Entertainment Weekly Talks 'Hobbit' - BIGTIME!

Steele writes: Just a heads up, if case you didn't know, that there is a huge 7(!) page cover story on the current status of The Hobbit in the Entertainment Weekly which hits newsstands tomorrow (10/05). I would call it cautiously optimistic - confirmation that New Line and PJ apparently are now talking - and a good overall summation of the PJ/New Line/Hobbit situation to date. BTW, love your web site.

can you ignore the horde at the door? There has been so much expectation - and to some degree, demand - from the public for a Hobbit film that New Line surely can't hold out forever, particularly when the deadline must be looming for the expiration of their rights to the story. It's pure speculation, but ... maybe there's some behind-the-scenes arm-twisting that means NL can extend the rights only if they've got PJ on board? However this all pans out, the background story to this saga is going to be a fascinating read someday!
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Saurons master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. The fact that PJ and New Line are talking gives me hope that I will see this film in my lifetime! Wouldn't it be a wonderful holiday gift to get an official announcement by the end of the year that PJ, Fran, and Phillipa were working on a script and that filming would start in 2008?

I think the constant pressure from all sides is showing some wear. It was said before that money and 'movie formulas' speak loudly in the movie business but i just cannot understand the lack of dimension in foresight and common sense. New Line seems to have all the imbecilic characteristics of a Frank Burns.
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez May the grace of Manw๋ let us soar with eagle's wings! In the air, among the clouds in the sky Here is where the birds of Manwe fly Looking at the land, and the water that flows The true beauty of earth shows With the stars of Varda lighting my way In all the realms this is where I stay In the realm of Manw๋ S๚limo By El~Cugu From the website: 'The Realm of Manwe'

1- well I can't wait for a Hobbit movie 2-I'd be excited at what they'd do with an "Appendix movie", essentially composed of various vignettes from the Appendices and other sources. I think the Middle-earth "Prequel Duology" will be a heck of a lot better than the Star Wars Prequels, as The Hobbbit was 1-actually written first and 2-is already a best-selling book

most of us (and those more casual fans who aren't part of the ongoing LOTR fandom) would go see it - once. But whether it could get us to go back multiple times is another question entirely. It's the repeat business that gives a movie "legs" and racks up those huge profits. It would be entirely possible for a movie of lesser pedigree to open big and then drop like a rock if the fans were disappointed. These latest tidings are interesting. I'm cautiously hopeful.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

Wel, he most certainly is not the only one now is he? This is good news and I agree that if EW would devote a 7 page spread, there is " more to this Hobbit than meets the eye." As far as this line... In fact, Jackson may turn out to be the only person who never once lost hope in the movie Hmmm...they haven't met Grammaboodawg yet have they?
Whether because Frodo was so worn by his long pains, wound of knife, and venomous sting, and sorrow, fear, and homeless wandering, or because some gift of final strength was given to him, Sam lifted Frodo with no more difficulty than if he were carrying a hobbit child pig-a-back.... Frodo opened his eyes and drew a breath....'Thank you, Sam,' he said in a cracked whisper. This was over-written and under-reported, mostly re-hashing old news. (Including stories at TORn! But thank goodness the article didn't get TORn and TORc mixed up again.) Funny enough, perception is reality and because EW did the story it adds to the weight of everybody getting along and making nice. Missing from the story is the pressure from Time Warner on New LIne to produce. NL has a string of badly performing movies and Shaye and others are probably feeling some pressure. Remember "Elf"? That was the last big hit at New Line while Shaye's pet projects, like his own directed "The Last Mimzy" were genuine box office bombs. Anyway, it is curious that EW did such a major story. I am a subscriber and I am sick to death of TV coverage at the magazine so this was a welcome relief.
No wonder all writers want to direct: one still has to put up with a load of nonsense, but even if wearing two hats (writer and director), there is one under which one is not called a thief and then raped - David Mamet

"When New Line began planning to sell the LOTR props and costumes at auction, Jackson intervened and said that he'd like to have them, both for sentimental reasons and for a museum he hoped to set up one day. The studio balked. Jackson then pointed out that he had never signed a contract for the extended Return of the King DVD. He informed New Line that he'd be happy to accept the costumes and props as his fee the suggestion being that he might not work on the DVD otherwise. Those extended cuts had become far richer revenue streams than anyone could have predicted. Jackson got his props. " ...was news to me. I'd never heard this bit of scuttlebutt before.

