wow [In reply to] Can't Post

that was one impressive blog and so much revealed! I know there wasn't the footage shown from the films that got premiered at Comic Con but I really don't care. Literally there were things there that jumped out of the book and onto my screen. Dale looks just as I imagined and Beorn's House too. And we get Rosgobal!

So Frodo Baggins boarded the great ship and passed on into the west till the sweet fragrance on the air filled his sense and the sound of singing came over the water. Then it seemed to him that, as in a dream, he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country. The third age of Middle Earth was over, the days of the Rings had passed and the story and song of those times was at an end.

ComicCon looked like so much fun to be involved with, would love to go there one day.

And the sets! Beorns hall looked incredible, just how i imagined it and really felt just right.

Dale for me was not how i imagined (didnt imagine it as Mediterranean) but it doesnt matter from the blog it looks beautiful and i think will give a different character to ME.

Goblin town looks very exciting as well,

Differences from Comic-Con footage *spoilers* [In reply to] Can't Post

The part of the blog about the actual making of the movie and not Comic-Con is actually pretty close to what we saw at Comic-Con, but they removed all the second-film bits I assume. So the segments showing Bilbo scrambling around in ginormous piles of gold and speaking to Smaug, as well as all the Laketown stuff, looks like it was replaced with instead showing Goblin-town and Radagast. I believe that originally it went from showing Thranduil to a long segment focusing on Bard, Smaug attacking Laketown, and the Master of Laketown. There was also a silly moment involving a large amount of dead fish getting poured over Bifur in his barrel that I didn't notice this time, though I'll have to watch it again to check. New stuff in this one: They did not show anything about the Great Goblin at the Con, and there is a lot more talking to different departments like the prosthetics, etc.

The like 3 seconds of footage they showed towards the beginning is from the 12 minutes they showed at the Con, notice the stone giants?? It's really neat watching all the behind-the-scenes Con stuff, since I was in the crowd, so it's funny seeing PJ and the crew's reactions to OUR reactions about the footage and everything.

Of course I'm looking forward to watching the films tremendously, but I'll miss these blogs. :)

I was actually the most excited to see some Dwarves in full armor! Man, they look great! Now, being that Thorin wasn't in full armor, what do you make of that scene of him leading an army of Dwarves?

My opinion: This is a scene from the first film, not the second. So, this is probably not from the Bo5A. 'm guessing it's from either a flashback or scene depicting the Dwarf/Goblin wars. I came to this conclusion in a few ways. First, they aren't showing much (if anything) from the second film in these Vlogs. Also, Richard Armitage mentioned in an interview early on that the dwarves get decked out in full battle armor for the Bo5A. In my opinion, Thorin also looks (from what I could tell) considerable younger. So, what do you all think?

That, and all of the other fantastical elements (such as Beorn's house) that keep on popping up make this movie feel more like the classic fairytale it should be, though I'm still against many of the changes/inclusions. Either way, I'm really jazzed to see the post-production diaries!

Does it ever say that stone giants are made of in the hobbit or anywhere? [In reply to] Can't Post

I never thought of them as being made of actual stone like they look from the tiny bit we see of one in the trailer. I always assumed they were giants who chucked stones about and lived in the mountains among the stone?

I dont mind a giant being a giant human of some kind. Gandalf said some were near enough decent or something to that effect so i always thought of them as a bit too big for their surroundings and can get up to evil things but are mostly not on anyones side and just kinda mess about.

That shot was so classic [In reply to] Can't Post

I felt like I was watching a shot from Ten Commandments or King Kong. That's not exactly a good thing, since it looks like they're attempting to do some sort of visual effect trick, but we should all be able to stomach a bit of campiness every now and then. Though I am not surprised people are going heel turn on this. "Bring it closer to the book!" / "This element from the book sucks, don't do it." sort of thing.

I just don't see why anyone would build all that just to show us what it looks like after all is said and done. More likely it is used to film Smaug's attack. It'll be sad and beautiful to see it all being ripped apart and burned down.

no "heel-turn" here! [In reply to] Can't Post

This is a quote by me from a thread from almost a year ago:

"I'm fine with there being no large, rock-hurdling creatures in that scene. A thunderstorm high up in a mountain pass at night is about the scariest place in the world to be.. without adding a fantastical (and slightly over-the-top) element to it. It's basically a passing mention in the book and will probably get no mention except maybe in dialogue. For example: "Even the mountain is against us! It's as if giants are hurdling stones down on us to keep us from our quest!" (disclaimer; I am not an author, playwright or screenwriter). I think that would serve as a great nod to the book without needing to have cg creatures in the distance throwing rocks at eachother.

Although, I do have a cool vision in my head of enormous, dark silhouettes exposed when the lightning flashes. but only for brief glimpses."

