A Conspiracy Unmasked Can't Post

RosieLass says "She hates it!"

OK, not really; in fact, not at all. Altaira can't stand up because her knees are shaking and for the first time in memory, she did indeed "SQUEEE!". She says she'll never trust anyone of us again.

She's so afraid she'll drip tears on her Map, but she can't stop looking at it and finding something even more amazing. We haven't gotten much more out of her than "Wow", and "Squee".

She's still collecting her thoughts and will post soon. Right now all she says is she loves TORN and everyone on the message boards. She is really overcome.

We have video of the event will post it when we can.

We've been her for an hour and she hasn't left her map. BG is equally overwhelmed.

Annael adds:
None of the conspirators who are in/came to Colorado for this got much sleep last night! We were all too excited! Entmaiden & I had butterflies driving to Altaira's. Aunt Dora, Uncle Baggins, Rosielass, and May Gamgee parked in front, while we parked around the corner and peeked until we saw everyone had gone in. Then we brought the map to the door and knocked hard on it; Aunt Dora shouted "no thank you! We don't want any visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations!" and we yelled "What about very old friends?" Altaira opened the door and stared at us for about five minutes in disbelief. Then we gave her the card we'd gotten, thanking her for all her hard work on the new boards (and BG's). She thought that was the thank-you and was completely unprepared for the map itself. Uncle Baggins recorded her reaction, which I can't do justice to in words, but it was everything one could wish for. We all feel privileged and that to be part of the gift-giving was in itself a gift. None of us have ever been part of such an extraordinary thing before. This was truly a work of love in every way.

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

to explain to those who weren't in on the conspiracy [In reply to] Can't Post

Last February, some of us began talking about how to thank Altaira and BG for the new boards. There were many ideas floated, but eventually we settled on a map of TORN with all the elements of TORN included, based on the map of Middle-earth. We contacted Daniel Reeve, who did the maps for the movies, and he agreed to do it. Many months of discussion ensued with people making suggestions for what should be included and where. There were several drafts before the final product, which is absolutely beautiful with many wonderful little features that you have to look at the map for a long time to see. We'll be putting pictures up soon.

If you are interested in a copy, stay tuned; we're working on that and will let you know!

Here's a picture of the map. You may not be able to see all the details, but it is amazing how much stuff there is. It's absolutely stunning.

Careering throughout the boundaries of space,
Whenever I see thee, I think in my mind,

BG and I are truly, truly speechless. I was already crying just reading the card. Little did I know what was yet to come. Smile

I really am speechless right now; HAPPY, but speechless, (and very shaky). I need to gather my breath and my thoughts and post a proper thank you to all you excellent friends and Hobbits.

Until then THAG YOU VERY BUCH seems like a pretty good start.

Isn't it BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

Squeee! Hey, why is this in Off Topic? [In reply to] Can't Post

There's never been anything more On Topic in the history of the boards, the topic being the boards themselves and thanks therefor and all. None of which would have existed if not for the good Professor's brilliant works. Can someone move this to Main? (Not Altaira if you're still shaking! :-)

I've been dying of suspense all day waiting for the big moment! Thank you so much to those who made the trip to give the map in person. The "what about very old friends?" bit was brilliant! I wish I could've been there to hear that exchange and see Altaira's reaction!

We all think the Map is beyond description, it is just a fantastic input by artist and TORnsibs!

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez

What those of us know... [In reply to] Can't Post

...who have had a closer (albeit digital) look is: the mouth won't close for a long time. You cannot begin to imagine the depth and delight of this map until you look at it over a prolonged period of time. I have grown to really admire Daniel's work.

You know, I made a comment about Howard Shore on my website. Let me go find it.

