But he has grown on me. He's certainly not my favourite dwarf, both in terms of looks and the character itself. In that respect, I'm not that bothered whether he looks like a traditional dwarf or not. While I still like him the least, he has grown on me, and I think he looks great in the promotional shot.
I think a lot of people were put off by this poor photoshop job:

LOL! When the percentage of your female population is only 1/3 of the total, you do whatever you can to impress them!
I also like to think he is taking pity on the sword-obsessed by finally giving us a good look at the whole blade. It's been almost a year since the teaser photo of it.

...and I still don't understand. Kili is nothing like an elf. He has a moustache and beard, albeit a slight one. And though I know Tolkien's elves had dark as well as fair hair, in terms of the film designs he doesn't look remotely elf-like because the film elves all use such effective hair straighteners.
He's not much like Gimli was, it's true, and if that's your image of a dwarf then I can see there's a problem but one thing's for sure, he ain't no elf.

Though I apologized for the misinterpretation.
Nonetheless, I'm not sure I insulted anyone, or have ever deliberately insulted anyone. My inclination is to focus on the issues being discussed, not the people discussing them. I get a bit agitated when people turn the focus to the poster, rather than the post, and that is at the root of this most recent outburst of sorts.
Re: dwarf looks.
Kili: He is also my least favorite dwarf, though I have certainly gotten used to him. I also think the costume design is very effective, which at least gives the illusion of him being a dwarf.
Fili: I really like Fili's design, all around. He was not nearly my favorite when the original promos were released, but he's now one of my favorites (particularly since he's not over-burdened with prosthetics). That's what a young dwarf should look like!
Dori: I just realized how Japanese-inspired his hair and beard seem to be. There's something quite samurai about him, and it works.
Nori: I also like his look more and more. Ridiculous hairdos were common among Dark Age peoples of all sorts (particularly those who could afford to fuss), and I don't see why dwarves couldn't be consistent with that. He also looks very convincing with his hood on.
Thorin: He is my favorite dwarf of the bunch, design-wise (and actor-wise, though I also love Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and think Graham McTavish has lots of potential).
I have to say, I hope the dwarves wear their hoods for a good portion of the films, as it truly does suit them!
Re: Gollum
As others have noted, he looks almost exactly as he did in the Forbidden Pool, when Frodo calls out to him. Remember, he did get a bit cutesy after he banished his alter-ego, and perhaps he will have more of that personality in the Hobbit. Probably because it's a still-frame, he does seem a tad more cartoonish than I remember, but I'm not worried that WETA won't deliver on this front.

Bilbo looks very creepy there - like he's a little too happy to see me.... Though I do not see what's wrong with Gandalf. He looks great, as usual.
Re: Mirkwood
No matter what final colors come through, I'm not a big fan of the forest's design (as far as I have seen it). It all looks far too much like an artificial movie set, and I was rather hoping to get something more realistic.
All in all, I'm quite excited by a few measly pictures in a magazine. Am I crazy?

Though I do not see what's wrong with Gandalf. He looks great, as usual. It's the hair - not sure exactly, but it looks like he's had to much hairspray or something. Why is it so light (as in weight, not brightness) and airy? And I really don't like how they've shrunk Bilbo into that corner. Is it supposed to be to scale?

I'm on the same page as several others here in that, while originally I didn't think Kili looked very dwarf-like (too lean, quite pointed features, silky hair and virtually no beard), his design has grown on me and I'm much more accepting of it now having seen him in the vlogs and such. I've never been as sceptical about Fili but my first impression wasn't that great either - now I love his look and have no problem with it. After all, where does it say that the dwarves are a completely homogeneous race? There can't be thirteen Gimli clones.
I was just commenting on how it struck me that in that picture, with their hoods on and so forth, they look very dwarfish, and that my opinion of them has come a long way since the early days.

But did feel that there were certain baselines to uphold - such as all of them having relatively long beards.
I still think Fili, Kili and Bofur should have more substantial facial hair, but can certainly live with them.
Also, I think the design team outdid themselves with creating some truly distinctive looks. This will make for a much more interesting film than it may have otherwise, IMO.
My guess is that despite Bifur's ridiculous axe-head ornament, and Bombur's overdone fat suit, they will be fan favorites...
And Kili will be loved by the 13-17 year old female crowd.

...but I really detest the "thirteen Gimli clones" thing. Weta, and the design team overall are very creative; I'm sure they could have come up with a more dwarf-like design without it coming across as merely cloning Gimli (something which I think they managed splendidly with the truely dwarf-looking dwarves of the company; Balin, Dwalin, Glóin, Óin, Dori, Nori...all dwarf-looking, yet no clones). Even something more than a five-o-clock shadow would go a long way.

As i said to DanielLB, i think its interesting to see how other people's opinion on the dwarves - especially kili and fili have changed over time. I do think they look more dwarvish with the hoods on and the costume design is really good. I too like fili more and i think has a more dwarvish face, i do wish Aiden was allowed to keep the beard he grew himself before shooting began but like you and i said before i have accepted it and look forward to seeing them.
What do you think about the dwarves we saw in the LOTR movies? To me they all look very much like dwarves and also alike but different enough for me not to consider them clones. Though in TH i think they would be too similar in design as obviously they are on screen for way longer.

I'm guessing from all the discussions about the images I'm the only one having problems viewing them? Each time the website loads, the images appears on the extreme right of the page, causing them to be obscured by adverts and other links. Does any one know if they're being shown else where?
So far the right side of the film looks good.