Anyways, I agree about stomaching campiness in a PJ movie. It's something I can deal with, especially in the context of a more light-hearted look at M.E.

To me i think its pre-Smaug like everyone else is assuming, when everything was great in Dale. If that is the case must be weird watching something you have spent so much time designing and building to get burnt a few weeks later!

It's just one of those little details from the book that I'm really excited to see. I never, ever thought they'd make it into PJ's films, so I'm awfully happy about it.

I've never imagined what they'd look like, so I'm happy with PJ's interpretation. Plus, I expect them to be on screen for no more than five minutes, and probably less than that.

The problem with introducing such insanely huge, powerful creatures are that the audience will (correctly) be confused and asking:

So why aren´t these behemoths anywhere to be seen in LOTR? Why doesn´t Sauron or the good guys try to use some of them?

Whenever Tolkien introduced overpowered characters (Army of the Dead, Bombadill, Eagles, Ents, Stone Giants), he created lots of problems for the logic and plot.

POSSIBLE MEGASPOILER [In reply to] Can't Post

At 2:33 we casn see gandalf and Oin actors hugging, at the back of the shoot we can se what could very well be Thorin´s grave, also Oin is wearinf some kind of armour wich for me, would place it in film two. At least they are shooting some stuff about Oin´s fate in Moria (joking, but not so) but if you look on left a staff grows up between the group, two options maybe:
this is not Gandalf´s hobbit staff we have seen, wo at least it changes during film two could it be Radagst´s?

Radagast at Erebor?

In that case maybe Sylvester just shooted a scene that day and was arounTongue

This could very well be "that" scene... but that's VERY speculative at this point. He's definitely wearing armor... that's a sarcophagus-looking thing in the background. Giant candelabra.

I think that's Gandalf's staff, though. I'm wondering if the staff is somewhat like a flower. In the beginning it's in a "bud" state, but as the film progresses, it "blooms" into what we recognize as Gandalf's staff from LOTR. The staff in the scene above, looks very similar to Gandalf's from LOTR...

As long as the film makes it quite clear that the stone-giants are a force of nature, and that they couldn't be tamed like trolls or persuaded like Ents, I don't think the audience will have any trouble accepting their absence from Lord of the Rings. I certainly wouldn't want the filmmakers to sacrifice this sequence for the sake of nit-picky consistency with another film.

So many great screencaps!!

-Bombur being fitted with armor
-Bombur being gripped by (what appear to be) green screen talons
-Bifur riding an eagle!
-dwarves and people carrying goods in Dale (pre-dragon?)
-barrels with Laketown in the background (notice the fish skewered on Bifur's head-axe)
-Thorin leading the dwarves out of the "gate". You can see his sword/arm/head ahead of the company.
-Legolas is carrying a sword!

The scale of the Eagle should be larger if you recall Gandalf atop Orthanc and the rescue of Frodo and Sam.
I think the CGI will take care of the scale issue.

This is some epic stuff here. Dale, Heirs of Durin, dwarves in full armor, stone giants...My goodness. Best vlog yet.

One thing: I don't think the dwarf army is from Azanulbizar. Rather, I think these scenes come from a flashback showing the defense of the Lonely Mountain from Smaug's first attack... This is largely because the setting seems to be a very built, dwarven environment, and we even get a quick shot of a dwarf on a throne (likely Thror) as well as an advisor of sorts.

Outside the gates of Moria would, I think, look very different.

Thoughts?

But does anyone else think it's Radagast that says, "Why? Where are you going?"

A lot of people at Comic Con speculated that it was Bilbo, but Gandalf wasn't around the company when they were in Mirkwood, and Gandalf seems to have just survived a battle (Thrain?). I'm thinking this is after Gandalf's initial visit to Dol Guldur.

Love the dwarf masks on the dwarven soldiers! [In reply to] Can't Post

Excellent bit of detail, which draws on descriptions in the Sil...

I am now quite convinced that these particular scenes are not from Azanulbizar, nor from BofA (as we have an armourless Thorin, with the very same dwarf sword he has before the trollshaws) but from a scene depicting a defensive act against Smaug's first attack on Erebor.

I also think that the reason we have been given such an extensively detailed and massive set of Dale, is that we will see a lot of action there in an extended flashback that includes Bard, etc. AND help from dwarven soldiers, who may enter Dale to help protect it from Smaug. That help from the dwarves might feed into why the people of Laketown revere Thorin and Company so much when they arrive...

Otherwise, I cannot see why PJ and company would have spent so much money, time and effort on such a massive set. We will be seeing lots of drama there, I think.

Yes it was nice to see Lee Pace. I've never seen him in anything before (apparently I will this November 21 as he is named in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt 2.) He seems very reserved personality wise.

I agree too that it was nice seeing Legolas. At first glance his costume and equipment looks very much like what we saw in LOTR.

