It's time for FIESTA HOMECOMING 2011 !!!

|
Welcome to our 6th Annual Fiesta Homecoming!! Every year we welcome back our TORn alumni, party with our awesome regulars (both of many and few winters) and entice our lurkers to come on out to play! Feel free to tell some stories of TORn's bygone days, or how it's been to share the experience of watching The Hobbit being filmed, or what the anticipation of finally seeing part 1 in a year and a month is doing to you! If you're thirsty... what'll ya have :) *kicks jukebox* I'm Going Home – live from Woodstock 1969 by 10 Years After [better crank up the vol to do this right!] Altaira's Homecoming Fiesta Retrospective: Homecoming Fiesta threads started in the last year of the first age of the message boards (a few months before the new boards came to be in February 2007). Board members took a vote and decided early- to mid-November [Friday nearest to Veteran's Day] would be a good time to have it because there aren’t any major holidays or Tolkien milestones around this time of year. Sadly, we don’t get as many oldies as we used to because some of the oldies who used to alert other oldies have also sailed to the west. However, they all continue to be welcome here whether it be at Homecoming Fiesta time or any other time throughout the year. 2006 (1st Homecoming Fiesta): thread gets so big it crashes the boards. A 2nd thread is necessary to free things up. In Home Page news, there were rumors MGM was in talks with Peter Jackson to make two Hobbit movies. The Two Towers complete recordings were released. 2007 (2nd annual Homecoming): First Homecoming Fiesta on the new boards. The Home Page had also been updated after a major crash lasting several days. In Home Page news, the feud between New Line and PJ was delaying Hobbit talks. ROTK Complete recordings were released. 2008 (3rd annual Homecoming): By this Homecoming, we ‘knew’ PJ would produce The Hobbit and Guillermo Del Toro would direct, the Hobbit Movie board was new and the boards were approaching 3,000 new members. 2009 (4th annual Homecoming): FOTR at Radio City; Bilbo casting rumors abounded on the internet; Ian McKellen announced he has read the script for The Hobbit, and we were all looking forward to filming starting in the spring of 2010. 2010 (5th annual Homecoming): Del Toro is out and Jackson is *back* in. A number of major roles have been cast. The boards, especially the Hobbit board, are hopping, getting up to over 800 posts per day overall at times. The boards surpass 5500 registered users. 2011 (6th annual Homecoming): Filming is in full swing both in the studios and on locations all over NZ. The boards went crazy when images of the Dwarves and Bilbo were revealed. Jackson has just released his 4th video blog as he shares the progress of characters, sets and technology. At a random check last night, the boards have over 900 viewers in a 15-minute period and have exceeded 7,080 registered users! See everyone AND MANY MORE at Homecoming 2012!!!
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world. TORn's Observations Lists Unused Scenes

I'm working really hard, trying to get everything organized before the Gaffer and I take off for the Cruise to Middle-earth, but I'll try to pop back in every now and then today and see what beloved faces are here. Welcome, one and all! A quick pumpkin frappuccino please, gramma, to get the old gray cells lighting up and doing what needs to be done. *Stuffs tip jar with pencil stubs and used pixels*

That first Homecoming was a party to remember! Can you imagine, if we'd been given these production videos back during the making of LotR? There would have been be rumours flying even faster! But I'm pleased at the ones we've been getting, I do enjoy the little snippets of speculation contained in them. And December 2012 will be here before we know it! Might I have a mug of not-too-hot coffee, please, gramma? Had a broken tooth pulled a short while ago, and now the novocain is wearing off... I'm also baking my special "braids" (braided cardamom bread) for a church fair tomorrow, there's a batch doing their first rising now, and the house will smell delightful later. Got any leaves left on your trees?

Wow, 6th Homecoming. Time flies when you are having fun! OhioHobbit and I will have hot chocolate to toast the occasion -- rum in his! It was fun reading Altaira's Retrospective. I am looking forward to seeing The Hobbit, but not as obsessively as I was with LOTR. I look over the Hobbit board regularly, but I am not sure I have ever posted on Hobbit Board. We can't see the video updates, so we kind of get left behind on the latest news. It was such fun to look at the spy pictures posted on TORn for LOTR. Here's hoping lots of people show up for Homecoming! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.

Well, being the nervous sort, I'm hoping everything comes off as planned. But the plans are to spend three days in Sydney, then get on the ship with a group of like-minded souls, and visit Tasmania before heading off to New Zealand, where we get to visit Edoras, and WETA in Wellington, and Hobbiton, as well as appreciate all the gorgeous scenery. And we're hoping to catch up with Kimi and her delightful spouse in Auckland before coming home. Whew! I hope your tooth gets to feeling better soon, and I think I can smell your delicious bread from here!