It's after midnight on a school night so I should be sleeping, but I clicked through the on-screen tv guide one more time and lookee here: They're talking LotR at this moment! They're on because of New Line celebrating its 40th anniversary. BS: Every film is a gamble. CR: Has it exceeded your expectations? ML: The total cost for the 3 films would be at least $300 million, but this was covered with our investors, licensing agreements, etc. Everything depended on the first film being a success. Earlier they were talking about how New Line had made the greatest number of franchise films. Except for the Nightmare on Elm Street films (their first franchise) they made sequels that were as good as or better than the original (Rush Hour 3 was cited as example. Gag.) CR: PJ and you (Bob) had a disagreement. Is it all about money or is it personal? BS: Initially it was all about money. We have nothing to gain from duplicity in accounting. We welcome audits. I don't think we've ever been sued by anybody because we've always settled. (Referring to statement about PJ never working for NL) I said things in a time of emotion. CR: Hobbit. You're looking for another director and thinking of Sam Raimi. ML: We're not saying that. He's a great director and so is PJ. There are lots of rumors. There are lots of people who could direct it. So, there's no news here at all, but still it was interesting. Bob Shaye really comes off as prickly and short-tempered while Michael Lynne seems more friendly and diplomatic.

*tears* thisis an awesome article!!! They've got everything in there! I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!!! THere's stuff I didn't know about in there... He informed New Line that he'd be happy to accept the costumes and props as his fee the suggestion being that he might not work on the DVD otherwise." I LOVE THIS MAN EVEN MORE!!!!! He saved the props for THe HOBBIT! Yeah for the amazing exhibit... but HE KNEW he'd be needing them! Peter Jackson has been patient, unswerving, masterful in handling this. Of course he meant it that IF IF NL would let Shaggy Shaye have his WAY... he'd be done with THEM as far as the filming goes... be he also knows that SHAYE is not the only body in the building. He knows Michael Lynne, Mark Ordesky (though his job's changed) and others are in that company that are SANE! I'm shaking..... omg..... and to reference TORn... LOOKIE! and XO... you're quoteed... This is an awesome areticle! I'm going to have to go re-establish my prescripti... I mean... renew my EW mag subscription.............. I had to race to the homepage and read this. It's not real until the homepage says so.. and there iit is... *tears flwing agan* Trust Peter. He knows what he's doing. You guys called it at DragonCon.. *twitch* "[Panel discussion] Ramie was discussed in July 2007 to work in association with Peter, but now Shaye's waffling on Raimi directing because he has "bigger fish to fry." Calisuri: No one really knows what the project is ... Calisuri continues [a prediction]: ... what we will end up seeing is Peter Jackson is actually the executive producer of The Hobbit with Sam Raimi directing... which might not be ideal in all cases, but with Peter overseeing, we can expect to have a very similar vision of what we've had. If there's going to be a happy medium in this process that, hopefully, is the happy medium. Obviously we want Peter to do the whole thing. Corvar: Just being able to have the whole artistic team be involved versus being off in New Zealand with no input will make a big difference. Being able to have the same people who designed sets and those types of things [including the screenplay by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens] work on it... that everybody would be under contract to Peter [who] might be out and excluded if Peter wasn't involved. MrCere: And it's my personal belief... I'm not speaking for anyone but me... I think you can bank on that happening..." ... I'm still holding out for Peter Jackson Directing! I want it all!!! He'll be back and this will be done right! It has to... it would be so wrong for Tolkien's story to not be done right! DREAM BIG! DREAM RIGHT!!! ... because In Dreams... When the cold of Winter comes Starless night will cover day In the veiling of the sun We will walk in bitter rain But in dreams I can hear your name. And in dreams We will meet again. When the seas and mountains fall And we come, to end of days In the dark I hear a call Calling me there I will go there And back again.