And if that isn't Tauriel, it must be her double... she looks very much like Kate in the face but also in the way she moves. (Good catch!)

Suggestive and shadowy, like something out of a dream.

This vlog gives me hope The Hobbit will have the necessary fairy tale feeling that makes it unique - and poignant, once the political side of the last half comes into play.

The tone/aesthetic should be a lot different from the nature vs. industry play of the first LotR film (though that was very beautiful too).

I agree it looks great. The view shown must be from a prologue or when Thorin talks about how Smaug came to reside in Erebor.

The VO (not sure whose voice it was) said it looked Moroccan or Italian... Mediterranean covers it I think. (And now I wonder if we were looking at Dale here at all?)

Seeing the sets, and in light of PJ's comments, it makes me wonder what all the fuss was recently about not using miniatures (or bigatures) as they did in LOTR.

Well Hadafang was invented by PJ and co for LOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

so they have absolute control of its provenance. IIRC it was made for an ancestor of Elrond's, passed from him to Arwen. It was wielded by Elrond in the prologue of LOTR so it is unlikely that he gave it to Thranduil before giving it to Arwen.

Unless it was intended for the eldest elf daughter in the entire family? Perhaps then he did give it to Thranduil who then gave it to Tauriel, and upon her death it passed back to Elrond to give to Arwen, assuming she is next in line (according to age or family line)? In any event, again they can do whatever they want since it is an invented sword... ending up in the hands of an invented character should not be a problem at all.

ETA: of course he may be just practising with a sword that happened to be at hand. The dwarfs were using bokken during their axe (combat) training. Or perhaps it is a twin to Hadafang... one for Arwen, the other for Tauriel?

From what I've read, I think that Peter and Fran made a decision that only Peter would be in the spotlight, so that the effect on their family life could be minimised as much as possible. So although Fran is a very active partner in the scripts and production side (I believe she even did some directing in LotR - the snow on Mount Caradhas), she stays out of limelight.

She was there to accept the Oscars with Peter and is on the director's commentaries for the DVDs.

To me [In reply to] Can't Post

I've always viewed the stone giants kind of like an extension of the way American Indians viewed many things in nature, attributing human elements to them in their stories etc. The Stone Giants were essentially the source of the thunder in the storm via their boulder throwing etc. They were closely tied with the embodiment of the storm itself, and to that end they were exactly the reason the crew took shelter in what they thought was just a cave. That kind of outlook also explains why they were never seen at other times as well and weren't regular "bad guys" per se.

We see what is presumably Thrain later on in the blog (scraggly hair/beard, diseased skin), and he looks nothing like the dwarf running alongside Thorin.

I'm thinking it's Dain, and it's no stretch that PJ would have reworked the BoFA to have these two kings fighting alongside each other,

Not a battleground [In reply to] Can't Post

Agreed, this doesn't look remotely like they are outside Moria, but rather inside somewhere heading out, and I can't think where else that would be besides Erebor (there are quills on a desk to the left). It jacks with canon to have Thorin of fighting age at the coming of Smaug, but that's what I'm leaning toward for now. With all the little (and major) changes they have made so far, it would not surprise me.

Still can't decide if that is Dain, Thrain, or someone else next to Thorin.

RE: [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, it goes to show that there are other forces at work in Middle-earth that AREN'T tied to Sauron or some other prominently featured character.

Why aren't they found anywhere in LOTR? Because the giants are present in the northern end of the Misty Mountains, a location that the Fellowship avoids visiting, and they're too far away from Mordor, Moria, or Isengard to be of any direct relevance there.

And why doesn't anyone try to use the Stone-Giants? Because they're Stone-Giants! Who would try to manipulate something that overly destructive and powerful? Imagine the trouble Melkor must have had dealing with Ungoliant in "The Silmarillion". Now imagine the trouble Sauron would have keeping a bunch of giants under his control without tearing his armies to pieces.

Or perhaps they did participate in the War of the Ring on Sauron's side, but we didn't see any of that happen because they were just too far away from the setting of the story. Either way, they're not going to show up in a story just because they exist in its universe. It's like why you never see certain planets, aliens, or technology in the Star Wars movies, even though they exist in the overall mythology of the franchise.

Too much awesome! [In reply to] Can't Post

Rhosgobel! Dale! Dwarf warriors (from a flashback to the fall of Erebor)? Hints of Tauriel and Radagast...And our first good look at an Orc (NOT a Goblin, very reminiscent of Sauron's mooks from the trilogy...perhaps Legolas/Tauriel fighting the forces of the Necromancer)?

