I appreciate all the points you make, particularly that Tolkien's version is more camouflaged, which it was supposed to be as a hidden place. But Bilbo chose to retire in Rivendell, and Frodo, once he reached it, wanted to stay there as long as possible. Which place seems more inviting to a hobbit? I think it's Nasmith's version. But Tolkien's more angular one, as you point out, does have a tough feeling to it, like something you'd expect to find on the Edge of the Wild.