Yes, I shall bring photos and good stories, promise!
* * * * * * * Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight? A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

Hi everybody! So listen to this: I thought I was just being paranoid, but I might actually have prevented an electrical fire! Mr HappyHobbit's been traveling for his job, and all sorts of weird things have been going wrong in the house, like we seem to have a critter in our walls, and it's all made me rather jumpy. Anyway, I was making dinner the other night and preheating the oven. When I walked by the oven a few minutes later, I saw something that frightened me--there was a bright red spot on the coil inside, and it looked like...a tiny flame coming out of it. I reacted so quickly to turn off the oven that I'm not exactly sure what it was that I saw, whether it was actually a flame or something different. Regardless, whatever it was went away when I turned off the oven. I called Mr HappyHobbit, but when I tried to explain what I saw, I was having a hard time describing it, and it started to feel as if I'd panicked for no reason. So I convinced myself it was fine, but I didn't turn back on the oven. (Made dinner in the toaster oven instead). Well, when Mr. HappyHobbit came home the next day, we opened the door of the oven, and what did we see? The heating coil inside had weird white blotches on it that it didn't have before, and it had a huge crack in it! Good thing I hadn't tried to use it again, and good thing I walked by the oven when I did--maybe we could have had an electrical fire! Now we have the exciting adventure of seeing if we can replace the coil in the oven ourselves. We aren't remotely handy, so this should be interesting. If we can't figure it out, we can always hire somebody. At this point, it doesn't seem like we need a new oven or anything. Anyway, thank goodness I was paying attention! Stay vigilant, fellow TORNsibs! And have a great weekend!

Here in Northern Colorado, we still have some snow in the shady spots, and some piles of broken tree branches here and there await their trips to the recycling center. The weather is unaccountable mild and glorious this week. In short, perfect homecoming weather! All we need to complete the experience are the football game, the marching band, and the school dance! Well, in the US, that is. What do folks in other parts of the world do to celebrate reunions and homecomings? I'm drinking tea... again... while on the treadmill... as usual... The excitement for me 'n mine this week is that we now have a patio in the backyard. It's been a long time coming, and we finally hired a company to do it. Next up for us, we're redoing the family room - also a long time coming - but we're doing it ourselves. We're working to a deadline, since we're using the dining room for storage, and it needs to be back in shape in time for Thanksgiving in a couple weeks!

Well, I think an old friend of mine and longtime (second age) TORnsib is going to come back to post sometime today. :) I can't wait to see everybody! I love this little history, btw. Hmmm, as for my own memories of LOTR and TORn, I would just say that I have loved getting to know everybody on here and discussing my favorite trilogy, as well as hanging around in the off-topic forums the last few years. Some favorite TORn memories: 1. Magpie's movie quizzes 2. A certain bathing suit picture I can't currently track down, but I will most certainly not forget 3. Darkstone's responses 4. No idea where the journal is now, but it was a fun project while it lasted, and I most certainly don't regret it (plus, we still have a website!) :) 5. Coming together to participate in projects when we could, to help out other sibs 6. Pun threads/pants threads 7. Mathoms 8. Celebrating/remembering various days 9. Looking around Feedback to find the "juicy" posts 10. This post 11. (eleven memories because it's 11/11) Being a member here for almost four years...that feels like a long time to me, because it's about a fifth of my whole life! :) Happy friday, TORn!

Soft cider, that is? And I just bought some pumpkin butter on the North Shore (from the Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais) so maybe a plain scone to slather some on. I might sneak out a plate of those pickled snow peas my son bought, as well. Stories of TORn's bygone days? gee, I've been here long enough you'd think I'd have some. I was just thinking this morning of the little hints that Altaira was dropping just before the new boards debuted. I can remember being really excited about working out what she was on about. I wish we could access those hints. I can't remember what they were now. And I can remember the true party we had when the new boards opened up. I think that's my most fond memories but there have been lots good discussions and fun times along with that one.
there aren’t any major holidays or Tolkien milestones around this time of year. There is a minor Tolkien one. It seems that the UK publication of TTT was on November 11, 1954. I used to wish that I had been part of the online fan crowd leading up to the LOTR movies' releases (I joined the web for leisure the summer of 2002 because of my renewed acquaintance and love of LOTR). But I'm mostly ambivalent about joining in The Hobbit discussions and news. I'm used to probe all gifts under the Christmas tree till I figured out what each one was. Then I realized it wasn't as much fun to *know* before the *experience* of Christmas than I might have thought. I think it's kind of the same with a movie like this. I not only don't want to know a lot of the minutiae of Hobbit news (although I don't mind larger scale news), I don't really want to discuss it at length. So I'm slightly following news but not closely and it is easy for RL to crowd out what the news of the day is in my brain's attention. as for me, I just got back from 5 days on the North Shore (Lutsen, near Grand Marais... for those who know the area). The accommodations weren't what we were hoping for, my books weren't as engrossing as I would have liked, and lots of establishments were closed for the season. But our cabin was right on the lake and the waves were high the whole time meaning we lived with the sound of surf in our ears. And my son saved the day with a board game he brought that I really enjoyed playing (Small World) and episodes of Steven Fry's Quite Interesting on his laptop. When it came time to leave, it felt like my heart would break it was so full of emotion from the time we'd had together. In terms of satisfying the obsessive beast in me, I have spent a lot of time on a soundtrack project and have renewed my interest in genealogy research. It seems the site https://familysearch.org/ has a lot more info than the last time I was researching. I've been able to go 3 or 4 generations further back on the line I'm working on. It is like a puzzle to me but with more human interest to be gleaned amongst the dry bits of info from census, birth, and death records than Angry Birds or Bejeweled provides. :-) I had my first genuinely happy moment in quite a while when I dug deep enough to find the name of one ancestor's father. Woo hoo... one more generation achieved. :-) In honor of Veteran's Day, I'll post a page of the photo book I did about my Dad who served in WWII. Now I'll hit "post reply" and catch up on the news from the rest of you. and gramma... I LOVE that song by 10 Years After. They don't sing like that anymore, do they?