I made the following posting in their comment area after the article: The Hobbit needs the combined resources of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Weta and Ian McKellen to be all the movie it could be. I hope New Line and the Kiwi crew resolve their issues soon. I bought the boycottnewline.com domain and collected a few thousand signatures from people who, like me, were annoyed enough to boycott all New Line films. It is my greatest hope that I won't have to renew the domain and can take down the "Boycott New Line" petition down soon!

I didn't know there was a January trial date... http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?xfile=data/theworld/2007/October/theworld_October173.xml§ion=theworld&col= Quote: Hanging over the dispute like fog on the Shire is a planned film version of The Hobbit, which New Line and millions of movie fans would love to see Jackson direct. If the sanction shifts momentum in the case, it could help facilitate a settlement (relations between the parties are rumored to have warmed recently). However, the stakes are so high and both sides have already spent millions litigating the case, so the January trial date still seems likely. And lets not forget that this lawsuit concerns only the first Rings film. Any settlement probably would have to cover Jacksons identical claims on the other two blockbusters, meaning that the dispute, like that ending sequence in Return of the King, could keep going and going.

completely dropped and there is no further legals? ... or do you mean a settlement of some source? That may mean that they will be able to look at the books and go no further, but I dont think its that simple. Theres money involved so, I cant see that ... Why would the entire lawsuit be dropped? I could see there being a commitment made and there are things in the works ... I wish I could see the EW article ... Maybe the script has been put in the hands of the Jackson/Walsh/Boyce camp, but I still dont get this as smooth sailing.

My original post had a link to my blog which is a big no-no apparently even when it is bang-on topic. My blog goes further into the reasoning behind it. The gist of it is that Jackson will receive more than a usual share of the percentage gross than what is normally accepted in the industry for a director of his stature. Remains to be seen of course, but it sounds reasonable.

Considering how much money the studios stand to make from 'The Hobbit', i'm sure even a bump in pay to PJ will still leave them with quite a profit. It's really been fascinating to see how this has all been played out over the past few years. I don't claim to know much about the movie industry, but it's like reading a soap opera!

behind the scenes, there's more to this than the money issue as far as Peter goes. He had a point to make on behalf of everyone (including some of the players from his films) to make sure NL comes clean in their dealings. I'll bet stuff's going on and will be going on in the future that will keep this sort of thing from happening again... at least if Mr. Jackson's involved.

I believe that too gramma ... hand on your heart commitment stuff here ... principle and integrity ... and really, it seems to me what started out as a 'request' has been like a small pebble dropped in a large pond ... The money could be well spent in the southern hemisphere though and another point totally maybe unrelated ... the expended exchange rate for US dollars they are predicting to come very close to getting better ... which means that this could become 'very' expensive ... a near $ for $ ... which it wasnt before .... I find that interesting as well ... There maybe more factors to get this happening - but the money is playing out its own story ... and having impacts - or prescriptive impacts which could see this as a timing issue as well. The current financial situations are effecting alot of big business ...

aren't 'we' (as a community) part of that process and evolution of the Hobbit coming to being, and some of the drive behind whats being put out there? ... and the buyers of the mags ... I think it may bring a few more people back to TORN and other sites just to see whats happening - like a bit of a nudge ... to see Gollum on the cover brings it all back to those that have been lost from here maybe ... it also keeps the Hobbit up front .. and Shaye did mention he was looking into the publicity side of things ... promotion and such .... this is a good measuring stick .. the build-up is looking well exectuted at the moment ... I think this is just the first of many! Im wondering how many magazines will have something on the covers soon ... It would be interesting to see what the sales figures are like, and what interest it generates ... I believe its not only projection of the Hobbit movies success, but the cyber gaming market the Hobbit has to conquer and live up to as well ... theres all sorts of target markets to consider now ... the movie is the catalyst for such huge assocaited revenues ... Woops ... off on a tangent again ... But your thread title - I agree!!!