And Stone Giants! Made of stone...that's sort-of bizarre, isn't it? In any case, very cool! Smile

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

It's a fair criticism [In reply to] Can't Post

It's the same logic that leads to the justifiable questions "why didn't they just have the army of dead sweep into mordor, killing all the orcs" (Jackson had them clear out Minas Tirith in the film, which wasn't in the books, but made more sense, in my opinion), or "why don't the eagles just fly in and drop the ring in Mount Doom" (seeing as they can combat the nazgul quite well, and that would effectively be Sauron's only line of defense against flying creatures).

The force of nature logic works for some things, but it is a bit plot convenient when the so called 'force of nature' more often than not will give allegiance to the protagonists when they need it in convenient moments.

The eagles are a deus ex machina, for sure. Tolkien was an amazing world building, thematic writer. Narratively though, there are a lot of moments that are 'on the nose', so to speak.

If it takes more rationalizing to explain why those creatures *aren't* involved, then there's probably something off.

However, I'm talking more about creatures as a whole rather than specifically the stone giants, or say the Watcher in Fellowship of the Ring. Those don't irk me, and I can buy the 'they just weren't around'. Those flying deus ex machina Eagles though ..

Decently gritty [In reply to] Can't Post

All the battle scenes involving sieges are filmed in a pretty 'gritty' manner. Flying decapitated heads, crumbling city walls, ultra violence. It's also all handled very seriously and straight-faced. It's as Peter said, about handling the material as if they were filming a documentary in the location that it happened.

I guess for reference an un-gritty handling of fantastical warware might be Narnia films.

Thorin, Thrain, Erebor, Dale etc. [In reply to] Can't Post

Shelob'sAppetite writes: "Excellent bit of detail, which draws on descriptions in the Sil...

We will be seeing lots of drama there, I think."

I agree Thorin is certainly younger here, so it can't be the BoFA. I would love this to be the battle of Az., but I don't think it is either. For it to be the coming of Smaug re-writes everything, but I don't see why pre-Smaug Dale would be given a set the size of Minas Tirith if they weren't going to do something like what you said.

The more I look at these shots below, the more I think that is Thrain next to Thorin (missing eye and all). Thrain is supposed to lose his eye in the battle of Azanulbizar, but whatever Crazy The second would be Thrain after the Necromancer gets a hold of him. Yick!

PJ you've made my day! I was practically hyperventilating when I saw this! This film is going to be magnificent, I can already tell I'm going to enjoy it 10 times more than LOTR! Jeez, this whole video was so beautiful Heart

Those stone giants are fantastic, you really get the enormous sense of scale, like a force of nature brought to life.

That dwarf army must be a flashback, Thorin has a different coat and darker hair. I don't think that can be Dain with him, he's too old - maybe Nain? Would make sense for Dain to inherit his father's weapon. Those dwarf lords in their furs and finery look great, as do the armoured soldiers!

Can't get enough of those absolutely breathtaking sets. They have really outdone themselves: Rhosgobel, Beorn's house, Goblin town, and Dale! Oh, Dale is just exquisite. I wonder how it will feature?

I'm so glad to see little details such as Gollum's boat, the honeycomb and carvings in Beorn's house, the Mirkwood elves wearing autumn colours. Radagast is going to be a very lovable character I can see, and Tauriel and Galadriel both look gorgeous (though in the former's case also like a warrior!)

Finally, the cameos of eagles and wargs make me eager for the next trailer, to be in full CGI please and thank you Wink

What a wondrous journey this must have been with all those extraordinarily agreeable people, cast and crew. Beside my excitement this made me quite sad. My tears were a mixture of joy and desolation....

the contrast to dale and laketown [In reply to] Can't Post

I think by showing how splendid Dale was back in its heyday will help greatly contrast to laketown's current state and the more subdued and fearful state of Man during the Hobbit. Imagine those glorious Dale flashbacks in comparison to the corrupt and seething city on the lake.

Also I think that despite Dale having a funky Mediterranean vibe, I believe the art direction is meant to reflect maybe a breezier time in Middle Earth history and also the filmmakers trying to differentiate this society as compared to others in The Hobbit and in LOTR.

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair; and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."-J.R.R. Tolkien

IMO, it was a very poor story-telling decision by PJ and company, which cheapened the entire battle of the Pelennor...

I think of Dale [In reply to] Can't Post

As a Roman city in Britain, such as Bath.

In that context, its destruction, followed by the movement of its peoples from a stone city to a wooden one, mirrors the movement of native Britons from "haunted" Roman cities, to wooden ones built right outside the abandoned city. This happened almost without fail in post-Roman Britain, from Bath to Londinium.

In that sense, even if the film-makers did not intend it (though I suspect Alan Lee and John Howe did), I love the parallels. Quite appropriate.

I would almost say with certainty that what we see here in the background is Thorin's tomb.