Over on the Hobbit Board, there's a new post with links to all the production videos! The photos, I think, are scattered throughout. But if she goes through the videos in order she'll have more than enough to satisfy her! So how are you all these days? Are you all getting ready for Thanksgiving?

haha... they were on my mind as I thought about TORn memories. Two were merged. I grew to love Darkstone's responses to my movie quizzes. He is so much fun to play with, if you get what I mean. So many slightly obscure references that I was always delighted when I got. And not only was that bathing suit fun, I found a picture - some time down the road when the subject came up again - of a man doll in a pink suit that I posted. I want the picture of that doll, too, but I have no idea how to search for it. (And I really liked the page I did for the journal! It was a great idea.) I think your link got messed up (at least it didn't work for me) but I got out the post number and worked some magic. My oldest is in her 2nd year of college and doing GREAT! She is in communications with a *film* emphasis. She's the assistant director on this semester's movie, and she's the producer for next semester's movie. She's done lots of stuff as a freshman and sophomore that usually is only available to upperclassmen because she is always involved in everything going on, even if she isn't in the class or lab. My middle-child is prepping for college. BTW, she is smarter than me. She got a 1310 on her SAT (I had 1300). BTW, I said that, not her. *chest swells* Little AE is going on 6 (2 1/2 more months) and he's been reading up a storm for the last year. Mostly self-taught because we haven't been pushing him. Also got a new puppy. Our oldest dog keeled over (literally) about 2 months ago. The new one is half german shepard and half blue heeler. Her name is Hispaniola. Little AE named her. I was reading Treasure Island to him at the time.

there are actually two soundtrack projects, both which are going to remain slightly mysterious at the moment. One: the site itself is getting a makeover by a budding artist/web developer (smiles sweetly and mysteriously). It has been a tremendous exercise for me to give up some control over something I've had total control over up till now. I'm sure it's good for me. :-) Two: I'm working on revamping and compiling bits and pieces of info and resources I've collected over the years. Mostly, it's got to remain a project for private consumption out of respect for copyright. A highly edited version may make its way to public consumption. And the larger project may make it's way to certain friends who I know already have all the soundtrack products. :-) oh.. and... I just found a little sumpin sumpin for you at the thrift store yesterday. It's something I once owned and thought about giving to you only to realize I'd already given it away. So I was happy to find it. For 69 cents no less! (and another thrift store find in the last few months: all four BK light up goblets in their boxes - three with the lights never installed and the fourth with the light installed but still working)

That should start me off nicely on this homecoming Fiesta! We took Scout to get castrated yesterday. Not because he really needed it, we have no issues at all with his behavior, he's such a soft boy, but now that we have Mira, his blood-sister, I didn't want any accidental puppies. Anyway, there were a few complications in surgery which has resulted in him being in a lot of pain today. He is very sorry for himself right now, he's on some quite strong painkillers but he's really upset! He's back at the vet for a check up tomorrow so fingers crossed! We have had a bit of a geeky day today. The new Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim came out on the Xbox360. We picked it up first thing, and have been playing it all day! We took the day off work especially! It's lots of fun. Thats our main plan for the weekend too. Seeing as Scout is laid up for a few days we have the opportunity to have a real lazy weekend, I can't remember the last time I spent the afternoon in my pyjamas! Happy weekend all! xx

Which is exciting because now I'm a size 12 and can try on clothes in store at most of my old favorite stores. Size 14 and over tends to be either online only or not in stock at all in a lot of brands. Sadly, every time I hit another weight milestone my depression kicks up another notch. It's been kind of kicking my butt this week and that puts me 5800 words behind for National Novel Writing Month. So much to sort out in my head! How about some diet hot cocoa today? I think we joined about the same time. I would have liked to have been around during production, too. The funny thing is, I have that opportunity now with "The Hobbit", but I'm not taking advantage of it. Not enough time, or interest, really. I want to see the movies, but...I don't know. Too many other things on my mind, I guess.

