I had the Hobbit Hole Breakfast at Denny's tonight for supper, and my friend (not a Hobbit fan) had Frodo's Pot Roast Skillet and.... both dishes were delicious! The bacon was done to perfection and oi do I love egg in the basket -- though this might be more appropriate for a V for Vendetta tie in, am I right? The melt in your mouth pot roast was served over a bed of bite sized po-tay-toes, brocolli, and mushrooms which made for a dish (and flavour combination) that is easy to imagine a Hobbit serving. I would that there had been more mushrooms, but my buddy isn't keen on fungi so there were no points lost there. And just so you can gauge how not a fan my friend is, I commented that it would have made more sense for their dish to be Sam's Roast Chicken Skillet and they had no idea why I would say such a thing. All an all a great meal. Some fried tomato would have gone well on the side of my dish. But this is a Hobbit, not a LOTR promotion after all.

I thought that the pot roast skillet could have used more onion, but that's just me. I got most of my wife's onions from her Shire Sausage skillet anyway, so it worked out fine.

I really wanted to try the Sausage Skillet but I'm very particular about cured meats. Did your love like it?

I am a bit fussy about sausages, myself. This was fairly heavily seasoned (but not "hot"); I found it pretty tasty. Your mileage may vary.

and she loved it. I was intrigued by that offering but didn't try it. It has no grounding in Middle-earth whatsoever, apart from Gandalf's name... that and from the photo in the menu it sort of looks like a spam sandwich with some peas stuck in here and there. Regardless my sis had one for lunch today and would not shut up about how delicious it was. That's 4 for 4 by my count.

All this talk of breakfast on another thread has gotten me in the mood. Why do I need Olive Garden or Biaggi's on the next date night, when I can have an egg in a basket at Denny's? It's the height of Hobbit sophistication and I don't even need to dress up.
You'll see that in every contract. It's called a "sanity clause". Ha-ha. You can't fool me. There ain't no Sanity Claus.

as we passed this really cool Denny's again on the way back today from bird-watching. He said he loves breakfast food any time of day, but we didn't stop. Not enough time today.

I've had the Hobbit Hole Breakfast and the Sausage Skillet. I enjoyed both. My wife and her sister both love the Ring Burger. Actually, I had a few bites of my wife's ring burger and it was quite good. The fries weren't bad either. The sausage is very-well seasoned, but suits my taste nicely. We ordered the red velvet pancake puppies and the seed cake french toast as appetizers. They were also enjoyable. In fact, my wife can't get enough of the puppies and she doesn't even claim to like red velvet. What else? We ordered pumpkin patch pancakes for my daughter and I really enjoyed those too. I wonder if I eat too much of my family's food for them. Between the two visits to Denny's that allowed us to try all the aforementioned goodies, we came home with six packs of collectible trading cards. They are pretty good quality. Basically, each card is a glossy photo of a character with a description on the back. There are only twelve cards to collect; two are exclusives (Gandalf and Bilbo). I got the exclusive Gandalf, but not the Bilbo...yet. I've had only a couple of repeats. Other cards collected so far are: non-exclusive Bilbo, non-exclusive Gandalf, Balin, Galadriel, Radaghast, Gollum, Fili, Kili, and Thorin. I'm assuming the last card is Dwalin to go along with Balin. We'll see if I get it.

When I asked if I could take Home this Wrap around Menu she said she would Turn aBlindEye. The Hobbit Slam has Pumpkin Patch Pancakes..Wonderful! Ordering any Hobbit menu item you get 3 Trading Cards. I GOT Kili & Radagast and a Free Pancake Puppies when I come back With a Purchase of an Entree. Much of the descriptions. Make references to "Elevenses!" The Ring Burger is crowned with 3 crispy Onion Rings..etc. Even the place Mats are two sided with "Pie. More Precious to any Hobbit than any Ring? Did you know that sweet syrup can be made from a few varieties of tree, apart from maple. If they were really on their toes they would have Mallorn syrup on the side.

and thought he sounded just a tad (HA!) snobbish. One can choose to order gloriously greasy dishes in just about any restaurant just about anywhere in the world, or not, and I wouldn't say no if Sam offered me some nice crispy bacon and sausages. Denny's still has a reputation for family friendly food, cleanliness and pleasant service where I come from. Bring on the Pumpkin Patch Pancakes, sausages...and pie!

You can view menu copy and photos here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...t-men_b_2009741.html The Ring Burger may look like a heart attack on a bun but if you took it apart and ate the various elements individually it would probably be okay.* It sure looks tasty! *disclaimer: Dammit Jim, I'm a fan not a doctor.

Sausage or pot roast...pot roast or sausage...

I sit here with a Denny's Hobbit menu, a placemat, and six trading cards! Geeky Son and I saw Wreck It Ralph (a delight for those with knowledge of the old video arcade games, and as G.S. said, they did their research well), then headed to the Denny's near the cinemas. Curious about the sausage, I ordered the Shire Sausage Skillet. It arrived - without the sausage! The waitress looked at it and said "Wait, where's the..." and immediately took it back for the "missing link". The 'taters, onions, peppers and 'shrooms were their standard fare for their skillet dishes, what's nice is they use red potatoes and fresh mushrooms. The sausage was pleasant, just slightly spiced with herbs, with sage being the most noticeable (yum). G.S. had The Ring Burger. When it arrived, he proclaimed, "It's Elvish!" - meaning, there were three huge rings piled atop the bun! I noted that they had not been sullied by the Dark Lord, whereupon he added that they would have gone nicely with some "sweet and Sauron" sauce. He deemed the burger most delicious. He started considering meals that hadn't made it onto the menu. Why no "Gollum's Fish Fry" - "so juicy sweeet!"? Probably would make folks queasy, I replied. He next rattled off "Denethor's Dessert Flambé", "Boromir's Swiss Cheese Melt", and "Forbidden Pool Fish Stew". Definitely no winners there. He picked up the Lone-Lands Campfire Cookie Milk Shake to go, and let me have a taste. Or two. Or three. It was rich! Then we found that the waitress liked to put "extra ice cream" in them when she made them. She'd given us our card packs at the table, then handed us a third when we paid. (We left her a nice tip.) No Bilbo - but I do have Thorin, Gollum, Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, two coupons for Pancake Puppies, and $5.00 off our next visit. And we were not the only geeks there. A family in the booth next to ours was taking a long time selecting from their menu, it was obvious they were having a lot of fun with it! I know we'll be back before the promotion ends. Frodo's pot roast, next time! Oh, the advertisement on the placemat? "Pie, more precious to a hobbit than any Ring." You can purchase slices, or a whole Hobbit Harvest Pie: pumpkin or pecan. Where's Darkstone?

It's not where I usually eat out at, but I tried the Shire Sausage Skillet and it was delicious! Ate every bite, it was nice and hot and the sausage was perfectly seasoned and not too spicy. My daughter had the Gandalf Gobble Melt and only ate a little ( she has a small appetite) and took the rest home for lunch tomorrow. She really liked it too, especially the cup of gravy :) So we may go back (got coupons with the trading card pack!) and try something else before the promotion ends.