Nothing new? Hmmm. Last I checked no one else had the goods on the litigation being dropped which certainly opens the door toward working together amicably. I thought it was quite exciting to get that piece of information. Yes, it is not official yet. No, I will not reveal my source. Yes, it may not pan out this way. I am merely passing on information that has not been known before. Let's all hope it does. And you are correct that is a quote from my blog.

One of PJ's greatest strengths in business
[In reply to]

is that he's a natural deal-maker. He's focused on what he wants and, as far as I can see, he always gets there one way or another - whether it's telling New Line officials that he's sick so that he can sneakily finish filming Forgotten Silver or it's playing hardball with companies large and small that are standing in his way. I've seen some articles in the NZ press - a few years ago now - where PJ was painted as the baddie for an action he had taken. But he got the result he wanted, and he has engendered enormous loyalty among his employees and colleagues. If anyone can get a film studio to toe the line that he draws, it's PJ.

Semantics! Wow. I would have expected better. A little ego bruised are you? "No truth to the rumor" is spinning my post as if it were nothing but imagination. I take offense to your insinuation. First it was that I posted a link to my blog which was bang-on subject to the original post - oh, thats SPAM! Now it is that you don't believe my source. Frankly, I could care less what you think. I cover more than just LOTR (though I am just as big a fan as anyone). I am interested in all things 3D. Not the old stuff, but the new exciting digital 3D. My sources come at it from a different angle than yours obviously as I deal with James Cameron's AVATAR (Weta CGI), Spielberg/Jackson's Tintin (Weta CGI), etc. I have internal sources in New Zealand and that's as far as I will go on that subject. Your readers (and the knowledge contained in this forum) are the strength of theonering not the front page. Despite your asking, I will not submit my news items for you to place on your front page rather than post in the forums. Use your own "higher class" sources. We'll see whats what soon enough; who is smiling and who is not.

... that, for some reason, the Hobbit issue will only be arriving here next week, which is kinda stupid, if you ask me, if we're just about an hour away from the U.S. border. Our "new" copy of EW is the Oct.5 issue which just hit the magazine racks here today. This is so weird. We usually get them at the same time as Americans.

Newstand issues come later than subscription issues
[In reply to]

by my experience. I have a lot of experience with this with my Tolkein group. I have had a subscription of EW for many, many years. I often send out emails to my group regarding relevant articles of interest. By my experiene, they come out 4 days to a week after I get them delivered to my house. Subscription people get first crack. This issue is dated for the 12th, not the 5th. So, basically it does not have to it newstands until the 12th which is the end of next week. Just give it a few days then try again. My last experience, for example, was after the last Harry Potter book came out... there was a special collector's Issue. I had people frantically asking me to scan and print or xerox my copy because they couldn't find it. I explained the situation, they relaxed and it showed up in a few days. You will know the issue right away... The cover has a screen shot of Gollum in the rocks looking sinister, it fills the whole page. Issue title: "Return of the Hobbit?" issue date: October 12, 2007 (today is Oct 5) issue number: #958 Article Title: "Can there be peace in Middle-earth?" Article pages: 28-36 (total: 7, not countng ad pages) DoN