Quote

Howard Shore is most certainly gifted, experienced and well trained in music and film scoring. Having little formal musical training, I am not a good one to discuss those attributes. And actually, I don't believe those fine attributes are what elevates this music beyond 'good', or even 'great', to something indescribable. I honestly think there's something in Howard Shore's spirit which, provided with the fodder of Tolkien's Middle-earth, shone through all the brighter. I wrote this to a friend:

I'm beginning to think that Howard Shore has woven something magical into the score. And part of me would like to believe that for all his talent, for all his gifts, for all his conscious intentions, in the end there's a bit of Tolkien magic that possessed him and elevated the work past that of an ordinary score.

I'm also beginning to think that Daniel has woven something magical into this map. I have enjoyed the intrigue and the planning and the brainstorming and the updates. But, honestly, none of that explains what I feel when I look at this map. There's something in the map itself, aside from all the wonderful camaraderie of the project. If Daniel were here, I'd raise a glass and call for a toast.

Altaira, you give so selflessly to these boards and this community. And always with grace and patience. You deserve all of this.

To Altaira (except... my bottle is almost empty.) well... to Altaira with my last splash of Moose Drool Ale.

I did notice . . . and am I the only one [In reply to] Can't Post

who is feeling somewhat disturbed by all this talk of shaky hands, with photos showing various drinks being held in close proximity to the map?!?!? I keep wanting to reach into the screen and move the drinks away.

I'm sure everyone was careful, but man, you guys are braver than I am. I'd have moved all liquids and anything "dangerous" out of the house beforehand! Er . . . well, I guess that would have been difficult without spoiling the surprise. And I guess that's just me being a worry-wort as usual. OK, carry on . . .

Here's the photo album. <3 [In reply to] Can't Post

A conspiracy unmasked (Note that there are four pages.)

I hope this works. If not, maybe someone here can help me with it. Anyway, the first thing is a short movie clip of Entmaiden explaining to Altaira and BG how we were following the package as it was shipped. The first photo is an enhanced version of the 'Altaira's face' photo, which Elizabeth sent me after fixing the color and lighting.

We took lots more video, but it's all on VHS, and we have to transfer it to DVD. Once that's done, I may ask for help from someone more savvy than I am about how to share it. I think I can send the file via e-mail using "yousendit", if someone has ideas about how to share it from there.

There's something I've been wanting to say through all of this. I was only a very small bit player. Beyond a few very minor suggestions about the map, my part mostly consisted of casually suggesting to Altaira that we get together after my writers' group as we often do. That and learning my lines for when Entmaiden and Annael knocked on the door.

There were others who did a huge amount of work on this wonderful project, and are continuing to do so. I won't name names for fear of leaving someone out, but I think most of us know who they are *cough*Entmaiden*cough*. And the person who first had the idea for this journey has asked to be anonymous, and I will honor that request, but we owe her a debt of gratitude for a wonderful, generous idea.

"There's something in the map itself..." [In reply to] Can't Post

THAT'S IT Magpie! The map is staggering! It's evolved from a fantastic idea with many voices shooting SO many ideas and comments that he sorted through and incorporated as much as he could... but this piece that he's captured has such a warmth and home-like to it. Someone said it before, and it struck such a chord. When I look at it, I feel homesick...

It's all the beautifully special things that has been born from all of the people who have populated the boards... but it's grown into a life of its own. How he could have gathered all of TORn board's history and the magic of the films and meld them into the amazing piece is phenomenal!

You're so right to compare Shore's weaving magic into the films with his music to Reeve's artwork! We're so lucky!

Here was my first reaction [In reply to] Can't Post

when I saw the photos RosieLass took a few days ago. I sent this to Entmaiden for her to pass on to Daniel:

When I was trying to explain this project to my dad I mentioned that the old boards were getting creaky, and that the Altairas and Inferno had created new boards. He said "Creaky? I thought this was the Internet. You make them sound like real things." Of course they're real things! And this map is a perfect picture of the beauty of the new boards. I'm so thrilled to see a map of a very real place that I've loved since the First Age. The details are great! For some reason I especially like UUT there on the plains of Udun. And the ship sailing to the West brings tears to my eyes. Thank you, Daniel, for realizing the vision so wonderfully! I try to explain the TORn boards to people, and they can't see what I see. With any luck, someday I'll have a print to hang up in my office so people can see for themselves what a special place this is. Altaira and BG are going to be, as squire once said, gobsmacked. I'm soooo looking forward to seeing the looks on their faces this Saturday!

