Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond: the There and Back Again Challenge! Can't Post

Greetings, fellow TORn Travelers and a very Happy Birthday to Bilbo and Frodo!

In honor of our favorite Bagginses' birthday, and of a couple of long-awaited movie premieres coming up in the next couple years, the Walk to Rivendell is pleased to announce

The There and Back Again Challenge

TORnFolks, our mission is simple: get 13 rowdy Dwarves, one grumpy Wizard and a beleaguered Hobbit all 967 miles from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain in time for the premiere of The Hobbit: There and Back Again (the second Hobbit movie) on December 13, 2013.

How, you ask? Our Challenge is in three parts, a Group Challenge and two Individual Challenges. You can choose to participate in just the Group Challenge or add an Individual Challenge if you want to.

1. There and Back Again Group Challenge
Bilbo, the Dwarves and Gandalf traveled approximately 13,900* cumulative miles from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain. For us to get them there, we'll need to log a group average of about 120* miles per week to reach their destination by December 2013.

Last week, we logged a group total of 63 miles. How are we going to double that figure? By increasing our own level of activity, including more of the types of activity we're already doing, and inviting more TORn Folks to join us on the journey!

2. Unexpected Journey Individual Challenge
So you want to set yourself a goal as well as helping the group? How about following Bilbo's 967-mile journey from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain! By logging an average of 8.5 miles per week,** you'll get there by the second movie premiere in December 2013.

3. There and Back Again Individual Challenge
Want something more ambitious? Travel the 1934-mile Bag End-Lonely Mountain-Bag End round trip with Bilbo by logging an average of 17 miles per week!***

A Few Tips
  • Use the conversion charts that grammaboodawg is posting in this thread to convert other types of activity into walking-equivalent miles (thanks, gramma!).
  • Never underestimate the value of stretching, moderate strength-building, healthy snacks and sleep.
  • This is a journey, not a race; pace yourself, especially at first, to avoid injury and/or burnout. And make sure your health care provider is okay with your level of activity.
  • Most important, this is fun! We'll get much farther when we celebrate the milestones, encourage each other, and throw the occasional party!
Logging Progress
To make things easier on the Group Challenge mileage tracker (me!), please include the following format when you log your weekly progress:

Miles covered this week:
Cumulative miles:

Due to, well, life and such, I can't keep track of the miles anyone logs for part 2 or part 3 of the Challenge (except myself!); please keep your own records, and let us all know how you're doing! Part 2 and Part 3 participants - we'll log the miles you report for the Group Challenge, as well.

Group Challenge Progress
Miles covered last week: 63
Cumulative miles:
63

Bilbo has just arrived, huffing and puffing, at the Green Dragon, where the Dwarves are saddled up and ready to go. Gandalf will shortly catch up to them on the road, bringing Bilbo's pipe and pocket handkerchiefs.

As for me, I'm leisurely making my way toward Frogmorton this week. Bill the Treadmill was rather lonely, as I've been unexpectedly busy since last Thursday, but next week will be better!

The Scoop on the Walk

The TORn Walk to Rivendell thread meets right here on Main, on Thursdays.
Learn about the Walk to Rivendell/
Éowyn Challenge: http://www.eowynchallenge.net
Login Page to register miles: http://careydigitalstudio.com/...esdatabase/login.php

Please update your mileage via the login page, and be sure to keep a backup record of your miles, in case Warg attack, Wizard-induced blizzard, or other fell calamity causes the Shields page to crash. And see you in Rivendell, or wherever your journey takes you in Middle-Earth!

The Éowyn Challenge/Walk to Rivendell (and beyond) is a Middle-Earth-related fitness walk that began in March 2003, and has been going on with walkers around the world ever since. TORn's Walk is open to all people and healthy types of activity. Please visit the
Éowyn Challenge site, especially the main page and the Walk page, for more information. Useful links, including mileage charts compiled by the late Karen Wynn Fonstad, are on the Tools page.