Yep, I've too had an EW subscription for yrs. I tend to get them the same day they're out on the stand. I will say this: It was a Friday afternoon and at the bookstore that carried the issue, they were already sown to 3 or 4 copies from a stack already, and I saw a couple people reading it. I did a pop o wheelie and said to my self, "If this is NOT in my mailbox whenj I get home..." LOL. I wanted it, my precious, NOW. All I can say is, I stand by my earlier "George Lucas/sandstorm" theory. Gramma will recall that this was a phenomenon that happened to George Lucas in Tunisia every one of the times he was on the eve of filming Tatooine scenes. Four times, on the the night before filming was due to start, a huge sandstorm would roar in and destroy the sets. The first time this happened in 1977 Lucas freaked, he thought the whole thing was doomed, to quote Threepio. But in 2005 it was the crew that freaked, but Lucas laughed, "OH, don't worry, this is good luck!" In other words, the sandstorm was a good divine sign aobut the film's prospects. I've alkways said that it seems there HAS to be epic industry turmoil surrounding the initial stages of a legendary Tolkien adaptation being made! It doesn't seem to be any other way this point, this is a GOOD omen....lol

I had my eye out for it thanks to Xoanon's warning. At 3:00 Friday afternoon, the first newstand I tried still had only last week's issue. Shortly thereafter at another subway stop I found my copy of the "Gollum" issue, and read it avidly while walking to my destination. I probably would not have known about it otherwise as I don't usually read EW. As noted here already, the article actually has very few hard facts. So why a big article on The Hobbit now? A lot of the article actually informs the reader about just what The Hobbit is, its plot and characters, and how it relates to The Lord of the Rings. I'm guessing it is aimed at folks who loved the LotR films, but who have never read and never will read a word of Tolkien's books. It is, in other words, laying the groundwork for marketing the new movie. This is the first mainstream media alert to EW's readership and other media audiences, that The Hobbit exists and can be expected in a few years. Entertainment Weekly is hardly a neutral reporter, and this article did not just pop up out of some fans' excitement about a property that has been in play since 2003. EW is owned by Time Warner, who also owns New Line. One can scarcely help concluding that Time Warner knows perfectly well that New Line is finalizing a settlement with Peter Jackson. The vast and synergistic marketing army of Time Warner is at last being mobilized. Even the extensive discussion of the "second movie" indicates that the deal will include that venture as well - otherwise I think the article would not have allocated any space to it.

... in the past one year we've been let down so many times that we're just being wary now? Seriously, in the past year, every small bit of good news has been followed by just plain bad news, so even I'm tending to be a bit "pessimistic" and it's beginning to annoy even me :) I'm trying to restrain my excitement until everything's concrete, but it's so hard when you're a geek.

I understand what you are saying ... but Im not of the same perspective, Ive seen it as basically positive and moving in the right direction with little disappointment in the way things have progressed. I wasnt meaning to come across pessimistically (sp?) ... I wont waver on this issue - Peter Jackson will do the Hobbit, in his own capacity!! (IMHO) but I dont trust New Line - Bottom Line - what is their definition of a healthy approach and outcome. What is their standard of compromise ... Win, loose, or draw, Peter or NL, the dynamics have changed. The legal side of this is growing and seems disproportional to the initial request of the audit, and over taking the expectation of the film. Maybe the Hobbit story was to lift it away from the legals .. and the trial in January, yet now both the NL/Jackson legals and the Hobbit Movie are heavily intwined at the moment, where as before they were relatively seperate issues - although connected at the hip. They were bound to collide at some stage - just curious of the type of damage that does ... I think results in January will bring a swift ending to all of this, but will it mean another 'ending' to the Hobbit? Im looking forward to some new beginnings ... but not in exchange for a less than fair result and outcome in the courts, and to everyone involved. How idealistic am I??!! Everything that happening will make a great Ringers II film anyway!! Hope thats happening!! LOL! Im just interested in the next move - this is like chess - its stategic ...