1. It looks like a tomb. A Stone bier, similar to the one Denethor burns himself on, only with a decidedly dwarven aesthetic.
2. There are long stone lamp-posts surrounding it, with candles on top. This suggests a place that will be hallowed.
3. Ori seems to be wearing dwarven chain-mail, which must be the gear he acquires in the Lonely Mountain horde.

That's a pretty massive spoiler right there...Think PJ's team missed it?

Looks to be Fili and Kili in a burned out Dale, judging by the Roman-looking ruin and fresco behind them, as well as clear evidence of fire.

My overwhelming impression from this vlog [In reply to] Can't Post

is that the cast and crew have had a blast making these films. :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Yep [In reply to] Can't Post

While I loved the trilogy the army of the dead sequence just wasn't handled well in my opinion. It seems like a bit of a cop out to have people who can't be killed winning the battle. It kind of lessened the importance of the rohirrim and everything else.

I think they should have extended the entire thing as well. They should have had the whole stone of erech thing in there and just had it to where the army of the dead defeated the corsairs allowing Aragorn to take an army of southern gondorians on the ships with him.

That's definitely McCoy responding to McKellen.

Gandalf: I need a horse.
Radagast: Why...where are you going?
Gandalf: In search of answers.

Looks like this takes place in Mirkwood. Seems to me that Rhosgobel will be situated inside Mirkwood, rather than on the eaves...My guess is that Gandalf has a chat with him in the hovel, and then decides he must go to Dol Guldur at once.

Dain or Thrain, and a Dwarven wall gathers no moss [In reply to] Can't Post

Billy Connolly also said Dain had tattoos on his head. I've the feeling his mohawk would be of the more radical type. But I could be wrong about the whole thing.

What really intrigues me are the gouges on the walls in this shot, and even more, what looks like moss growing in them. How did these get there? If this was Erebor at the height of dwarven rule, why would they leave such blemishes in their walls long enough for moss to grow? They are stone masons. They would fix something like that if it was in a prominent spot.

Great spot DarkJackal, and I agree, it can't be at the xenith of Dwarven Erebor.. I'd hesitate a guess: [In reply to] Can't Post

It's some of the Iron Hill dwarves quick marching out of the gates of Erebor (could it be anywhere else? ? ) for some reason.... I'd not say Bo5A... summat else.

Plus, the gouges, safe bet: Done by Smaug in his sacking of the Lonely Mountain? ?

Only because Legolas never says anything to Gimli (on screen anyway) about the battle, or his father.

If Thranduil came to accept Thorin and the company, you would think that Legolas would've been friendlier to Gimli.

Blog #8 Transcript [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ: So, welcome to our latest blog. We're driving to Comic-Con with butterflies in my stomach. Presenting footage for the first time is always a slightly intimidating and slightly scary thing. Plus, I've got to face a day of interviews. But another 10 hours and it will all be behind us.

PJ (entering interview room): So hopefully we'll find Ian and Richard in here somewhere.

Quick cuts to cast members, then PJ being interviewed: "The Hobbit certainly is more funny..."

PJ: (exiting the room) One interview down!

PJ and panel members in elevator.
PJ: When I call you guys up on stage...
Ian: Are we coming out one at a time?
PJ: Yes.

PJ voiceover: I saw on TheOneRing this morning that people have been camping out since Wednesday to get into Hall H. Those are the sorts of people that I like hanging out with.

To camera: I'm going to be going on soon and I've been recruited to do some blog filming with my iPhone. Because this camera isn't allowed on stage. But nobody's going to stop me shooting with my iPhone.

Announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage Peter Jackson!

PJ: Let's bring up a few of our friends that we have here. Philippa Boyens...Andy Serkis...Richard Armitage...Martin Freeman...Sir Ian McKellen...we also have a surprise guest, Elijah Wood.

Brazilian fan: I love you guys, I came all the way from Brazil just because of you.
PJ (in background): Thank you.
Brazil: I spent all my money on this trip but it was worth it.

PJ voiceover: These are the people that we're making the film for and I'm really happy that it was received in such a great way.

PJ to crowd: I'd just like you to do something for all the people that couldn't be here. Could you just say Hi from Comic-Con. 1...2...3!
Crowd: Hi from Comic-Con!
PJ: Fantastic, no need for a Take 2. That was bl***y good!

To blog camera: And so now we would like to show you a little bit of what we showed the audience in Hall H.

(2:35) PJ: That's great. Cut.

PJ: Welcome to the last five days of our shoot. It's a bittersweet kind of a moment. (On set, to Andy Serkis): Feels like I'm still at the foot of the mountain.
It's a little difficult to do a wrap out on our last bit of shooting because so much of what we've been doing recently is Film 2, which is obviously secret. But we'll show you little bits and pieces, little snippets, and there will be a lot of more of what we've been doing that we'll save up for future blogs.

Mark Hadlow: Hey, Comic-Con fans, how are you? This is Dori, coming live from the set of The Hobbit. Stay classy, San Diego!