"Of course they're real things!" [In reply to] Can't Post

As I am reading through all these posts and looking at these photos, tearfully, I want to share the links with my fellow Tolkien friends I just left an hour ago at our own annual Bilbo & Frodo Birthday Party. Many of them are real fans of Daniel's work, too. Many love TORn's front page and check-in almost everyday. But none (accept Elizabeth) have been on the message boards. They would love the map but wouldn't get the references.

I fear that folks who don't participate in this kind of community, don't really get what it can be llike and the friends you can make on line. I love having a conversation with someone thousands of milles away. Stretch it over time and wonderful things happen. It certainly is real... I look at it like: if I had never been a pert of TORn, I might have the same perspective. I just don't think that anyone outside this community can grasp how "real" it is. Alas!

"Creaky" is a great word for the old boards. Smile

Here's the dialog that preceded this moment. [In reply to] Can't Post

I was too wound up last night to remember all this, but I woke up this morning with it playing through my mind. Here's how it unfolded.

Altaira and BG opened the package and looked at it, bemused. Altaira said later she thought at first "Oh, a nice map of Middle Earth." Then it dawned on her exactly what she was seeing.

She turned it around and said "How did you guys do this?"

Entmaiden replied "We didn't. Daniel Reeve did."

And that's when she made this face.

So many mind-blowing images! [In reply to] Can't Post

I can feel the excitement! It's palpable even in these frozen moments!! But I have to say this is one of my favourites that represents these special women...

Altaira in the beginning of the insanity as she tries to sort out what's going on, and Entmaiden's face as she subconsciously shows how overwhelmed she is with her hand literally holding in her emotions. Her selfless efforts and incredible talent to keep us all focused and moving forward was astounding to me!

Without the inspiration and contribution in the beginning way back in February, this would never have happened. I feel so blessed to be a part of this and share it with so many amazing people. This map represents so much for me... but ultimately, it's the souls who brought it together through their participation on the boards and now in borning this exquisite representation of who and what TORn is that thrills me! Thank you all!!

exactly right! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have to say, when I saw the map, I felt like something much larger had happened than we had expected. It truly is a magical thing.

I think it is the hand of Eru. Just as it was when Tolkien found his little story about what happened to Bilbo after he came home getting away from him, and allowed it to go where it wanted to go (although still hanging on to Tom). Just as it was when PJ et cie found themselves revising the script "closer to the book" over and over again. Just as it was with all of the cast and crew.

Personally I believe God is Love, and that's what it all boils down to. Sounds like most of you managed to feel the love that was in Altaira's living room yesterday no matter how far away you were physically. I'm glad you got to share that. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. And we all felt that it wasn't us. It wasn't even Altaira. It was Love - our love for Tolkien and our love for TORn made manifest.

(We told Altaira there were a lot of people standing and facing West at 1 pm Mountain Time) ...

Outside a dog, a book is your best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.

Congratulations Altaira!!!! What a wonderful group of friends you have! I still remember the lovely lunch we had with Aunt Dora many years ago.

But I know how hard these guys all worked and I held Auntie's hand (by email at least) while she agonized over the "conspiracy" including the sleepless nights of secret-keeping, LOL.

But I can see it was all well worth it and such fun to see you surprised and delighted. It is well deserved, m'dear, so enjoy. Besides, a little conspiracy is such fun and we all should endulge ourselves in one from time to time. I know they all enjoyed themselves immensely--and I only wish I could have been there!! I could not agree more to what you said. [In reply to] Can't Post

Your 'concepts' on love (actually real 'knowing' goes beyond this cerebral cover) built in to our 'world of being's' foundation being Tolkien, i feel is the greatest truth. Having said that, i will say i love you Altaira. I love all yous guys. I love you Anneal. It is amazing what love manifests. You did good:). You all did good:).

