No third "Hobbit" film .....? Can't Post

As reported in the link below, apparently there are rumours going round ComicCon of a third "Hobbit" film (possibly TABA split in two).

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118056497

Quote

Hours into Comic-Con, one rumor kept circulating around San Diego: that Peter Jackson was going to announce a third "Hobbit" film during Warner Bros.' Saturday panel for the fantasy pics.

For those at ComicCon, has this rumour actually been going round?

Who even spread the rumour? Surely the whole point of Old Bilbo & Frodo (and to some extent Galadriel and Saruman) is to link the 5 films together.

I know the storyline of the third movie... [In reply to] Can't Post

Its narrative runs alongside The Hobbit and LotR and stars Peter Jackson as the main character. The story attempts to better link The Hobbit and the LotR movies with each other, by revealing that all of Peter Jackson's cameos are the same character.

It follows the story of an innocent Laketown man who gets swept off to Bree and later finds himself battling for Rohan before eventually becoming a pirate where his story meets a tragic end.

if "An Unexpected Journey" does well at the box office.... [In reply to] Can't Post

there's no telling what the studios may decide to do.

It might be cool if they threw in deleted or extra scenes onto the DVD for "There and Back Again" as stand-alone clips (i.e. - not part of the movie itself).

It would even be interesting to see deleted scene's from "Return of the King" such as Eowyn and Faramir's wedding.

This sort of thing may work better as a stand-alone retrospective DVD of extra footage from the combined Hobbit and LOTR films. Maybe title it "The Book of Years," and organize the scenes as clips from the appendices.

...did you feel the same way about the cartoon versions - the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings (some of it) and the Rankin Bass Hobbit? Is it the whole idea of adapting Tolkien's work for the screen that you don't like, or just the way Peter Jackson adapted Lord of the Rings? (His adaptation of The Hobbit you surely can't pass a final judgement on since no one really knows what it is yet. I appreciate that there are probably aspects of what we already do know of it that you aren't keen on.)

Funny, isn't it - I can't stand the Rankin Bass film. It's appalling, there isn't one thing I like about it. Whatever Peter Jackson does, for me it couldn't be worse than that.

Bakshi I quite enjoyed when I saw it (I remember dragging my mother to the cinema with me - she really didn't like it!) - until it just fizzled out mid-story. I was so disappointed by that that I've never looked at it again.

I will hold to my firm suspicion that he is filming "tie-ins" with LotR in order to create a full thematic bridge between them, releasing it in a big ultimate collection! A man can dream... I don't know that I ever saw the R-B ROTK adaptation.

And I also (mostly) like the Bakshi version.

What I don't like is the idea of making up a bunch of Middle-earth junk just to make another film. And that's the only reason I can think of for why a third film would be made, because they've done all the Tolkien material for which they have the filming rights.

I doubt if there ever was a possibility of a third Hobbit film... [In reply to] Can't Post

... it was only a rumour and probably not a very realistic one. As they've already structured the adaptation for two films it would be pretty late in the day to change.

I may be losing my way in all this, it's happening so fast, but the rumour of a third film seems to have come from the suggestion that they will have lots of unused footage. that is presumably Hobbit or Dol Guldur, some straight out of the book, some made-up to fill out the story. But then there's the other quotation from Peter Jackson about wanting permission to film more next year. What he was actually quoted as saying, in the LA Times article was this:

Quote

As slight as people think the “Hobbit” novel is, compared to the “Lord of the Rings” books, we have been surprised at how rich the world is, and how many interesting themes and characters there are to explore. We are also using extensive parts of the appendices which were published at the end of “Return of the King.” This is not just ”The Hobbit” — it’s “The Hobbit” set in a much greater context of events taking place throughout Middle-earth during this period. The material is so rich. In fact only this last week or two, we’ve been talking to the studio about allowing us to shoot some additional material next year, to fully complete the story.

...whatever he meant by this, he does seem to be talking about using Tolkien material, not made-up stuff. I think.

I took it a different way [In reply to] Can't Post

That they could film some scenes to help tie in the gap between the hobbit and the lord of the rings, these could be extra scenes created for TH movie. As SA states its not like they have to create a new film.

Either way, i wouldnt want them to make up loads of scenes if they were not going to use material that they own the rights to - i.e. fan fiction. I think it would end badly as i didnt like that many of PJ's extras from LOTR.

But as we all know there isnt going to be a bridge film made, i just didnt take what was said as to me that. Again a difference of opinion with you.

I think he meant [In reply to] Can't Post

That there was so much rich backstory material they were drawing on for film 2 (like, perhaps, the history of Dale and the Iron Mountain dwarves, Azanulbizar, etc) that they now want to do more filming to flesh that material out...

My guess is that PJ's request will be granted.

I hope so.

While I originally wanted a rather pure Hobbit, with no extraneous background, my interest in seeing dwarven historical detail on screen has grown and grown.

Somehow, I don’t think so — aren't pickups just reshoots?

Why would Jackson have to go back to the studios to request more shooting for something he’d already planned? He wouldn’t.

That said, I don’t we should expect to see a flashback of Glaurung coming to the Nargothrond. :)

Maybe we’ll see Galadriel cleansing Dol Guldur during the War of the Ring, though.