John Callen: Hi Comic-Con, John Callen here. I play Oin in The Hobbit.

Uncredited woman: Welcome my sister-sons to Comic-Con

Graham McTavish: Hi, this is Dwalin saying a big Hi to all of you in Comic-Con. Greetings from the very heart of Middle-earth. The really amazing moment for me I guess was the first time we stepped onto Bag End. It's become so embedded in your psyche from what you've seen before. We're all ready to go and Ian came on for the first time. And you look at him and you go, "My god, that's Gandalf!"

Jed Brophy: I look back on that with fondness because we got to know each other on Bag End and we really got to know each other as dwarves.

Adam Brown: Hi Comic-Con, it's Adam Brown here, aka Ori, from The Hobbit set. One of the most exciting things I think, for me, was working on these sets that are kind of a part of our history. And there was I, working on Rivendell with some incredible actors.

John Howe: Just watching Cate Blanchett act, it was very moving, we had shivers down our spines. It was absolutely astonishing.

Cate: It's been a privilege being back in Middle-earth.

Lee Pace: Hey Comic-Con, hope you're having a good time. My name is Lee Pace, I play the Elven-king Thranduil. Some of the work that I really loved was with Terry Notary who designs movement for the different races. And the way the Elves move is very different than the way the Dwarves move, obviously. It was really fun to get into that character, and really move in a way that is not human.

Hayden Weal: Sylvester McCoy who played Radagast is the loveliest, loveliest man.

Sylvester McCoy (playing the spoons) : I need people.

PJ: I think that Sylvester's going to be one of the delights of these movies.

Sylvester: The "Real McCoy".

John Howe: I remember going out to Taunton(?) and wandering through the hundred meters of forest that they built and seeing Rhosgobel, which is Radagast's house.

Genevieve Cooper: Radagast's character was a lovely spirited wizard and his house really reflected his character beautifully.

Andy Serkis: Dale was beautiful. It really was. It was like being in another country.

Belindalee Hope: It was very Moroccan, Turkish sort of...Italian, yeah...

Alan Lee: Dale was one of the larger sets.

PJ: It rivals some of the biggest sets we've ever built, which would have been Minas Tirith and Helm's Deep, I guess, in the old days.

John Howe: The city of Dale was such a huge set, you were able to just wander around as if you were in some abandoned city you've always wanted to visit.

Nathan Meister: The most fun I've had on set would probably be the goblins. Goblin Town, the sets just seemed to be really sharp and really angular and lots of flames and lots of bones.

Victoria Sullivan: We were introduced to the Great Goblin.

PJ:
Barry Humphries is something of an iconic legend in this part of the world and I've seen two or three of his Dame Edna stage shows and Barry and the Goblin King just seemed to be a natural fit.

Barry: Have you seen the pile of intestines?
Andy: Ooh, no, but I'll go and check them out.

John Howe:
I don't know if anyone's home but we'll soon see.

Richard Armitage: I found Beorn's house absolutely mesmerizing. It's one of my favorite parts of the book. And the creation...the carving that they did inside that beautiful barn, and everything was so oversized.

Martin: I want to write the theme tune, sing the theme tune...

PJ: We built it to the scale of the dwarves so it was huge. And it made all of us feel small. I used to be able to stand on that set and look at the crew setting up the camera and they looked like tiny little people, it was kind of incredible.

Andy, in a barrel: Morning, everyone! Happy last day. Morning! What we're doing for this shot, is we're going to get Orlando up on here... has somebody stuck something to my back? What is it?

Laurie Wright: Second Unit, I think we're a bit of the rock and roll unit and you know, we have a bit of fun.

Crew member 1#: Greg's shorts, I think. They're a bit high.
Greg: Just loop it, bro, just loop it. No problem.
Crew member #2: I'm disturbed.
Crew member #3: It's like an eight-year-old schoolboy.
Greg: What do you mean, it's like an eight-year-old schoolboy?

Andy and crew member jamming on saxophones.
Orlando Bloom: He's a rock star.

PJ: He has got energy to burn and that infectious enthusiasm and his absolute dedication made a huge difference to the Second Unit.

Andy: And...crank it up! And in 3...2...1...action! And..cut! That is a wrap for the Second Unit.

Liz Tan:
There is a mixture of emotions.

James Rua:
Good to finish, but sad at the same time.

Andy: Quite frankly, I can't imagine this occurring anywhere else on the planet, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

RA: One of the memories that really sticks in my head the most is walking in through the gates of Stone Street at 4:45 in the morning when it's dark and there's no one else here and the stars are still out and then slowly the studio comes to life and the sun comes up. I saw a lot of those days.

Tony Keddy: You're going to be getting up at 5:30 in the morning for a year and a half. At least 12 hours a day.