Though I just came back from my lunch walk in snow and a bit of stinging hail, so I could use a hot chocolate chaser. Quite a combination! I tend to lurk once or twice a week. My responsibilities at work have just grown and grown, and I don't get online at home. But I sneak in when I can, and I have to check out the book thread and catch up on TIME.

it's amazing how losing weight brings out the demons, isn't it? You wouldn't think so, but there are reasons (way beyond "lack of will power" or "emotional eating") that put the weight on in the first place, and losing weight means facing them. Every time I go below a "0" on the scale they pop up. I found Marion Woodman's "Addiction to Perfection" very helpful for some of this.

Our repro/office assistant is out on vacation this week, and I've been covering for her, so I've had lots to do. But I think it's under control. For now... I'm not sure what I'm going to do this weekend. For once I'm not coming off dogsitting all week and feeling like I have a bunch of catch-up to do! Following the Hobbit news is somewhat different for me than it was following the LOTR movie developments. While I do like The Hobbit very much, it's not as close to my heart as LOTR is, so I don't feel as strongly about the suspected changes as I did 10+ years ago. I also haven't had a celebrity crush in a while, so...thank you Richard Armitage! (I can't find the swoon smiley that I like..with pink floating hearts...)

but otherwise it's been fairly warm (for Nov) and snow free. They predicted this. A warm fall. They also predicted a winter nearly as 'bad' (it's all perspective, I suppose) as last year's. We bought our 1st snowblower in anticipation and cut the branches off the pine tree by the back parking pad so we'll have a place to put the snow. for the moment, it's sunny and a predicted high over the weekend of 50 so we'll be outside winterizing the house and yard.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I really don't like thinking about what might have happened had I not walked by at exactly that moment. I couldn't smell anything or hear anything wrong, so how would I have known? As my Mom likes to say, it may have felt like an accident that I walked by just then, but it really wasn't. As it is, the dear little house is still standing, and we'll have a fun weekend trying to fix the oven!

I came in just before TTT came out. When I first heard that a LOTR movie had been made, I flashed back to Bakshi's version and rolled my eyes. "Oh great, just what we need... another crappy fantasy movie made for way-past-puberty fanboys!" So I skipped watching FOTR in the theatres until the DVD came out and it was on sale, so I figured, not having anything else to watch at the time, I'd give it a go. Little did I know that I would fall in love with not only the movie, but the books as well (which comes in handy when one is recovering from gall bladder surgery... it takes the mind off the pain and the incompetence of the health-"care" workers who live to torture you ). And here we are, nine years later, and it's become a mini-obsession with me. And I'm loving every minute of it! I still can't drink anything "iffy", but I'll risk an ice cream float if you have one. Cheers!