...that some places the Mag gets distributed in a timely manner. I guess that since the company is centered in NYC. that accounts for it. But it is not here in Honolulu yet. In past experience, the bookstores my group usually go to find them have no idea when the Mags are normally to get delivered to them. I have a subscription so, no worries for me. Imagine my astonishment when I opened my mailbox and Gollum was there. I depend on the mag since my first love is film and I like the seasonal previews to keep up with what's coming out; as well as Oscar news. one of their critics, Lissa Scharzbaum annoys me to no end (Owen is better). I never read news other than movie news unless it's Harry Potter or Lost. I apreciate your analysis of what the article means. I was too busy yesterday and too tired last night to read it.

Probably only NYC & LA get the mags on the newstand early. (They are lucky that way with Indy flms art films, and UK/foreign films as well...December Boys never did make it here). If you don't see it this weekend, try mid-week...by Friday next week it will be definitely there...try some book store like Borders or Barnes & Noble, etc. If you don't find it tright awy, it doesn't mean it's sold out, it means their deliveries are slower in you local. Also, sometimes special issues they want to call attention to might be found in as "special" stand separated from the others... in the middle of an isle or by the register. I've had to help a friend or two on scavenger hunts for issues in the past that I had mailed to me. I'm an old hand at this of sorts. Have fun, bring a friend, have some coffee, or 'what-evahs'! and learned a little bit about how magazines gets to stores. All the publishers ship their magazines in bulk to a central warehouse, where they're sorted into the individual orders from each store. I worked up and down a long table with stacks of each magazine, then picked the titles that were ordered (30 copies of Mademoiselle, 25 of Glamour, 40 People, etc.), bound up the order then had it taken on a rolling cart to the loading dock. The individual orders were then shipped out to the stores. So each city has a different schedule for stocking the stores, depending on how often the area warehouse delivers the magazine orders. I also worked on the other side, at a convenience store, and we got magazines on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So another store in the area could have a magazine before we did if their delivery dates were different.
Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver. `Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder. `I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves. NARF since 1974. Balin Bows

Ha ha, we are just so crazy. Here we are arguing over the logistics of magazine delivery.... Well I may as well chime in....I live in Albany, NY, (just 2 1/2 hrs north of NYC) and around 6 PM yesterday checked pharmacies (the local CVS), some grocery stores, the Barnes and Noble, and two Borders stores. Only Barnes and Noble had it. I used to work in that particular store too; I can tell you that ET was put usually put out Fri afternoon, certainly by 5 PM. Yet they were already down to 4 issues or so from a stack. We must have a lot of TORNsibs still active here:) Patty, ROFL....now I can't get that song out of my head I can't help but think that, paradoxically, every win for the Jackson camp is a plus for the film's chances. 1) It strengthens PJ's hand and puts a crimp in the NL's finances at a time when not only does every penny count, but the head honchos at Time Warner are eying this case with laser vision. THEY don't want this spinning out much longer....after all, they're the ones talking about buying up the company when Shaye's and Lynne's contracts run out. 2)As PJ wins these high-profile cases it makes him stronger and with more room to negotiate, while generating more bad press for NL and thus for them. It's in their interest to wrap this up asap, before thin35.)gs begin to snowball. The Entertainment Weekly article (a major cover story, just on this verdict alone!) will further persuade them to put the thumbscrews on Shaye. Interestingly, the article itself points out that ET is owned by TW (on pg 35.) I wonder if someone from TW secretly commissioned the story, as a shadowy way of pressuring Shaye. 3)NL is under pressure to produce, and produce fast. What this may mean for PJ's directing chances, no one can know. But hopefully a deal to extend the rights is in the works. At this point, I've been fantasizing about a January announcement: PJ, Fran and the NL crew lined up for a photo op, cameras flashing, in which PJ begins by announcing, "I have some good news, and I have some bad news...." the good news being the Hobbitis being made, and I'm directing it, but principal photography will not begin until 2011 (I have to do TInTIn first)..." In which case we will all be biting our nails for the next 3 yrs wondering about the health of Ian and others...but hey, Iet's just GET to that point first!!!!!! 4)As Jackson gains more room to maneuver with such results, slowly being backed into a corner. The onus is thus on them. If the opposite were true, any "outside parties" might well be turning the screws on PJ and his team, which would be easy to do. He would be the one drawn to the negotiating table, and with the judgement of the world's media on his head. Weakening PJ with cuort losses would give NL more freedom to do what they want, such as choosing directors.