*Bilbo traveled roughly 967 miles from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain. 967 mi x 15 people = 14,505 miles; however, the Dwarves traveled somewhat less than 967 miles, according to the Eowyn Challenge site - they didn't visit Gollum or make all the errand-runs around the Lonely Mountain, for example - and Gandalf's wanderings in The Hobbit are hard to track for a layperson like myself. So, after applying a mathematical technique I like to call "I think I'm somewhere in the ballpark, and I've even included most of the miles they took by Eagle, even though that feels like cheating," I arrived at about 13,900 cumulative miles, which, divided by 116 weeks, averages out to just under 120 miles per week.
**Technically, it's 8.34 plus a bit; I rounded up to make it easier to track and give folks a little bit of wiggle room!
***Technically, it's 16.67 plus a bit; see above!
****I won't ask you to grade me on this, Aunt Dora!

Fabulous!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Wonderful! I love it--it's a most excellent and admirable goal to set for ourselves! Thank you Arandiel!

Still need to crunch my own numbers here so I can actually contribute to the grand tally, but I am getting into a good routine here! Swimming/attempting to swim a lot, and walking way more than I was just a few weeks ago. I love the extra motivation!

"Yes, but what about SECOND breakfast?"

Walk to Rivendell TORn-Up Conversion Aids [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to TORn's Walk to Rivendell Conversion Aids

There are many sites and variations for converting activities to steps, steps to miles, and steps to calories. As long as you consistently use the same conversions, you'll have a satisfying trek from here to there and back again!

However, we thought it would be helpful if we offered a set of conversions that could be used by those of us on TORn's Walk to Rivendell via the Éowyn's Challenge website. So here are some charts and guides to help you on your journey and to take away the confusion of how to tick off the miles when walking isn't always the way to go.

How to convert your total steps into miles:
· Multiply the number of minutes you do an activity by the number of steps found on the activity chart below. For example, 30 minutes of raking leaves equals 3,750 steps (30 minutes x 125 steps).
· 2,000 steps equals one mile (on average).
· Divide 3,750 steps by 2,000 and you get your mileage of 1.875 miles rounded up to 1.88 miles.
· If your activity is not listed, find those most similar to it on the list and estimate the activity's step value.

Watch your step!
If you REALLY want to get technical about your walk, you'll have to figure on Strider... I mean... figure your stride or step length! Everyone has their own gait and step length; which, of course, would effect how many steps YOU would take to complete a mile compared to others. Someone who is 6' 2" will have a longer stride than someone who is 5' 2". Below is a chart to help determine your step length and how many of YOUR steps it would take to make up a mile.

Hey there, Longshanks! Got a pedometer?
You can easily participate in the Walk to Rivendell without a pedometer. However, if you plan to try one or already use one, you may want to determine your step length so they can calculate actual miles walked by multiplying your step length by steps walked. Don't worry! Your pedometer will do the calculating!

For a pedometer to measure distance accurately, you first program in your stride or average step length. Step length is the distance covered in an average step, either from heel to heel or toe to toe.

[pic courtesy of walkingwithattitude.com]

No Pedometer, thank you!
A pedometer is not necessary to track your mileage! In fact, you're not even restricted to walking to accumulate miles! Here's something to guide you through the confusion of engaging in other activities and converting them to miles.

How to measure your step length.
To begin, you need to know that there are 5280 feet to a mile. By measuring your step length (or stride), you'll see how many actual feet YOU cover in a mile. The longer your stride, the fewer steps you'll take to make up a mile. The shorter your stride, the more steps you'll need to cover a mile. By checking your step length on the chart below, you will see how many feet you cover when walking a mile. For example: if your step length is 2.10 (2' 10" or 2 ft 10 in), the number of steps you'll need to take to make up a mile are 1864 (a lot less than the average 2000 used).

How can you "see" your steps to measure your step length? Make some footprints by walking in some sand, or snow, or with wet shoes/feet on a dry surface, or by the tiles on the floor. Then measure the distance from your forward foot's heel to your back foot's heel or from toe to toe. Now you're a Strider!