Have been greatly exaggerated! It's been an extraordinarily busy few months in the GAndyalf household, here's the Cliff Notes version: In late July a status conference was held that established the ground rules for how parental responsibilities would be done and worked out how much support my son was owed. Court mandates for therapy were also established. In mid-August my son started school but a mere 4 days into the school year we were contacted that he had a slot at the Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning ( http://www.facebook.com/AcademyACLconnect ), which teaches ONLY gifted and talented curricula. As might be expected, those vastly increased expectations along with dealing with the after-effects of a divorce and my son is struggling a little (some B's and even a C in one class - though he's actually in a full grade-level higher for that subject), but his teacher is marvellous and the school is all we'd hoped it might be so this is a very positive development. In late August and September my son played flag football and had both a good time and a very good year. The team finished 6 - 1 and there was some controversy in their only loss. My son was quite the playmaker on both sides of the ball and had no fewer than five touchdown runs called back because of his expert use of a stiffarm, which is quite legal in regular tackle football but this flag league called it a penalty (despite a few opposing runners doing the same where it was not called - hence the controversy in the loss). September was quite the time for tightening of the belt and it got even tighter in October as most of the pay for my returning to graduate school was backward-paying instead of concurrent - meaning I had to wait until late October and early November to receive monies I was counting on to pay our living expenses. When grad school finally started in October, the school did not get my my books until 2 full weeks into the term - which is only 5 1/2 weeks to begin with! - so that put me very much behind, which does not help when one is trying to get used to school after a three and a half year hiatus. Then within a week of my getting the book the university made another glitch and disenrolled me from the class despite that neither the professor nor myself had asked for me to be. It took another three days to get re-enrolled so now I was 2 1/2 weeks behind on a 5 1/2 week class. Not good. I ended up getting all the work done and passing the course but I hope that's the most difficult time I end up having towards the master's degree (Masters of Business Administration with a focus on Environment and Social Sustainability in case you've forgotten! ). I still plan on trying for a doctorate after the masters and that got a huge boost on Oct 17th when the Veteran's Administration sent me a letter. I can only presume the law has changed because I'd lost my appeal on this just 2 months prior, but the letter upped my GI Bill benefit for attending school from 50% to 100%, meaning much more of my tuition would be paid by the government and perhaps even more importantly, my monthly stipend for housing went up from about $370 or so to $650/month which is an enormous help! Halloween was fraught with a few misadventures of the parental responsibility flavour but my son and I made mostly impromptu costumes and bought theatre makeup rather than use masks and did a pretty bangup job of creating some cool creatures to go out and play at the 3 parties we went to. I'm highly disappointed w/trick-or-treating here as this apartment complex has a large number of children but I only got perhaps 1/2 a dozen trick-or-treaters all night and this when I'd bought two VERY large bags of candy! My son similarly didn't get many folks even willing to answer their doors so most of his candy came from the leftovers I had. A bit of a bummer as I like Halloween. I couldn't find a sitter for my son (overnights are always trickier) so I missed going down to Albuquerque (about 500 miles from where I live) for my friend's party - she throws THE BEST Halloween party ANYwhere! November brought some good news as the restraining order was dropped in return for dropping a contempt of court so the military, which did not allow me to perform duty the entirety of 2010 has allowed me to go back to work for 2011, which will complete my requirements to be eligible to retire and I've put in my paperwork to retire January 25th 2012 after 24 years' service (20 which will have 'counted'), and 32 years overall as I'd had a couple breaks in service. It feels very surreal. The military has been a major part of my life for a VERY long time! The worst part is since I am a Reservist I will not receive any retirement money for 10 years (age 60), whereas every other government employee gets to receive their pensions at 55 (active duty military gets it immediately upon retirement, or as early as age 36!) Oh well. One of the really cool things is as a retiree I can sign up on a waiting list at any military base that flies if they're going somewhere I want to go - ANYwhere in the world and if the space is available I can fly there - so can my son! I'm thinking since I'm going to be a student that isn't working the next couple years that when my son is off from school that we're gonna fly some places because my school is all online classes which I can do from anywhere. Only thing missing in my life is a consort to share such awesome stuff with! All things in time, but how long is patience gonna take to learn?! Must toddle as the home-made chicken soup is now done! Can I cook or CAN'T I? Be well and Happy Fiesta Anniversary! GAndyalf

Mr HH and I usually get too hungry to bother decorating much. He started baking it a few years ago, after I got ecstatic over finding a loaf for sale at our Farmers Market. (He hadn't tasted cardamom bread before). It was delicious and we thought, we could make this ourselves! So Mr. HH took it on as a personal project, and it's become one of his signatures. His family requested that we bring it to Thanksgiving again this year, and my sister's asked for his recipe. Anyway, that may be the first thing we make in the oven once it's fixed!

you stick with the lifestyle modification ("diet" simply doesn't cut it for the project you've undertaken) and the writing, as will I. I daresay others here at TORn are on the same/similar roads as well. Just as Bilbo and Frodo had to slog through large swaths of their journeys, so do we. And then, unexpectedly, something clicks into place and the things we've struggled to hold to become simply the things we do, and joy finds us.

For about 5 years, we could not get through the Thanksgiving, Christmas, NY holiday season without someone having ear infections, strep throat, chicken pox, or the flu. I'm going to be approaching five years with TORn in 2012. Thinking of that suddenly makes me feel like I've been here for much longer as opposed to four years not seeming long; it's amazing what one year can mean. I know I haven't been around for as long as some, or as active as others, but every visit to this place is fun to just escape into a world of fellow fans whether it's to talk geek or just share a good story. There's not much more I can really say (I actually have to get going to pick up some drywall) but I hope that the boards can last long after the Hobbit films have hit DVD and Blu-Ray, and that this very simple place can continue to play host to such fellowship among fans for ages to come. Happy Homecoming!

