people complaining about wargs in paragraphs and paragraphs of posts

we saw them for what 1 sec or 0.5 sec?

when somebody is disappointed about something they see for 0.5 sec it just shows you how "some people can never be satisfied" saying really works in real life.

I just hope all of you disappointed star-wars-prequel-mentioning people will stay true to your opinions and stay out of my way when ticket buying time comes.

how come the wargs look like big naked rodents? they looked better 10 years ago and they were pretty bad then. I thought Weta would want to blow our socks off with the new designs. I know we only caught a glimpse but they looked really fake and about as real as a Chubacabra.

Is it just me or do they NOT have fur haha?? They look like a skinned version of a wolf...

Honestly I'm not being negative for the sake of being negative -but Gmork from the Neverending Story looks perfect...how (20 odd years later) can they have gone backwards?

I did love the alternate endings to the trailer -restored some faith.

I want to LOVE these films I really do... Evil

They'll have fur - they're wolves afterall!

As for Gmork, he scared me as a child. And these do the same job. Using the same technology as Gmork today would be awful though.

Worried. [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been worried for a while. Mainly my concern was that these films should FEEL like they are from the same world as the Lord of the Rings films.

Then the more I heard about some of the changes the more I thought "oh great -here we go" Unsure

Peter Jackson made some choices in the LOTR's films that he is now changeing -trolls that speak, Wargs etc

And the comedy needs to be toned down... All just my opinion of course.

Officially disappointed - yeah that would be me.

My lack of disinterest grows with each passing bit of media released. I guess I recognize too much of what bored and annoyed me in LoTR in the books and films.

-Dwarves - utterly depressed. They look and come across so artificial.
-Radagast - the less said the better. The trailer confirmed what I said the other day.
-Trailers seem to make me more bummed about the whole thing. It feels too much like LoTR which I'm not a fan of.
-Three films? Two is too much...

I don't even want to see Beorn now, disappointed beyond belief.

I hate to be sour grapes but Peter Jackson's Middle Earth is not a place I'll return to any time soon.

Sorry guys and gals this was the last way I expected to react as everything seemed so different before I saw that first trailer. I wanted to love this and I thought I would but a year later I realize that sadly is not the case.

On a scale of disheartened, where is everyone? So disheartened that they will give up on the films, or a disappointed enough to have a grumble, but still keep up to date with production?

Gmork was so obviously a puppet. And we never fully see him, because it was impossible at the time.

Now, as for design, that is purely subjective.

I come out of the cinema in awe & adoration for the film makers.Wink

Here's hoping

Also like many of you I will be online everyday scouring the net for updates ref the production, photo's and video blogs.

I see what you are saying. I thought it too, to an extent. The wargs faces are great [In reply to] Can't Post

in design. The faces and colour are FAR better this time, but in the brief glimpse, they didn't seem large or shaggy enough (and the lack of shaggy fur gave a ratty appearance to the tail). Also, they do seem waaaay to CG, but that might be fixed by the time the film releases.

I am hoping for a fully realized version of the second wolf DarkJackal shared in a link several threads back. It was from the An Unexpected Journey calender, and THAT beast looked like a WARG! He was wonderful. I hope a better textured version of him is what we get in the films.

I also agree about the Narnia piece. The Lion. The Witch and The Wardrobe was a very faithful and a very good movie, it did well, and most people enjoyed it. It was very charming at many points. The Hobbit, which is in origin a story for the same target audience as the first Narnia novel, could do worse than to have some similarities with that other movie. It should be Bigger, bolder, and with more frightening creatures, but not entirely dissimilar.

As for Narnia I dont mind that kind of feel its quite charming and yet a dangerous place, and Peter Dinklage was brilliant as Trumpkin in that film. Have you seen the intensity in those eyes?

Too many dwarves! [In reply to] Can't Post

My husband is a non-book reader, so I was interested in his take on the trailer. The only thing he knows about the Hobbit, going in, is that it's about Bilbo and how he finds the Ring.

His big comment was that it would take him awhile to get used to all those dwarves, and so he liked the scenes with the characters he knew, like Gandalf and Gollum, better...

He's always been a good barometer for me of how well the films worked for people who aren't book fans. So far, he's cautiously interested, but Jackson will need to pull a few strings to get him into a different experience of Middle Earth, from what I can tell...

You nailed it. Gmork was a masterpiece. He still terrifies some people on this very site [In reply to] Can't Post

even now, all these years later. Lol. A little tweaking to the snout, and Gmork would be ideal.

If you want my honest opinion, I suspect that Peter has a bit of a contrarian streak regarding earlier films in the genre. It remains one of my great fears. . . that he will be so averse to having a Moses or Dumbledore like moment that he will manage to ruin Gandalf's most astounding (and essential) displays of magic in the book, or that he will be so averse to having a Warg that is obviously similar to The Neverending Story werewolf, that he would make the wargs less wolflike (though nothing could be as bad as the TTT hyena!) just to make them "different."

If it ain't broke don't fix it. But I am not going to go all out in trashing the warg designs. I am very thankful that he at least made the effort and changed them from the hyena design. The Trailer may not do them justice. I'll at least wait to see them in the theatre before giving a final judgement.

I'm agreed on RA as Thorin . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

. . . what I saw of him in the trailer, to me, was either a case of overacting, or of poorly-portrayed disinterest . . .

I'm really hoping it was just the way they cut the trailer . . . Thorin is a major player, and if I don't believe in his portrayal, it will just emphasize the other flaws I am seeing . . .

My wife is also a non book, actually non Tolkien, reading person [In reply to] Can't Post

she said she didn't like Golum in the trailer he just seemed "too friendly and nice" and his "talk about eating Bilbo just seemed unbelievable"... That coming from someone who knows only enough about middle earth to be dangerous. Tongue She said the "mean Gollum" at the end of the Gollum edit trailer would have been better through the whole scene instead of the "wide eyed peppy one". I have to say my wife is someone who is definitely the general audience when it comes to LOTR or middle earth stuff and even SHE understood that Gollum was all wrong. She actually said "there is no way anyone would be afraid of that", meaning Gollum or rather Smeagol in the riddles in the dark sequence of the trailer.

My wife had the same response weaver So I totally understand where your husband is coming from

On a separate note...Wink

Seems people don't like others being negative about these films even though more and more views bring about things that are either all wrong in relation to the book, Bad looking CG in a made public "authentic" trailer, or material which is 99% made up from something vague and non descriptive. Then they actually come into a thread with the word "disappointed" in the title, getting mad at people for being disappointed with the trailer...Crazy Honestly I think Peter Jackson is trying too hard to make these films fit into a mold of something, they really don't need to be made into to work, as well as trying too hard to keep a level of innovation with technological advancement. If it ain't broke don't try and fix it. The wargs are a perfect example of that. at least in TTT they looked like they were "in" the scene, Granted they looked like hyenas but they were IN the scene, where as in the new Hobbit trailer they look fake and not really part of the scene, more or less painted on top of the scene and almost cartoony IMO

. . . the left side of the screen shows "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey/NR/2h 48m".

2h 48m . . . is this the first indicator of the length of the film?
