knees together waiting for someone to unlock it whenever I get there. I went to an office building in Chicago last year and that was the first time I've ever come across a locked restroom door. What the hey? Do people there steal the toilet paper or something that makes it necessary to lock the door to the TOILET?

I've read all the books about Shackleton's trip to Antarctica and the subsequent heroic trip across the spine of South Georgia. I also have a fascination with journeys in cold, inhospitable places. So I envy you! Had to laugh when you said you were shy about posting at first. Reminds me of a college friend who once said that he was really shy in high school, but had finally come out of his shell. "And now everyone's trying to figure out how to get me back in." Going far, far away is definitely "retreating." Can't wait to hear all about it when you come back. And we will be needing lots of pictures.

Just kidding, I read the whole thing. Congrats on reaching immortality! Do you have assess to TORn's secret stash of spoilers now? Your trip south sounds remarkable. I'm jealous that you'll be waking up to all that gorgeous scenery each day. Not so jealous that you'll be studying wind, though I hope you have a great time, and you know we'll still be expecting daily TORn posts, even if you have to use dial-up!

'The blabbermouth trio here, we got another triliogy in the making. You all get a cookie and a futon in the clouds. '.... That is a true honor DanielLB and you earned it fair and square, with quality and a caring 'deNICEr' too. It is an honor to have you among us adding life to the positive energy. All three of you are very special spirits i will add. Your venture sound truly intriguing and it is a very worthy and important one as well. We all are on the edge of real climate change and the more awareness that is brought forth, is so vital. The daddy in me is going to say 'Be careful and watch yourself at all times.' I'd say have a good system of survival gear being it is...NO WHERE NEAR ATLANTA! That includes a fur lined jock strap you know....Just checking. How big is the research team/support crew. You can't do a solo there! The pictures are so striking. The air so clear. That area has a beauty all of its own. And i will wait fireside to hear of the tales from the 'ends of the world'. I am sure they will be a fascination.. Just, just one thing...the penguins aren't dancing....ever since Elijah Woods went down there i thought...wait a minute, wait a minute, now i get it, they are poised for your arrival. I am a little slow at times. Until we meet again. CHEERS!

So you'll be traveling by ship, yes? How long will that take? I'd love to travel by ship sometime. The ocean is so remarkable, and I'd love to wake up surrounded by it each morning.

I don't think I'd like that. Four days on the open ocean, though, sounds wonderful. I just hope you guys don't run into any of them there icebergs. Nasty things, those!

On the posting milestone and your upcoming research trip. Funnily (sadly) enough, there were a couple articles on just your topic, the dangerous shift in the southern winds, on National Public Radio here in the US recently. Let's see... *rummages around on internet* oh, here they are! (the first two articles in the search page) Travel well as you do your part to make the world a better place! I firmly believe that fundamental research like you're doing has exactly that effect, diminishing our ignorance and opening our minds to the next questions our research uncovers. What a marvelous, huge world we live in - and how little we know of it!

I joked with my family and friends that I wouldn't go if I couldn't see The Hobbit. They all looked astonished until I told them I was joking! Just shows how much of a Tolkien fan you are that they believed you for a second! :D I'm not so much an Antarctic fan as a science fan - please keep notes of your time down south and post them when you return to TORN! And congrats on reaching immortality. :)

And thank you for the link - a large portion of that is the justification for my research. The first link is interesting. I didn't listen to the interview, but I read the article, but it doesn't say whether they are a scientist or not? One interesting thing they didn't mention is that warming over the Antarctic continent benefits ice growth, as warm air can hold more water vapour, thus, theoretically, increasing snow in the interior of the continent. On the exterior (the bits next to the ocean), changing ocean and atmospheric circulations are reducing sea ice. They vaguely touch on that point, but don't say it explicitly. It doesn't happen in the Arctic since climate change pushes temperatures above freezing point, thus reducing snow fall. Geek mode off.