When we were questioning whether a list of names should be put around the border, where a thought arose where it could construed as 'back-patting', if i may use this wording, i said these names represent faces, spirits that love her and surround her and she should know that. As in the way Sam's family (my recent fanfic) surrounded him.
We are all family.

"Forbidden Planet" is on at [In reply to] Can't Post

...noon here in Hawaii. That means 6pm on the east coast, 3pm on the west coast.

TCM is Turner Classic Movies and is hte BEST movie network...

Besides being a great great place to find movies and lots of fun... it is also almost like going to film school. You may know all this, but just in case...

Each month they have special focuses (called film festivals): Star of the Month, Director of the Month, and some theme. the do birthday tributres on a stqr or direcotr's birthday and memorium tributes when someone dies (usually within a few days). They have many documentaries (which I can't get enough of and copy/save), many great interviews (also copy/save), and the "Essentials" on weekends (the films that should not be missed).

The special focuses are fantastic for really getting to know the filmography of an actor or director. When you see films all together like that, you get a real good idea of the talent. Actors I once thought I didn't care for I now love or at least apprecate their work. I know direcotrs a lot better now. What Ireally love is the historical stuff about film itself: about the inventions (when, who, how, effects, meaning in film history), what studios did what kinds of films, what they were famous for, who worked at what studio, what films were made whn, he importance 1939 in film history, ...so much more.

I've written papers on the subjects of film history. It was my thing long before I became a Tolkien fan... since I was a kid sneaking up late to watch the old movies on tv with the volume down really low so my step-father would catch me.

But I'm a very geeky historical film fan and TCM is 'home' for me. Heart TCM, I think was made just for me!!! Smile Evil Angelic

To the Conspirators and Contributors [In reply to] Can't Post

You all are the reason this project was successful. Not only did you bring this about with your monetary contributions; your ideas, enthusiasm, discretion, patience, inspiration, and dedication are the reason we had such a wonderful day on Saturday. Add in the skills, generosity and professionalism of Daniel Reeve, and success was assured.

So pat yourselves on the back for a job very, very well done. Those of us who could be present were just the enablers - YOU enabled us to be there.

We're working out details for print and poster orders, so stay tuned! I know we already said that, but it's true!

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.

Hints: [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm the one in the silly hat. Uncle Baggins has a bushy beard. Our daughter is the young-un. (She was a TORnsib briefly once and her nick was May Gamgee). Entmaiden and Annael are the ones knocking at the door: Entmaiden is the one speaking in the video clip. BG is the one kissing Altaira (I should hope so!) And Altaira is the one squeeing and flapping her hand ;-)

There may be a couple of other folks in some of the shots. A couple of Altaira's Tolkien society friends showed up. And an old friend of Annael's came over to see her while she was in town.

I did figure you out from the hat. I then worked out who walked in with you openly and who knocked on the door. Wasn't RosieLass in there? I thought she was part of the expected party.

That left two who were knocking, who had to be Entmaiden and Annael. Someone mentioned Entmaiden holding her hand to her chest so that gave her away and identified Annael as the other.

I figured out BG pretty easily and then looked for an someone taking pictures that might be married to a woman who wears a hat like that! :-D

The young one: I kind of figured she might belong to you.

It was all a bit like one of the logic puzzles.

And when Sam heard that he laughed aloud for sheer delight, and he stood up and cried "O great glory and splendour! And all my wishes have come true!" and then he wept. And all the host laughed and wept, and in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold. . .until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."

I try to tell people who don't get online what an amazing place TORn is, and there's no way they can possibly understand.

Today at church I was praying hard for a young woman in our church who is dying, and also for others who are hurting, and in the midst of it all I sent out a deep prayer of gratitude for all of you.

