Shot from TV Spot 6 SPOILER Can't Post

In the shot where you see Bilbo attacking someone/something with Sting at the ending you can see Thorin lying on the ground in the background, is this his death or what do you guys think ?

Might be a bit tricky if Thorin dies in this one.

I'm not sure if this specific shot needed its own thread [In reply to] Can't Post

Anyway, I highly doubt it's Thorin's death. This is a television spot for the first film, and it seems to be part of the warg attack scene.

That one of the Eagles accidentally lets Thorin fall to his death, which royally upsets poor Mr. Baggins. What an emotional climax to the first film that would be. The last shot could be Bilbo hacking down an Eagle and feathers coming out of the screen in 3D. Briliant, if I say so myself.

Doubt it [In reply to] Can't Post

Particularly because Thorin doesn't die during the Bo5A. He dies later.

Not to mention, A. Bilbo doesn't participate in the battle, and he doesn't defend Thorin - Fili and Kili do, and B. Thorin falls in the middle of a huge, messy battle with thousands of participants, and in that shot the fallen person and Bilbo are the only two people in the shot. It doesn't look like they're in the middle of a crowded battlefield.

Given that there's a fallen warg in the left background, my guess is that Thorin gets conked out during a warg attack and Bilbo's defending him at that point.

I highlighted this in the other thread about the TV spot [In reply to] Can't Post

Here, just scroll down a bit.

Honestly, I think the writers have fabricated a fake death of sorts for Thorin, to amp up emotions...

Wouldn't be the first time!

And as we know there will be wargs in that scene, perhaps they should have him fall off the cliff while fighting a warg and its goblin rider? Would be a nice subtle reference, don't you think?

My guess [In reply to] Can't Post

It's immediately after the "Thorin get's shaken in a warg's jaws" scene that has been mentioned by RA. Thorin is just stunned.

It's probably there to give Bilbo a chance to be heroic at the end of film one, now that he doesn't get to kill spiders until the second film.

Probably right, but [In reply to] Can't Post

Bilbo seems to be reacting as if he believes Thorin is dead, so I think PJ will be giving us another fake death...

If so, I find it astounding how many times they are willing to use this device to bail them out of a writing dilemma...

Bit of a mess of Bilbo's story [In reply to] Can't Post

Tolkien lays out a quite simple but effective line for Bilbo as he grows in courage and bravery and his 'Tookishness' comes to the fore, climaxing in his first use of Sting agressively in Mirkwood.
So far I have seen him defending himself with it from a goblin attack (presumably in the Goblin Town/Gollum section of the film) and now this. Can't say either scene makes me very hopeful as it seems PJ has thrown Tolkiens development of Bilbo right out the window (or over a cliff) here.

The three film structure [In reply to] Can't Post

would make following Tolkien's exact character arc for Bilbo a little more difficult. It would have worked great with Mirkwood/wood elves escape being the climax of film 1. It could be Bilbo's real defining moment of the film. However, I feel like it makes perfect sense now with the three film structure for Bilbo to be given this moment chronologically earlier so that the new ending for the first film actually feels like an ending, and not a film cut at its 2/3 point.