I'm going to look pretty silly Richard Simmons-ing my way to the Lonely Mountain [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't believe the dwarves would take very favorably toward me Cool

19 miles for me this week. Still mostly through exercise videos, though I did get out for a short walk downtown this weekend... to reach the cupcake place. What? I had to help my big sister try out cupcakes for her wedding Angelic

So let me ask what others are doing about their cumulative miles? I have previously logged miles with the Eowyn Challenge. Are you guys including those in your personal count to the Lonely Mountain or should I just include the last couple of weeks. I don't really lose that many, just curious to see what others are doing.

Miles covered this week: 19
Cumulative miles: 87 or 69.5

Keep tracking your cumulative miles the way you have been.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't want to mess with the distance you've already covered! it just helps me to know whether I'm logging things right for the Challenge if I ever need to retrace things for more than a week; I can just figure the difference in people's cumulative miles from whenever I started getting off track to the current week, rather than having to add up all the intervening weeks. Why, yes, I do like to plan for the worst - cheapest insurance there is!

And the occasional cupcake makes all your progress just that little bit sweeter! (I did say "occasional"Cool)

WOW!! You've really done the thing right :D What an inspired way to get us all moving together! *wild applause*

I'm going to do the Group Challenge AND do the There and Back Again #3 Challenge.

I've been working on finishing the mileage chart for Bilbo and Gandalf's return to the Shire via Beorn's home for the winter. Ms Fonstad's chart stops at the Lonely Mountain. Gandalf and Bilbo come a different direction as they go up over the north of Mirkwood rather than through it and without being carried part of the way by the Eagles from the Mountain. So I've been having fun with maps and mileage to get it laid out. Your re-launch and the Challenges has lit a fire under me to get this DONE!

Thanks so much for doing this, Arandiel. I'm staggered with what you've done and ready to put a purpose to my walk again :)

*waves to everyone* SEE YOU ON THE ROAD!!!

...I walk about a mile three or four times a week when I can, and this looks like a nice incentive for me to get a bit more rigorous. Can I join in later, when I have time to really check this out? work is a bit busy right now...but I can hopefully add a few miles to the group challenge once I can figure out how to participate!

This is a nice activity that I had not really paid much attention to in the past -- hats off to you and everyone else who did/are doing their part to promote it. Hoping to join in soon, if that's ok!

...so that must be a sign that I should join this challenge (it's been a few years since I've logged miles for the Walk to Rivendell!). All I have to report for the group challenge this week are the 3 miles I walked today, but I'll do better next week!

miles this week: 3
cumulative miles: 3

That looks pretty meager; is there a mediocrity bench for walkers? I guess every mile helps, though.

Well, I only made it to the rec center on Monday, but I did do some walking on our road, so it's not all bad.

Total miles this week: 14.75.

I did 5 on the bike Monday and the rest is walking. I'm even counting approximately .25 miles I walked between the two soccer fields where my kids practiced yesterday.

Baby steps. That seems to be the way it's going to be for me.

Cumulative miles: 64.0 miles.

On Bilbo's journey, that puts me almost ready to camp near the road and I'm getting closer to the Old Forest.

so, I doubt it. CrazyLaugh
They probably would add a lot to the mileage tally, though, with all the running for soccer. But if they had to keep track of it, it would not be fun for them.

I refer to the ten year old as "Little Eruvande" just because he was the only kid for a while when I first joined TORn. When kid #2 came along, and I needed a name to refer to him here, I started calling him "The Little Goblin", because that is his personality. Little Eruvande is more of a hobbit, in physical appearance and habits. Collectively, I call them The Little Eruvandes, though.

My Hobbit is nearing 9, and he's a bundle of energy. He and my Elf are getting excited about the Hobbit movies (we finished the book last year and are trying to get through LotR before next Christmas), so I may find out if they're interested in contributing some mileage.

I will do my bestest.... [In reply to] Can't Post

.... to contribute to this challenge!!!!

Last weekend Mr. ShyElf took me away for the weekend to Niagara On The Lake, Ontario (beautiful place! And a very special place for the two of us!)

