I've had their names memorized since I was ten when I first starting reading the book and watching the 1977 movie over and over, so that helps. And they've always been one of my favorite things about the Hobbit, so I immediately latched onto their PJ movie versions last year. I'm good at remember details like that anyway I guess.

Tolkien lifted almost all of the names of the dwarves (and some other notable characters) from the Old Norse poem "Voluspa". Tolkien Gateway has a great page outlining the "catalogue of dwarves" from the Voluspa and highlighting all the ones transferred into Tolkien's legendarium: http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/V%C3%B6lusp%C3%A1
"After all, I believe that legends and myths are largely made of 'truth', and indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode; and long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered and must always reappear." Professor Tolkien, 1951

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Seriously, Mark Hadlow in the Dori get-up looks like Kelsey Grammer, if he were a Dwarf rather than a mutant...it's eerie! Dori Kelsey Separated at birth? Maybe his name's actually Kori? So, it's Dori, Kori, Nori, Ori? Well, maybe they're not really THAT similar...

Jed Brophy (Nori) is one of Jackson's go to guys way back since Braindead. He also played several orcs, elves, Sharku (the warg rider), Rohan soldier, etc. Now in The Hobbit he gets to play one of the 13 dwarves. In the book Nori isn't given much characterization (he drops Bilbo while escaping Goblin Town and saves him from the wargs). Is his casting as Nori an indication that he won't be super heavily featured or is it finally Jed Brophy's day to shine?

Actually you're thinking of Dori. Nori has even less to do in the book. I don't think he even has one line.

... and I could do so long before the films got off the ground. Reading the book multiple times over and being obsessive about names meant I didn't have to struggle to actively memorize them. And now after actually seeing the Dwarves, it's hard not to remember their names

It took me a minute and seven seconds because I didn't realise that you are given a pattern to get them in. I was just typing in each name as I saw the face and then realised that I was inputting incorrect names when matched up to the faces.

But according to the annual/almanac, Dori is the strongest. And that stays true to the book.

The only ones I used to mix up were Nori and Ori. Maybe because they are totally invisible in the book. However, they do look quite different in PJ's Hobbit, so once I got to know them, I can easily tell them apart.

Who drops Bilbo? I don't think Nori ever speaks in the book. In fact, he's barely even mentioned.

Unless you count the Bakshi version where they rename Saruman to Aruman... The BBC radio version goes for a similar pronunciation. I assume to minimise confusion with Sauron. Needed more without a face to attach the name to though.

that they will be so busy setting up exotic backstories for the Dwarves that poor old Bilbo will be forgotten. I am sorry to go on and on about the book like it has relevance (ppppffft!) but the Dwarves were largely anon in the book and only a few had a lot to say, like Thorin, Balin, Fili and Kili, the rest were in the background busily being generic Dwarves, and Bilbo took centre stage as is right and proper. I really fail to see why All the dwarves must be so prominent, all their backstories are actually not that important to the story as a whole, the Dwarves in the book are there to create atmosphere and tension for the Ques not to tell us their life stories. Only Thorin and Balin I really feel should have a good long backstory, IMO I dont think we really need to have them all so individual as they should not have prominence over Bilbo, its HIS tale and I dont really care about Hobbit Game tie-ins and figurines. IMO of course. When I first saw the design of the dwarves I got a terrible sinking feeling, I was longing to see Tolkiens Dwarves arriving at Bilbos door, but it just wasnt to be. I will never get to see those silver tassels.

And the basis of those three films ultimately comes down to the adventure of a hobbit. Anybody that has read the book knows it. I'm sure PJ and co wouldn't have forgotten this.

but if I were coming into this blind, there better be a gosh darn reason for having 13 dwarves if half of them don't even talk! Honestly they probably would be better off cutting out half the dwarves and really focusing on the most interesting ones, HOWEVER that would be sacrilege on the highest order. It's unfortunate film adaptations get stuck with baggage. Again I love having 13 dwarves, but from an adaptation standpoint, a problem-solving and FILMMAKING perspective, having 13 anonymous bearded dudes as part of your main cast is something I personally would never want to take on. Also with pressure from fans to keep EVERYTHING from the book whether or not it makes for a good movie, my head spins just thinking about it. PJ and Co have always had a great knack for cutting inessentials, rewatching the LOTR there are even more moments I wish he could have cut out that were made needlessly complex in order to maintain certain "bookish standards." Again, from a filmmaking standpoint. As a Tolkien fan I of course want everything from my precious little books, but sometimes it's good to learn to let go.
