I imagine there might be some padding [In reply to] Can't Post

We've already seen from the alternate endings some padding (the scene with Gandalf discussing whether Bilbo would turn up or not).

Perhaps they stop off at Bree as well, and/or pass by the Barrow Downs.

And, of course, they don't match up completely. But they do make for a nice comparison.

Well I haven't seen the movie to precisely compare [In reply to] Can't Post

but I guess there is Bree to consider. I guess that Weather Top + Bree is roughly equal to traveling to, burgling, fighting, and escaping the Trolls. Of course it looks like the book is not being precisely followed in every detail so there could be more or less here or there.

The distance traveled is somewhat comparable - it's just that the dwarves make camp rather than stopping at the inn (according to the book). Who's to say if that is exactly what will happen in the movie, though.

I don't see it as padding though [In reply to] Can't Post

I think these sorts of scenes will enhance the films greatly, particularly as PJ is at his best when he slows down a little (the Shire, bits of Rohan, etc).

I meant pad out the journey between the Shire and Trollshaw [In reply to] Can't Post

It would be very easy to condense that part of the journey.

Right [In reply to] Can't Post

But I see "padding" as a negative term.

I would prefer to call it "enhancing" or "putting meat on the bones."

Padding implies that there's already meat on the bones, and anything extra is just a fat suit! Wink

Apologies [In reply to] Can't Post

"Putting meat on the bones" might be a better term.

And the tastier it is, the better.

Yes, but [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not sure how tasty "zombie goblin flesh" is going to be...

I'm pretty excited about the meat being added to the bones [In reply to] Can't Post

And I'm one of those who adores most of what PJ added to LOTR (but please, no torrents of skulls...Crazy) so I'm cautiously optimistic Smile

I look forward to seeing the characterisation of the dwarves, and from trailer 2 it looks like there could be some 'campfire' scenes along the way too Smile And I love Ori already just from seeing the vlogs! I need more Ori!!

Also, I'm sure a lot of the added time will go towards enhancing the characterisation of the purse.

I must have missed something in the link [In reply to] Can't Post

where did PJ say the original cut of AUJ was around 5 hours?

Also, wasn't the original cut of Fellowship like 5 or 6 hours?

Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

It was those sorts of campfire scenes that I thought were missing in LOTR, which was disappointing.

In most stories, I like the material in-between the big moments best. Plus, you can't have a fully satisfying film if there are only big moments.

Indeed, in order for a moment to be big, it must stand in contrast to smaller ones!

yes [In reply to] Can't Post

But some of the stuff that didn't make it into Fellowship might go in here. For example, many of Barliman's lines didn't make it. If the Dwarves visit Bree for supplies, some may go to his great granddad.

There will at least be some travelling shots to create a sense of distance travelled.

A Far Dragon is the best kind...

It's just over 2.5 hours... [In reply to] Can't Post

And PJ has apparently cut out at least half of it (Beorn, Wood Elves/Thranduil/Legolas/Tauriel/Galion, the spiders, the enchanted stream, Bilbo's tree, Barrels out of Bond, and quite a bit of the Necro story). So, assuming the second half was around equal to the first, 2.5 + 2.5 = 5.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!