Anyway - he brought my wheelchair (yes, I have a wheelchair with this icky illness I've been suffering through for the past 3 months!) but I didn't use it. Not at all precious - not at all.

I walked. Slow and easy -- and if you were there last weekend, you would have seen me sitting on a park bench with my leg up. But I walked. I am very proud of myself. I would say during the 3 days that were were there, I walked at least 2 miles. (conservative estimate). My leg has been swollen all week - but it was all worth it!

So my contribution to the group challenge for this week:

Miles covered this week: 2
Cumulative miles: 2

Tongue

There will be weeks where I do nothing -- but other weeks will be better. And I hope they will improve even more as time goes on. I will also be using gramma's conversion charts. (Thanks gramma!!!)

I'm almost in Rivendell -- so I'm going to finish that on my own - and then I'll try challenge #2. We'll just see how far I get!

Cheers!

OK, I'm in...... [In reply to] Can't Post

Count me in on the group walk! I've been tracking my fitness activities in a spreadsheet for quite a while now, working my way through the various Eowyn Challenges. Right now, I'm riding to Minas Tirith with Merry and Theoden -- a little over a third of the way there. But Merry and Theoden can rest for a bit while I set off to the Lonely Mountain with Bilbo and the gang!

I use my own idiosyncratic mileage equivalent calculation where I normalize everything to a mile of walking/running using a "time-equivalent effort" estimation.

Last week's total was 8.7 miles, a pretty low week as things go.

As for what kinds of exercise I do -- tons of swimming, quite a bit of dancing, some walking, some biking, some weightlifting, and a few other miscellaneous things.

With caffeine, all things are possible.

The pity of Bilbo will screw up the fate of many.

Excellent! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

I think any ol' conversion that's used is totally acceptable! I think getting out there and using a consistent measurement is all we need :)

I love the mixture of activities you have there! It works so many different muscles and creates different stresses that are great at chewing up calories and building up stamina. I'm gonna take a lesson from YOU!! :D

Hey sister-sib... [In reply to] Can't Post

let me know when you're ready and I'll go to the site with you and get ya started :) It's easy-peasy! I'll also show you how I keep track of my miles in case it helps you.

I've essentially copied all of the mileage charts and I typed in (inserted) my mileage for the week on the pertinent line. It made it easier for me to literally plug myself into the walk :)

Just kinda keep track each week and we'll get them figured out when you're ready :)

I wish I liked swimming. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's so good for the whole body. But I just don't like being wet, especially my face, and particularly my eyes. Goggles don't seem to improve things, either. Unsure

I have a bunch of cousins who suffer from allergies/asthma/miscellaneous breathing issues and they all swim like fish. Nothing better for it!

*thinks of Dori the fish...just keep swimming, just keep swimming...*

Gramma, is your activities-to-calories-burned chart for men or women? [In reply to] Can't Post

Because there's a difference. Guys have less fat on them in general but they also burn it off faster than us gals. MadTongue

gramma - there seems to be problems with that activities to calories chart [In reply to] Can't Post

For instance:

Walking 3.0 MPH takes 354 calories
But Walking 3.5 MPH UPHILL takes only 295 calories. (so walking faster and uphill is easier than walking?)

It looks to me like a copy/paste problem occurred from the original chart as many of the numbers appear to be mixed up.

gramma and I will get this straightened out and post a new chart if necessary in tomorrow's thread. For now, I'd avoid using the Activities to Calories chart in gramma's post for conversions.

I've got a few questions... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all! I know we'll be checking in with each other soon with another week's tally, but I just wanted to ask a few things now.

I need to log my mileage at the official Eowyn Challenge site as well as here, right? I just set up my account, so that should be no problem; I just want to make sure I do everything right!

I ordered a pedometer, and I'm expecting it to be in the mail today. For the challenge, do we only count steps/miles when we are officially "exercising" or engaging in exercise-ish activity? Or do I just keep the pedometer on all day, so that my grand tally would include things like walking from the bus to my office, every time I walk down the hall, etc.? How do you guys generally do it?

