It was shore mind you but I liked it. As I said the trailer just gave me chills in a good way, and there is nothing about any of this hobbit stuff that makes me think narnia.

Art. Just art. Similarily, the new Les Miz trailer should get an Oscar of its own. PJ is not up there in that category. Or that's my opinion.

with no particular M-E vice to it. No "ethnic music" for all the different cultures, no familiar themes or instruments etc. I don't hate it.

Both The Girl With... and The Social Network teaser trailers were works of perfection. Fincher really has a way with trailers. But LOTR was a different bunch of films from both of those and needed a very different, more classic style of trailer. Which the films got and, as far as those types of trailers go, I thought they were spectacular.

Seconded on the overuse of CGI

I'm hoping these are just examples of the trailer's editor (or the studio peering over his shoulder) picking all the big action beats. The LOTR movies were pretty tasteful in their use of CGI; even the dodgier effects were surrounded by real people performing real stunts, so it didn't bother me. Only the huge battle scenes, for the most part, were necessarily thick with pixels and not real people. Of course Gollum has to be done as he is, and he looks great to me. But the wargs and hedgehogs are both sore spots. I also saw what seemed like several CGI goblins (including that big bastard at the end), and I hope this is the exception rather than the rule; the orc costumes in LOTR were mostly awesome, and I'm hoping to see more like that, except in cases where CG is really necessary (like the goblin king in all his bloated magnificence). On the other hand, the CG on the stone giants looks completely bad-ass to me. I love those shots. I know some people think that sequence looks very over-amped compared to the passing reference to it in the book, but I love that bit - it seems appropriately harrowing for an overmatched company crawling up a mountainside at night, in a storm; and it reminds me of the fellowship in FOTR being turned back by the avalanche. Only even more so. Love it.

Why are you people insisting in having his music on the trailers? The score is not finished. This is not LOTR. And Shore's music is seldom used for these trailers. I wasn't expecting his music at all here as it's not done. And in my opinion Immediate Music and Two Steps from Hell have much better music for trailers than Howard Shore. And i do mean just trailers.

I don't think anyone's really "insisting" on Shore's music.

But several people's first reactions to this were "it doesn't feel like LOTR" or "it doesn't feel like Middle Earth," and I think a lot of that comes down to the very different atmosphere the music creates. If you watch the alternate endings with Shore's Shire theme, it's clear as day: BAM, you're back in PJ's Middle Earth. It's hard to overstate how important music is in creating the feeling of these movies. For an average theater-goer, I think this music is fine. Maybe even the best option in creating an exciting trailer that grabs you by the lapels. But for LOTR nuts, Shore's statelier music is ideal, and for that reason (plus dwarf singing!) I think I prefer the teaser trailer slightly over this one.

Faenoriel wrote: Favourite moment: "I'm going on an adventure!" Mine too. Side story - I had the opportunity to go to New Zealand last November and visited Hobbiton on the second day they reopened it for tourists after shooting was done. I have a picture of me standing in the same cut where Bilbo is running through as he says his soon-to-be-famous line. FYI, it is the same location where the audience got it's first view of the hobbit holes as Gandalf and Frodo ride through the cut in the hills in Gandalf's cart

and then i may conclude that none of the trailers give the middle earth/lotr feeling since like i said, they seldom used Howard Shore's music.

I love their textures and how they are lit in an otherwise dark scene. As for the wargs, they did look a tad unfinished but I trust that WETA will give them at least some polish before the film is released this December. They generally did some industry-best work in the trilogy, and have continued to provide some of the best effects CGI/practical today - their work on the latest Apes film was unbelievable.

a little was the music during the second half of the trailer ... which was used last year for the final Harry Potter film trailer too - it reminded me too much of that. Still, I thought it was fantastic overall!

the Hobbit is very Narnian if you look at number of talking animals...just sayin' Also didn't we want The Hobbit to be whimsical and fun and silly and adventurous? though if you referring to the the visual aesthetic of the Narnia films, then I digress heartily

I enjoyed the trailer. I'd have liked more, and could find some pacing flaws if I picked with it, but I won't for now. Overall, I thought it was both enjoyable and encouraging. "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Do they mean the bit where Gandalf is running in a kind of underground dungeon? I just assumed that was Angmar or wherever the Nazgul tombs are located.

As has been explained and articulated previously.
My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Personally, I'm really happy to see a dramatic difference in design and overall appearance between TH and LotR. I've always been concerned that this would feel and look too much like the trilogy, and not enough like a classic fantasy tale. Thankfully, it does, and it becomes most evident with Radagast. My hopes have escalated incredibly.