Hey all. Happy Vet's day, happy Friday Homecoming Fiesta, Happy Nigel Tufnel day (http://www.facebook.com/...elTufnelDay11.11.11/ :P). This is just the day of days. So, my grandmother passed away at the old age of 90 on October 19th. It sucked, for a couple weeks, after that. We buried her on the 27th... it's been a bit easier since, and while it still makes me a little sad, I'm back on track with school, and paperwork, and all. Speaking of paperwork! My school didn't end up helping me much with my financial needs to study abroad, so I turned to Sallie Mae. I'm going to complete filling out that with tonight. I'm also finishing up the portfolio I need to send to Massey since it's an art school. After that, it's more paperwork: housing information, apply for scholarships, financial stuff, and in December book group flight, apply for student immigration visa... oh my goodness. It's coming up so fast. The anticipated departure date is February 11. So. That means exactly three months from now. I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it! Wellington, here I come! *bounces*

...to keep going and keep at it, even though it seems to get harder the more you accomplish. I'm with Arandiel here; this is a major lifestyle change, and you are doing such a good job. I read an article in the NY Times recently about how psychologically difficult weight loss can be, that our brains seem to be programmed to make it as tough as possible. We all applaud you for everything you've done so far, and for keeping on, despite the depression.

to get that coil changed - that was scary, you could have had a fire! I think my braid might be a sweeter one than the one Mr. HH makes. Do you have his recipe handy? Here's mine: Ingredients: 3/4 c. butter, divided 1/2 c. milk, plus extra for frosting 1/2 c. water 5-6 c. flour, divided 2 pkg. yeast, at room temperature 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cardamom 1/2 c. honey 2 tsp. vanilla, divided 2 eggs at room temperature 1-2 c. confectioner's sugar Directions: In a small pan, heat 1/2 c. butter, 1/2 c. milk, and the water until the butter is melted and the temperature reaches 110º to 120º F. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix 2 c. flour, the yeast, salt, and cardamom. Beat in the heated liquids, honey, 1 tsp. vanilla, and the eggs. Stir in enough of the remaining flour until the dough can be handled for kneading. Knead 200 times on floured board, kneading in more flour as needed. Place in a medium-sized greased bowl; cover and let the dough rise in a warm place until double in size, 1 to 2 hours. Punch down the dough. Grease 2 or 3 baking sheets. Divide the dough into halves (for 2 large loaves) or thirds (for 3 smaller loaves). Divide each of these portions into thirds. Roll each of these thirds into a rope, about 14”-18” long. On each sheet, make braids using the 3 ropes. Tuck the ends under. Cover braids; let rise in warm place until double, 1/2 to 1 hour. Bake at 350º for 18 min. To prevent over-browning, cover with foil for first 12 minutes. Remove to cooling rack. When cool, frost and decorate as desired. For the frosting, melt 1/4 cup butter in a small pan. Keeping heat on low, mix in enough confectioner’s sugar until it becomes a lump. Blend in 1 tsp. vanilla, then add the milk, 1 T. at a time, until the frosting is a good consistency to spoon over the braids. Be careful, a little milk goes a long way! Decorate with candied cherries, nuts, sprinkles, etc.

...has TORN ever had a baking group, or a cooking group or something? I love it every time somebody shares a recipe on here. I will have to check with him to know which one, but I'm pretty sure it's one of these two. He likes finding new recipes on online sites; I usually use cookbooks and hit up family and friends. Between the two of us, we find some good stuff! http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/cardamom-bread/detail.aspx http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,194,151183-232194,00.html Whichever recipe it is, it is a bit sweet, but I wouldn't say sweetness is it's biggest characteristic. I don't really think of it as a desert, but more of a special snack. It sounds like yours is more desert-y! Yum!

Glad you're able to horse around with us here! To qvote a very old cartoon (I grew up with it), "<smacks lips full of cake and frosting> Cake GOOD! But girl, BETTER!" ---Igor from one of the old monster cartoons. Igor had wanted Dr Frankenstein to make a girl for him since he'd made one for his creature. When Dr Frankenstein was too preoccupied to pay attention, Igor took Dr Frankenstein's book, "My Favourite Recipes" and following the directions had made a very good cake. Aye, "stuff" is aligning fairly nicely at the moment. One argument over exactly what grade I EARNED over the school fiasco, but other than that 'stuff' is pretty good at the moment. Hope it aligns for you VERY soon too! You DESSERT - err - DESERVE it!

Phew - nearly missed Homecoming! (Thanks for reminding staffers, gramma!) I'm sitting in the house of L.Ron Halfelven, about to begin a movie marathon of Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2, but first we're drinking to TORn, to all our friends here, and to the fact that we would not be friends without these wonderful message boards! I joined TORn soon after FotR came out, that June L.Ron was the first TORnsib I met in RL, and since then I have had many wonderful journeys and RL encounters with fabulous people who have become dear friends. So it's only a flying visit but with much love for TORn and all TORnsibs. Or TOrnadoes, if you insist. Definitely this calls for bubbly - not that I need an excuse! Cheers all!

the only reason why I'm succeeding this time with the lifestyle modification is that this time, I am doing it with friends. Their ability to listen and talk me back on track when I derail (or want to) is the key ingredient. Also, I find others' success to be really inspirational, so as someone who is almost back into a size 12 (I have to hoist up the 14s every few minutes) I say hooray to you and also thank you for showing me it can be done!