I know, I know, it has been so long--but RL has been so in the way.

I hope I can return more often, though, and for more wonderful events like this. What a great communtiy and such great people. It's lovely to see it still strong and healthy--even after all the movie hype has dissapated and moved on into the mist.

Amazing, wonderful posts! [In reply to] Can't Post

BG and I had some very special guests to take care of into last night Wink, and a host of RL obligations today planned well before we knew what a special day this would be, so we're just now working through all these wonderful posts, the posts from Fiesta, the drabbles, etc. (all you conspirators are SO sneaky and subtle - well done! Smile). One thing we HAVE made time for is sitting in front of that wonderful, amazing map and just simply... staring at it.

Reading the posts and staring at the map has brought us even more tears as well as tons of laughter. I keep trying to come up with the right words to express what we're feeling, but we're literally still in a state of shock (in a good way Heart), and no words seem good enough. While I doubt any mere words will ever be good enough, give us a little more time to try to come up with some that are. It's not from a lack of desire - it's more from an overwhelming sense of humility and awe at what you've all done, not to mention our wonderful friend Daniel. In other words, it's very much still sinking in.

However, don't despair. As many of you have come to know - I rarely remain speechless for long! Laugh

With much love and emotional exhaustion.

I certainly feel . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

your awe and gratitude with your words . . . words that sent even more tears rolling down my cheek. (My right eye is a vertible waterfall, as is its way.)

Those pictures of your reaction are priceless. Particularly when you got the pont that it was created by Daniel Reeve. Just Fantastically Marvelous! I am so grateful to have been able to partake in the conspiracy and especially in the joy of watching you receive it via a wonderful series of photos. What joy and wonder!

And thank-you for all your work .

. . . and thank you for allowing a camera to roll continuously through the whole thing. You must have been wondering why so many pictures were being taken. What in the world must have been going on through you head in the beginning phases of the Conspiracy Unmasking itself, I can't even imagine.

Joy and gratitude in abundance is flowing through my heart this weekend.

So many tears of love and joy [In reply to] Can't Post

have been shed this weekend we maybe should have gotten an environmental impact study first. But, then, they're spread from New Zealand to England, and many points in between, so the environment is probably safe.

Rest assured that we had as much fun designing and arranging this as you're now having enjoying it. And the memories will be with us forever, as well (not to mention prints).

We needed to find some way to express what TORn means to us. We seem to have succeeded.

Take your time. :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

I think we've all just been savoring the success of our little plot. AngelicSly I was a little afraid some of us *coughgrammacough* might explode with suppressed excitement on Friday!

As is so often the case on TORN, this simple idea of a thank-you gift became more than I think any of us imagined, even while we were looking at drafts and making suggestions. The finished Map left many of us rather giddy and a little speechless, so we'd be disappointed if you weren't. Take your time to recover and enjoy! Heart

Here's some of the early planning stuff [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been going through the files on my computer and I've got some of the early suggestions we sent to Daniel, and the drafts he sent back to us. I'm trying to compile as much as I can into a coherent history that we can share.

The file called mapdossier.doc is, I think, the first list of suggestions we sent to Daniel. I've attached it to this message.

Out of this soup, as Tolkien would say, Daniel crafted his first draft. We exclaimed and Squee'd over the draft, made some suggestions, then did the same with the second draft. I've got most of those documents. If anyone wants them, I'll be happy to e-mail them. Some of you have been kind enough to send me the Digest from the old Yahoo group, which will be a huge help.

If you want the early drafts and documents, my e-mail is ent_maiden at hotmail.

Not only have I been squeeing [In reply to] Can't Post

over the presentation of the map and all, I've been squeeing over our trip to NZ and Australia in March. Supposedly our tour (first half of the Red Carpet tour) includes breakfast with Daniel -- and I will be sure to tell him how greatly appreciated his work is! (Yes, I know, I keep mentioning this. Am I excited or what?)

