I have been really wondering about it because of the shocking difference in critical opinion based on identification as a top critic) is that people who are deeply involved in the industry are more ruffled by any controversies like the change to 3 films and any impact that had on industry related partners, the pioneering of new technology that makes those settled in existing technology unsettled, and any controversies that may have occurred related to the long and involved saga behind the very existence of the film.

Really don't pay that close attention to the critics. What I find truly enjoyable rarely runs in line with them anyway. Tend to avoid them.

Rottentomatoes.com only tracks and reports what reviewers are saying, they don't make any judgements themselves. Right now they have 19 positive reviews and 8 negative ones, for a "fresh" percentage of 70. That's pretty good. And most of the "top" reviewers haven't been heard from yet.

RT isn't pushing any opinion on the film. It compiles reviews and averages them into a percentage.
Though you can't count on them for being right all the time, they certainly get it right most of the time. I like that someone pointed out Forrest Gumps RT score (a film which, if I had to choose, would be the best film ever made).
But in general, RT's score reflects the quality of the film. If The Hobbits score was at 90% right now, this thread would not exist. It's very biased as fans to bash a ratings site, which has no agenda to begin with.
I'll decide whether or not I like the film when I see it. Lowering expectations in accordance to early buzz can't hurt. However, bashing bad reviews when the film may actually not be that great WILL hurt.