That WOULD go nicely w/the soup! Yup, the plan is to get a doctorate so that I can go overseas to work. In 4 1/2 years (when the boy's 13 - I can't BELIEVE he's gonna be NINE in January!) we're going to Europe for a year, then Australia, Asia, S. America, and finally Africa for a year each. When it comes to Antarctica at 18 just a few weeks - no culture and not all THAT much to see! But "The Plan" is beginning to go the way I envisioned so this is a GOOD thing!

I've also had the experience of depression going along with weight loss. After years and years, I figured out that for me depression is linked to low estrogen levels. And since fat cells produce estrogen, losing weight meant losing estrogen. After my hysterectomy, I was determined not to do hormone supplements. But that turned out to be a really bad idea. Now that I'm taking a *very* small supplement, I feel great. My doctor told me last week I need to lose weight for the sake of blood sugar and blood pressure, so I'm motivated now. I've lost six pounds since then. I know the rate will slow, but I do know how to do this when I'm motivated, and I am now. I can feel the difference when I bend over to tie my shoes; my stomach doesn't get in the way as much :-) Hugs to you, and keep writing. You don't have to "win" at NaNo for it to be worth doing. I "won" last year, and decided I was never putting myself through that again. So this year I'm editing last year's novel, and if I ever do NaNo again, I'll set my own personal goal that will fit in better with my long work days.

since virtual food only has virtual calories :-) My doctor told me last week I need to lose weight and exercise more, as my blood sugar is up, and my blood pressure has been too. I'm not really that overweight; I'm at 25 on the BMI index, but these health problems are worth tackling. I've been having trouble with my feet lately, and he fingered pre-diabetes as a possible cause. I know how to lose weight; it's just getting motivated that's the key. So I'm motivated now. I've lost six pounds since the doctor visit, and I'm over at the gym every day with my aching feet working out on the elliptical and reading my kindle. I cheated a bit yesterday and donated a pint of blood, which is a pound, but of course that doesn't stay off ;-) Anyway, I have some lovely memories of TORn. I arrived in the fall of 2001, hideously depressed about 9/11 and my mother's declining health. It took her another nine years to die, but it began then. LotR and TORn and Figwit kept me going through those dark times, and I'm so grateful to this place. Other people have mentioned the pink bathing suit episode, so I don't have to repeat that, but it was of course a highlight. I didn't handle the Map adventure very well, but that's worth mentioning too: link Here's what the Map looked like: link

It's been a while since I've been around here, but I heard from a special mellon that today was Homecoming, so I thought I would come say hi! It's good to see everyone, both the faces from the past and the new ones, and to see that all the excitement still continues! *raises glass of miruvor to what is still the best site on the web!* Happy Homecoming to all my dear friends!

It really does feel like coming home when I pop in here. I'd forgotten about homecoming so I picked a good day to poke my nose in, even if I'm a day late! *Helps self to a Diet Coke and stares longingly at the rum* I could cozy up to a fire and reminesce about the good ol' times on TORn til everyone's bored to tears, but I'll spare you that. :-) How could I possibly pick just one to share here? I think my favorite times on the boards used to be the limerick wars and pants threads. But of course there was all the fun we had *off* the boards too! It's a dreary rainy day here and feels more like a northern-hemisphere November day than a southern-hemisphere one (which is actually okay by me: it's SUPPOSED to be dreary in November!). The princelings and NZ Strider are hard at work on train projects, and little NZ Wriggler (I think she needs a new name) is sound asleep, the way we like her! Here's a recent picture of her: Happy homecoming weekend, everyone! It's great to have this as an annual event. I'm off to bake cookies (does anyone else have uncontrollable urges to bake cookies on dreary rainy days?).

That's what my Niece school counsellor/therapist calls "scary smart" :) Another one that will do some very wonderful things! And a book-lover :) Little AE is hitting the ground running, too! My internet got knocked out for a few days due to necessary rewiring during a kitchen remodel, so I'm a bit late. But that makes the homecoming aspect even better, after all. It's nice to be back online again, and especially nice to be back on TORN.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

Thank you for linking to that, that has got to be one of the best moments on TORn! And you handled the Map adventure as well as circumstances allowed. There were a lot of stresses all around, but this was a group effort, and we all pulled together and got one another through it, with the most extraordinary wonderful result!