It feels so good to get together with friends and do something nice for someone special, I can't understand why so many people in this world would rather be vindictive, bitter, and hateful.

Thanks for all your hard work, Altaira and BG.

Entmaiden, you are a wonder! [In reply to] Can't Post

As I said elsewhere in this thread, your nick was well-chosen. Your care for growing things, like the seeds of the map, shows in this compilation.

Just for grins, here's the old Colorado map. I turned it backwards and colored everything below 5400 feet blue, and was amazed how much it looked like Middle Earth:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And here's what it looked like when I rotated and stretched it a bit to make it look even more like Middle Earth:

When I first did this, I had fun thinking about correspondences: the town I work in is about where Rivendell would be, for example.

Because I will NEVER again come upon a group of people as caring, thoughtful, intelligent, funny, and passionate as the people here.

Trip to Denver = $$$$
Message Board Map = $$$$$
The look on Altaira's face = Priceless.

With RosieLass' permission I've added [In reply to] Can't Post

her photos to my album. I didn't add the photos she took of the side panels, since Uncle Baggins took shots of all those too. But the fox is there, and Tol Admin, etc.

We're working on getting the video to a form where we can share it. We got it from tape to DVD tonight. Now I need my daughter's help to make clips I can put in the album, or someplace. I'm not sure how soon we can do that: I'm in the throes of grading stacks of tests, and Wednesday we plan to have a micro-moot with Morwen, who is vacationing in the area. And Thursday night Terry Pratchett is at the Tattered Cover. Time does fly. But sometime we'll get it out. We had so much fun hearing Altaira sqeeing again.

One part of the Map... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I'd like to see closer-up is the lower-right side: Gondor & Mordor, etc. I can't find the Reading Room on those other close-up shots. Do you by chance have that portion of the map in a form easy to post/ And the chance to post it? I don't want you to go to a lot of trouble, and no rush.

You and the rest of our reps have done such a stupendous job. {{{geat big hugs!}}} and Mahalo Nui Loa from the bottom of my heart!

I looked on RosieLass' page and I think I got all of her photos that weren't duplicates of the ones Uncle Baggins took. Neither one of them seemed to get a closup of Mordor. Guess we'll just have to wait until the prints come out.

Yep, the link will work even if the album is protected, you just need the password to access the whole album.

I saw that one... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and I already downloaded it. I am sorry, I really intended to be more specific. I meant on the map itself.

I saw that on the Draft #2 image, the Reading Room is placed in Gondor...but that whole section of Gondor and Mordor of the actual map part it was not posted in the PhotoBicket folder. So, All I can see is a small fuzy version of the draft. I downloaded that, too...opened it n PhotoShop and magnified it. But it too low-res, naturally, to see any of the detail of that portion of the map at all clearly...it is all too fuzzy; making all the words illegible. I would love to read what all those different places are in Mordor...and even more, I would love to see what the finished versaion of that portion of the map actually looks like in a close-up.

Well, it's out of our hands now, [In reply to] Can't Post

so unless you can convince Altaira to post a photo that's all we've got. The Reading Room was at Minas Tirith, in the library there. You might check out the rough draft in my album: you can enlarge it a bit. But some of the things were moved after that draft.

I was afraid of that [In reply to] Can't Post

It never hurts to check, though.

I did download the draft and opened Photoshop where I have great control 0ver zoom factor. However, the resolution is so low (by necessity to suit the needs of the internet) that making it larger makes the text fuzzy. But that is how I found out RR was in Minas Tirith. But, everything else is much smaller and therefore too fuzzy to read. And, the draft hardly does justice to the final art piece in quality and appearance and that wonderful feel of that fine work.

Alas, I will just have to wait.

Mahalo Nui Loa so much for everything. Though you claim your part was small, and though it may be in the large scheme of things, your part is not small to me. Nor is anyone else's part. What a wonderful collaborative effort this has been.
