And though it is a bit of a con, is a really really big screen not worth a few extra bucks?

I'm quite happy to pay a bit more for a giant screen experience, there are 2 where I live - 1 and IMAX branded one, the other is just a truthfully named 'giant screen'. However, the IMAX is actually smaller than the Giant Screen and they charge more! Plus, their branding con causes so many confusions (as evidenced by this thread) that it just really annoys me.

the Red One was 35 mm as far as aspect ratio and quality and that Red Epic surpassed 35 mm and had the ability to shoot at 4 k which is the equivalent of 70 mm...

but the Red Epic's 4k resolution (which I believe is actually 5k, but projected at 4k in cinemas) is actually higher resolution than the 70mm IMAX film stock. Resolution and aspect ratio is different - so the Red Epics are higher resolution and a different aspect ratio from IMAX film. So, if you see The Hobbit in a screen with a 4k projector, that should be the best quality image available.

Higher resolution even at 2-4 times the magnification?

If the finished film is 35mm (which a couple people have kindly pointed out) it needs to be enlarged more than 70mm film stock. Alternately, if they could make a 70mm print the grain would be larger than if they had shot it on 70mm film, right? But I mean we're talking about differences in resolution that hardly anyone would even notice when comparing still images to still images... aren't we?

I find IMAX's branding to be really strange, to be honest. I've seen 70mm movies projected at theaters without IMAX branding. For example, the AFI Silver theater is well known for showing a 70mm print of Lawrence of Arabia. It looks great, actually. I'm hoping that 4K will give us similar quality, but I am not expert enough in these matters to know.
