But as for the rest of it, yeah, that film was not the best example of an adaptation! Creepily, my principal in high school was named Mrs. Kilrathi (or something very similar to it as I recall). Eeek!

And a Wing Commander style single player / co-op. Both games in one. Provided he gets enough funding.

Chris Roberts is a better game developer than filmmaker, that's for sure. I see more people chiming in on Wing Commander. Makes me happy. So, so sad that space sims as a genre have pretty much disappeared.

I didn't really expect that's what it would be, but I've been thinking since forever that someone needed to remake that game as an MMO. I'm going to have to check it out...

It's about time the space sim genre was brought back in all its glory. There was a real sense of beauty and wonder about those old Wing Commander games, and it's good to see that they apparently intend to recapture it.

You'll be able to be a merchant, explorer, mercenary or pirate and roam the galaxy with fellow players. The bigger ships can be manned by more players (a pilot, a gunner etc), you will be even able to board other ships and battle on foot like a first person shooter. That's the plan, anyway. I have a feeling he's being a little too ambitious but even if he manages to implement half of that it could be a great game for genre fans. Here's a one hour video with the reveal and Q&A: http://www.gamespot.com/...es_gdc_panel20121010

are the dead bones as armour and weapons. After death bones become very brittle. Poor armour and even worse weapons. His mace is simply ridiculous. As Otaku points out all those projections would be more to the detriment of Bolg than any of his enemies.

I think it would work up to a point (no pun intended.) I wouldn't want to be the first one to get hit with it. But yeah, long protuberances on either armor or weapons are generally a no-no. They tend to snap off (as likely to injure the owner as the opponent) and channel incoming blows rather than glancing them.

That would depend on the function.

I would imagine the function is to intimidate and humiliate his enemies, and perhaps a superstitious belief that he gains power from the items. Same reasons scalps, shrunken heads, and other body parts are worn in some real life cultures. Nothing to do with physical protection.

of armour protecting against weapons and weapons as implements of physical offense. Bone armour and weapons like that would splinter and shatter under relatively little stress. They are a total departure from what has come before from these film makers. The skull on a helmet in ROTK is totally different. That orc is wearing other protection, the skull is there to terrify with no pretense of offering protection.

The highly functional weapons and armour are largely designed by the cold, analytical mind of Saruman. We see Mordor orcs have more of a taste for impractical detailing (as seen in Frodo and Sam's Mordor disguise). Bolg's gear isn't intended to stop a sword, it is intended to intimidate (especially the other orcs he commands). Red coats don't stop bullets either...

if not then your point is fair and myself and others commenting on what we thought was armour are wrong, but that thing he holds is definitely a weapon. Functional arms and armour were not the sole domain of Saruman, at least not intended by my comments, I was talking about all the LOTR arms and armour and other arms and armour seen in TH. Sure it is not faultless, for example there are too many cases of armour with exposed necks which realistically is one of the places on the body to have priority of protection, but at least on the whole the rest of what we have seen has been highly plausible apart from maybe the OTT Witch Kings morning star.

There is nothing wrong with orcs wearing clothing and armor that serves purposes other than defense (such as inspiring fear, or being ceremonial). Bolg, in film 1, seems to not be an army captain anyway, so he doesn't need to be that functional. Plus, war chiefs in numerous tribes, kingdoms and empires could wear some incredibly outlandish stuff. But that's not the problem with Bolg. The problem with Bolg is that he looks like some cheap fantasy character from an 80s TV show.

Rohan = horses everywhere dwarves = everything is angular and geometric elves = everything is art nouveau mixed with pseudo-Japanese Though I think the Rohirrim were the best designed of the whole lot, I would prefer a less one-dimensional depiction of cultures. The design work for the cultures of Laketown, and Dale, seems to be a tad more complex, so there is hope.