PJ: You literally just wake up every morning and go shoot a movie. And it seems to last a lifetime.

Tami Lane:
This is the kind of movie where it changes everybody's lives. What we do is kind of driven by adrenaline so we keep going until we collapse.
Katy Fray: We've got ready about 20 people a day and that's about 5000 prosthetic makeups.
Tami: We're busy, but sometimes we get bored being busy.

Rick Findlater:
Within the last 18 months, we've probably gone through about 20 liters of glue, about 450 miles of yak hair, hence there are now a lot of cold yaks in the Himalayas somewhere.

Peter King: I've never worked on such a hairy movie. Even I'm sporting a beard now and I've never had a beard before so it's obviously sort of rubbing off somewhere along the line.

Hamish Brown: Just the sheer amount of lead characters with costumes...for some reason they all want to wear costumes. They all want pants, they all want shoes...it made for an enormous amount of costumes.

Emma Harre:
All of these clothes, to nearly the back of the truck is Bilbo.

Sean Golding:
For Smaug's lair, we used so much gold paint, we used everything in Australasia. We had to get it from Germany. Wunderbar!

Anthony Pratt: 22,817,520 feet if we were shooting 35mil like this. And I'm really glad we're not.

John Howe: I'm sure that I've done over 2500 drawings. I kept my pencil stubs.

Alan Lee: You're literally doing a drawing one day and then walking on the set a few days later.

Ra Vincent: We shoot a set, take it out and replace it for the very next day's shoot.

PJ: They put up the most incredible sets. You walk in the night before and it's not finished, and you think, "My god, how are we ever going to be in here tomorrow filming, and you walk in at 8 o'clock the next morning and it's ready to go.

Dan Hennah: To me that's probably one of the most gratifying things on this whole picture, that all these people force through impossible odds and create these beautiful things.

Martin Freeman: I'll miss the camaraderie of the folks that we've built up. And the cast and crew, you know we've spent an awful long time together, there's like, sort of 12 or 13 of us who have been in a mini army.

PJ:
They're all people I would love to work with again. Fantastic cast.

Mark Hadlow: I'm surrounded by these mates, I'm surrounded by my comrades, I'm surrounded by these great actors.

Dwalin:
Please. Not every time. Get off. They're so, I mean...
Graham McTavish: You get so close that you're able to freely abuse them on a daily basis and they don't seem to mind.

Martin: (on set) And that's the poster! (to camera) They're a very high quality of human beings involved.

Peter Hambleton: Pretty soon we won't be all together as a gang, which is going to be sad. We'll all miss each other terribly.

Brigitte Yorke: You're getting to come to work with a group of people that you love working with, that you love hanging out with, it's a real family.

Uncredited: What's in our laundry? Look at that!
Uncredited: My undies! Red-handed!

Crew member: What happens on The Hobbit stays on The Hobbit.

PJ: Finishing up in Mirkwood today.

Crew member: It's the old ?, finish with a bang.

Camera 1: I'm gonna miss you.
Camera 2: I'm gonna miss you, man!

PJ: 'K, and action!
Gandalf: I need a horse!
Bilbo (or Radagast): Why? Where are you going?
Gandalf: In search of answers!
PJ: All right, and cut. Well unless anybody has anything else they want to shoot, I think we should call that a day. Thank you.

PJ: Well, obviously I just want to say thank you to everybody. An incredible cast, an incredible crew. It seems like a lifetime ago that I had to do the speech at the beginning of the shoot. Oh god, that was a long time ago. You know, as a director, it can be kind of a lonely job. At times you feel like you're by yourself trying to solve problems but then everybody steps in and suddenly I realize I've got this incredible support and all of you guys have got my back and you're behind me and for that I'm incredibly grateful. Thank you.

voice: I think there's bubbles right next door!

PJ: There's been a terrific atmosphere, shooting this movie, and I hope the blogs have in some way given you all a chance to share in that and to experience it for yourselves. And we'll be continuing in post-production. The energy, the environment, everything's going to be very very different but it's still got an equal amount of challenges. So, look forward to seeing you during post-production. It's just lemonade, honestly.

Photographer: Come on, show some love. Put your arm around the person next to you.

To be continued....

Those are the runes used on the Map. [In reply to] Can't Post

Which differ from the runes found in the LotR appendices (which were of Elvish origin, rather than Dwarvish**).

So in order to be true to The Hobbit, they will have to use the system based on the Erebor runes!

**Edited to amend this: Daeron invented the runes, the Dwarves adapted them for their own uses. The Erebor runes are a variation of the runic system found in the Appendices.

As I said before [In reply to] Can't Post

why shouldn't it be Nain, Dain's father? He fought at the battle of Azanulbizar and was killed, therefore the very young Dain took control and slew Azog in revenge. Why shouldn't Dain have inherited his father's weapon as well as hit title then?