It has been a hecticly eclectic day and besides that there was all this different stuff to do. I am glad to see a goodly number of sibs getting together today. It is a happy thing. We have seen a goodly amount of the neatest events come to pass over the years, but we are still right in the middle of it all for there is so much yet to pass. If i may say so, the folk we have that habitate this house are quite special. Not only are they ones to ride the fair winds of Middle-earth, their feet are still firmly on the ground. It has been a ride for me. I have grown in many ways. And you are the reason for it. Love you all. Hoisting a Becks to toast a wonderful fellowship of good spirits here. May the road go ever on.

but in her case, they're not. Eldarion is great with her, and sometimes insists on sitting with her while I shower, even when she's soundly asleep, just to ensure that she's okay. If she's awake while I shower, he sits with her and reads her books to entertain her. He's also great about shoving her pacifier back in her mouth when she hollers while we're in the car! NZ Walker is pretty good with her, but has a shorter attention span. And speaking of pants, I find myself trying (and failing) to avoid saying the word "pants" to the natives here: "pants" means "underwear", and they use "trousers" instead. I just never can remember that in time in conversation, and find myself saying things like "That's a nice pair of pants you've got on!" or "I got my pants dirty earlier, but I'm wearing them now anyways". To their credit, they usually don't snigger...

The boys are absolutely obsessed with all things related to Thomas the Tank engine (and, actually, with anything to do with trains in general); we've got extensive collections of tracks in three different styles (wooden, blue plastic, and grey plastic). Any arrangement of tracks that they put together is an "island", as in an "Island of Sodor". I am constantly stumbling over engines, train cars, and tracks scattered about the house. Uncle Baggins must have a fantastic time at the Boys and Girls Club playing trains; what a great thing to be involved with. My boys would love to play with him!

After 10 years together we've decided to get all offical... It's quite cool though, we'll be getting married on our anniversary.. so we'll actually be together 11 years to the day (on the big day)... Congrats to you for your 38 years :)

The reason we chose to get married on the same day as our anniveresy is because I count all the time we are together, it's not like the day of the wedding is Day one of the relationship....

So this coming March, we will celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary, but the more important number will be the 6 years we've been together overall. Best of luck for your upcoming wedding!

It'll be good to see you around more.
The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

although I DO live on the southern California coast, so if the big one hits, the San Andreas splits, and a piece of this Golden State breaks off in accordance with all the dire doomsday predictions, then I may just sail off into the west on my own little island. . . which means no internet and no TORn. Until then, I'm staying.

Surprisingly, I have a couple of free minutes to write - the wife is at the dentist, Elboron went out, two of the girls are getting washed and the baby is playing next to me (although she is very dangerous, that one - she found a stool and was trying just now to climb to the tub and join Mirabella there. She wasn't happy when I saved her.) While we're talking of her - some time ago I have asked for a sador-name for the young 'un, as all her siblings had already. And just this week I was struck by a wierd idea. It goes like this: she is going to daycare where Mirabella used to, two years ago. The nanny is a charming lady, who immigrated some ten years ago from Peru, and she tends to invent Spanish-sounding nicknames for the kids (Mirabella's first name was very slightly tweaked, so as to rhyme with "chiquita bonita"). So one day I was taking my daughter there, and heard she was being called "preciosa". For some reason, that name made me grin. And when I told my non-fan wife about it, she noticed my smile, reflected a moment, and said: "That's just like that monster, isn't it? What's his name?" "Gollum?" "Yeah, that's the one." So it is neither sounds neither Sindarin nor Hobbit-like, but I am enjoying Preciosa for the moment.
"The Appendices (and Prologue) gave Tolkien an outlet for explanations he couldn't fit into the text, and therefore made the text that much simpler and free of burdensome explanations. It's very hard for someone who creates a world from the ground up to refrain from overexplaining what he or she has created; the Appendices, and what is more the promise that someday The Silmarillion might be published, may have helped Tolkien exercise ruthless restraint." - Curious The weekly discussion of The Lord of the Rings is back. Join us in the Reading Room for the discussion of the appendices!

And may the good stuff keep rolling in! That must have been a scary wait, this fall. I was thinking about you. I know it's not all roses, but at least the blooms seem to be outweighing the thorns right now. Yes, trick or treating is tricky. We had no one last year, so I bought no candy at all; and had about 15 people show up at my door!

Even though she was 90, it's still never easy to say goodbye to our loved ones. On the other hand, I'll be she was excited for your trip... knowing how much it means to you!! WOW! If you go to Wellington, stay at the Lambton Quay (pronounced Key) Quest Wellington at the intersection of Lambton Quay and Hunter. It's right near a Park on the water and a couple of blocks to the Botanic Gardens trolley! There's a kitchenette, washer & dryer, and about 15 minute walk to the Embassy Theatre!! HEY... if you go to the Embassy, go up towards the top of the seats and find Xoanon's plaque/seat! He can't remember what number it is ;) Cheers, m'dear!

(belly laugh) Truly:) Found this this afternoon and thought you might like to set a date to explore a little next summer:)
''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted." — J.R.R. Tolkien May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings! In the air, among the clouds in the sky Here is where the birds of Manwe fly Looking at the land, and the water that flows The true beauty of earth shows With the stars of Varda lighting my way In all the realms this is where I stay In the realm of Manwë Súlimo