Also, once I have my pedometer, is it legit to add back in stuff from the two previous weeks to my total miles? I hadn't been keeping an exact tally of what I've done, but once I know how many steps my usual walking routes are, I'll have a good idea of what I usually do in a given week. And I've been intentionally trying to "step it up," if you will, in the name of this challenge. I don't want to cheat, though! I just feel a bit lame for only having sort of contributed so far, even though I've physically been doing it.

Thanks again to Gramma, Arandiel, and everyone else who is doing this and posting helpful things!

ok, you're on... [In reply to] Can't Post

I try to walk every day but never measured it...it's a regular route from my home to a track around our local school and back -- so I will drive it to see how long it is, and then I will be in touch on how I can start logging things.

I guess I'm ready for another tech-adventure -- thanks for the offer to help me get started! Smile

I forgot how I did that footer! [In reply to] Can't Post

That's why I've not changed it -- Magpie gave me some lovely weaver images and a new footer ages ago, so I really should just sit down one day and try to get technical again.

For this, I do thank you for the encouragement though and between you my other "boosters" here I bet I can do this. THANKS for the nudge out the door and with luck I'll go through it soon...!

My thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

Totally up to you - though no one else is going to log them for you! I personally use my own spreadsheet.

Quote
For the challenge, do we only count steps/miles when we are officially "exercising" or engaging in exercise-ish activity?

I think different people do different things (we like to suggest things, but are not too hot about forcing people to do things!). I only count an activity if I'm specifically doing it to exercise (lawn mowing doesn't count for instance). I think others count many of their physical activities, and still others count every step they take. So for your own personal challenge, do whatever you want!

I'll let Arandiel decide what counts and doesn't count for our Group Challenge.

Also, once I have my pedometer, is it legit to add back in stuff from the two previous weeks to my total miles?

Absolutely, unless you were walking backwards, in which case you have to subtract the miles. Cool

Bah - the point of the walk is to get out and get some exercise, not to support our endless need for posting here!

I say do whatever is good for you! [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't count my steps, so I have no idea how many miles I've walked around my yard, or from the mailbox, or from the front gate. That sort of thing. But I am *totally* counting the bush-whacking through a dry creek I did this morning, looking for my naughty labs, who decided to go on an unexpected adventure. I know I sweated at least a mile's worth! And scratched my leg on a sticky vine!
(The dogs showed up on their own about an hour later. Crazy)

I think the only way you could cheat would be to say you walked/exercised more than you actually did. And only you would know anyway. And Gandalf. And Santa Claus would know for sure. Probably Tom Bombadil would know, too. And your mother. Mothers always know. BlushLaugh

*trying to stay awake* I'm here! [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry for the late reply, HH & everyone; this is the first time I've made it to TORn since ... oh goodness, have I logged on since Saturday? or was it Friday?

At any rate... Notta and Alassea got it basically right; I'm not picky about which activities you include in your count, as long as you feel it's a fair system for yourself. I could see some folks wanting to track everything, others wanting to count only the dedicated "exercise" times - and it's all good, as far as I'm concerned!

Feel free to add in your activity from the past couple weeks; I actually started my count with the miles that everyone reported two weeks ago (that's how I got the 63-mile total for last week's post - the one you replied to that I'm replying to now - oh, time travel; how confusing...)

I'd prefer not to add mileages that folks reported prior to September 8th (I think I have that right) to the Group Challenge, though; we need to have a starting point!

Wherever you go, there you are.

I'd Like to Re-Join [In reply to] Can't Post

I remember I sometimes participated in "Walk to Rivendell" in '03 or '04. In the years since then, we've moved out to the country & I've been generally unemployed. I have upped my walking to about 3 miles a day this month. I've been tracking my progress this year on MapMyWalk:

Miles covered this week (Apr 29-May 5): 19 miles
Cumulative miles (2012): 125 miles

Guess cumulative since 2004(ish): 900 miles