Yes, my guess is that this is Nain [In reply to] Can't Post

Nain has a red hammer, and Dain has a red axe...Together, they are RED DWARF.

If so, it is likely that what we are seeing is indeed the Battle of Azanulbizar. But the setting seems wrong. So, is it possible that PJ and company have conflated the attack on Erebor by Smaug, with the Battle of Azanulbizar? Perhaps this attack includes not just Smaug, but a horde of Goblins as well, led by Azog?

This would seem to justify the massive Dale set, etc. Perhaps we are getting a full-scale, extended flashback of Smaug AND Azog's attack on Erebor and Dale, with goblins running through the streets and attacking soldiers and civilians, and Smaug raining fiery death from above?

I think this is indeed possible. And to explain the moss growing on some of those Ereborian walls, perhaps PJ will imply that the dwarven realm was in decline, and thus was unprepared for the attack? Sort of like the barbarians at the gates of a diminished Rome?

I hope this is not the case, as I want to see Azanulbizar at the foot of the Misty Mountains, where it belongs...

I've seen him in The Fall and Soldier's Girl. He was excellent in both movies but I think more challenging was his role in Soldier's Girl where he plays transexual dancer and singer who falls in love with a soldier of US army. He had to move, talk, dance and act like a woman. He did really good job in this movie.

Legolas' costume: Yeah, looks almost like the one from LOTR. I also want to see him in some royal outfit.

I know nothing about Evangeline, never really watched Lost, and don't really care if that's her or not, and I'm only looking at the examples which have been posted here, BUT I think you're right based on these images (yes, I'm using the one that Shelob provided as proof that it was not her, but which I think proves it is her):

When I made one semi-transparent and overlaid the two, they matched almost perfectly. Her head is just a bit further tilted away in one, so it won't be exact,. The massive pixelation on the vlog image accounts for the slight distorted look of the nose.

I'm pretty sure [In reply to] Can't Post

the line, 'And that's the post' is meant to be 'And that's the poster' - referencing the image of Steven (Bomber) backing into a man behind him in an inadvertantly unfortunate way...

Wink

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Stoking the Evangeline Lilly Discussion Fire.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think that's Evangeline's body/stunt double (i.e.- Ninja Girl) because her mannerism doesn't seem to match Evangeline's personality. Her lips seem different (thinner) also.

It may be worthwhile to watch Evangeline in a non-acting video (such as in an interview) to see if she gives off the same vibe.

Sorry DanielLB, to have stirred the embers to keep this discussion going ;0).

They show the same woman doing a stunt with ropes attached to her waist. It was a bit earlier in the Vlog. This is what pushed me toward the stunt double rather than EL herself.

I definitely heard it as 'and that's the poster!'. Please, please could someone make a Hobbit poster out of that shot? And possibly a T-shirt? I'd buy it.

While I was kinda sore that we saw very little of the film footage aired at the Con, [In reply to] Can't Post

I still greatly enjoyed everything that I saw. Great stuff. Kept expecting Lilly Tomlin's Edith Ann to be sitting in one of Beorn's giant chairs. Lol.

Love that Peter sent a huge hello to everyone who didn't make ComicCon.

Also, we learnded some things. There can now be little doubt that the Dol Guldur timeline will conclude well befor BOFArmies, and that Gandalf WILL be present in Thranduil's war camp, as we see him standing in one of the tents during the blog. This could be misleading, but I think the hypothesis is sound.

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Wow. I think this production video is my new favorite!

Rhosgobel! I love it.

I'm beside myself. This movie is going to be fantastic. My excitement for Thorin's Company is doubled by every video. PJ has really picked the best cast. The fellas really seem to get along great, and that friendship will certainly come across onscreen and make our experience that much more enjoyable.

Dissonance [In reply to] Can't Post

My facial recognition skills are abysmal so I won't weigh in*, but I think it's interesting that people can have such certainty in such diametrically opposed opinions over a simple matter of empirical fact. Maybe they just did a really good job of making the stunt doubles look like the actors they replace? The high resolution and 3d mean they'll need to.

*I've known this at some level for a long time, but was finally able to prove it when I took this test and scored way below average. Crazy

Wait... why?? [In reply to] Can't Post

I know this is an old thread, but I had a slow reaction. Sauron doesn't have The Ring in that painting in LotR. Probably because not many people really know about The Ring in Rivendell... do they? (I thought that's why Gandalf goes to Minas Tirith to research it. It's not like a big known thing. And I assumed that that was the reason no-one suspected Bilbo's ring... or am I wrong?) So what significance will this picture have in The Hobbit? Will Bilbo see the Ring in this picture? Someone must mention it, and if they do will they not realise Bilbo has the same ring? Crazy
