are in Tuxedo (New York - not in tuxedos!) after a day at RenFaire, on my satellite laptop, just aching to see what happened! What a happening! We're glad that Altaira is thrilled to tears. All you guys did a fantabulous job in surprising her and BG. We all think the Map is beyond description, it is just a fantastic input by artist and TORnsibs!
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings! In the air, among the clouds in the sky Here is where the birds of Manwe fly Looking at the land, and the water that flows The true beauty of earth shows With the stars of Varda lighting my way In all the realms this is where I stay In the realm of Manwë Súlimo By El~Cugu From the website: 'The Realm of Manwe'

looks like that map is going to blend in with the color scheme and decor perfectly. I hope you get to spend many moments gazing at it and that it brings a special element of peacefulness to your days. I am so glad it remained a surprise, now you will have to go back through some of the posts and read all the corny map jokes! Best wishes, Karen

No time to read this whole thread. Just the essentials for now... I have tears streaming down my face. Altaira... It has been really fun... giggly fun planning and plotting, though I mostly just read the plotters on our own private group board... I feel very much a part of it. I kept up with it all since June, anyway. Can't wait to see the surprise party images and more picts of the map itself. I have to get ready for my own Bilbo Bash... going as Éowyn. running late. I'll come back and read this thread more thoroughly afterward, during the wee hours for all of you... it's 3:30 pm Hawaii time. Have wonderous joy and laughter tears and hugs. ...who have had a closer (albeit digital) look is: the mouth won't close for a long time. You cannot begin to imagine the depth and delight of this map until you look at it over a prolonged period of time. I have grown to really admire Daniel's work. You know, I made a comment about Howard Shore on my website. Let me go find it. Howard Shore is most certainly gifted, experienced and well trained in music and film scoring. Having little formal musical training, I am not a good one to discuss those attributes. And actually, I don't believe those fine attributes are what elevates this music beyond 'good', or even 'great', to something indescribable. I honestly think there's something in Howard Shore's spirit which, provided with the fodder of Tolkien's Middle-earth, shone through all the brighter. I wrote this to a friend: I'm beginning to think that Howard Shore has woven something magical into the score. And part of me would like to believe that for all his talent, for all his gifts, for all his conscious intentions, in the end there's a bit of Tolkien magic that possessed him and elevated the work past that of an ordinary score.
I'm also beginning to think that Daniel has woven something magical into this map. I have enjoyed the intrigue and the planning and the brainstorming and the updates. But, honestly, none of that explains what I feel when I look at this map. There's something in the map itself, aside from all the wonderful camaraderie of the project. If Daniel were here, I'd raise a glass and call for a toast. Altaira, you give so selflessly to these boards and this community. And always with grace and patience. You deserve all of this. To Altaira (except... my bottle is almost empty.) well... to Altaira with my last splash of Moose Drool Ale.

who is feeling somewhat disturbed by all this talk of shaky hands, with photos showing various drinks being held in close proximity to the map?!?!? I keep wanting to reach into the screen and move the drinks away. I'm sure everyone was careful, but man, you guys are braver than I am. I'd have moved all liquids and anything "dangerous" out of the house beforehand! Er . . . well, I guess that would have been difficult without spoiling the surprise. And I guess that's just me being a worry-wort as usual. OK, carry on . . .

A conspiracy unmasked (Note that there are four pages.) I hope this works. If not, maybe someone here can help me with it. Anyway, the first thing is a short movie clip of Entmaiden explaining to Altaira and BG how we were following the package as it was shipped. The first photo is an enhanced version of the 'Altaira's face' photo, which Elizabeth sent me after fixing the color and lighting. We took lots more video, but it's all on VHS, and we have to transfer it to DVD. Once that's done, I may ask for help from someone more savvy than I am about how to share it. I think I can send the file via e-mail using "yousendit", if someone has ideas about how to share it from there. There's something I've been wanting to say through all of this. I was only a very small bit player. Beyond a few very minor suggestions about the map, my part mostly consisted of casually suggesting to Altaira that we get together after my writers' group as we often do. That and learning my lines for when Entmaiden and Annael knocked on the door. There were others who did a huge amount of work on this wonderful project, and are continuing to do so. I won't name names for fear of leaving someone out, but I think most of us know who they are *cough*Entmaiden*cough*. And the person who first had the idea for this journey has asked to be anonymous, and I will honor that request, but we owe her a debt of gratitude for a wonderful, generous idea.

THAT'S IT Magpie! The map is staggering! It's evolved from a fantastic idea with many voices shooting SO many ideas and comments that he sorted through and incorporated as much as he could... but this piece that he's captured has such a warmth and home-like to it. Someone said it before, and it struck such a chord. When I look at it, I feel homesick... It's all the beautifully special things that has been born from all of the people who have populated the boards... but it's grown into a life of its own. How he could have gathered all of TORn board's history and the magic of the films and meld them into the amazing piece is phenomenal! You're so right to compare Shore's weaving magic into the films with his music to Reeve's artwork! We're so lucky!