If you're an avid film follower, here's a GREAT website: AwardsDaily (Formerly known as Oscarwatch), ...www.oscarwatch.com I've followed the Oscars every yr since Titanic, and this site has been around 10 yrs or so. Great clips, links to reviews, and the Discussion section is the best part. Oh...and PPS: my favorite quote about the Hobbit so far: from an interview he gave for FilmScore Monthly.com a few months ago, Howard Shore was asked if he had been "fantasizing" about a score for "The Hobbit", and Shore replied with a smile and one word: "YES" THAT, folks, has given me the chills more than ANYTHING. O Eru, please preserve the good health of a) Ian, b) Chrisopher Lee (at least until PJ can get some footage of him doing the White Council --and that he and PJ can mend their hard feelings; and c) the wonderful Howard Shore....

Magazines that are sent by 2nd class mail on the mainland get here erratically. The New Yorker, which I subscribe to, is always at least a week late, and sometimes several weeks elapse and then 2 or 3 magazines arrive. Newsweek, on the other hand, is apparently printed and mailed here, since it always arrives right on time.

Speaking of The New Yorker, Elizabeth, you mention that your issues tend to arrive a week late.If such is the case, you probably haven't yet seen the cover of this week's issue---the one with the latest Iran story by Seymour Hersch. If you haven't, prepare yourself. I saw this cover in a bookstore and my eyeballs just about imploded. The fact that it's the NEW YORKER, for Pete's sake, makes this image all the more damning. NOT their usual fare. I mean, with that artwork style.... To non-Yanks on here, I don't know if you can get a picture of the cover on their website or not, (Probably yes, ) that pretty much sums up U.S. politics right now. And it's no doubt a good thing that the Iranians won't understand the "footsie" thing, if they did, God knows what the reaction would be. Before the Craig scandal, of course, most Americans wouldn't have understood it either. I merely mentioned this to Elizabeth b/c she subscribed to the New Yorker; if anyone manages to set their eyes on the cover and doesn't understand the full meaning of it, I'd be happy to briefly shed some light, though it IS OT for this thread.

And I take it you understand the full insinuations of the piece. Pretty savage stuff. You have to see it up close too. Doing such pieces on heads of stte (however crazy, etc, they may be) is not usually their style. It threw me for a loop, I have to admit. BTW, my sister just got back from a trip to Hawaii last month. Lucky you! What island do you live on? After reading James Michener's novel when I was a kid, I REALLY wanted to go....esp to see places like Lahaina. I imagine the cost of living must be very high, for haoles, at least.

and it tends to come to a week before the newstand date. this issue under discussion is dated the 12th, I got it the fifth. When i email our group on special issues of interest: LotR, HP, Lost, actors projects from LotR, Etc. I always give the relevant data to identify th ecorrect issue: Date, issue #, Issue title, Artile title an dpage numbers... and wha tthe image is on the cover. Ther eis a delayed delivery between teh time I get it and the time it shows up at newstands. Lucky for Squire he lives or works in NYC and this issue was deliverd to stand yesterday. Then that is NYC. We live in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Everythign takes a longer time to get here. It always amazes me that my EW come early. I do agree about the spottiness of delivery... sometimes I miss getting an issue when it's supposed to come, but not often. Especially now I pay my supbscription with my creditcard and applied for autmatic re-subscription. I rarely get interruptions anymore.

Honolulu is on Oahu. Lahaina is on Maui. cost of living must is high, but not all that much from the Bay area, which is wher I moved her from. In fact the Bay area is highe in some ways, like in property costs.
